  • Firefox 3.6.3 on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 - symbolic link to command line binary doesn't work?

    I have Firefox 10.6.3 installed on Mac OS X Snow Leopard from the DMG. I can run firefox from the terminal using /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin. However, if I create a symbolic link: sudo ln -s /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin /bin/firefox then it refuses to run, or at least display. When I issue "firefox" from the terminal, I can see the process in top, but never get the GUI to appear. :/ = ls -lr /bin/firefox lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 52 May 5 15:19 /bin/firefox - /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin Any ideas?   • Automator apps with different icons that persist upon saving

    Automator allows to save a workflow as an application bundle. It uses an Automator specific icon for doing this. I want to change this icon (using different icons for different workflows). I can do this by going into the application bundle and change the icon with Icon Composer. The disadvantage of this solution is that if I open the application bundle in Automator and save it, it uses the default icon again. Is there a way to change the icon for good?

  • How to browse Windows XP from Mac Finder when name disappears from finder

    Occasionally, like right at this moment, I cannot access my windows share from my mac. Normally, it works, but every now and then, the computer name won't be displayed under SHARED in Finder. Rebooting the windows computer usually fixes this, but it's inconvenient. The Windows computer can see the Mac on the network. Is there a method of asking finder to poll for windows shares again, or "forcing" finder to look for "desktop"? I'm looking for the equivalent of \desktop in the address bar of a Windows computer.     I am trying to secure a Mac after discovering that network links are being established to some unwanted internet sites. Using 'lsof -i' (list open 'files', internet) I have seen that launchd, ntpd, firefox, dropbox and other processes are either 'LISTENING' or have 'ESTABLISHED' links to a site or sites which I suspect have to do with spyware. I have been trying to find startup files and preference lists that initiate thise links but can't find them. I could easily reinstall the OS and restore data from a backup but I'd prefer to know how to fix this as I have six Macs to look after. Thanks...

  • Chaotic behavior of a dead pixel on my iMac 24"

    Since I bought my iMac last year, I have a white pixel on the left of my screen. I'm ok with that, one pixel is not much and I know about dead pixels policies. My problem is about understanding this "dead" pixel. But this pixel has a strange behavior. At first, it seems to be always white, but it is actually working ok under certain conditions: the mouse pointer a contextual menu Dock icons a QuickLooks video played in fullscreen other spaces than "1" The "QuickLooks fullscreen video" and "other spaces" are the one that disturb me the most. In these modes, my pixel is working fine, so it must be a software problem since my pixel is working correctly in those modes. Any ideas?

  • Formatted mac external hard drive loaded on pc

    I have an issue where it appears that an external hard drive which had been formatted on a mac system was loaded as a drive in Windows. Windows is obviously unable to read the data and now the drive won't mount in the mac. It appears that Windows overwrote something concerning the drive's information on what filesystems and types it has on it. Mac diskutility is unable to repair the drive and the partition is showing up in the utility as a FAT32. Using an applexsoft utility, I am able to verify the data is still on this drive, but I'd rather not spend $100 to save these files (its not my hard drive anyways). Is there a way I can use some UNIX commands to find out the partition information on the drive, back the raw data up on it, then restore the data back onto the drive after re-formatting it again?

    I used Carbonite to back up 75GB on my iMac. I also created a folder on my iMac to copy files to, from an external hard drive and then use Carbonite to back up from there. And THEN thinking I had everything safely backed up and, in order to make room on my hard drive I DELETED some of those files, and instead of increasing disk space..my disk space has shrunk to 2GB... I know, I know..you can't use Carbonite like that, but now I have two questions. 1) What is the explanation for the decrease in disk space even though I have deleted about 20GB of those backed up files from my hard drive? It must have something to do with the way Carbonite references backed up files, And 2) Is there a way to extricate myself from this situation?

  • Ofice for Mac 2011 does not start, how do I repair the database?

    After a TimeMachine restore; Office 2011 is having kittens over permissions it would seem. Having attempted a 'repair' out of Disk Utility, am still seeing: there is a problem with the Office database upon startup, after which Word/Excel work without issues. Outlook on the other hand won't even start. Given the obvious message here "You do not have write access to the Outlook application folder" – where is the DB located to check?

  • Spaces suddenly stops responding to mouse button activation

    I'm running Mac OS Leopard and using a Targus Bluetooth Laser Mouse and just recently on two different computers the mouse buttons stop being able to control Spaces. They work fine for activating Exposé but Spaces will not response to any mouse buttons. Keyboard and hotspot activations work fine. For over a year it has been working fine. Just made a clean install of OS X and still have the problem. Restarting fixes it, but it invariable returns if I use the computer for a while. Seems to happen after activating Spaces.

  • Sublime Text 2 'text bubbling'?

    In vim and Notepad++ I have an awesome feature either mapped or built in that I've seen called text bubbling. I know about the Sublime documentation for mapping my own, but wanted to make sure I wasn't duplicating functionality: Basically when I have either block of text selected, or just a cursor on a line, I push (ctrl + up/down) or some other mapping, and the text is moved up or down, in a block, and the rest of the text 'flows' around it. Is this a native feature in Sublime Text or should I script it in?

  • Correct location of git on Mac OS X

    On Mac OS x 10.6.6 I have git installed in /usr/bin/ I wanted to update the got version however the the git installer puts it in /usr/local/git/bin/ I realise I could rearrange to path to point to the local one first but what I do not get is where the /usr/bin version came from. Could it be part of an xcode install and lastly how would I delete correct it. I have looked and looked but find nothing and I didn't install it with ports etc. thanks

  • How do you change your Airport or Ethernet MAC address in Mac OS X 10.6?

    I have a MacBook Pro and would like to set a custom MAC address for either my Airport WiFi card, or Ethernet port. In older versions of Mac OS X, you could do it like this: $ sudo ifconfig en0 ether 00:11:22:33:44:55 // Ethernet $ sudo ifconfig en1 lladdr AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF // Airport For it to work on Airport, you'd have to power it on (e.g. $ sudo ifconfig en1 up), ensure it's not connected to any wireless network, and execute the command. I'm aware such a change won't propagate across reboots. Unfortunately, this doesn't work on Mac OS X 10.6.6 anymore. Apple appears to have removed the functionality (the command fails silently). Does anyone have any idea how to do it? Thanks for any help you can offer! :)

  • Is it possible to use Logmein to connect to a sleeping (Mac) computer on a wireless network?

    I'm using logmein to access my Mac. So I have the local logmein app running on my MacBook Pro, which is on my home wireless network. I access it either from the website (www.logmein.com) or the Logmein Ignition Apps on the iphone or ipad. My problem is that I have to set my MacBook Pro to not sleep at all when plugged in to make this a practical solution, because logmein cant seem to wake it up. I did change the settings in System Preferences to allow "Wake from Lan", but it seems like this won't work with a a Wifi connection. Am I missing anything? Assuming I'm not, is it bad for my computer to basically leave it running and not asleep most of the time?

    Hi I hope someone can help me... I accidentally renamed my own user name on my mac running OS X 10.4.11 and tried renaming back to what it was but now I have two accounts (the one I want to use which has all my preferences, applications, mail boxes, etc etc) is it possible to copy my settings from my original into this new user name? When I open my computer it defaults to this new account but everything is setting up from new and I just need to get access to all my work documents, mail settings etc. If there is anyone who could help out, I would be very grateful.   • How can I selectively increase latency? E.g. throttle games

    Basically, I want networked games to run poorly on a network, but I want everything else to run smoothly. I would also appreciate advice on blocking games in general. As far as I can tell, there's a few ways to completely prevent an internet game from running: Blocking entirely via DNS configuration (e.g. hosts file), or router DNS configuration Blocking entirely via a separate DNS server Blocking the application, by uninstalling or some kind of access control Blocking the application by automatically killing the process every once in a while Blocking the application by corrupting files periodically However, I would like a more subtle way to block a program. Something that either: Increases latency (would this be doable through some kind of QoS like what DD-WRT offers?) Increases latency by using a special routing configuration for specific target IPs Throttle other systems resources, such as memory, IO, or CPU Screw around with keyboard configurations when a game is launched I would like this to work on MacOSX and Windows, but Linux would be great too. FYI I don't have a kid, but I was brainstorming with some friends and parents.

  • Help importing video from old Sony digital tape HandyCam

    Some friends gave me their old HandyCam and a bunch of tapes asking me to put them on a DVD. The model is Sony DCR-TVR103 and it records onto Hi8 digital tapes. It has a firewire port also. I am trying to use import function in iMovie on OS X 10.6. Every import though the video is super fast, like playing in fast forward. Ever seen anything like this? How can I import this video?     I have a directory structure composed by: iTunes/Music/${author}/${album}/${song.mp3} I implemented a script to strip my mp3 bitrate to 128 kbps using lame (which works on a single file at time). My script looks like this 'normalize_mp3.sh': #!/bin/bash SAVEIFS=$IFS IFS=$(echo -en "\n\b") for f in *.mp3 do lame --cbr $f __out.mp3 mv __out.mp3 $f done IFS=$SAVEIFS This works fine, if I go folder by folder and execute this command. But I'd like to have a "global" command, like in 4DOS so I can run: $ cd iTunes/Music $ global normalize_mp3.sh and the global command would traverse all subdirs and execute the normalize_mp3.sh to strip all my mp3 in all subfolders. Anyone knows if there is a unix equivalent to the 4dos global command? I tried to play with find -exec but I just managed to get an headache.

  • Thunderbird confused about EPS attachments

    Sometimes, when I receive (Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 on OS X 10.5) emails with an EPS attachement sent from Mail OS X 10.4, I cannot open the EPS file. Thunderbird shows me 1 file, that can't be opened with any software but text edit. But, if I forward the email to myself, the forwarded email then has 2 files of the same name. One of the 2 forwarded files can be opened as expected. What can be wrong here?
