  • Free-as-in-beer binary file format inspector

    I am looking for a utility that gives me the ability to specify a binary file format and then interpret a file of bytes according to that format. (Something along the lines of the 010 Editor, but infinitely more cost-effective). Something that runs on Mac OS X would be preferred, but I'm interested to see what all is out there in general (while more of a hassle I'd be willing to run a tool on Windows if it were superior.) What's your preference?

  • Why is Windows Update trying to install an update I don't need?

    I have a Windows 7 system that currently has a single update pending: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems If I try to install the update, Windows Update will: Create a restore point Fail with the error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an error. The event log for the event reads: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. If you search the web for that error, there are many other people with the exact same issue. Sadly, I am unable to apply the proposed solutions to my case, because I just installed this system. There is nothing on it, except Windows 7. I installed the system and ran through the updates. I also did the exact same process with this machine several times over the past few days due to a long-term test we just started. I didn't have any problems with any Windows Update on the previous installation runs and I know I didn't do anything different this time because I followed the installation procedures instructions which are to be used during the test. How did this happen and how do I solve it? Further Investigation So, as I always like to do, I ran the update again while running Process Monitor and dug up further details. WindowsUpdate.log First of all, there is a Windows Update log file located at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log which I didn't know about.     Hi, We installed a clustered SQL 2005 installation on windows 2008 and reattached our san drives from another machine and restored to do a migration to new hardware. There have been a few minor issues, but this one has me stuck. Trying to populate Full-Text indexes is not working. However, the bridged network that VMware sets up connects my Airport interface in Mac to the wired interface eth0 in Ubuntu. How do I set it up so that the Airport interface is connected to the wireless interface eth1 in Ubuntu?

  • When gaming computer freezes with a blank screen and a buzzing sound

    I have a problem with random freezes when playing games. Sometimes it's fine for hours, other times it dosn't last even one. I tried googling around and I found recomendations to update my graphics drivers and to test for overheating. The graphics drivers haven't helped worked and Furmark created a consistant heat higher than I get during a crash. I even tried running a game using the Linux dual boot and WINE, that crashed too. Here are the tempreture logs leading up to the latest crash. The GPU dosn't hit 80, and I've hit 90 with no crash on firmark.   • Win 7 (SP1) Creationg of System Image failure... seems absurd. (0x80780119)

    This question seems to keep coming up in Microsoft Answers. Unfortunately, it never seems to be solved... on Microsoft Answers. Hopefully someone here will have a better idea. I'm trying to create a system image. It's not working. I have just re-installed windows as of a few hours ago. I have an admittedly older Western Digital 148 GB USB portable HDD which is not just completely empty, but I even did a long format with the NTFS file system just to be sure. The reinstallation of windows and a couple of programs take up 40 GB (seen below) When I try to create a System Image onto the USB HDD, I am told that there is not enough room. Obviously, this is wrong. The screen captures show exactly the steps that are happening to lead me to 0x80780119. I haven't done anything but put on Windows 7 (32bit; SP1) and install some programs. I haven't even done anything with them. There's almost zero in the way of data, and I checked that yes, the HDD works to accept data, send data and work with data. I've used the drive successfully for a long, long time. What's going wrong?

    I have repository on my Windows machine, using VisualSVN + TortoiseSVN I want to use this repositories on my Mac with Versions.app I create a new Repository bookmark, choose a repository directory and after clicking "Create", get following error: Unable to open an ra_local session to URL Unable to open repository 'file://localhost/Path/to/my/repositories/MyRepo' Expected FS format '2'; found format '4' I can surf through the repository, using svn ls file://localhost/Path/to/my/repositories/MyRepo Also, when i create local repository, using Versions.app, the bookmark is created well and i can work with it Help!

I was reviewing our backup procedures lately and noticed in the ntbackup logs that the differential backups of Exchange were failing with the error: (SERVERNAME)\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group is not a valid drive, or you do not have access. A quick search of google found this MS KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555613 However, both of the suggested fixes don't to apply to our problem. First solution is to make sure the backup media is formatted and has adequate space. Well, our backup target is a 1 TB external hard drive with about 600 gigs of free space. (A full backup of our Exchange DB is currently around 5 GB) The second suggested fix is to "perform a full backup before trying to do incremental". And again, that can't it because we are doing full backups twice a week. There are no errors in the application log, just entries for ntbackup starting and ending. I've also tested doing an differential & incremental backup onto the server's internal drive, which unsurprising still did not work. I could get around this problem by always doing a full backup of Exchange but I kind of like the idea of being space efficient with doing differential backups. Anyone got any ideas?

    I've searched for an answer to this one and I haven't found one yet. How do i remove a single item from Windows' System tray? I'm targeting Windows XP. Edit: This is not about preventing items from starting up. I want the program to keep running, I just need another script/program to remove the first one's entry from system tray. Second Edit: One approach that I can think of is to try to hide the intended app by modifying registry keys. On several test machines I've found some registry entries that match the System tray information at HKEY_USERS\something-that-looks-like S-1-5-21-682003330-1563985344-725345543-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify with BalloonTip, IconStream and PastIconsStream containing systray information. The important one is IconStream. On other machines, these are found at hkey_classes_root/local/setting/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/TrayNotify I'm quite sure there's no danger in changing those specific registries, but I don't know how to write code for that. Can anyone help me with the code and with confirming if this has the desired effect of hiding the systray icon for an active program?

    I usually post over on StackOverflow, but thought this was probably better suited to ServerFault. Please migrate if I'm wrong! I am developing a WCF service and a BizTalk application on my workstation at the moment. As part of the WCF service, I had to install hotfix 971493 from Microsoft which updates some core WCF assemblies. Following installation of that hotfix, I am now experiencing severe issues in my existing BizTalk application. When I attempt to configure the properties of an existing WCF-Custom receive location, I get this error: Error loading properties (System.IO.FileLoadException) The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) If I click OK (the same error repeats four times) I eventually see the WCF-Custom properties dialog. However if I click on the various tabs, I continue to receive errors: The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) (Microsoft.BizTalk.Adapter.Wcf.Admin) The WCF-Custom receive location was working yesterday, and I installed the hotfix this morning. I'm guessing these two are related, and that BizTalk somehow has a reference to the old WCF assemblies. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

  • Ctrl + 1 and Ctrl + 2 key combinations don't work

    I noticed back in August (when I got StarCraft 2) that the key combinations Ctrl + 1 and Ctrl + 2 didn't work. I thought this was weird because Ctrl + 3 and all the other combinations worked fine (including Shift + 1, etc), so I didn't think much of it; I just shrugged it off as a SC2 bug. Now, 4 months later, I decided to play a completely unrelated game--Dawn of War 2--and noticed the same thing: those two specific key combinations don't work. To make sure I wasn't going insane, I tried it in Chrome and a couple other applications, and alas, it didn't work. I remember playing strategy games over the summer before StarCraft 2 and it worked fine. Any idea as to what went wrong? My keyboard, a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 1000 (I know, insert Microsoft joke here), is a little over a year old, so I'm going to assume it's not dying until proven otherwise. Things I've tried ActiveHotkeys says the key combination is not a global hotkey. Tried another keyboard--still doesn't work. The key combinations do work in a virtual machine (tried with both Windows and Ubuntu as guests).

    I am facing a weird problem. My computer hangs while loading the desktop, and only the background shows up; no icons or bars load. If I power the system on and off about 4-6 times, I may be able to use it normally. The desktop loads normally after rebooting or in safe mode; this only occurs when I start the system normally. I've tried several things to fix it, such as removing all start-up items, but it still doesn't solve the problem. What should I do?   • How do I fix a custom Event Viewer Log that merges automatically with the Application log?

    I am trying to create a custom event log for a Windows Service on Windows Server 2003. I would like to name the custom log "(ML) Startup Commands". However, when I add a registry key with that name to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\, it adds a log but shows the exact same events that are in the Application log when looking in the event viewer. If I add a registry key with the name "(ML) Startup Commands 2" to the event log, it shows a blank event log as expected. In fact, any other name will work correctly except for the one I want. I have searched through the registry for other keys with the string "(ML)" and removed all other references to this key name, however I continue to get merged results in the viewer when I create a key with this name. My question is, how can I fix the server so I can create a custom event log with this name that shows only the events from my application, not the events from the default Application event log that is installed with Windows? Update: I rebooted the server and woudn't you know it, the log started acting normally. I got a strange error message in the Application log: The EventSystem sub system is suppressing duplicate event log entries for a duration of 86400 seconds. The suppression timeout can be controlled by a REG_DWORD value named SuppressDuplicateDuration under the following registry key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\EventLog. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. I can only hope this error doesn't mean the problem will come back after 86400 seconds. I guess I will have to wait and see.
