    Introduction After the success of the “Demystifying DBA Best Practices” Pre-Conference that my good friend Robert Davis, a.k.a. SQLSoldier [Blog|Twitter] and I delivered at multiple events, including the PASS Summit 2012, I have decided to blog about some of the topics discussed at the Pre-Con. My thanks go to Robert for agreeing to share this content with the larger SQL Server community. This will be a rather lengthy blog series - and as in the Pre-Con, I expect a lot of interaction and feedback. Make sure you throw in your two cents in the comments section of every blog post.   We usually have between 40 and 80 people attending our regular meeting at the Montreal .NET Community.  This week, we had a special Windows Phone 7 blitz with 2 meetings. The topics were very good: Tou.tv and Flickr apps development retro feedback from the teams who wrote them. In the first meeting, RunAtServer discussed how they built the Tou.tv WP7 app for Radio-Canada.  In the second meeting, nVentive discussed how they built the WP7 and Slate clients for Flickr.   Today on twitter the following question came up on the #sqlhelp hash tag, from DaveH0ward : Is there a DMV that can tell me the last time an index was rebuilt? SQL 2008 My initial response: I don't believe so, you'd have to be monitoring for that ... perhaps a DDL trigger capturing ALTER_INDEX?   This fall I'm 99% going to London to attend the awesome Devdays 2011; I have many reasons to go there and some of them are: Professional stuff Great people Awesome topics Unicorns Passion London :) Obviously all the cool technologies that will be discussed are light years far from my daily work but useful for my side projects and maybe for some future employment. Now, to get to the point; a coworker said to me that he won't come with me because Devday London is expensive, and something expensive should reward you with a certificate, a certificate that could have some value to the eyes on an employer. Is he right? Do you think that attenting to this kind of event have some value on a resume? Should it be highlighted? Does it have any value for a future employer?

If I counted correctly, there are 173(!) videos from this year’s conference, and a total of 467 videos from this and previous years. I’ve watched a lot of sessions from the major conferences that include .NET material, and NDC consistently has the best presentations in my opinion. There are lots of my favorite speakers: Crockford, Uncle Bob, Damian Edwards, Venkat Subramanian, Hanselman (I’m interested in seeing if he still thinks “poop” is funny, or got that out of his system at TechEd ;), Cory House (hey, KC!), the .NET Rocks Guys and more, so check it out!

(error “Kernel requires features not present on the CPU: PAE”) Virtualbox install 12.04 guest: “pae not present” After loading ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso into my Oracle VM, the hard drive would not boot because the version for my cpu require the pae kernel. How do I insert the pae kernel or download a copy of ubuntu with the pae kernel?

  We were looking for some topics related to audio analysis and found acoustic fingerprinting. As it is, it seems like the most famous application for it is for identification of music. Enter our manager, who requested us to research and possible find an algorithm or existing code that we can use for this very simple approach (like it's easy, source codes don't show up like mushrooms): Always-on app for listening Compare the audio patterns to a single audio file (assume sound is a simple beep) If beep is detected, send notification to server With a flow this simple, do you think acoustic fingerprinting is a broad approach to use? Should we stop and take another approach? Where to best start? We haven't started anything yet (on the development side) on this regard, so I want to get other opinion if this is pursuit is worth it or moot.

• Fitting an established site into a CI framework

  I manage a rather large, feature full nightmare of a site which has no end of feature creep settings/options/etc. Up to now its been coded in a procedural/functional way and would like to move to an OO,MVC setup. I'm quite new to it all but have done alot of research and feel that CodeIgniter is a code choice of framework to use to help quicken the transfer. Before looking at a framework, I started constructing a list of objects to create classes out of: photos users forum topics forums blogs blog posts comments The trouble I have now, is I do understand where these generic/universal objects fall into the CI MVC setup. What is the best way to organise this kind of stuff? These classes can generally be used on multiple models/views/controllers.

• Is it better to concentrate on one or two research projects throughout undergrad?

  Currently in the 4th semester of engineering in an Indian university. The thing is - is it better to do as many short-lived projects/research work on diverse topics of computer science or stick to one/two projects consistently throughout my undergraduate years? Case in point: currently working on an image-processing project that promises to carry on for a year or so (as per the prof). Does this seem like being over-specialized at too early a level? Although taking on too many things will spread me out thin and in all probability not end up getting any meaningful work done. Especially as I hope to apply for grad school in the US. Would really appreciate any views and suggestions on this.

  busybox initramfs prompt while attempting to install from live cd on 2nd hdd I've created a partition in ext3 on my second hdd to intall linux however when i come to boot the CD i get directed to a busybox prompt with no other choice than help. Other topics i've read on the subject where bound to the idea ubuntu has been already installed, and that the partition needs to be just indicated or else... But since i've no ubuntu installed, neither have i any partition that ubuntu should consider like that... How can i go through that?
