• Re-encoding a video file and increasing the size -- does this improve the quality?

  If I have a video file at 320x240 resolution which I want to re-encode (because I don't like the encoding it's in now) and I also want to play it at double size (640x480), will I get higher quality if I scale it up to 640x480 when I convert it to a new format, verses keeping it at 320x240 in the new format and playing it at double size? This probably depends on the program used to convert, and if so, please let me know any program which might increase the quality. Here's my thinking. If I play a 320x240 file at double size, the system has to scale up each frame in real time, whereas if I scale up while recompressing the system may be able to use a more intensive algorythm like Bicubic interpolation . However I am not sure if this is true or not.

  I have a website http://someplace.acme.com that I want my users to access via http://myplace.mycorp.com - pretty standard reverse proxy setup. The special requirement: any js file - either identified by the .js extension and/or the mime-type (if that is possible) text/javascript needs to be served from a different location, a local tool that inspects the js for potential threats. • monitor power and lock screen (Ubuntu Lucid)

  Hi, I'm trying to get my screen to turn off whenever I lock my screen. I know that in Power Management, there's an option to turn off the screen after a set amount of time, and I know about xset dpms force off, but the former doesn't allow me to turn off the screen from the logout menu, and the latter only turns the screen off for a short amount of time (1 minute or so. The screen just turns back on by itself). Is there a script I can modify to change what happens when "Lock screen" from the logout menu is selected, or is there a script I can add to the panel to lock the screen and then turn the monitor off (and turning it back on when I shake the mouse or something)? • Possible to recover older, previously deleted files with R-studio?

  The files and directories on one of my ntfs partition were wiped out last time. I used R-studio to scan the partition, and it did find many files, actually more than the capacity of the partition. This is because R-studio found files that were deleted even earlier. So I wonder if it is possible to specify those files and directories deleted last time instead of those deleted earlier for recovery? R-studio has a free demo version, for which scanning is free,but recovery isn't. • Frequent occurence of FULL GC.

  Hi, There is a frequent occurence of FULL GC in our system. We are using Java application running on Tomcat server. Our application is running using internal load balancer setup. We are seeing lot of Full GC's in the server logs due to which the application is hung and Proxy errors are occured. • USB Format Error

  I'm having a real headache trying to reformat a USB drive. Initially it had a 200mb EFI partition and it caused the drive to disappear altogether. Since then I ran the CMD and wiped the disk using 'diskpart'. It took a few attempts but it finally cleaned the drive. Since then it has reappeared under (:E) however I am unable to access the drive and Windows is preventing me from reformatting it. I am just presented with 'Windows was unable to complete the format'. It's now acting like a CD drive instead of removable storage. I've tried going through Disk Management and I'm presented with the same error. I've removed the USB controllers from Device Manager - when the drive is connected again it re-installs the drivers and acts the same way. Any help given will be greatly appreciated, thank you. (Windows 7 machine)

• How to choose my own filename format for subscribed podcast files?

  I subscribe to several podcasts where the filenames of the downloaded mp3 files have no particular pattern to them. When I copy the directory of accumulated mp3 files into my mp3 player, the files play in alphabetical order. What I really want is to play the files chronologically by release date. I currently use iTunes on Windows XP to download the files. What I do now is manually rename the files, adding the date in YYYYMMDD format to the start of each filename so that an alphabetical listing of files will correspond to their chronological order when I listen to them later in PocketTunes on my Palm Centro. Is there some way to get the release date into the filename automatically? If so, I could automate or possibly skip the file renaming step. I would switch from iTunes to something else if that would solve my problem. The file creation time on my local disk isn't a reliable indicator because sometimes I download a few days worth of content at one time, and the files don't necessarily get downloaded in chronological order.

• How can I set Qmail to relay all mail to one address

  I'm new to qmail it's setup and working like it should. I need to set it to do something a bit different. I need it to take all mail that would be incoming to it and relay all of that to one address as opposed to whatever address they could have possibly set it to. The idea is we have setup a test enviroment and we want no e-mails from a test server to actually go out to real people so this relay server will catch all of that outgoing mail and throw it into a test e-mail account inbox to check for errors and so forth. I'm honestly not sure if this is even possible so if it's not let me know now so I can come up with a different method to manage all these test e-mails. Thanks

• Launching multiple applications with a single command/script/shortcut

  I realized a few days ago that every time I sit down at work, I do a few things after unlocking my computer. First, I open up Firefox, then I open up Chrome, then I log in to Digsby. I realized I could probably save repeating this daily by writing a small batch script to open up Firefox and Chrome , but I couldn't figure out how to make it work.. and since the whole effort is to save time I don't want to bash my head around in the windows command prompt to do it. I also tired this in powershell but ran in to a bunch of security nonsense. Is there a way to do this that I am missing? Bonus points if somebody has figured out how to manipulate Digsby via COM , scripting, or python =)

• Which PSU should I chose? The biggest is the best?

  I'm fully aware of PSU's "Active PFC" and that they won't consume the written W all the time. (Makes sense). But now I'm before a PSU replacement (Guys: NEVER buy a Chieftec. Seriously.) The question is: If one can get a bigger one (in my case 750W and 650W) ... should that person go for the bigger one ? (The difference in price is not much). No, I don't think I'll soon use all that much. (Help (if you want of course) to make the question more generic if the question is really not OK in this form. I've been wondering about this for a time already. In my case it would be XFX Black Edition Silver 750W and 650W)

• Setting up a copy of a site with IIS 7?

  I have a site running on IIS with a dyndns.org domain that points to the IP of the Windows 2008 machine hosting it. I need a copy of that site for development purposes. I set up another folder with all the files, and create a new site in IIS. I don't really have a domain for it, so I was just going to use the IP address. When I go to localhost, 127.0.0.1, or the internal IP, I get bad hostname. If I use the IP address on port 80 (the same as the real version of the site), I get 404 not found. If I use a different port so I don't have them both on the same IP with the same port, I get connection timed out. How do I go about setting this up?

• Redirect traffic to local address so iOS speedtest app measures LAN speed

  I have mounted a Speedtest Mini server on a local LAMP, so I can test my LAN speeds effortlessly just by opening the URL with a Flash enabled web browser, the thing is, I want my iOS and Android devices to test with the LAN server too, not with the WAN, as I'm trying to measure LAN-Only performance. Is there a way so I can redirect the traffic intended to an specific external IP (The one of the real server) to my local server?. I know the servers IP as a short Wireshark analysis gave me the data, but still searching for a way to make that redirect. I have Jailbreak and root on my devices, so playing with system files is not a problem. I've tried mounting a proxy and making redirects by the hosts file and domain names, but it looks like Ookla's app relies on IP address only.

• Detecting hardware and installing drivers in Windows XP

  I have on my desk a computer that I am reinstalling. I have just completed the Windows XP install , which is professional service pack 3. I have also installed an AV package. Now it is time to install the audio and display drivers. Windows Update does not detect the Display card, and neither the audio device. I really have no idea what devices are present in this system, and I am thinking of opening the case, and reading some IDs from the cards themselves. Before I do this, is there not some kind of tool that can automatically detect hardware and install drivers automatically. If not then at least tell me what devices are present, with some real descriptions, so I can search for drivers.

• Thunderbird 3.0.2 stops automatically checking for email

  Since upgrading to Thunderbird 3.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.6, Thunderbird will intermittently stop checking for messages automatically. Frequently I am presented with the error "This folder is being processed" when manually checking for mail. Restarting Thunderbird fixes the problem, but I have noticed hours can go by where auto checking isn't working, and restarting shows there were dozens of messages waiting to be delivered in that down time. Occasionally I will see "indexing 1 of 2 messages - 0% complete" in the status bar, it will sit there for a long time. Actions I've taken to fix: Deleted all .msf files in all accounts Removed News & Blogs account Staggered the "automatically check for mail" interval for each account Worth noting: after waking up the macbook, TB usually needs to be restarted to resume auto checking for mail. Has anyone experienced such trouble?

• preloading RSS contents in thunderbird, before actually reading them

  i have thunderbird 3.x, and i'm subscribed to several RSS feeds. How can I tell thunderbird to load/download any new RSS items in the background? The usual behavior with RSS feeds is that it download the headrs, or few introductory lines from the contents, but only when i'm clicking a feed item it starts loading "for real". I really want to receive the feeds and not to wait for them to load, the same way i receive emails in any email client - all messages are fully downloaded at once. there could be several reasons, BTW. - e.g. if i have short connection time, i'd rather connect, sync everything at once, and read it later. - or if i have a slow wifi connection, it's annoying to wait for each and every message, but the computer is idle while reading.. thanks

• How to remove an email which is stuck in the outbox of the Windows 8 Mail app

  It's already the second time, I have an E-Mail in the outbox of the Mail-app of Windows 8 which is stuck. I don't see the exact reason why this happens (I have no big files attached to the mails and the recipient is valid). The first time I have had this problem, I have not found a simple way to remove the stucked email. I solved the Problem by removing the accounts from the mail app and then adding the same accounts newly to the app. However I'm wondering if there is a more simple way of doing this? Does someone know how to remove an email which is stuck in the outbox?

Ability to group some windows title together, for example, I want to group titles as Stack Overflow and * - Stack Overflow together, same thing for every website and explorer windows. • Automatically Connecting to Hidden SSID WiFi Network

  My MacBook Pro will not automatically connect to a Wireless network with a hidden SSID. It makes me select the "Join Other Network..." in the Airport menu (in the system tray), where I need to input the name of the network, then security type, password and wait for it to connect. This is becoming increasingly annoying to have to do every time I come back to my desk. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5 and there doesn't seem to be an option to connect to a specific network, but rather "Preferred Networks." The only network I have set as Preferred that's in range is my home network, and it still doesn't automatically connect. Making the network publicly visible isn't under my control, so I'm stuck with what's currently in place. • How to automatically print the contents of a folder in OS X?

  I would like to be able to set up a folder on my Mac, where I could dump files and have them be automatically sent to the default printer. This way I would be able to print files at home when I'm not physically at home, using something like Dropbox. I would like to be able to write this image on HD in stead of on disk, but I have no option to browse the file system. Therefore I would like a virtual dvd disk, that is in fact a folder, but that is recognized by the app. as a real, empty dvd. I have tried MagicDisk, but it doesn't seem to offer the ability to couple an emulated disk drive to a folder...

• Workstation Build: Single 2.66ghz i-7 with overclock potential, OR Dual 5520 2.26ghz Xeons?

  There are probably better places to ask this, but I am used to the excellent quality of responses on stack overflow. I am rebuilding my desktop in a few months. Aside from normal lightweight internet usage, I use it to run sqlServer, mySql, 1-2 Ubuntu VMs from time to time, lots of IDE's, and a media server for my PS3. The two possible setups cost the exact same amount (within $50) and would both have 12gb 1333mhz ddr3 ram and a 500gb RAID-0 array (250x2). Now, If I go with a single i-7 920 2.66ghz quadcore, I can easily overclock it to 3ghz, and would have cash leftover to get a 160gb ssd (either the ocz vertex or the 120gb intel) for the main OS/Program install drive. Else, I could get a dual lga1366 motherboard with two e5520 Xeon's (2.26ghz),just use the disks I already have. So, do I go for 8 physical/16 virtual cores at 2.26ghz (No overclocking on server boards) with normal disk I/O, or a 4 physical/8 virtual cores at 3.0ghz with really outstanding disk I/O?

  I just installed openjdk6-jre on Ubuntu 10.04 java version "1.6.0_20" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.9.2) (6b20-1.9.2-0ubuntu1~10.04.1) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode) Every time I run "java" I get this error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. This can be solved by specifying a maximum heap size and running "java -Xmx256m" But is there anyway to permanently fix this error (i.e. set the default heap size to 256MB so that I do not need to specify the max heap size every time I run the command)

  I'd like to retrieve the following stats from rsnapshot files synced added files modded files deleted files Is there a feature to retrieve these in rsnapshot, or is there another product that's able to do it? EDIT: As requested, I'll try to show that I'm not just asking what I want to do without any research. I wasn't able to locate any rsnapshot feature doing this. Maybe I'm searching in a wrong direction. So, I've built a not very pretty script, called each time before rsnapshot is ran. This Perl script stores each file MD5, in order to compare backup files structures between rsnapshot updates. I'm pretty sure it's worthless to show this code here. I think that keeping an eye on what change on a server, for example, is a useful feature. So, I'm asking. @pauska Most of the time, I'm trying to search for an answer myself, which is not the case here. Thanks

  As a junior technician I've had to deal with (or will have to deal with) some problems in the past and only being a junior technicain I don't have the confidence or respect from management staff to speak up. For instance, we're having a entirely new system. From Server 2003/XP going to Sevrer 2008 R2/Win7/VMWare/Digital Signage and the current amount of time dedicated to the training of the IT support department currently stands at 0. They seem to think that all it systems are the same and are going to get a bit of shock when I can't help them. I think there;s some UK legislation saying a school/business have to put money and time aside for training, but I'm not sure. What have you had to deal with?
