• Automatic Excel Script

  I am a 6th year medical student and I'm working on my thesis. I have no experience with programming whatsoever, a friend recommended me to post my question here. I am strugling with the following problem: I have data of 400 patients, stored in 400 different excel files. Each file contains 34 columns in a specific order, let's say A to Z. The order is the same in each of these 400 files. Now I need to a make a new excel document that contains the first column of each patient. So I need all the first columns of my 400 different excel files, lined up next to each other in a new document. Preferebally in the form of a automatic script. After that I want to do the exact same thing but for the second column, then the third and so on. This is probably a problem that has already been solved. Otherwise could someone help me out?   As title suggests. We are migrating from OpenLDAP as user authentication to Samba 4 AD Domain. But I can't find any information on how to transfer passwords and users to Samba 4 AD. How to migrate all LDAP user base at ou=People,dc=company,dc=com to samba 4 AD domain? I don't need to assistance transferring everything, I only need to transfer user accounts. I've finished migrating them all but user/passwords. Can it be done? If so, how?

• Is there a keyboard shortcut to END an application? (more than just alt+f4)

  I use Spotify, an application which, like many others, remains running when you close the window. That is to say, when I alt+F4, it doesn't have the desired effect. It only closes the window. The little icon at the bottom in the launch bar remains highlighted as an active application. You have to right click the icon and select "Quit" in order to truly close it. I don't feel like doing that every time. Is there a keyboard shortcut equivalent to the ctrl+alt+del end task?

• SharePoint 2007: Moving main site, to be a subsite - How can urls be redirected/changed?

  The setup: SharePoint 2007 (MOSS Enterprise) on WINSVR03/IIS6 One site collection, with one access mapping (http://mainsite) currently I'm moving the main SharePoint site, in our one site collection, to be a subsite in a new site collection. I'm using SharePoint Content Deployment Wizard to complete this task (http://spdeploymentwizard.codeplex.com/). The Question So the main site http://mainsite being moved has many subsites, etc. I want to be sure that urls like this: http://mainsite/subsite/doclib/doc1.docx map to and redirect to the new url: http://newsite/mainsite/subsite/doclib/doc1.docx ? And furthermore: I'm aware of this - http://rdacollaboration.codeplex.com/releases/view/28073 , however is it IIS7 only? That'd wouldn't work for me. Looking at this question - http://serverfault.com/questions/107537/dealing-with-moved-documents-and-sites-in-sharepoint is the only one I see that is similar. Would an IIS redirect of http://mainsite to http://newsite/mainsite work only for the root url?

I have windows XP, and i am going to have to have a VM running: Windows 7 Visual Studio 2008 Sql Server 2008 IIS 7 (8 in a little while) Wamp Photoshop CS5 etc... so i was wondering what should i use to be easier to install and configure, and best performance: Virtual Box or Microsoft's Virtual Machine? Thank you Well i tried Virtual Box, it's always crashing for some reason. I think i'm going to try Virtual PC, just to stick to an all Microsoft Solution.

• Questions about Domains and DNS

  Hi, I am totally new to the DNS and server hosting world and not quite sure what I need. I want to get a domain, forward it to my own server, so that the user sees example.com in the url bar and example.com/foo/bar will work. Depending on what subdomain it is, it should do different things (another base-directory at webserver, ftp, etc). Also my email should be able to be sent to and received by that server. What irritates me, is the fact, that in the A-record I can only list IP-addresses and no ports. So do I have to set up a nameserver on my own server? Or do I accomplish this via vhosts on my webserver? I would appreciate any help or link to a tutorial. I know how DNS works, know some basic apache-stuff, etc... so no need to explain that. Thanks

• Ubuntu: Is there a good tabbed PDF viewer?

  Is there a good non-bloated PDF viewer for (Ubuntu) Linux that supports tabs? I don't want to use Acrobat Reader because it is slow and takes much memory, and my computer isn't the fastest. I know the alternative readers evince and foxit, but they don't support opening different PDF files in tabs. (foxit has that feature on Windows, but the Linux version 1.1, which I just tried, doesn't have it.) For evince, I know many people would like this functionality, but they get ridiculed by Ubuntu people (see here), who say that tabs are the task of a window manager. If that is the case, how can I put all evince windows into one in GNOME?

• Backup Dropbox to Amazon Glacier

  i'm using Dropbox for Backup which means i keep all my files in my Dropbox folder (encrypted using encfs but that should not be relevant). I like this solution because it is automatic and keeps copies of my files on several machines at different locations. The only thing i could see go wrong is that Dropbox has some sort of bug that tells all my machines to delete the files. So currently i do a Backup of the Dropbox folder to an external Harddrive. With Amazon Glacier it seems affordable to automate Backup snapshots of my Dropbox. What i am looking for is a tool that will do this for me - the base case scenario would be that files would go from Dropbox (using their API) directly to Amazon as uploading the ~80GB from my home connection would take forever... • Clear / Flush cached memory

  I have a small VPS with 6GB RAM hosting a couple of websites. Recently I have noticed that my cached memory size is quite high - see below: Cpu(s): 0.1%us, 0.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 99.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.2%hi, 0.4%si, 0.0%st Mem: 6113256k total, 5949620k used, 163636k free, 398584k buffers Swap: 1048564k total, 104k used, 1048460k free, 3586468k cached After investigating if there is some method to have this flushed or cleared I stumbled upon a command which is: sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches I read it could be useful to add this to a chron-task/job. Is this method recommended or could this lead to potential problems? The only concern I have is that I use one Magento installation on Memcached - could this have any negative effects on it? I am certainly not a pro therefore I would very much appreciate some expert advise. PS: My VPS runs on CentOS 5 x64 and I have WHM + NGINX installed.

• Seasgate GoFlex NAS + Horrible Speed = Bad Experience

  I am having issues with transfer speeds from my desktop PC to my NAS. I have my NAS hooked up to a Gigabit Gateway as well as my Desktop with Cat 5e. I see up to 4.0 MB/Second Transfer Rates, the normal is about 2.5 MB/Seconds. There is 3 Partitions on my NAS, Public, Private, Backup. When I transfer from Private to Public I see the speeds above. If its under the same partition almost instant. I was wondering if the speeds I am seeing is in due to my Computer or the NAS. I was looking into building my own Media Server in due to these horrible speeds. Is their anything I can do in the mean time to speed this up? • Viewpoint gem and Exchange resource account

  Hi- I'm trying my hand at using the Viewpoint gem (by zenchild @ github) as the base for a meeting scheduling system. It's great at reading calendar information from regular Exchange 2007 accounts, but I got stuck trying to change the SOAP request header to allow me to read resource accounts as a delegate. I came across http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mstehle/archive/2009/06/16/exchange-api-team-blog-exchange-impersonation-vs-delegate-access.aspx and it seems to be what I need, and I have the feeling I'm on the edge of getting it working, but I'm just not quite there yet as a ruby programmer. • How can I port forward with an airport extreme and a NAT enabled modem?

  I run an Actiontec HD701D modem with NAT to an Airport extreme base station to laptop etc. As you might expect I get double NAT issues. I tried a lot of different things to forward a port, but no luck. Currently the airport is in bridge mode letting the modem handle the NAT, but still can't forward the port. Also to note: firewall is off on the router, firewall is set to allow the application in OSX 10.6.3 and I did forward the port in the router. No luck.

• Best Configuration for Performance - ffmpeg streaming / mp4 /flv

  I have some mpeg video files and a web page. A visitor comes to that web page and according to the selected options, a php script calls ffmpeg and combines the different mpeg files and then converts it to a mp4 file. That mp4 file is then shown to the visitor using flowplayer. The MP4 creation takes some time and flowplayer takes some time to load the file. What do you think is the best way to accomplish this task ? Should i go for streaming server ? I need to reduce the time taken for conversion. Will converting to FLV be faster ?

  Ok. We know database size, number of concurrent users, number of transactions per minute; should choose number of processors, RAID, RAM, mirroring and clustering. There are no exact rule.. but may be there are no rules at all? In my practice in every case I have "legacy" system, and after some inspections and interview I can form an opinion how hardware and design can be improved. But every time when I meet "absolutely" new system (I guess there are no new systems, but sometimes are such tasks) I can't say anything trustful. So I'm interesting how people deal with such tasks? They map task on theirs experience or have some base formulas?

  I have a SQL Server 2008 (ver 10.0.1600) running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise server with 8 GB of physical ram. If I open Task Manager I can see on 'Physical Memory' section of 'Performance' tab that only 340 MB are Available of 8191 Total, but I can't see any process using such amount of memory. Please note SQL Server is memory limited to 6GB (Maximum Server Memory = 6000). If I open Sysinternals Process Explorer, I can see sqlsrvr.exe process has: Private Bytes: 227.000 K Working Set: 140.000 K Virtual Size: 8.762.000 K What does this means? Is there any way to free up this memory for other process? Why Virtual Size figure as allocated memory? I thought that Virtual Size was 'reserved memory' only.

• How to prevent mod_cluster as single point failure?

  In my configuration i used Apche+mod_cluster as a front_end(load balancer) server and two JBOSS AS 7.1.0 as backend server. In my configuration on one system i have install Apache+mod_cluster + JBOSS AS 7.1.0 and on other system JBOSS AS 7.1.0. Both JBOSS AS 7.1.0 are in domain mode means in clustering. My problem is that if Apche+mod_cluster crash than client can not access any JBOSS AS . I want to configure Apache+mod_cluster in Master_Slave format, means if one of Apache+mod_cluter down another Apache+mod_cluster become active and pass client(browser) request to back-end server in normal form without any interruption. Is there any way to make two Apache+mod_cluster to communicate with each other , means to check health status of each other and if any one get down other Apche+mod_cluster will do it's task ......

• Handling UTF-8 with BOM in HTTP

  Say I have a script which at some point serves a plain text file as a content (right after "\n\n"). These files are provided by users, but I can expect they will be UTF-8. So I hard-wire Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8. But while I can teach users to save everything in UTF-8, I can't be very sure that the files will be without BOM ("\xEE\xBB\xBF"), as at least on Windows, this is not very clearly distinguished in common plain text editors and not every one of them uses the same default. So what about these files created on Windows, where they may/may not start with BOM? Should/will server or UA get rid of this debris for me? Or is it my task to prepare clean UTF-8, i.e. open each file and check whether BOM needs to be removed?

• Is it possible to add an existing Azure VM to an Azure Virtual Network?

  Didn't think this was directly related to programming, so thought Superuser would be better than Stack Overflow.... Is it possible to add an existing Azure VM to an Azure Virtual Network if you didn't add it to the virtual network at the time of creation? I can't see an option to change which Virtual Network the VM is connected to. Do you just have to do it at the time you create the VM, and if you don't do it then you will need to re-create the VM and delete the existing one? Example of the scenario: No VM's or Virtual Networks exist I create a VM (VM1), there is no virtual network so it isn't added to one Later I create a Virtual Network in Azure (Network1) It is possible to create another VM (VM2) and connect it to the Virtual Network (Network1), but can I connect VM1 to Network1 or must I delete VM1 and re-create it to get it connected to Network1?

• ESXi Static IP setup with gateway on different subnet

  I've got an ESXi server that I'm trying to assign a static IP to. I'm having trouble setting the gateway because (I presume) the gateway is on a different subnet. I've been able to accomplish this task on normal Linux servers by doing the following: route add 172.50.99.254 eth0 route add -net default gw 172.50.99.254 eth0 Now using the GUI config tools for ESXi I've tried setting the following IP: 172.50.5.151 Netmask: 255.255.252.0 Gateway: 172.50.99.254 The gateway does not stick, and when I try to add the gateway manually using esxcfg-route it says it has no route to the gateway IP. How can I get this static IP set correctly? (I don't have any control over the network setup).

• Outlook - responding with a pre-defined message

  I am trying to be able to reply to an email with a pre-defined message. Every day, I get asked to do the same tasks and I have to reply to each with exactly the same email, similar to: Hi, I received your email, I have now started the task for you. Regards, Dave Tutorials I have found using the email template is more about starting a new email as opposed to replying (as it doesn't appear to keep the thread). In my ideal world, I would like to click reply and insert a pre-written message. The only way I've worked out how to do this is to 'cheat' some what and use the signature as the entire email response (and actually does the job very well other than leaving a space above my reply) I have found similar questions on Super User and other websites but have had no luck, nor have I from my own Google searches. Does any one have any other solutions? Solved This is now solved - in 2 days from this post I can mark it as answer.

• Unlock file on Windows Server 2003 by remote desktop without rebooting

  We've several Windows Server 2003 machines running, each with its own purposes. There are scheduled jobs which synchronizes some files over SFTP using WinSCP. Very sometimes a newly copied file is left locked in the "inbox" folder without any reason. The machine's own background task (programmed in Java) can't move it to the "processed" folder anymore after processing it. Manually moving it only yields the well known error message Cannot move [filename]: it is being used by another person or program. The only resort is to reboot the machine, but we would of course like to avoid that. Any suggestions? I tried Unlocker which works fine locally at WinXP, but doesn't work at those Win2K3 machines by remote desktop (unlock option doesn't show up in rightclick context menu). I tried Process Explorer as well as described in this blog article, but it caused the server to crash (not sure if that's because it's executed through remote desktop).
