• How relevant is UTF-7 when it comes to parsing emails?

  I recently implemented incoming emails for an application and boy, did I open the gates of hell? Since then every other day an email arrives that makes the app fail in a different way. One of those things is emails encoded as UTF-7. Most emails come as ASCII, some of the Latin encodings, or thankfully, UTF-8. Hotmail error messages (like email address doesn't exist or quota exceeded) seem to come as UTF-7. Unfortunately, UTF-7 is not an encoding Ruby understands: > "hello world".encode("utf-8", "utf-7") Encoding::ConverterNotFoundError: code converter not found (UTF-7 to UTF-8) > Encoding::UTF_7 => #<Encoding:UTF-7 (dummy)> My application doesn't crash, it actually handles the email quite well, but it does send me a notification about the potential error. I spent some time googling and I can't find anyone that implemented the conversion, at least not as a Ruby 1.9.3 Encoding::Converter. So, my question is, since I never got an email with actual content, from an actual person, in UTF-7, how relevant is that encoding? can I safely ignore it?

• New database profiling support in ANTS Performance Profiler

  In May last year, the ANTS Performance Profiler team added the ability to profile database requests your application makes to SQL Server or Oracle. The really cool thing is that you’re shown those requests in the application’s call tree, so you can see what .NET code caused those queries to run. It’s particularly helpful if you’re using an ORM which automagically generates and runs queries for you, but which doesn’t necessarily do it in the most efficient way possible. Now by popular demand, we’ve added support for profiling MySQL (or MariaDB) and PostgreSQL, so you can see queries run against those databases too. Some of you have also said that you’re using the Devart dotConnect data providers instead of the native .NET ones, so we’ve added support for those drivers too. Hope it helps! • Web Sites All Start When Debugging a Web Site - Visual Studio 2010

  I wanted to blog about this because it was an annoyance to me and I couldn't figure out why for quite some time. Have you ever tried debugging one web application in your solution but when you do, all other web sites in your solution build and then start up their respective Visual Studio Development Server? It's not a major problem, but it adds time to waiting for what you are actually trying to debug to start up. After digging through Visual Studio 2010 settings, I finally found the option to turn it off. It is called Always Start When Debugging and is located in the Properties pane for the web project (click on the project .proj file in Visual Studio IDE). This is set to True by default each time you create a new Web Application project. Setting this to false will solve your problems. You will need to set this to false for all web applications in your solution as shown below: In addition, you can set properties on which port the development server uses each time it debugs. This is helpful if you want the port to stay the same for testing purposes. In contrast, you can set it to use a dynamic port each time so if you have a co-worker that is debugging it on a different session on the same server, you won't run into any problems with using the same port. The machine won't allow you to debug two sessions on the same port. Pretty basic stuff but it seemed like a really quirky setting to me.

• Iphone/Android app – chatroom development – what framework & hosting needs?

  I have some experience regarding IPhone and Android development but I am now struggling to solve a new class of problem: apps that involve a client/server chatroom feature. That is, an app when people can exchange text over the internet, and without having the app to constantly “pull” content from the server. So that problem can’t be solved with a normal php/mysql website, there must be some kind of application running on a server that is able to send message from the server to the phone, rather than having the phone to check for new messages every 10 seconds… So I’m looking for ways to solve the different problems here: What framework should I use on the two sides (phone / server)? It should be some kind of library that doesn’t prevent me to write paid apps. It should also be possible to have the same server for the Iphone and android version of the app. What server / hosting solution do I need with what sort of features, I just have no experience regarding server application that can handle and initiate multiple connections and are hosted on hardware that is always online I tried to find resources online but couldn’t so far, either the libraries had the wrong kind of license/language or I just didn’t understand… Sometimes there were nice tutorial but for different needs such as peer2peer chat over local network… Same with the server and the hosting problem, not sure where to start really, I’m calling for help and I promise I will complete this page with notes about the experience I will get :-) Obviously the ideal would be to find a tutorial I missed that include client code, server code and a free scalable server… That being said, If I see something as good, it probably means that I have eaten the wrong kind of mushroom again… So, failing that, any pointer which might help me toward that quest, would be greatly appreciated. • How to use the unit of work and repository patterns in a service oriented enviroment

  I've created an application framework using the unit of work and repository patterns for it's data layer. Data consumer layers such as presentation depend on the data layer design. For example a CRUD abstract form has a dependency to a repository (IRepository). This architecture works like a charm in client/server environments (Ex. a WPF application and a SQL Server). But I'm looking for a good pattern to change or reuse this architecture for a service oriented environment. Of course I have some ideas: Idea 1: The "Adapter" design pattern Keep the current architecture and create a new unit of work and repository implementation which can work with a service instead of the ORM. Data layer consumers are loosely coupled to the data layer so it's possible but the problem is about the unit of work; I have to create a context which tracks the objects state at the client side and sends the changes to the server side on calling the "Commit" (Something that I think the RIA has done for Silverlight). Here the diagram: ----------- CLIENT----------- | ------------------ SERVER ---------------------- [ UI ] -> [ UoW/Repository ] ---> [ Web Services ] -> [ UoW/Repository ] -> [DB] Idea 2: Add another layer Add another layer (let say "local services" or "data provider"), then put it between the data layer (unit of work and repository) and the data consumer layers (like UI). Then I have to rewrite the consumer classes (CRUD and other classes which are dependent to IRepository) to depend on another interface. • Which tools should be used for data migration between environments?

  Ø  With the Oracle Utilities Application Framework based products there are a number of tools provided that can be used to transfer data from one environment to another. Ø  There are three main tools that implementations use: §  ConfigLab - A configurable copy facility is metadata aware and therefore understands the relationships between objects and by invoking the relevant maintenance objects validates the data copied. This utility uses the object validation to help ensure data integrity. Basically it is a set of configuration tables and a set of batch jobs to perform the migration of data. §  Bundling - A configurable release management tool that allows exporting of Advanced Configuration Environment based objects (business services, business objects, UI Maps etc) from one environment to another. §  Blueprint - An Oracle Utilities Software Development Kit (SDK) based tool to import metadata from the development environment to your initial testing environment. The utility is command line based and basically uses a text based configuration file to drive the utility on the source and target sides. Ø  Each tool has a role in an implementation but you must be careful to use the right tool for the right job within an implementation. The suggestions are as follows: §  Only use the Blueprint tool for migrating data from your development platform to your initial test environment. The blueprint tool is not designed to move large amounts of data and certainly is risky, if not used correctly, and can potentially break the integrity of your data. §  The SDK provides the configuration data that it is used for (mainly meta-data). This should not be extended as, while it can perform data migration on any data, it is not efficient and risky for certain types of configuration data. • Is there a resource that explains the benefits of layered programming?

  Some developers I know favor what I would call a procedural programming style. I recognize that procedural programming has its uses, albeit not in the business application world of .NET programming. So let's say we have a winform application with a buttonclick event. The buttonclick handles everything from the UI configuration to the database call and data manipulation. So you end up with a method that is 100's of lines of code long. Outside the fact that this code can't be considered test-able for various reasons, this style of programming is fragile to change. I can talk bout OO, Anti-patterns, etc. The problem is that any distinct topic I can dream up requires a great deal of explanation to understand the potential benefits. Outside of finding a new job (lots of businesses program this way), how can I teach these kinds of developers how to write better code? Obviously we can't sit around a round table and discuss pro's and con's all day due to time constraints and real work that has to be done. Although, training and intense training is the only thing I can think of to fix these problems. Not to say I write perfect code, I most certainly do not. I do believe there are certain best practices that should be followed as a rule E.G. OO in the context of .NET. The most common excuse I hear is "we can't write code fast enough if we do it like that".

• Best option for PDF viewer embedded in web app

  I have a web app that needs to be able to display a PDF. It needs to allow the user to page through the PDF, and my application needs to be able to know which page is currently being viewed, because other aspects of the web app will change based on the current page. Ideally it would not be dependent on the client having Adobe Reader but I could probably support that dependency. What are my best options for this? My application stack consists of ASP.NET 4 along with optionally Silverlight 5. Also, I could use something that is client-side based as well using JavaScript / HTML if such a thing exists. I found ComponentOne's offering for this and that seems like the leading candidate at this point, but I want to know if there are other options I should consider. Edit: Per Fosco's comment, converting the PDF to another format (such as HTML) might be an option, as long as I could tie back parts of the converted document to the original PDF page #s. Another note: this has to run entirely on our servers. It would not be acceptable to use a third-party service to view the PDFs.

  Let me explain the situation. I started transforming a "old (.Net 2.0)" Application into a webapplication. Problem here is, that no-one here is really acquainted with the UX of a website (Simple, efficient). Eventhough, i still have to regard that the website can be tailored to a customer needs through parameters (yeah, i know :s ) For example: I wanted to have a layout similar to invoicemachine (= as simple as possible). -- He wants a Ribbon toolbar. Going to a supplier gives the list of supplier -- He wants to display the "Create Supplier" screen where you can use the wildcards in a certain textbox, to search for a specific Supplier and then give the list of the suppliers. Also, i need 4 search/filter mechanisms: people can search per field with wildmarks can filter the suppliers search a keyword through all the data of a supplier filter the "list Suppliers" page by the first letter of the name. LIST Suppliers | A | D | Z Adam Wrincle ADD |EDIT |Delete Damzel InDistress ADD |EDIT |Delete Zorro ADD |EDIT |Delete I can't seem to get through to him, that the UX of a website needs to be differently than a Windows Application. If he wants to bring all the logic of the windows app into a website, why letting me build a website then? Stick to the old solution. Am i mistaking so hard or how could i convince / show him that an online-solution is something different than the offline solution. He already "saw" online solutions of other applications to get an idea, but if i suggest something he won't listen (if it's GUI / UX related, that is).

• Setting different default applications for different Desktop Environment

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 with default Unity interface. I installed later the KDE desktop, XFCE, LXDE, gnome-shell and Cinnamon. The KDE comes with different default applications than Unity, such as kwrite for text editing, konsole as virtual terminal, kfontview for font viewing and installing, dolphin as File browser etc. Other DE come with some other default applications. The problem arises when you want to open a file such as a text file, with which can both be opened by gedit and kwrite, I want to use kwrite on KDE and gedit on Unity or Gnome. But, there is no way to set like this. I can set default application for text file by changing respective settings in both KDE and Unity, but It become default for both DE. For example, If I set kfontviewer as default font viewing application in KDE, it also opens fonts when I am in Unity or Gnome and vice versa. This is a problem because, loading other DE's program takes long time than the default one for the used DE. My question is: Can I use different default applications for different DE? How?

• Would this be viewed poorly amongst the programming community?

  So one of my responsibilities at work is to build an internal tool that helps the workers enter in all their information. It's an enterprise application that is similar to a Windows forms database tool. So it's not much different than like developing a Word + Excel combo application, but the average person in this workgroup is a 20-40 year old woman or a random chatty male type. Plus I know all of these people are heavily involved with Facebook on a daily basis. How bad would it be if I styled my new interface to be similar to what Facebook does. People could get award points and stuff when they fill out different types of forms and basically compete against each other like it was a game. When people had completed one, it would be posted on their wall and everyone could comment/like stuff just like in Facebook. And it would be like they are doing peer reviewing for fun. The rewards would be outstanding I would imagine. These people are so into Facebook and Facebook games that productivity would rise due to them trying to compete and earn points and achievements. Would this be taking advantage of the people by 'tricking them into working harder by giving them a game' or would it be viewed as something that would improve happiness at work?

  Hi I bought a new Seagate 2TB external hard disk. I opened the drive's application in my virtual windows, did product registration using the application present in it. I have few questions on how best to use it. The drive by default has some files and folders - setup.exe, System Volume Information, USB 3.0 PC Card Adapter etc,. I copied all the files to my laptop. Is it safe to delete these files? It has a dash board for windows which allows to tune power options, test the drive etc. Will I be able to use the dash board if I put back all these files and mount on windows again? I want to partition and format the hard disk. Data I like to store is Around 10 to 20 GB Files - Virtual box images. Around 4GB Files - Dvd images. Other Movies and personal Files. What is the best filesystem to store very huge files like 10 to 20GB files. So that they are written and accessed fast also best uses the drive's capacity. If I leave one of the partition as ntfs and others to different files systems, will it be able to mount on windows and Will I be able to use the device's dash board? Note: I dont need any encryption for my data. Any other advice on using the hard disk is also welcome.

• What deployment framework to use?

  We are trying to figure out what deployment method/framework to use with a python application, it has a basic wsgi server to make some REST resources available and a set of static web pages with the interface that are served through apache. The situation is as follows: My team works in isolated parts of the program and sometimes together in specific modules, we have different testing servers and one master server, we all work locally, sync the code using git, and then run a bash script that copies the files from the windows machines to the indicated linux server(using ssh) and then restarts the app. After thinking about it this doesn't seem to be the right way to do it, the script overwrites all the files in the server with the local files everytime. We want to be able to work in the same server without the worry of overwriting other people's code and we need to deploy to different servers to avoid restarting the service while others work with it and in the near future we need to deploy to the master or several clones of the master server when the application reaches a more mature state. We found serveral options capistrano, kwate, chef or fortress, even fleet but we wanted to have opinions from people that has used them to be sure it is what we need. So this are the main questions: Are these the kind of programs we should be looking at to achive a safe concurrent deployment process? Which one have you used/recommend and why? do you think it would help in our actual situation? Thank you so much for your feedback and advice on this.

• A good tool for browser automation/client-side Web scripting

  I'm interested in adopting a tool/scripting language to automate some daily tasks connected with fighting forum spammers. A brief overview of these tasks: analyze new registrations and posts on a phpBB forum, and delete or deactivate spammers using a website/community that collects such spam reports. Typically such automation is integrated into the phpBB installation itself, which certainly has its advantages. My approach has the advantage of independent operation, etc. One way to think about this is in terms of browser automation. I've used iOpus iMacros for Firefox (the free version) in the past to respond to individual spammers, but current attacks are highly distributed. My "logic" for pigeonholing spammers vs. nonspammers seems beyond the easy reach of the free version of iMacros. From a more technical perspective one can think about dispensing with the browser altogether and programming GET/POST requests directed to my forum and other Web-based resources. I'm familiar with some scripting languages like Ruby and Lua, but I could be persuaded that a compiled application is better suited for these tasks. However in my experience the dynamic flexibility of interpreted environments is very useful in prototyping and debugging the application logic. So I'm leaning in the direction of scripting languages. Among browsers I favor Firefox and Chrome. I use both Windows and Linux platforms, and if the tool can adapt to an Android platform, it would make a neat demonstration of skills, yes?   I'm not sure if this fits on SO, but other SE sites don't seem to fit either, so I understand when this question gets moved, Although I'd like to avoid getting it closed due to being offtopics, since I think that this question might fit, considering this part of the FAQ: Stack Overflow is for professional and enthusiast programmers, ... covers … a specific programming problem ... matters that are unique to the programming profession Sorry for the lengthy Introduction, though. When Software is advertised, it is usually Software for one (or more) specific purpose, such as: Mozilla Firefox - A Web Browser Ubuntu - An Operating System Python - A Programming Language Visual Studio - A Development Studio ... And so on. But when writing Libraries, that is, Software that doesn't necessarily serve one specific purpose, but instead multiple purposes, which are usually supposed to be used inside an application, such as: Irrlicht - A 3D Engine Qt - An Application Framework ... The process of advertisement gets a little more difficult. I'm a developer of the latter kind of Software, and I naturally want to advertise my Software. It's not commercial Software; It's not GPL either. It's completely free (Licensed under the MIT License :-)). I naturally host my stuff at github, which technically makes it very easy to access the software, and I thought that these might be possible options, although I have no experience with them: Submit the Software to Freshmeat, and hope for the best Submit the Software to Sourceforge, and hope someone accidently stumbles over it Write spammails, and get death threats via Mail ... But something tells me that these methods are probably not the best Methods. So, my final question would be, How does the Average Joe Hobby Programmer advertise his/her Software Library?

• Best approach for utility class library using Visual Studio

  I have a collection of classes that I commonly (but not always) use when developing WPF applications. The trouble I have is that if I want to use only a subset of the classes, I have three options: Distribute the entire DLL. While this approach makes code maintenance easier, it does require distributing a large DLL for minimal code functionality. Copy the classes I need to the current application. This approach solves the problem of not distributing unused code, but completely eliminates code maintenance. Maintain each class/feature in a separate project. This solves both problems from above, but then I have dramatically increased the number of files that need to be distributed, and it bloats my VS solution with tiny projects. Ideally, I'd like a combination of 1 & 3: A single project that contains all of my utility classes but builds to a DLL containing only the classes that are used in the current application. Are there any other common approaches that I haven't considered? Is there any way to do what I want? Thank you.

• How do I work around sudo 'segmentation fault' on basic bash commands?

  I am sure the answers are out there, but alas there are too many answers (here and elsewhere) to other questions stopping me from finding them. I just encountered something substantially similar to what is described at the closed SO question, sudo : “segmentation fault” Ubuntu maverick [closed]. My team is using Ubuntu 11.04 on VMWare Workstation 8.0.4. We are doing development using c++, Xenomai, Qt, and Qt Creator. When we simulate our application on the virtual machine, we currently need to launch Qt Creator with sudo. My colleague mentioned today that he has been having issues where his workstation locks up and he needs to restart and that occasionally he has the issue that all sudo bash commands return "segmentation fault". I just ran our application in simulation mode. I was running Qt Creator under sudo and Qt Creator received the signal abort (if I recall). Afterward, every command executed with sudo from sudo qtcreator to sudo ls resulted in the message Segmentation fault. I clicked on the power widget to see if I could log out, but the system shut down straightaway without prompting. My understanding is that we run sudo because of a permissions issue with Xenomai and the VM as currently configured, but my colleague has a workaround for this. I expect that not running Qt Creator under sudo -- something that has always made me nervous -- will help contain this issue, but I find it troubling that this could happen and manifest as it does. Does anyone know what is happening? Any recommendations on how to work around this issue? This is happening often to I am trying tolobby for VM changes to be able to run the process without sudo.
