• Managing Static Library project as a module like Framework on iOS project in Xcode4.

- by Eonil
(Solution Note, I'll answer immediately) Many people including me trying to make a kind of Static Library framework for iOS to archive some kind of modularity. Framework is best way to do this, but it doesn't provided by Apple, and workarounds don't work well. https://github.com/kstenerud/iOS-Universal-Framework/tree/master/Fake%20Framework/Templates Fake framework cannot be referenced from linking tab in Build Phases. Real framework needs modification of system setting. And still not work smoothly on every parts. Problem is static library need header files, and it's impossible to reference header files on project at another location on different project without some script. And script breaks IDE's file management abstraction. How can I use static library project like a convenient module manner? (just dragging project into another project to complete embedding)

• Why does iOS 5 fail to connect to a server running JDK 1.6, but not JDK 1.5

- by KC Baltz
We have a Java Socket Server listening on an SSLSocket (port 443) and an iOS application that connects with it. When running on iOS 5.1, the application stopped working when we upgraded the Java version of the server from JDK 1.5 to 1.6 (or 1.7). The app connects just fine to JDK 5 and 6 when running on iOS 6. The iOS app is reporting an error: -9809 = errSSLCrypto. On the Java side, we get javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Received fatal alert: close_notify. On the Java server side, we have enabled all the available cipher suites. On the client side we have tested enabling several different suites, although we have yet to complete a test involving each one individually enabled. Right now, it is failing when we use TLS_DH_anon_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA although it has failed with others and we are starting to think it's not the suite. Here is the debug output. It makes it all the way to ServerHelloDone and then fails shortly thereafter: Is secure renegotiation: false [Raw read]: length = 5 0000: 16 03 03 00 41 ....A [Raw read]: length = 65 0000: 01 00 00 3D 03 03 50 83 1E 0B 56 19 25 65 C8 F2 ...=..P...V.%e.. 0010: AF 02 AD 48 FE E2 92 CF B8 D7 A6 A3 EA C5 FF 5D ...H...........] 0020: 74 0F 1B C1 99 18 00 00 08 00 FF 00 34 00 1B 00 t...........4... 0030: 18 01 00 00 0C 00 0D 00 08 00 06 05 01 04 01 02 ................ 0040: 01 . • Whats the minimum iOS version which supports OpenGL ES2.0 ?

- by Shireesh Agrawal
Hi, I am not sure if the question even makes sense. I am writing an iPhone game which uses Opengl ES 2.0. I know that OpenGL ES 2.0 is supported on 3gs and higher. Is there a minimum requirement for iOS version too, like the device needs to have iOS 3.1.3 or higher? Or does it solely depend on the hardware? Thanks! -shireesh p.s. I tried to search on the net but havent found much, perhaps I am not using the right keywords

• How to configure LAMP server for iOS social/chat app?

- by andufo
I'm on the last developing phase of a social networking app for iOS that has a chat module. Right now I'm trying to figure out the best way to achieve these features: Send message instantly to another user. If other user is online, delivery should be instantly. If user reads the message, the remitent should be notified of that action. If a user visits my profile, I should be notified instantly. What would be, in your opinion, the best approach to achieve that experience? The server is CentOS 5.6. I've previously reviewed XMPP, sockets, but I'm still unsure on what the best approach is. Any opinions and resources will be much appreciated.

• DirectX11 CreateWICTextureFromMemory Using PNG

- by seethru
I've currently got textures loading using CreateWICTextureFromFile however I'd like a little more control over it, and I'd like to store images in their byte form in a resource loader. Below is just two sets of test code that return two separate results and I'm looking for any insight into a possible solution. ID3D11ShaderResourceView* srv; std::basic_ifstream<unsigned char> file("image.png", std::ios::binary); file.seekg(0,std::ios::end); int length = file.tellg(); file.seekg(0,std::ios::beg); unsigned char* buffer = new unsigned char[length]; file.read(&buffer[0],length); file.close(); HRESULT hr; hr = DirectX::CreateWICTextureFromMemory(_D3D->GetDevice(), _D3D->GetDeviceContext(), &buffer[0], sizeof(buffer), nullptr, &srv, NULL); As a return for the above code I get Component not found. std::ifstream file; ID3D11ShaderResourceView* srv; file.open("../Assets/Textures/osg.png", std::ios::binary); file.seekg(0,std::ios::end); int length = file.tellg(); file.seekg(0,std::ios::beg); std::vector<char> buffer(length); file.read(&buffer[0],length); file.close(); HRESULT hr; hr = DirectX::CreateWICTextureFromMemory(_D3D->GetDevice(), _D3D->GetDeviceContext(), (const uint8_t*)&buffer[0], sizeof(buffer), nullptr, &srv, NULL); The above code returns that the image format is unknown. I'm clearly doing something wrong here, any help is greatly appreciated. Tried finding anything even similar on stackoverflow, and google to no avail.

• What technology or skillset should I learn today in order to be able to charge $250+ / hr in 2-3 years? [closed]

- by Ryan Waggoner
I've been doing PHP freelance development for the last 4-5 years and I'm starting to max out my hourly rate. So in 2010 I decided to transition to a new language. I played with Python and Ruby, but ended up settling on iOS, for three reasons: I'm enjoying the challenge of working on a completely different type of development, instead of another flavor of web development The demand seems higher right now than for Ruby or Python I see iOS developers charging $150 - 250 / hr Whether these reasons are right or wrong, I've been learning iOS for the last year and I'm starting to get more work in that field. I feel confident that in six months (barring any major shifts in the ecosystem), I can be billing iOS work at $150 / hr or more. However, I'm feeling that I should have done this earlier, that I've missed the boat, and that iOS development is going to dry up or get much more commoditized. Whether this is true or not isn't really my question (though feel free to comment). What I want to know is: what should I start learning right now so that I can be ahead of the curve in a couple years when the demand is far outstripping supply? What technologies or skillsets are going to be so heavily in demand in 2-3 years that you'll be able to charge $250 / hr or more and stay busy? These don't have to be new technologies either...the answer could be iOS or COBOL or whatever.

• Are there any Microsoft Exchange Clients for iOS and Android that store their local data in an encrypted manner?

- by Zac B
I don't feel like this is a product recommendation question, more of a "does this tech even exist and is it feasible" question, but if I'm wrong, feel free to give this question the boot. Context: Our company has a bunch of traveling employees who access the company's Exchange server via thier iDevices or android phones, but because of the data protection laws in the state where our company is based (and the nature of the data our company works with), a recent security audit found that all mobile devices (laptops, phones, etc) operated by our company need to have all company correspondence and related data encrypted all the time. For laptops, that was easy: BitLocker or TrueCrypt, problem solved. For phones and tablets, however, I'm stumped. Sure, you can put lock screens/passwords on the phones, but the data is still accessible via external extraction, as law enforcement authorities already know. Question: Are there any clients for Microsoft Exchange that run on iOS or Android which store local data encrypted? The people using our mobile devices do a lot of their work while offline, so just giving them OWA access with SSL connection security isn't enough. Are there apps/technologies that present an additional login credential prompt to decrypt locally stored data in the app's storage area on the phone? My gut reaction when I started looking into this was "that doesn't sound like something Apple would allow into the App Store", but I've been wrong before...

• CGContextSetShadow() - shadow direction reversed between iOS 3.0 and 4.0?

- by Pascal
I've been using CGContextSetShadowWithColor() in my Quartz drawing code on the iPhone to generate the "stomped in" look for text and other things (in drawRect: and drawLayer:inContext:). Worked perfectly, but when running the exact same code against iOS 3.2 and now iOS 4.0 I noticed that the shadows are all in the opposite direction. E.g. in the following code I set a black shadow to be 1 pixel above the text, which gave it a "pressed in" look, and now this shadow is 1px below the text, giving it a standard shadow. ... CGContextSetShadowWithColor(context, CGSizeMake(0.f, 1.f), 0.5f, shadowColor); CGContextShowGlyphsAtPoint(context, origin.x, origin.y, glyphs, length); ... Now I don't know whether I am (or have been) doing something wrong or whether there has been a change to the handling of this setting. I haven't applied any transformation that would explain this to me, at least not knowingly. I've flipped the text matrix in one instance, but not in others and this behavior is consistent. Plus I wasn't able to find anything about this in the SDK Release Notes, so it looks like it's probably me. What might be the issue?

• Strange crashes when using MPMoviePlayerController in iPad and iPad simulator with iOS 4.2.

- by Dave L
I'm getting crashes when trying to play a movie using MPMoviePlayerController on the iPad and in the iPad simulator using iOS 4.2. I am building using xcode 3.2.5 and the 4.2 SDK. When running on an iPad using iOS 3.2 or in the iPad simulator 3.2, the same code works fine, but on an iPad running 4.2 or in the iPad simulator 4.2, it crashes. The crash is due to an exception for calling an unknown selector down somewhere deep in the cocoa libraries, something tries to call a selector called "setHitRectInsets:" on a UIButton object. Also, the crash happens after control has returned to the main event loop. Anybody have any idea what might be causing this? Here is the code (roughly, some extraneous stuff deleted that doesn't seem to have any effect) that is crashing: NSString *fullMovieFilename = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"movie" ofType:@"m4v"]; NSURL *movieURL = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:fullMovieFilename]; moviePlayer = [[MPMoviePlayerController alloc] initWithContentURL:movieURL]; moviePlayer.controlStyle = MPMovieControlStyleNone; // crash happens regardless of the setting here [moviePlayer.view setFrame:self.view.bounds]; [self.view addSubview:moviePlayer.view]; [moviePlayer setFullscreen:YES animated:YES]; // crash happens whether i use fullscreen or not [moviePlayer play]; The same code also works just find if I build using Xcode 3.2.3 and the 4.0 SDK. The crash stack trace looks like this: 2011-03-04 23:08:22.017 MyApp[31610:207] -[UIButton setHitRectInsets:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x990bc60 2011-03-04 23:08:22.020 MyApp[31610:207] *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '-[UIButton setHitRectInsets:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x990bc60' *** Call stack at first throw: ( 0 CoreFoundation 0x0151abe9 __exceptionPreprocess + 185 1 libobjc.A.dylib 0x0166f5c2 objc_exception_throw + 47 2 CoreFoundation 0x0151c6fb -[NSObject(NSObject) doesNotRecognizeSelector:] + 187 3 CoreFoundation 0x0148c366 ___forwarding___ + 966 4 CoreFoundation 0x0148bf22 _CF_forwarding_prep_0 + 50 5 MediaPlayer 0x011b5bdb -[MPTransportControls createButtonForPart:] + 380 6 MediaPlayer 0x011b65d5 -[MPTransportControls _updateAdditions:removals:forPart:] + 110 7 MediaPlayer 0x011b4d78 -[MPTransportControls _reloadViewWithAnimation:] + 299 8 MediaPlayer 0x011b621a -[MPTransportControls setVisibleParts:] + 49 9 MediaPlayer 0x011b6e4a -[MPTransportControls initWithFrame:] + 173 10 MediaPlayer 0x011f9188 -[MPInlineTransportControls initWithFrame:] + 78 11 MediaPlayer 0x011f193a -[MPInlineVideoOverlay layoutSubviews] + 158 12 QuartzCore 0x00d6e451 -[CALayer layoutSublayers] + 181 13 QuartzCore 0x00d6e17c CALayerLayoutIfNeeded + 220 14 QuartzCore 0x00d6e088 -[CALayer layoutIfNeeded] + 111 15 MediaPlayer 0x011f130c -[MPInlineVideoOverlay setAllowsWirelessPlayback:] + 46 16 MediaPlayer 0x011f5b0d -[MPInlineVideoViewController _overlayView] + 526 17 MediaPlayer 0x011f6359 -[MPInlineVideoViewController _layoutForItemTypeAvailable] + 1350 18 Foundation 0x000e56c1 _nsnote_callback + 145 19 CoreFoundation 0x014f2f99 __CFXNotificationPost_old + 745 20 CoreFoundation 0x0147233a _CFXNotificationPostNotification + 186 21 Foundation 0x000db266 -[NSNotificationCenter postNotificationName:object:userInfo:] + 134 22 Foundation 0x000e75a9 -[NSNotificationCenter postNotificationName:object:] + 56 23 MediaPlayer 0x01184dd6 -[MPAVItem _updateForNaturalSizeChange] + 278 24 MediaPlayer 0x011818e4 __-[MPAVItem blockForDirectAVControllerNotificationReferencingItem:]_block_invoke_1 + 82 25 MediaPlayer 0x011899ba -[MPAVController _postMPAVControllerSizeDidChangeNotificationWithItem:] + 138 26 Foundation 0x000e56c1 _nsnote_callback + 145 27 CoreFoundation 0x014f2f99 __CFXNotificationPost_old + 745 28 CoreFoundation 0x0147233a _CFXNotificationPostNotification + 186 29 Foundation 0x000db266 -[NSNotificationCenter postNotificationName:object:userInfo:] + 134 30 Celestial 0x052a35b2 -[NSObject(NSObject_AVShared) postNotificationWithDescription:] + 176 31 Celestial 0x052ab214 -[AVController fpItemNotification:sender:] + 735 32 Celestial 0x052b5305 -[AVPlaybackItem fpItemNotificationInfo:] + 640 33 Celestial 0x052a3d5c -[AVObjectRegistry safeInvokeWithDescription:] + 211 34 Foundation 0x000fa9a6 __NSThreadPerformPerform + 251 35 CoreFoundation 0x014fc01f __CFRUNLOOP_IS_CALLING_OUT_TO_A_SOURCE0_PERFORM_FUNCTION__ + 15 36 CoreFoundation 0x0145a28b __CFRunLoopDoSources0 + 571 37 CoreFoundation 0x01459786 __CFRunLoopRun + 470 38 CoreFoundation 0x01459240 CFRunLoopRunSpecific + 208 39 CoreFoundation 0x01459161 CFRunLoopRunInMode + 97 40 GraphicsServices 0x01e4f268 GSEventRunModal + 217 41 GraphicsServices 0x01e4f32d GSEventRun + 115 42 UIKit 0x0038a42e UIApplicationMain + 1160 43 MyApp 0x0000837a main + 102 44 MpApp 0x00002009 start + 53 ) terminate called after throwing an instance of 'NSException' Been fighting with this for several days, and have searched the internet quite a bit for anybody having similar problems, all with no luck. • Do I need to keep "recompiling" my iPhone app code everytime apple releases a new iOS version?

- by user1760606
New here guys but have got a genuine problem. I have an iPhone app that was developed using SDK4. With apple introducing the new iOS version 6, does my code need to be recompiled on the new SDK to make it compatible with version 6? Right now it crashes on iOS6. Also, do I need to do that everytime apple brings out a new version? I wonder every other app on earth already does that ?! Thanks, Raghav

But a few days ago I downloaded the last version of the iPhone SDK for iOS 4, the proyect Build ok, no erros, no warnings, but when I run the aplication the video didn't work, the image didn't load but sound works. I don't understand it. Here is the code that I used. • problem with iOS 4.2 when user press the list view item to go to UIwebview page and the navigation button disappears on the second visit

- by seahorse
My app is a Navigation based application. The main menu contains the list view items. if I clicks one of them, it goes to next view which in this case take me to UIwebview embedded web site. Everything is looking great. I can view the content of web page, the navigation control back button which takes to the main menu if I press it. However, I'm having issue when I try to go back to main menu if i visit that subview the second time. It loads the content of UIwebview web page, but the navigation button is gone and won't let me go back to main menu. This problem only appears on latest iOS 4.2 version. Otherwise it works great on 3.1 to 4.1. I would appreciate any hints or inputs. Note this seems not working for subview using UIWebview embedded web content. I don't have any issue with other subviews

• Need new method for linking to native mapping from mobile web app

- by Carter
My mobile web apps use a map button which automatically starts the mapping features of Android and iPhone by simply linking to http://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+York. iOs 6 comes out, the links stop working, because Apple wants us to use "maps.APPLE.com". Turns out ANYTHING you send to "maps.apple.com" gets forwarded to "maps.google.com". So now I have to specially detect iOs 6 and swap out links just so Apple can forward everything back to Google anyway. Is there a clean way to open the device/native mapping app from a mobile web app that works on Android, iOs 6, and iOs pre-6, since iOs 6 nerfed it? Recently updated documentation on Apple dev site... http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#featuredarticles/iPhoneURLScheme_Reference/Articles/MapLinks.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40007894-SW1 Both these links go to the same place http://maps.google.com/maps?q=New+York http://maps.apple.com/maps?q=New+York

• Call Webservices…Maybe!?

- by MOSSLover
So I have been doing preliminary work for my iOS talk for a while, but did not get into the meat of the project until recently. One day I envision my talk uploading pictures from a camera on an iPhone or iPad into SharePoint and telling people how I did it. As you know with my Silverlight talk and any new technology, building new talks with new technologies always ends up with some pain points that you must jump over just to grab data. So step 1 always starts out with how do we even access a webservice using the new technology. I started out watching every single SPC video available on oAuth and Rest Webservices in SharePoint 2013. I also sent an email to Eric Shupps about some REST and 2013 examples. The videos further confused me, because all the videos were on SharePoint hosted apps (provider and autohosted). I did not want to create a SharePoint hosted app, but instead a mobile app outside of the SharePoint context altogether. Nick Swan sent me his code and it was great for a starting point on how the JSON calls would look like on iOS, but I was still missing a piece. Nick does a great job on showing how to use the REST/JSON calls in a non-MS tech, however his presentation uses the SharePoint context and can grab the SPAppToken. At this point I had to ask the question how do you grab the SAML token outside of SharePoint 2013 in iOS using Objective-C? After reading all the MSDN documentation, some documentation on Restkit and Objective-C/oAuth calls, and some SharePoint 2013 blog post my head was swimming. I was dreaming about REST and iOS in SharePoint 2013. SAML tokens were taunting me. I was nowhere near understanding 2013. I started talking to my friend, Pedro Jimenez, who is also playing with Objective-C and went to SPC. He found me a couple good MSDN posts with REST/JSON calls that basically showed the accessToken was all I needed (at this point I was still thinking iOS needed to be a provider hosted app which is wrong). So then again I had to ask the SAML token question…How do you get a SAML token outside of SharePoint without the TokenHelper class? So then I started talking to people and thinking why do I need to completely avoid TokenHelper…The solution in concept is basically create a webservice in Azure wrapped into a Provider Hosted App in SharePoint. Wictor Wilen created a helper webservice in the following blog post: http://www.wictorwilen.se/Post/How-to-do-active-authentication-to-Office-365-and-SharePoint-Online.aspx. So now I have to basically stand up the webservice, the SharePoint app wrapper, and then use Restkit to call the first webservice to grab the token and then the second webservice to pass in the token and grab some SharePoint data. What this means is that you can no longer just pass credentials into SharePoint webservices and get data back. You have to pass in a SAML token with every single webservice call to SharePoint. The theory is that this token is associated with the permissions the app can handle (read, write, whatever). It seems like a ton of pain and a lot of work, but this is step 1 in my crusade to pull some piece of data into iOS from SharePoint and show people how to do it themselves. In the upcoming months hopefully I can get halfway to my end goal. • How to permanently "renice" a process on Mac OS X (or iOS, etc)?

- by mralexgray
I use a nice (free) process manager called ATMonitor for Mac OS X that has a lot of cool hidden features... one of which is being able to click on a running process.. and set the "renice" from +20 (less priority) to -20 (highest priority). The best part.... it sticks between restarts... SO you want XYZ to get full attention all the time.. you set it once and it's done... I want to do the same thing (renice a process) on an iPad running a particular daemon.. and I don't know how to set a renice permanently. I can do it once, and it works fine... But the setting is lost on a reboot. I read somewhere.. Now, as for permanently resetting the priority of a process, this can't be done directly. You can fake it, however, with a shell script that starts the app and then immediately renice's it. Give that script a ".command" extension and it will be double-clickable in the GUI. Not very elegant, but it gets the job done. But as it says.. not very elegant, and I dont think this is how ATMonitor does it.... I found this thread.... http://superuser.com and they gave a way to do it as a launch argument, but no apparent way to save it as a persistent value... for instance - if the program wasn't going to be started by launchd... How do I set a permanent renice level, per executable binary, independent of it's PID, when, how or why it was launched?

• How can I express this nginx config as apache2 rewrite rules?

- by codecowboy
if (!-e $request_filename){ rewrite /iOS/(.*jpg)$ /$1 last; rewrite /iOS/(.*jpeg)$ /$1 last; rewrite /iOS/(.*png)$ /$1 last; rewrite /iOS/(.*css)$ /$1 last; rewrite /iOS/(.*js)$ /$1 last; rewrite /Android/(.*jpg)$ /$1 last; rewrite /Android/(.*jpeg)$ /$1 last; rewrite /Android/(.*png)$ /$1 last; rewrite /Android/(.*css)$ /$1 last; rewrite /Android/(.*js)$ /$1 last; rewrite ^/(.*)$ /?route=$1 last; } There are some vanity URLs e.g. mysite.com/yourdetails which are handled internally by a router class (its a PHP app with index.php as the entry point) and they seem to work fine on nginx but not Apache :-/ I tried this but the vanity URLs are not working RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !=/favicon.ico RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?route=$1 [L] I'd like to rule out Apache config first before I get too deep into the code.

• Seeking on a Heap, and Two Useful DMVs

- by Paul White
So far in this mini-series on seeks and scans, we have seen that a simple ‘seek’ operation can be much more complex than it first appears. A seek can contain one or more seek predicates – each of which can either identify at most one row in a unique index (a singleton lookup) or a range of values (a range scan). When looking at a query plan, we will often need to look at the details of the seek operator in the Properties window to see how many operations it is performing, and what type of operation each one is. As you saw in the first post in this series, the number of hidden seeking operations can have an appreciable impact on performance. Measuring Seeks and Scans I mentioned in my last post that there is no way to tell from a graphical query plan whether you are seeing a singleton lookup or a range scan. You can work it out – if you happen to know that the index is defined as unique and the seek predicate is an equality comparison, but there’s no separate property that says ‘singleton lookup’ or ‘range scan’. This is a shame, and if I had my way, the query plan would show different icons for range scans and singleton lookups – perhaps also indicating whether the operation was one or more of those operations underneath the covers. In light of all that, you might be wondering if there is another way to measure how many seeks of either type are occurring in your system, or for a particular query. As is often the case, the answer is yes – we can use a couple of dynamic management views (DMVs): sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats and sys.dm_db_index_operational_stats. Index Usage Stats The index usage stats DMV contains counts of index operations from the perspective of the Query Executor (QE) – the SQL Server component that is responsible for executing the query plan. It has three columns that are of particular interest to us: user_seeks – the number of times an Index Seek operator appears in an executed plan user_scans – the number of times a Table Scan or Index Scan operator appears in an executed plan user_lookups – the number of times an RID or Key Lookup operator appears in an executed plan An operator is counted once per execution (generating an estimated plan does not affect the totals), so an Index Seek that executes 10,000 times in a single plan execution adds 1 to the count of user seeks. Even less intuitively, an operator is also counted once per execution even if it is not executed at all. I will show you a demonstration of each of these things later in this post. Index Operational Stats The index operational stats DMV contains counts of index and table operations from the perspective of the Storage Engine (SE). It contains a wealth of interesting information, but the two columns of interest to us right now are: range_scan_count – the number of range scans (including unrestricted full scans) on a heap or index structure singleton_lookup_count – the number of singleton lookups in a heap or index structure This DMV counts each SE operation, so 10,000 singleton lookups will add 10,000 to the singleton lookup count column, and a table scan that is executed 5 times will add 5 to the range scan count. The Test Rig To explore the behaviour of seeks and scans in detail, we will need to create a test environment. The scripts presented here are best run on SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition, but the majority of the tests will work just fine on SQL Server 2005. A couple of tests use partitioning, but these will be skipped if you are not running an Enterprise-equivalent SKU. Ok, first up we need a database: USE master; GO IF DB_ID('ScansAndSeeks') IS NOT NULL DROP DATABASE ScansAndSeeks; GO CREATE DATABASE ScansAndSeeks; GO USE ScansAndSeeks; GO ALTER DATABASE ScansAndSeeks SET ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION OFF ; ALTER DATABASE ScansAndSeeks SET AUTO_CLOSE OFF, AUTO_SHRINK OFF, AUTO_CREATE_STATISTICS OFF, AUTO_UPDATE_STATISTICS OFF, PARAMETERIZATION SIMPLE, READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT OFF, RESTRICTED_USER ; Notice that several database options are set in particular ways to ensure we get meaningful and reproducible results from the DMVs. In particular, the options to auto-create and update statistics are disabled. There are also three stored procedures, the first of which creates a test table (which may or may not be partitioned). The table is pretty much the same one we used yesterday: The table has 100 rows, and both the key_col and data columns contain the same values – the integers from 1 to 100 inclusive. The table is a heap, with a non-clustered primary key on key_col, and a non-clustered non-unique index on the data column. The only reason I have used a heap here, rather than a clustered table, is so I can demonstrate a seek on a heap later on. The table has an extra column (not shown because I am too lazy to update the diagram from yesterday) called padding – a CHAR(100) column that just contains 100 spaces in every row. It’s just there to discourage SQL Server from choosing table scan over an index + RID lookup in one of the tests. The first stored procedure is called ResetTest: CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.ResetTest @Partitioned BIT = 'false' AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON ; IF OBJECT_ID(N'dbo.Example', N'U') IS NOT NULL BEGIN DROP TABLE dbo.Example; END ; -- Test table is a heap -- Non-clustered primary key on 'key_col' CREATE TABLE dbo.Example ( key_col INTEGER NOT NULL, data INTEGER NOT NULL, padding CHAR(100) NOT NULL DEFAULT SPACE(100), CONSTRAINT [PK dbo.Example key_col] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED (key_col) ) ; IF @Partitioned = 'true' BEGIN -- Enterprise, Trial, or Developer -- required for partitioning tests IF SERVERPROPERTY('EngineEdition') = 3 BEGIN EXECUTE (' DROP TABLE dbo.Example ; IF EXISTS ( SELECT 1 FROM sys.partition_schemes WHERE name = N''PS'' ) DROP PARTITION SCHEME PS ; IF EXISTS ( SELECT 1 FROM sys.partition_functions WHERE name = N''PF'' ) DROP PARTITION FUNCTION PF ; CREATE PARTITION FUNCTION PF (INTEGER) AS RANGE RIGHT FOR VALUES (20, 40, 60, 80, 100) ; CREATE PARTITION SCHEME PS AS PARTITION PF ALL TO ([PRIMARY]) ; CREATE TABLE dbo.Example ( key_col INTEGER NOT NULL, data INTEGER NOT NULL, padding CHAR(100) NOT NULL DEFAULT SPACE(100), CONSTRAINT [PK dbo.Example key_col] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED (key_col) ) ON PS (key_col); '); END ELSE BEGIN RAISERROR('Invalid SKU for partition test', 16, 1); RETURN; END; END ; -- Non-unique non-clustered index on the 'data' column CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX dbo.Example data] ON dbo.Example (data) ; -- Add 100 rows INSERT dbo.Example WITH (TABLOCKX) ( key_col, data ) SELECT key_col = V.number, data = V.number FROM master.dbo.spt_values AS V WHERE V.[type] = N'P' AND V.number BETWEEN 1 AND 100 ; END; GO The second stored procedure, ShowStats, displays information from the Index Usage Stats and Index Operational Stats DMVs: CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.ShowStats @Partitioned BIT = 'false' AS BEGIN -- Index Usage Stats DMV (QE) SELECT index_name = ISNULL(I.name, I.type_desc), scans = IUS.user_scans, seeks = IUS.user_seeks, lookups = IUS.user_lookups FROM sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats AS IUS JOIN sys.indexes AS I ON I.object_id = IUS.object_id AND I.index_id = IUS.index_id WHERE IUS.database_id = DB_ID(N'ScansAndSeeks') AND IUS.object_id = OBJECT_ID(N'dbo.Example', N'U') ORDER BY I.index_id ; -- Index Operational Stats DMV (SE) IF @Partitioned = 'true' SELECT index_name = ISNULL(I.name, I.type_desc), partitions = COUNT(IOS.partition_number), range_scans = SUM(IOS.range_scan_count), single_lookups = SUM(IOS.singleton_lookup_count) FROM sys.dm_db_index_operational_stats ( DB_ID(N'ScansAndSeeks'), OBJECT_ID(N'dbo.Example', N'U'), NULL, NULL ) AS IOS JOIN sys.indexes AS I ON I.object_id = IOS.object_id AND I.index_id = IOS.index_id GROUP BY I.index_id, -- Key I.name, I.type_desc ORDER BY I.index_id; ELSE SELECT index_name = ISNULL(I.name, I.type_desc), range_scans = SUM(IOS.range_scan_count), single_lookups = SUM(IOS.singleton_lookup_count) FROM sys.dm_db_index_operational_stats ( DB_ID(N'ScansAndSeeks'), OBJECT_ID(N'dbo.Example', N'U'), NULL, NULL ) AS IOS JOIN sys.indexes AS I ON I.object_id = IOS.object_id AND I.index_id = IOS.index_id GROUP BY I.index_id, -- Key I.name, I.type_desc ORDER BY I.index_id; END; The final stored procedure, RunTest, executes a query written against the example table: CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.RunTest @SQL VARCHAR(8000), @Partitioned BIT = 'false' AS BEGIN -- No execution plan yet SET STATISTICS XML OFF ; -- Reset the test environment EXECUTE dbo.ResetTest @Partitioned ; -- Previous call will throw an error if a partitioned -- test was requested, but SKU does not support it IF @@ERROR = 0 BEGIN -- IO statistics and plan on SET STATISTICS XML, IO ON ; -- Test statement EXECUTE (@SQL) ; -- Plan and IO statistics off SET STATISTICS XML, IO OFF ; EXECUTE dbo.ShowStats @Partitioned; END; END; The Tests The first test is a simple scan of the heap table: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT * FROM Example'; The top result set comes from the Index Usage Stats DMV, so it is the Query Executor’s (QE) view. The lower result is from Index Operational Stats, which shows statistics derived from the actions taken by the Storage Engine (SE). We see that QE performed 1 scan operation on the heap, and SE performed a single range scan. Let’s try a single-value equality seek on a unique index next: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT key_col FROM Example WHERE key_col = 32'; This time we see a single seek on the non-clustered primary key from QE, and one singleton lookup on the same index by the SE. Now for a single-value seek on the non-unique non-clustered index: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT data FROM Example WHERE data = 32'; QE shows a single seek on the non-clustered non-unique index, but SE shows a single range scan on that index – not the singleton lookup we saw in the previous test. That makes sense because we know that only a single-value seek into a unique index is a singleton seek. A single-value seek into a non-unique index might retrieve any number of rows, if you think about it. The next query is equivalent to the IN list example seen in the first post in this series, but it is written using OR (just for variety, you understand): EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT data FROM Example WHERE data = 32 OR data = 33'; The plan looks the same, and there’s no difference in the stats recorded by QE, but the SE shows two range scans. Again, these are range scans because we are looking for two values in the data column, which is covered by a non-unique index. I’ve added a snippet from the Properties window to show that the query plan does show two seek predicates, not just one. Now let’s rewrite the query using BETWEEN: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT data FROM Example WHERE data BETWEEN 32 AND 33'; Notice the seek operator only has one predicate now – it’s just a single range scan from 32 to 33 in the index – as the SE output shows. For the next test, we will look up four values in the key_col column: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT key_col FROM Example WHERE key_col IN (2,4,6,8)'; Just a single seek on the PK from the Query Executor, but four singleton lookups reported by the Storage Engine – and four seek predicates in the Properties window. On to a more complex example: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT * FROM Example WITH (INDEX([PK dbo.Example key_col])) WHERE key_col BETWEEN 1 AND 8'; This time we are forcing use of the non-clustered primary key to return eight rows. The index is not covering for this query, so the query plan includes an RID lookup into the heap to fetch the data and padding columns. The QE reports a seek on the PK and a lookup on the heap. The SE reports a single range scan on the PK (to find key_col values between 1 and 8), and eight singleton lookups on the heap. Remember that a bookmark lookup (RID or Key) is a seek to a single value in a ‘unique index’ – it finds a row in the heap or cluster from a unique RID or clustering key – so that’s why lookups are always singleton lookups, not range scans. Our next example shows what happens when a query plan operator is not executed at all: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT key_col FROM Example WHERE key_col = 8 AND @@TRANCOUNT < 0'; The Filter has a start-up predicate which is always false (if your @@TRANCOUNT is less than zero, call CSS immediately). The index seek is never executed, but QE still records a single seek against the PK because the operator appears once in an executed plan. The SE output shows no activity at all. This next example is 2008 and above only, I’m afraid: EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT * FROM Example WHERE key_col BETWEEN 1 AND 30', @Partitioned = 'true'; This is the first example to use a partitioned table. QE reports a single seek on the heap (yes – a seek on a heap), and the SE reports two range scans on the heap. SQL Server knows (from the partitioning definition) that it only needs to look at partitions 1 and 2 to find all the rows where key_col is between 1 and 30 – the engine seeks to find the two partitions, and performs a range scan seek on each partition. The final example for today is another seek on a heap – try to work out the output of the query before running it! EXECUTE dbo.RunTest @SQL = 'SELECT TOP (2) WITH TIES * FROM Example WHERE key_col BETWEEN 1 AND 50 ORDER BY $PARTITION.PF(key_col) DESC', @Partitioned = 'true'; Notice the lack of an explicit Sort operator in the query plan to enforce the ORDER BY clause, and the backward range scan. © 2011 Paul White email: [email protected] twitter: @SQL_Kiwi
