• My Macbook Pro wifi intermittently won't turn on sometimes after sleep, does anyone know how to solve this?

  Hello, My current-generation MacBook Pro 15" (10.6.5) intermittently has problems turning the wifi (airport) on. The usual symptom happens when I: Sleep the machine Open from sleep Wifi is off (the airport signal is blank) I click on airport icon-Turn Airport On, but nothing happens. I googled around a bit and found one recommended solution where I delete the "automatic" location and create a new one and enable the wifi, or I delete the "AirPort" from the location and add it back, but neither of these resolve the problem. I also called AppleCare and they had me delete /Library/SystemConfiguration and restart, but that hasn't solved the problem. I have to reboot, which is very painful. Does anyone have any idea of how to solve this?

• Only One GPU Detected in the Nvidia Quadro NVS 450

  I just built myself an new workstation and now only 2 of 3 monitors are working. I built the nvidia driver by downloading it and installing with ./Nvidia... Before when I ran nvidia-settings I saw two GPUs listed but now I only see one. • Files slow to save sometimes after Ubuntu upgrade

  I haven't quite been able to track down why this happens sometimes in Ubuntu 10.04 and not other times. I'll go into gedit or OpenOffice.org and try to save files, and, during some sessions, it will take up to 10 seconds to save the file, sometimes causing the program to become unresponsive. But during these same sessions, the files sometimes save instantly. This didn't start happening until after the 10.04 (Lucid) upgrade. I suspect that something is reading all the changes I make, or that there's some other big file action going on, or something like that. I disabled Tracker a while back, before the upgrade, and don't see it under the settings - could it be back under a different name under Lucid? You probably don't already know the answer, but how can I go about finding the cause of this problem?

• My ubuntu server is losing connectivity, require assistance troubleshooting

  I have two server monitoring tools that check the uptime of my Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS server. Over the last month both of these tools have reported the following outages: Jan - 15mins: self recovery Jan - 5 mins: self recovery Feb - 15mins: I managed to be online when this happened and logged into my control panel to find that my server was shutdown. I manually restarted it only because I was online. I wonder if it would have restarted? I have contacted my VPS provider (webbynode) who could not see any any problems with their VPS infrastructure for the February outage. I have also checked the following log files to see if there are any anomalies that could be the cause of the outages; I am unable to see anything related to the server shutdown (Feb) in these logs: /var/log/auth.log /var/log/apache2/error.log /var/log/syslog /var/log/kern.log /var/log/boot /var/log/messages Could anyone suggest any other things I should look out for, such as additional system logs? I just added bootlogging through /etc/default/bootlogd

• I shrunk the Windows partition, now it says grub rescue on boot

  I have got a machine with dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10, and I wanted to add another OS to that (Jolicloud), so I started the partition manager in Windows and shrunk the Windows partition by about 10 GB (so now I have:Windows;currently empty 10GB;Ubuntu). I shutted down the computer because I was finished. Now when I started my machine again it says error:no such partition. grub rescue> and I can type commands. ls gives (hd0) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos4) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) (fd0) if that helps

• Ubuntu 9.10 Dowload Speed Very Slow

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 desktop and I'm new to the Linux world, so bear with me. I'm on a corporate network of 3 T1s shared across 50-60 users. I typically get about 300 KB/sec for downloads, but for whatever reason, the Linux box will start out in that range, then drop to less than 1KB/Sec sometimes. Doesn't seen to matter where I'm downloading from. Right now I'm trying to get Eclipse for PHP and it's running at 3-6KB/sec. Getting the updates for the system will also drop to very slow rates. Our IT person has set up the machine to get the same 10.0.0.x address when it starts, and moved this IP to bypass our Proxy/Firewall going out, so that shouldn't be the issue. Can anyone recommend something I can try to better diagnose the problem. Again, I'm new to the Linux world and the hardware/OS setup side in general (coming form more of a coding background). Thanks for any advice.

This can be solved by specifying a maximum heap size and running "java -Xmx256m" But is there anyway to permanently fix this error (i.e. set the default heap size to 256MB so that I do not need to specify the max heap size every time I run the command)

  I am having problems pinging from a 5505(remote) to IP 10.160.70.10 in the network behind the 5540(HQ side). 5505 inside IP: 10.56.0.1 Out: 71.43.109.226 5540 Inside: 10.1.0.8 out: 64.129.214.27 I Can ping from 5540 to 5505 inside 10.56.0.1. I also ran ASDM packet tracer in both directions, it is ok from 5540 to 5505, but drops the packet from 5505 to 5540. It gets through the ACL and dies at the NAT. Unfortunately, I'm unable to access both, my pen-drive on the USB port and my 8GB SD card inserted in the SD Card port. Can anyone suggest me what I should do for my Ubuntu to detect both of them? • Galaxy Tab 3 producing continuous LightSensor error in LogCat

  I am using a Galaxy Tab 3 as a test device for writing an android app. As such I'm interested in the output of the LogCat which is being filled with these error level messages. The device itself appears to work correctly, apps which rely on the light sensor correctly respond to it and the number in the error itself goes down if the light sensor is obscured. If I wasn't using it to develop apps I wouldn't even be aware of the issue but I believe it is an issue with the device itself not my app: simply plugging the tab 3 into the computer and using Eclipse - ADT to look at the LogCat without any app running leads to these errors being shown. I know I could filter the LogCat to ignore these errors but inconvenience aside; they concern me. A sample of the log cat is below (it generates errors continuously). This is on verbose so it includes some debug level (D/) messages as well as the error level messages (E/). • All browsers hang on windows 7 in tab says 'Waiting for...' need restart

  I'm having a frustrating problem with browsers on OS windows 7 home premium. IE 10: My web browsing works ok for a while and then pages freeze and tab at top says "Waiting for ...' and never loads. Strangely I can still get to Google search results but if I click anything it freezes. Chrome freezes too and says 'The page has become unresponsive ...kill page' Safari stops also. I have tried clearing cookies, cache, turning off Bitdefender firewall and nothing apart from a restart fixes it. consequently I am forced to restart my computer several times a day to stop this browser hang. I have no idea what could be causing this ..any help greatly appreciated.

  Hi, I have ubuntu 9.10 desktop VMware VM with the default grub2 installed. There is some weird problem with this VM. When you clone this vm and have a customization script run, the cloned machine crashes at first boot (VMware does not officially suport customizaing Ubuntu newer than 8.04). After the creash the Grub boot menu is displayed but there is not time out. I checked /boot/grub/grub.cfg and it does indeed show a timeout of 10 seconds. Nothing happens till I select an option with the keyboard. The second time the Ubuntu loads, it does not crash. My question is, how do I make the grub menu timeout in that case? Thanks.

  Hi, I have just gotten my Lenovo X200s laptop, and I am install Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic on it. The installation went through without a hitch, but I can't get my wifi to work. lspci | grep Network Produces the following results: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03) 03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.   I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 (Verified the ISO hash as well). The VERY first thing I did was open the software centre and try to install banshee. • Oracle DB on solaris utilizing swap memory when free RAM available

  Hi, We have a weird instance where we noticed our oracle database server swap utilization was 100% and surprised to see that the system had free memory available during that period. To my knowledge, swap memory utilization starts once system runs out of free RAM (please correct me if i'm wrong). Not sure what could have caused this unusual activity. • Move/copy files/folder in linux/solaris using only bash built-ins

  There was a situation when somebody moved the whole rootdir into a subdir on a remote system, thus all the system tools like cp, mv, etc didn't work anymore. We had an active session though but couldn't find a way to copy/move the files back using only bash built-ins. Do somebody know of a way to achieve this? I even thought about copy the cp or mv binary in the currentdir with while read -r; do echo $LINE; done and then redirect this to a file, but it didn't work. Guess because of all the special non printable chars in a binary file that can't be copied/displayed using echo. thanks.

• What is the 'best practice' for installing perl modules on Solaris/OpenSolaris?

  I'm currently in the process of writing setup instructions for some software I've written that is implemented as a set of Perl modules. Having done this for various flavours of Linux, I'm now doing the same for Solaris/OpenSolaris (v10 only). Part of the setup process is to make sure that dependent Perl modules are installed. This has been pretty easy on Linux as the Perl modules I require tend to be within the distro's packaging system (eg yum install perl-Cache-Cache). This is not the case on Solaris so I'm working on setup instructions that use the CPAN module to fetch dependent modules (eg perl -MCPAN -e 'install Cache::Cache'). This works ok but there are known problems with modules that require things to be built with a C compiler. The problem is that the C Makefile generated assumes you're using Sun's compiler and uses command-line options not understood by gcc, which you may be using instead. Consulting teh Internetz has thrown up a number of solutions to this: Install and use Sun's compiler Use the perlgcc wrapper script Edit the makefiles by hand (yuk) All of these work. My question to those more familiar with Solaris than me is: Is one of these the 'best' or 'most commonly used' method?
