• How can one domain route to an always-changing pool of servers?

  I'm sure this is an easy solution, I'm just not too familiar with how DNS works or if that's even related to this problem. If I'm running a web service on amazon ec2, distributed across many instances, how can I make it so a single domain name can be used to access the entire pool of servers, which will be changing from time to time? Since the instances may be present one second but gone the next (and vice versa), I need a way to randomly pick an active member of the cluster to route to. The updates would have to be instantaneous. Is this even possible, with dns caching and all?

• Distributed filesystem for automated offline data mirroring

  I'd like to achieve the following setup: Every time I connect my laptop to a local network, my partition gets automatically mirrored to a partition on my local server. I only want to mirror what has changed from the last time. (I understand that it is not a proper backup solution since there is no history of the changes, it'd be more like a non-persistent network RAID.) Is there a distributed file system that allows such a setup? I've done some searching and it seems to me that most distributed file-systems are focused on data availability and distribution, not duplicating them. I'd be thankful for suggestions. • How to generate good serials for DNS zones with Puppet?

  My tradition is to set all zone serials to the timestamp at modification. Now that Puppet is my new religion, I want to set serial timestamps when building zone files from exported resources. A somewhat trivialized example may look like this: file { "/tmp/dafile": content = inline_template("<%= Time.now.to_i %>"), } The problem with this approach is that content will be different all the time, which will (ultimately) provoke rebuilding of zone files on each puppet config poll. Is there some way I can insert a timestamp without it being included in the data that is compared against previous state?

• Unreliable resume from suspend?

  My desktop PC (home-built) resumes from suspend somewhat unreliably. I'd say that it resumes successfully about 85-90% of the time and hangs with a blank screen 5-10% of the time. As far as I can tell, the success or failure of the resume is completely random. I doubt it's a software problem because I triple boot Windows 7, Windows XP and Ubuntu and it's similar under all 3 operating systems. If it matters, my system is overclocked, though other than the resume-from-suspend issue, it's definitely rock stable. What are some of the obvious suspects that would cause random, sporadic failures to resume from suspend?

  I am experiencing high CPU steal percentage in a Amazon EC2 large instance. I know it means that my virtual CPU is waiting on the real CPU of the machine for time. My question is that what can I do to reduce this percentage and get maximum out of the CPU? Steal percentage is consistently at 20%. System load crosses 10 when this happens. I have checked memory and network and I am sure that they are not the bottleneck. Is that normal for such environment? • Redirect audio from laptop to desktop over LAN

  I want to be able to play a song on my laptop and have it sound through my desktop's (infinitely better) speakers. If you're familiar with Input Director: I want something that is to audio what Input Director is to mouse/keyboard. I want something that automatically redirects all audio from the laptop to the desktop in real time, and I want that solution to require, like Input Director, minimum maintenance. Beyond the initial setup, I don't want to have to babysit the program that does this. I want something that launches automatically with Windows and just works, and also allows me to cancel it whenever I want. And also doesn't go crazy when the laptop is turned on in a different network where the desktop computer isn't available. Any suggestions for such a program? (I use Windows XP on both computers.)

• Preserve the state of the start screen

  What would I need to do in order to cause the start screen to stay the way it was the last time I saw it when I go back to it? I've noticed that every time I leave the start screen it resets back to the beginning, this means that I need to scroll back to where I was to get the same view. I don't want to change the order of the applications on the start screen to accommodate this, I would much prefer it if I could find a way to make the start screen stay the way it was so I can move on from there and also if there was a way to jump to the beginning or the end of the list that would be great. I imagine I can just use the search feature to find a specific program, but that's just an extra step, almost as bad as having to scroll.

• Windows 7 - Static DHCP server address with dynamic IP Address

  Is this possible? On my LAN, I would like to setup the network properties such that the DHCP server's address is static. However, I want that server to hand out the IP Addresses and DNS addresses dynamically. The reason is that some devices on the LAN will try to behave like a DHCP server. For example, we use software to push images to computers on the LAN (our computer software configurations are centrally managed). When that imaging distribution software happens to be running, the machines being imaged will get confused as to which device is the DHCP -- the real one or the machine that is sending them the image. So, to remove the confusion, I would like to setup my Windows 7 images such that the DHCP server address is statically assigned. And then that server would assign the IP Addresses and the DNS addresses dynamically.

• Only allow root to change filesystem

  The VPS I manage uses a simple hard link rsync archive daily backup system saved to a loop file. This is great, because each backup only takes up as much space as what has changed each day, and all user/group permissions are kept. I would like to give users direct access to their home directories in each backup, but I'm worried about intentional or accidental backup data destruction, as how it stands now users can actually change, destroy or add to backed up data they originally owned. I've been looking for a way to mount this filesystem similar to an ro mount option, but something that would still allow rw access to root, but I've had absolutely no luck. In other words, I want users to be able to view and copy their backed up data without actually being able to change it, and have that data maintain the original permissions. I've got no real preferences as far as filesystem, as long as it's a standard unix filesystem that can preserve permissions, support hard links and deny write access to users without actually stripping the w permission from everything.

• Kill program after it outputs a given line, from a shell script

  Background: I am writing a test script for a piece of computational biology software. The software I am testing can take days or even weeks to run, so it has a recover functionality built in, in the case of system crashes or power failures. I am trying to figure out how to test the recovery system. Specifically, I can't figure out a way to "crash" the program in a controlled manner. I was thinking of somehow timing a SIGKILL instruction to run after some amount of time. This is probably not ideal, as the test case isn't guaranteed to run the same speed every time (it runs in a shared environment), so comparing the logs to desired output would be difficult. This software DOES print a line for each section of analysis it completes. Question: I was wondering if there was a good/elegant way (in a shell script) to capture output from a program and then kill the program when a given line/# of lines is output by the program?

• ssh rsa keys expires after 5 years

  I'm using an old login with ssh-rsa public/private key and all was good. I noticed that a couple of days ago the authorizazion was avoid with message "server refused our keys". After diggin' I figured out that the couple of keys stop working after exactly 5 years of their creation. So I make a new pair of keys, take the public one, paste inside a file in ~/.ssh of the username that I'm using, converted it with ssh-keygen -if and paste the new file into authorized_keys but the I still get "server refused our key". It's ok to copy and paste the real key without transfer it? What I'm missing? This isn't my first time using a pair of keys and I follow the same procedure as described. I'm in doubt if I'm changing the correct authorized_keys file but I've take a look in /etc/passwd and see where is the home of the login which I'm using.

• SSH Tunnel doesn't work in China

  Last year I was working in China for a few months. I never bothered setting up a real VPN, but just created a SSH tunnel, and changed my browsers proxy settings to connect through it. Everything worked great (except flash of course) but that was fine. However, now I'm back in China but I'm having problems with this approach. I do the same thing as last time, and according to https://ipcheckit.com/ my IP address is indeed the IP of my (private) server in the US, and I'm logging in to my server using a fingerprint I created long before going to China so no MITM should be possible. Furthermore the certificate from ipcheckit.com is from GeoTrust - so everything should be OK However, I still can't access sites which are blocked in China. Any idea how this could be possible?

• rsync synchronizing files only without creating folders on destination

  Is it possible with rsync to not create directories on destination? Imagine I have that source : a/ a/x.txt b/ b/y.txt And that I have this destination : a/ a/z.txt The wanted result of rsync source destination : a/ a/x.txt a/z.txt Of course my real situation involves thousand files/folders structure and I don't want solutions involving explicit list of synced folders, which I can do. I'm looking for a clean way just to prevent any folder creation on destination. By exclude or filtering... That could even be something outside rsync, like a hack with permissions if rsync can't do this... For information, this is really easy to get this kind of situations, in my case I have: A server with 2 disks, let's say A & B. And a local drive C. I usually use rsync to sync (and merge) remote A & B into local C. Then sometimes I just want to sync back some C files into A and B. (Just new Files... not non-existing folders on destination)

• How to "eject" non-existing USB drive from Windows 7 host?

  I use a USB key which is encrypted with BitLocker to store various data. I keep that key with me all the time. What happens all the time is that I send my home computer to hibernate without ejecting the USB key first. Then I unplug the key and take it with me to work. When I get home, I resume my Windows session and even though the key is not plugged in, the drive still appears as mounted on the system. I can also unmount the non-existing device with mountvol, but that only removes the drive letter. Windows will still think the device is plugged in. When I plug the key in, nothing happens. The device's class ID is listed in mountvol output, but the device is not listed in the Disk Management panel.

• How to verify if my copy operation is complete in Windows 7?

  Yesterday, I was leaving some job of copying a directory to run overnight. This morning however, I found the computer had restarted because of Windows Update or something. I was wondering if there is some way to check if the copy is complete? One way I guess would be check the last modified time of the copy, and when the system restarted. But I was wondering where to find the time when the system restarted? I was also wondering if where to find some logging files that have the records. I know Event Viewer, but don't know where to find within it. Other methods are welcome too. I also would like to hear suggestions for other ways to accomplish the copy instead of just simple copy and paste. Thanks and regards!

• Trouble running multiple Firefox versions on OS X Lion

  I am trying to use two versions of Firefox (11 and 13) on OS X Lion. I don't especially want to run two versions at the same time. I want to be able to run the version 11 when I choose the version 11 via the profile manager. The same for the version 13. Every time, I want to launch the version 11, the launcher launches the version 13... When I select the version 11 via the profile manager, Firefox 13 is launched. I created 2 automators apps (FF11.app and FF13.app) to launch Firefox : /Applications/Firefox11.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -no-remote -P FF11 & /dev/null & /Applications/Firefox13.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -no-remote -P FF13 & /dev/null & Any help would be greatly appreciated. • How to sync apps with one Mac and 3 devices?

  We have 1 Mac, with 1 iTunes account, and 3 iOS devices. Every time we sync one device, iTunes either spams it with ALL apps from ALL devices, OR it removes all of the apps from the device including all the data. Which is very annoying. Someone told me there is a way to tell iTunes to keep separate track of the devices. How can I setup iTunes such that it will not transfer all my iPhone-only apps to my iPad every time I sync? Basically I want the devices to be the "master". They give the direction which apps should be on the device, and not the other way around.

• How can I restore GRUB without a live CD?

  I realize that this is a duplicate of a question asked before, but in that question the asker managed to find his live CD and no real answer appeared, thus I am re-asking it. I managed to screw up my GRUB by deleting two linux partitions on my hard drive from windows. After this, GRUB gives the error "partition not found", and gives me the grub-rescue prompt. The only command I have found to work in this is 'ls', which spits out my partitions. I would use the live CD fix, but I am in India, and all my live CDs are back home in the US... What I've got is an internet connection, a 4GB flash drive with Flow OS installed (which I am currently using but can wipe if need be), and a working laptop that I can borrow. What should I do?

• netbook intel GMA 3150 external monitor 1920x1080 flicker problem

  Dear all, i recently purchased a acer netbook (apsire one d260). It runs flawlessly. Yesterday I bought a samsung 23" TFT with a native resolution of 1920x1080. According to the information found in the internet and my local computer dealer, the intel chipset can handle the native resolution of the monitor. However, this is only partly the case. I use the VGA cabel to connect, the monitor instantly switches to the native resolution and now the problem: Occasionaly, especially the first 2 hours after booting up, I have a flickering all over the screen, sometimes the entire screen is shaking and spinning around like crazy. I figured out, that lowering the resolution avoids the flicker but this helps only for some time. I can rule out that it's the monitor's problem since I found no issues with another notebook. Right now, I have no problems with the netbook, for about 30 minutes I didn't experience any issues... But I don't know for how long, it occurs without warning :-) I'm worried that if I would bring the netbook back to the dealer and explain my problem, after testing it on an external screen in the local shop, everything works just fine... And I won't get helped with the problem because I can't prove it. (I'm currently in Thailand and over here, customer service is nothing like back home in Germany) What can I do? Is this a driver related issue? (I installed the latest GPU driver) Is it because of the VGA cable? (But why does it work sometimes without any problems and with no issues on the other notebook) I monitored the GPU/CPU temperature, nothing changes really over time..Can it simply be a faulty GPU and is a replacement justifiable? I'm really stressed now because for the time I'm writing, the flickering didn't occur...but for sure, soon or later it will happen again.. I Forgot to mention, the problem also happens if the netbook runs on battery, unplugged. So the only hardware that is plugged is the TFT screen. ...........and here it comes again, flickering has just begun. NEED HELP! • What's the best way to work out if a virtual server is overloaded?

  I have a series of virtual servers. I'm running a command to login to each one and take a look at the load averages using uptime. What's the best way to work out if load values represent overloading? I'm running on rackspace cloud, so the servers have burst capability and can be all different sizes. I'm a little stumped on how to come up with a consistent way of figuring out when I need to spin up new servers. I can do things like estimate the jobs running on each one, but I'd like a system that runs a little closer to the real resource use available on each instance, as it obviously varies quite a bit! Help greatly appreciated!

• Is there a navigation app for iPad which re-calculate the route?

  iPad 3G successfully shows me current location, but google maps are not re-calculating the route if I did not follow exactly initially suggested by it. Normal auto navigators re-calculate on the fly. CoPilot Live HD app I see in the app store has very bad feedback. Do you know any other that are better, please? I need it with maps for the continental U.S., and being able to re-calculate depending on my real current location. I'd be OK even if it won't do that automatically, — I'd tap some button.

• Improving sound quality with remote ESD server

  Hi, I'm investigating low-budget ways to get audio from my PC (Ubuntu) to HiFi without wires. I'm currently testing a setup where Asus WL-500gP wireless router runs ESD daemon and has attached USB soundcard which is then plugged into HiFi. I'm testing playback on PC with mpg123-esd and Spotify under Wine. The sound is there, latency is unexpectedly low, but I also hear occassional clicks and some distortion from time to time. I suppose that's because of the low latency and wireless streaming of uncompressed audio--any packet drops, CPU temporarily being busy etc. will cause clicks in sound output. Is there a way around this problem, increasing latency / buffer size somehow perhaps? Streaming using shoutcast protocol seems to be a way out but I have feeling that would be a complex and brittle setup.

  i,v been searching the internet for a real noop tutorial on the subject but could not found any direct info. on how to edit these files the proper way. i,v got a debian internet server that i use to host some personal domains and runs squid and rTorrent. the server is up and running with no problems but i am confused about a few things. lets say that i named my server (foo), my domain is (example.com) and my public IP is 95.211.133.200 now: should /etc/hostname contains: tango.example.com or tango <----- just the server name should /etc/hosts contains: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 95.211.133.200 foo.example.com foo should /etc/resolf.conf contains (along with the nameservers) both: domain example.com search example.com or just the first one. are there any other files that i should edit in order to make things right? last thing, the command: domainname returns: (none) i believe it should return (example.com). what should i do to correct that?
