  • How to make it easier when using the vim command in unix?

    - by Mitral
Recently i try to learn something about the unix. when i try to edit something using the vi command, it is very difficult for me since i have to switch the edit mode and control mode time by time. It is very inconvenient. Is it that i miss something or it is originally like that? Is there anyway to improve that? Thank you :)

  • UNIX-style RegExp Replace running extremely slowly under windows. Help?

    - by John Sullivan
I'm trying to run a unix regEXP on every log file in a 1.12 GB directory, then replace the matched pattern with ''. Test run on a 4 meg file is took about 10 minutes, but worked. Obviously something is murdering performance by several orders of magnitude. Find: ^(?!.*155[0-2][0-9]{4}\s.*).*$ -- NOTE: match any line NOT starting 152[0-2]NNNN where in is a number 0-9. Replace with: ''. Is there some justifiable reason for my regExp to take this long to replace matching text, or is the program I am using (this is windows / a program called "grepWin") most likely poorly optimized? Thanks.

  • Vi/Vim: How to pipe visually selected text to a UNIX command and append output to current file

    - by drsnyder
Using Vim, I'm trying to pipe visually selected text to a UNIX command and have the output appended to the end of the current file. For example, say we have a SQL command such as: SELECT * FROM mytable; I want to do something like the following: V # select text :'<,'!mysql -uuser -ppass mydb But instead of having the output overwrite the currently selected text, I would like to have the output appended to the end of the file. You probably see where this is going. I'm working on using VIM as a simple SQL editor. That way, I don't have to leave VIM to edit, tweak, test SQL code. Thanks!

  • What's the fastest way to get directory and subdirs size on unix using Perl?

    - by ivicas
I am using Perl stat() function to get the size of directory and its subdirectories. I have a list of about 20 parent directories which have few thousand recursive subdirs and every subdir has few hundred records. Main computing part of script looks like this: sub getDirSize { my $dirSize = 0; my @dirContent = <*>; my $sizeOfFilesInDir = 0; foreach my $dirContent (@dirContent) { if (-f $dirContent) { my $size = (stat($dirContent))[7]; $dirSize += $size; } elsif (-d $dirContent) { $dirSize += getDirSize($dirContent); } } return $dirSize; } The script is executing for more than one hour and I want to make it faster. I was trying with the shell du command, but the output of du (transfered to bytes) is not accurate. And it is also quite time consuming. I am working on HP-UNIX 11i v1.

  • ./kernelupdates 100% cpu usage

    - by Vaibhav Panmand
I have a CENTOS6 server running with some wordpress & tomcat websites. In the last two days it has been crashing continuously. After investigation we found that kernelupdates binary consuming 100% cpu on server. Process is mentioned below. ./kernelupdates -B -o stratum+tcp://hk2.wemineltc.com:80 -u spdrman.9 -p passxxx But this process seems invalid kernel update. Might be server is compromised and this process is installed by hacker, So I've killed this process & removed apache user's cron entries. But somehow this process started again after couple of hours & cron entries also restored, I am searching for the thing which is modifying cron jobs. Does this process belong to a mining process? How can we stop cronjob modification and clean the source of this process? • UNIX-style RegExp Replace running extremely slowly under windows. Help? EDIT: Negative lookahead ass

Find: ^(?!.*155[0-2][0-9]{4}\s.*).*$ -- NOTE: match any line NOT starting 155[0-2]NNNN where in is a number 0-9. Replace with: ''. Is there some justifiable reason for my regExp to take this long to replace matching text, or is the program I am using (this is windows / a program called "grepWin") most likely poorly optimized? Thanks. UPDATE: I am noticing that searching for ^(155[0-2]).$ takes ~7 seconds in a 5.6 MB file with 77 matches. Adding the Negative Lookahead Assertion, ?=, so that the regExp becomes ^(?!155[0-2]).$ is causing it to take at least 5-10 minutes; granted, there will be thousands and thousands of matches. Should the negative lookahead assertion be extremely detrimental to performance, and/or a large quantity of matches?

  • Failure retrieving contents of directory

    - by Bondye
Currently I have a couple of websites. My problem is that if I login on 1 specific domain with any of my programs (using notepadd++, FileZilla and Netbeans) the program stops at the content listing. I had it correctly running, (I'm working on a project on this domain for more than a year now) and suddenly I broke it somehow. This only happens on 1 specific domain, all other domains (from other hosts) are working. My colleague (next to me with same ip address) is able to login on this domain. Notepadd++ says: Failure retrieving contents of directory Filezilla says: Failed to retrieve directory listing Netbean popups: Upload files on save failed. (Because I have the setting upload on save enabled.) What I tried: First I thought it's my firewall, I disabled firewall but no result. Also notice that all other domain are working. Maby a blacklist with my ip address? No my colleague has the same ip address. Could anyone help me on this? • Gearman too many processes issue

    - by Roman Newaza
I use Net_Gearman from PECL, Gearmand 1.1.11 and Gearman Manager. Every time I add background job, I can see new worker listed with no Function, nor Id in Ggearman-Monitor: If I add many messages in the bash loop, after some time it becomes very slow. for i in $(seq 0 9999); do php Client.php && echo $i; done Yesterday, the situation was even worse - I had many error messages in Gearmand log regarding Too many open files and once I added --file-descriptors=49152 as an option and swithched to 1.1.11 from 1.0.6, these errors gone. • 550 “Overwrite permission denied” when editing a file via FTP

    - by nodebunny
DreamHost recently moved my accounts to a new shared box, and now I can't edit files via UltraEdit's built in FTP client, which messes up my work flow! • Getting ZFS per dataset IO statistics (or NFS per export IO statistics)

    - by jkj
Where do I find statistics about how IO is divided between zfs datasets? (zpool iostat only tells me how much IO a pool is experiencing.) All the relevant datasets are used through NFS, so I'd be happy with per export NFS IO statistics also. We're currently running OpenIndiana [edit] It seems that operation and byte counter are available in kstat kstat -p unix:*:vopstats_??????? ... unix:0:vopstats_2d90002:nputpage 50 unix:0:vopstats_2d90002:nread 12390785 ... unix:0:vopstats_2d90002:read_bytes 22272845340 unix:0:vopstats_2d90002:readdir_bytes 477996168 ... ...but the strange hexadecimal ID numbers have to be resolved from /etc/mnttab (better ideas?) rpool/export/home/jkj /export/home/jkj zfs rw,...,dev=2d90002 1308471917 Now writing a munin plugin to use the data...

  • When connecting to a unix box, how does it know you have SSH setup on your desktop?

    - by Blankman
When you use something like putty to connect to a linux box, and you setup your SSH keys etc. When connecting, how does it tell the server that you want to connect using your SSH keys? Is SSH running as a service on a particular port or does it simply pass your private-key and then the login service sees that and tries to connect using it? Just looking for a fairly high level understanding (with maybe some detail if you want to...)

  • Unix users and permissions and how they interact with web files.

    - by Columbo
Hello, When you issue the command ls in Linux you get this sort of thing: drwxr--r-- 1 fred editors 4096 drafts -rw-r--r-- 1 fred editors 30405 file1.php -r-xr-xr-x 1 fred fred 8460 file2.php I know that the rwxrwxrwx are the read, write and execute permissions for the current user. And I think I know that 'fred' is the user who owns the file. So I assume fred can write to file1 but no one else can. But what is the extra bit 'editors' and what is the difference between file1 and file2 with respect to one having an ownership of 'fred editors' and the other 'fred fred'? Also if a web user connects to one of the files, what is their user name and where is this decided? If the server decided that user connecting from the web was going to be fred, does this mean any web user could write to file1? Any information welcomed, I am resaerching this but just getting confused. Thanks

  • Is there any viable alternative to using a linux/unix/BSD firewall/router/vpn?

    - by ObligatoryMoniker
I am trying to purchase something to replace our Vyatta router that is running in a virtual machine on Hyper V (having the whole network go down when the host has to reboot is not convenient and I am getting the sense that this configuration may not be stable). Most posts on this topic suggest using Linux/OpenBSD/FreeBSD/etc with some recommendations to use appliances from vendors for specific purposes like firewall and VPN. We are a windows shop and it has been a stretch for us to make use of Vyatta but since it was free and straightforward to use we decided to use it. Now we need something that is easier for our team to (re)deploy and manage. I would rather purchase something windows based or an appliance that can do all of the following things: DHCP server (reservations, specified gateway, dns, etc) Static Routes that route traffic across three interfaces Easily Reproducible (Powershell script, Puppet, Chef, etc) Intuitive interface (Decent web interface would be fine but I don't want them to have to go to CLI) Does any one have any recommendations on what I should be looking at that might meet our needs?

  • X Session from Mac

    - by tekknolagi
How can I log into an X server from Mac OS X? I know that ssh -X username@host will log me in and I will have the capability to run X applications. On Cygwin/X you can log in and have a whole X session from your computer... and it will look something like this: How can I replicate this? • How can I detect if a NIC is UP in UNIX?

    - by Rich
I am currently writing a bash script (for Nagios), and I would like to be able to detect if specific network cards are up or not. My best guess is to do something like this: ifconfig eth0 | grep UP | wc -l or: ethtool eth0 | grep "Link detected: yes" | wc -l Are either/both of those reliable ways of testing if the network card is up, or is there a better option? Perhaps there is a flag on ethtool which will do precisely what I want? Thanks in advance for any suggestions/pointers! Rich

  • How can I pin point a USB file transfer bottleneck in Unix?

    - by HankHendrix
I'm experiencing very slow data transfer speeds over USB 2.0 on my nix box and was wondering how I can pin-point the cause of the problem. I've looked into iotop and top but the cpu and mem figures look normal (compared to guides I have checked). The box which is affected is Ubuntu 12.04 32bit Server running on an Asus EEE 701 2G model and I am transferring from the OS over USB 2.0 to an external HDD (which transfers at 30MB/s+ on Windows 7 on other machine). I get rsync write speeds of 1MB/s from OS to USB HDD which seems ridiculously slow. These speeds are consistent with other USB HDDs and sticks.

  • Samba: map domain group to local one

    - by user285467
I have a problem with mapping pure domain group to one existing on UNIX system. When I map NT domain account by default samba picks local SID - one that can be acquired via the command; net getlocalsid Instead of SID that comes from domain; net getdomainsid This is the behavior that I do not understand. I can explicitly set the SID to the domain one. E.g.: net groupmap add sid=[DOMAIN SID]-[RID] ntgroup=[DOMAIN group] unixgroup=[UNIX group] type=l However the command getent group | grep 'DOMAIN group indicates this group to be domain one - GID created in accordance to RID backend in use, not the GID of 'UNIX group' as expected. Worth to mention I use the winbind. Strange thing is that I already have such mapping in place for other 'DOMAIN group2' that getent group reports with GID of local UNIX group with all members of the 'DOMAIN group2'. Now the question is how to populate such behavior for other of my groups???

  • Apache Logs - Not Showing Requested URL or User IP

    - by iarfhlaith
    Hey all, I'm having a problem with a server that keeps falling over. Looking through the Apache error logs it appears to come from a rogue PHP script. I'm trying to track this down using Apache's error_log and access_log but the server log format isn't giving me the detail I need. I suspect the log format isn't sufficient, but I've reviewed the Apache documentation and I've included the switches that I think I need to see. Here's my LogFormat configuration in the httpd.conf file: `LogFormat "%h %l %u %t \"%r\" %s %b %U %q %T \"%{Referer}i\" \"%{User-Agent}i\"" extended CustomLog logs/access_log extended` Using the %U %q %T switches I expected to see the requested URL, query string, and the time it took to serve the request, but I'm not seeing any of this information when I tail the log. Here's an example: 127.0.0.1 - - [01/Jun/2010:14:12:04 +0100] "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0" 200 - * 0 "-" "Apache/2.2.15 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.15 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_bwlimited/1.4 (internal dummy connection)" 127.0.0.1 - - [01/Jun/2010:14:12:05 +0100] "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0" 200 - * 0 "-" "Apache/2.2.15 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.15 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_bwlimited/1.4 (internal dummy connection)" 127.0.0.1 - - [01/Jun/2010:14:12:06 +0100] "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0" 200 - * 0 "-" "Apache/2.2.15 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.15 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_bwlimited/1.4 (internal dummy connection)" 127.0.0.1 - - [01/Jun/2010:14:12:07 +0100] "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0" 200 - * 0 "-" "Apache/2.2.15 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.15 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_bwlimited/1.4 (internal dummy connection)" 127.0.0.1 - - [01/Jun/2010:14:12:08 +0100] "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0" 200 - * 0 "-" "Apache/2.2.15 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.15 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_bwlimited/1.4 (internal dummy connection)" 127.0.0.1 - - [01/Jun/2010:14:12:09 +0100] "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0" 200 - * 0 "-" "Apache/2.2.15 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.15 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_bwlimited/1.4 (internal dummy connection)" Have a made a mistake in configuring the LogFormat or is it something else? Also, each request appears to come from the localhost. How come it's not giving me the remote user's IP address? Thanks, Iarfhlaith

  • Python 3: regex to split on successions of newline characters

    - by Beau Martínez
I'm trying to split a string on newline characters (catering for Windows, OS X, and Unix text file newline characters). If there are any succession of these, I want to split on that too and not include any in the result. So, for when splitting the following: "Foo\r\n\r\nDouble Windows\r\rDouble OS X\n\nDouble Unix\r\nWindows\rOS X\nUnix" The result would be: ['Foo', 'Double Windows', 'Double OS X', 'Double Unix', 'Windows', 'OS X', 'Unix'] What regex should I use?
