• Excel Pivot Tables -- Divide Numerical Column Data into Ranges

  Hi, I have an Excel spreadsheet with a column called "Time Elapsed" that stores the number of days it took to complete a task. I would like to make a pivot table out of this spreadsheet where I divide the "Time Elapsed" column into ranges, e.g., how many tasks took 0 to 4 days to complete how many tasks took 5 to 9 days how many took 10 to 14 days how many took 15+ days Do I have to create new columns in my spreadsheet dedicated to each interval (0 to 4, 5 to 9, etc.) or can I use some feature of pivot tables to separate my one "Time Elapsed" column into intervals? • Tool for purging unneeded backups

  I'm in the common situation where the one of the linux servers I use for storing backups is filling up. I'm wondering what tools are available for doing this. Ideally, what I would like is something that keeps nightlies for the previous month, weeklies for the 2nd to 5th preceding months and retains monthlies (well, every 3rd week) for an indefinite period. Everything that falls outside of that would be deleted after the backups are run. I could write a script to do this, but I feel like there must be a standard tool for this task.

• Customizing the windows server 2008 RDP login screen possible?

  Hi, I'm working with RDP sessions quite frequently. As we work in teams and all use the same user account on a particular computer (I know...) I was wondering if there was a way to display from which computer (hostname, computername) the person is connecting. The login screen I get when two users are already connected looks like this (german): I'd love it, if the screen would display from where the logged in user is connecting e.g. "COMPUTER\user connected from MYCOMPUTERNAME". This way I would know whom to ask to disconnect so I can hop onto the session. If I remember correctly the login screen looked different for previous Windows versions including this connection information. Any way I can easily enable this or is this just standard windows behavior and there is no way to tell from where the user is connecting (btw: Task Manager shows the computername of the connected user).

• Simulating mouse clicks at specific screen coordinates

  I would like to be able to bind some keys to mouse clicks done in specific locations. For example: when I press F1 I should get a left mouse click at coordinates 300x350, F2 at 600x350 and so on. Even better if this could be bound to a specific window application so that coordinates could be relative to it instead of the base desktop. Is there a software which allows this? ADDITION: Ok autohotkey is great but I have problems with my particular setup. Quoting my comment below: I'm using it with an old game (championship manager 01/02) which runs in windowed mode (and I have to set win98 compatibility for it to run): I can get the mouse to move but no click goes to the application I have read this FAQ but it didn't help, this is the script I tried: SendMode Play SetKeyDelay, 0, 50, Play F1::Click 42, 191 F2::ControlSend ahk_class main, Click, Championship Manager 01/02 Still no luck: pointer moves but no click goes through.

• Winlogon Application Error [closed]

  This error is happening to 6 out of 32 computers. I have created a base image from scratch using Ghost Enterprise, but error still shows on the same machines. It happens at the log on prompt and after doing a soft reset the message goes away, but it comes back eventually. -Error message- The Instruction at "0X74eF400e" referenced Memory at "0X00000000" The memory could not be "Written". Winlogon.exe - Application Error Any reason why this is happening? I have tried to run a memTest but everything shows okay.

  I want to do two things: Set up a virtual machine on Windows 7 to run Ubuntu Set up a way for the virtual machine to read the windows disk or windows to have read/write access to the virtual machine's disk. My goal is to have a place where both Ubuntu and Windows can read and write. What software is good for this task? Are their free programs that can run virtual machines? Also if my machine is running Windows 7 64-bit, can I install Ubuntu 32-bit? Or am I forced to use Ubuntu 64-bit? Or does it not matter?

• Okular (on Ubuntu 9.10) prints multiple pages per sheet (n-up) very small

  I'm trying to print a set of beamer slides with multiple slides per page (4-up or 6-up). When I select 4 pages or 6 pages per sheet in the Okular print dialog, the pages print quite small (perhaps even tiny -- about 1.75" by 1.25") and leave significant white-space on the page. I can get around this behavior by using the pdfnup utility (in the pdfjam package); which will correctly generate a 4- or 6-up pdf file but it's annoying to generate a second pdf file when I should be able to accomplish this task from the print dialog. Details: Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), 64-bit, Color Postscript printer.

• users unable to add registry keys to HKCU

  I may not have this 100% correct so need some clarification. Are normal users on a 2003 terminal server allowed to add registry keys the their own HKCU section in the registry, or are they only allowed to edit existing ones? The reason I ask is that we have 3 keys that we need to add for each user on login. I thought it would be as simple as having a straightforward batchscript run that silently adds the keys for the user. Here is what I used: regedit.exe "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\example.reg" When the user runs this batch scipt, they see nothing as you would expect, but the keys are not added. If I simply run the .reg file as the user, it asks if I want to add the key, but then has an error saying there was an error accessing the registry. Do I need something a bit more complex to accomplish this task.   I try to run a specified command on a desired time. I found at for this, and it seems to work fine if I run: echo "ls -al / > /home/florin/test.txt" | at 4:21am But I want to run a different thing: /usr/bin/firefox -new-tab http://google.ro I tried adapting the first line with my action (running it in terminal opens a new Firefox tab with http://google.ro, so the command is correct), but with at, it does not work: echo "firefox -new-tab http://google.ro" | at 4:23am The task seems to be scheduled, but it does not run. When running the previous line I get the default reply from at: warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh Should my Firefox command be differently run in sh? • How can I use fetchmail (or another email grabber) with OSX keychain for authentication?

  Every fetchmail tutorial I've read says putting your email account password clear-text in a config file is safe. However, I prefer security through layers (since, if my terminal is up and someone suspecting such email foolery slides over and simply types "grep -i pass ~/.*" then, oops, all my base are belong to them!). Now, with msmtp (as opposed to sendmail) I can authenticate using the OSX keychain. Is there an email 'grabber' that lets me use Keychains (specifically the OSX keychain) or at least, that lets me MD5 the password? This is a duplicate of my unanswered question on serverfault. I've put it on superuser because I'm doing this on a personal computer (viz. with OSX) so it's more of a superuser question.

• Windows FTP client to mirror ftp sites?

  I need a Windows application that works like *nix's lftp. The Windows host will download the latest changes made to FTP Server #1, and upload those changes to FTP Server #2. Server #2 can't pull files directly from Server #1 because it's a www shared host with no shell account. The requirements are: 1. Windows app available for XP/Vista/W7 2. Must run either as icon or service. I don't want to have an extra icon open in the task bar 3. Reliable, so I don't have to worry about it. Is there an application you would recommend? Thank you.

• Nexenta under KVM?

  I have an Ubuntu Server running KVM. I'd like to get the benefits of ZFS so I was thinking of installing a virtual machine under KVM running Nexenta (or NexentaStor), allowing that virtual machine to have raw access to a couple of physical hard disks, and then having it share its file system with NFS so that Ubuntu can access it. I've never tried setting up KVM so that the virtual machine has access to physical drives. Does this sound feasible, and is there anything I need to watch out for? Has someone already documented something like this? Does Nexenta/ZFS function basically as well in the virtual environment as if they were running base bones? I can take a small performance hit, but I don't want it to not be as reliable because of the virtualization. Thanks.

• Munin Aggregate Graphs from several servers

  I am using DNS round robin load balancing and have divided my total traffic onto multiple servers. Each server does around 300-400req/second but I am interested in having an aggregate graph telling me the TOTAL of all requests per second served by our architecture. Is there any way I can do this. Right now each graph in Munin comes as a separate graph as they depict things on one server. • Volume display for laptop missing after driver update

  I have a Dell Inspiron 1520, and I just updated my audio drivers to be able to use Stereo Mix. It's a SigmaTel audio driver. Prior to the update, whenever I used the hardware buttons to update volume or mute/unmute speakers, it would always have a nice display like this one: But, for volume instead of screen brightness. The hardware buttons still work fortunately, but the volume display is gone. Is there a place I can configure this setting and re-enable it? The speaker icon in task tray was also disabled with the update, but I re-enabled that from the Control Panel. Is this simply gone with the driver update? Thanks for the help!

  I'm trying to optimise my site for SEO and it seems as though their is a 302 direct in action for the http requests. I'm hosting my app on a Tomcat 6 server which lies behind an Apache 2 server. I use the ProxyPass method (http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/proxy-howto.html) to forward all requests to port 8080 (the port my app is hosted on). I've seen a lot of advice on how to set the redirect type when using the VirtualHost method but none to do with ProxyPass. The app is a Struts app that forwards users on to index.jsp when they hit the base url. Could this also be the issue? I'm grateful for any help on this one! Cheers!

To analyse this data I want to be able to easily tag sections of text with keywords (the tags need to be able to overlap, and perhaps be organised hierarchically) and later be able to collate those sections from across multiple files. I need to be able to do this on a Mac. It feels like a simple task but I can't find any software for doing it that isn't either horribly clunky or a massive overkill worth hundreds of pounds. As there is only a very small user-base who has access to the debug-page, I would like to hide it based on IP address and return 404 to clients not accessing from our VPN. • VMware - Watching multiple virtual machine screens

  Hi, I don't know even if I put the question right, but here's what I'd like to accomplish. I have avoided specifying exact Vmware virtualization product here because I'm not sure which one would be most suitable for the task at hand. I am developing an application that works in local network. This application has to run on several computers at the same time, and it's important to me, as a developer and tester, to see (literally) how it behaves at all times on all computers. Is there any way to connect to screens of virtual machines deployed on ESX, ESXi, Sever 2.0, or some other product, so that I can see something like grid of screens, say 4x4 or 6x4 or whatever number of scaled screens, at the same time? Ability to interact with screens directly from grid (by double-clicking a screen, for instance, and then getting full resolution screen) would be greatly appreciated, of course. I hope that someone understood what I meant here. :)

• Windows XP: Consequences of setting a password for an account

  I do not quite understand how Windows (specifically Windows XP) handles accounts with/without passwords. As far as I can see, on a fresh Windows XP install I have one default account which has admin rights does not have a password will auto-login (without password prompt) when the computer boots What happens if I set a password for this account? Will it still auto-login? Or will it always prompt for the PW? And generally, what consequences does it have if I set a password? I noted that Scheduled Tasks apparently cannot run under an account w/o password (creating a scheduled task will prompt for the account PW). Is there anything that will not work with a password set? Why is it even possible to have accounts without a password? I have some Unix/Linux background, but the concepts appear a little different under Windows.

  I've recently set up folder redirection for my user profile in a domain. For now, I've redirected AppData, Desktop, Pictures, Documents and Favorites. So far, so good. But now I've noticed a quite disturbing side effect of the whole thing. Whenever I click any of my pinned elements on the task bar, I get the following warning: The shortcuts get synced as well and are no longer trusted. They're located at \\DFS\UserData\Profiles\OliverSalzburg\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar That seems like it could be a problem when rolling it out to the whole company.

• Using sed to convert hex characters in postgresql dump file

  I am working on moving several databases from a Postgresql 8.3 server to a Postgresql 8.4 server. It has worked fine so far, but one base has given me some trouble. The database is listed as unicode-encoded in the 8.3-server, but somehow a client program has managed to inject some invalid unicode data into it. When I do a normal dump and restore using postgres' custom format, the new server won't accept it, complaining about unicode errors. My plan is to do a plain text dump of the database, then use sed to replace the invalid characters with nothing (they are not needed). But how do you make sed work on hex/binary values in a file?

  Hi Can anyone point me in the direction of some documentation (or provide the information here) about the following tables, created by JBoss 5.1.0 when it starts up? I know what they are for at a high level, and know why they are there, but I could do with some lower-level documentation about each table's purpose. The tables are: hilosequences timers jbm_counter jbm_dual jbm_id_cache jbm_msg jbm_msg_ref jbm_postoffice jbm_role jbm_tx jbm_user I know that the first two are associated with uuid-key-generator and the EJB Timer Service respectively, while the rest are associated with JBoss Messaging. What I want to know is something along the lines of "jmg_msg stores each message when it is created...", that kind of thing. I wasn't sure where to ask this question, ServerFault or StackOverflow, but I decided it wasn't programming related so thought I should put it here - I hope that's ok! Thanks Rich
