  I am having a hard time figuring out why the following constructor will not close connnections. When I view the active connections. Here is the code that I have. • showSettings callback in Flex?

  I am pretty new to flex, so forgive me if this is an obvious question. Is there a way to open the Security.showSettings (flash.system.Security) with a callback? or at least to detect if it is currently open or not? My flex application is used for streaming audio, and is normally controlled by javascript, so I keep it hidden for normal use (via absolute positioning it off the page). When I need microphone access I need to make the flash settings dialog visible, which works fine, I move it into view and open the dialog. When the user closes it, I need to move it back off the screen so they don't see an empty flex app sitting there after they change their settings. thanks :)

  Hi folks, I create a selectList in my controller, to display in the view. I'm trying to create it on the fly, sorta thing .. like this... myViewData.PageOptionsDropDown = new SelectList(new [] {"10", "15", "25", "50", "100", "1000"}, "15"); It compiles, but the output is bad... <select id="PageOptionsDropDown" name="PageOptionsDropDown"> <option>10</option> <option>15</option> <option>25</option> <option>50</option> <option>100</option> <option>1000</option> </select> Notice how no item is selected?   I'm trying to change the fillColor of a CAShapeLayer when the layer it's contained in is touched. I'm able to change the background color of the tapped layer like this: -(void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { CALayer *layer = [(CALayer *)self.view.layer.presentationLayer hitTest:point]; layer = layer.modelLayer; layer.backgroundColor = [UIColor blueColor].CGColor; } This turns the background of "layer" blue as expected. My problem is how do I change the color of the CAShapelayer inside "layer"? Thanks!

• Process touches behind the UINavigationBar

  In my application, I'm displaying a fullscreen image in a 320 x 480 frame. After I display the image, I fade the navigation bar out to allow the user to see the whole picture. When the user taps in the area where the navigation bar was, I would like to bring the navigation bar back. This is very similar to what happens in the iPhone Photos app. Unfortunately, after I've hidden the UINavigationBar, I can't process touches on the screen where the navigation bar once was. I believe this is because the origin of the parent view is right below the navigation bar: How can I process touches in this area to bring the nav bar back?

  More often than I like when designers edit some of our sites' pages, they include javascript or an external image our SSL pages that are not encrypted. For example if we have a page like this: https://www.example.com/cart/EnterCreditCard And the designer includes some non-encrypted image like this: <img src='http://www.cardprocessor.com/logo.gif' /> Of course, this creates errors in all browsers: IE: Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely? Firefox: Connection Partially Encrypted Chrome: (I forget this message) What I'm looking for is a tool or plugin that lets me easily see what objects are not encrypted. A firefox extension or something along those lines would be great.

• How reusable should ViewModel classes be?

  I'm working on a WPF application, and I'm structuring it using the MVVM pattern. Initially I had an idea that the ViewModels should be reusable, but now I'm not too sure anymore. Should I be able to reuse my ViewModels if I need similar functionality for a WinForms application? Silverlight doesn't support all things WPF does - should I be able to reuse for Silverlight applications? What if I want to make a Linux GUI for my application. Then I need the ViewModel to build in Mono - is this something I should strive for? And so on.. So; should one write ViewModel classes with one specific View in mind, or think of reusability?

  Okay, I have been looking into MVVM pattern, and each time I have previously tried looking into it, I gave up for a number of reasons: Unnecessary Extra Long Winded Coding No apparent advantages for coders (no designers in my office. Currently only myself soon to be another coder) Not a lot of resources/documentation of good practices! (Or at least hard to find) Cannot think of a single scenario where this is advantageous. I'm about to give up on it yet again, and thought I'd ask to see if someone answer the reasons above. I honestly can't see an advantage of using this for a single/partner coding. Even in complex projects with 10's of windows. To me the DataSet is a good enough view and binding like in the answer by Brent following question

  I need to load a custom cell in a UITableView. I created a custom subclass of UITableViewCell named "CustomTableViewCell". I have added a UITabelViewCell to the tableview (using drag and drop) as shown in figure. Then in file inspector I set the class of that UITabelViewCell to be "CustomTableViewCell". • Should I replace string patterns in asp.net mvc using a custom viewengine?

  Have an ASP.NET MVC site that is localized. The localization functionality adds the two digit language ID to the URL, e.g. /es/Page. If no language Id is found in the URL, the site switches to the user's browser culture. All's good. However, the site's hyperlinks, a mixture of hard-coded href tags, actionlinks, etc., don't include the base language ID, so when clicking through the site the set culture is lost, and the site reverts to the user's browser culture. My (lazy) thought is to replace all href values, that don't point to an external site, with the localized URL (e.g. include the /es/). Otherwise, all site links will need to be updated to include the culture code. Is this just plain dumb? Or, reasonable, and should be done using a custom view engine, or some other approach?

• Cleaning up temp folder after long-running subprocess exits

  I have a Python script (running inside another application) which generates a bunch of temporary images. I then use subprocess to launch an application to view these. When the image-viewing process exists, I want to remove the temporary images. I can't do this from Python, as the Python process may have exited before the subprocess completes. I.e I cannot do the following: p = subprocess.Popen(["imgviewer", "/example/image1.jpg", "/example/image1.jpg"]) p.communicate() os.unlink("/example/image1.jpg") os.unlink("/example/image2.jpg") ..as this blocks the main thread, nor could I check for the pid exiting in a thread etc The only solution I can think of means I have to use shell=True, which I would rather avoid: cmd = ['imgviewer'] cmd.append("/example/image2.jpg") for x in cleanup: cmd.extend(["&&", "rm", x]) cmdstr = " ".join(cmd) subprocess.Popen(cmdstr, shell = True) This works, but is hardly elegant, and will fail with filenames containing spaces etc.. Basically, I have a background subprocess, and want to remove the temp files when it exits, even if the Python process no longer exists.

• Detecting bad jpeg images

  The question on validating jpegs on network transfer is very helpful. Could we take this question one step further? What if the image data is incomplete or corrupt from the server? The complete transport works, the MIME type is image/jpeg, the UIImage is constructed and non-nil but the renderer discovers inconsistencies in the data and the log shows "Bad Huffman code" or "premature end of data segment" How would I capture this error before tossing the UIImage into the view context and thereby getting a not-pretty image on the screen? Could I render it to a non-screen context and capture the error?

  Hi, I have an edit form that uses an ajax form to submit to the controller. Depending on the data submitted I redirect the user to one of two pages (by returning a partial view). Both pages rely on javascript/jquery and neither use anything common between the pages. What is the best way to initialise these javascripts on each page? I know there is the AjaxOption OnComplete but both pages are quite dynamic depending on the Model passed and I would rather keep the javascript for both pages seperate rather than having a common method.   I'm localizing application and need to provide JSON representation of local and global resources for JS part of application for all views. My current idea is I'd implement HtmlHelper extension methods like GetLocalResourcesJSON/GetGlobalResourcesJSON which should encode all resource keys+values and return them JSON encoded as string (I'd implement caching as well). At the moment I'm able to retrieve single specific key from global or local resource belonging to current view (using httpContext.GetGlobalResourceObject/GetLocalResourceObject), but I'm not able to find out how to retrieve whole resource object and iterate all its keys+values. Is there any method how to achieve this? it looks like ResourceProviderFactory could be the the key to this problem, but it's not accessible publicly anywhere. I could instantiate ResourceExpressionBuilder and use reflection to retrieve the provider using GetLocal/GlobalResourceProvider() methods, but I don't like using reflection here at all...

While I continue my life as such I see lots of strange buzzwords emerge: Aspectoriented Design, Componentoriented Design, Domain Driven Design, Domain Specific Languages, Serviceoriented (SOA) Design, Test Driven Design, Extreme Programming, Agile Development, Continuous Integration, Dependency Injection, Software Factories ... Is there good book around that I can take with me on a roadtrip while it is taking me on a trip through all (most) of the above, delivering an 10,000 foot view on modern software archiceture and desing principles and approaches.

• C# check age of db Item

  Hello All, I am using C# to send an email with an encrypted link. The encrypted portion of the link contains a time stamp that needs to be used to verify if the link is more than 48 hours old. How do I compare an old time to the current time and find out if the old time is more than 48 hours ago? This is what I have now: var hours = DateTime.Now.Ticks - data.DTM.Value.Ticks; //data.DTM = stored time stamp if (hours.CompareTo(48) > 1) //if link is more than 48 hours old, deny access. return View("LinkExpired"); } Comparing ticks seems like it's a very backwards way to do it and I know that the hours.CompareTo would have to be adjusted if I stick with comparing ticks. How can I just get a value for the number of hours that have passed?

  I'm following the Railscast #223 that introduced Morris.JS. I generate a data set called @orders_yearly in my controller and in my view I have the following to try and render the graph: <%= content_tag :div, "", id: "orders_chart", data: {orders: @orders_yearly} %> Calling @orders_yearly.inspect shows it's just a simple hash: {2009=>1000, 2010=>2000, 2011=>4000, 2012=>100000} I'll need to modify the values for xkey and ykeys in coffeescript to work, but I'm not sure how to make it work with my data set: jQuery -> Morris.Line element: 'orders_chart' data: $('#orders_chart').data('orders') xkey: 'purchased_at' # <------------------ replace with what? ykeys: ['price'] # <---------------------- replace with what? labels: ['Price'] Anyone have any ideas?   Hi. I have a C# ASP.NET MVC project but my controllers are written in F#. For some reason, the following code doesn't work properly. namespace MvcApplication8.Controllers open System.Web.Mvc [<HandleError>] type ImageController() = inherit Controller() member x.Index (i : int) : ActionResult = x.Response.Write i x.View() :> ActionResult The parameter of the action is seemingly ignored. http://localhost:56631/Image/Index/1 = The parameters dictionary contains a null entry for parameter 'i' of non-nullable type 'System.Int32' for method 'System.Web.Mvc.ActionResult Index(Int32)' in 'MvcApplication8.Controllers.ImageController'. An optional parameter must be a reference type, a nullable type, or be declared as an optional parameter. Parameter name: parameters The controller otherwise works fine. I know that plenty of people have written F# mvc code, so, any ideas where I'm going wrong?

• Problem updating a database field from my controller

  I have an update method in my users controller that I call from a HTTPService in Flex 4.   I'm doing a basic select against a view. Unfortunately the result can be slow and I'm getting timeout errors intermittently. How can I increase the timeout? Using .NET 3.5, Sql Server 2000, Linq2Entities I'm using the very basic query List<MyData> result = db.MyData.Where(x.Attribute == search).ToList(); Fixing the query so that it's faster on the DB side is not an option here. Exact Error: "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." Update: I'd prefer to just change it for this one query.

• How do I resolve the config error which states a machine to application error

  I imported a website made in visual studio express 2008 to visual studio express 2010. When I run the home page I get the following error: "It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS." When I looked up the meaning of this on Google I read their needed to be a change to the configuration of the virtual directory. Another suggestion was to change the web config files . T Were these suggestions correct? If so how do I emplement them so that I can view these website pages on my local machine.
