• Calling a MVC2 partial view using jquery returns empty string problem

  I have an issue where I have a partial view that returns some HTML to be displayed. Its called when something is clicked on the page using jquery. The problem is that no matter how I call it, i get back an empty string even though it reports success. This is happening to me using Chrome, going against my local machine. My controller looks like this: public ActionResult MyPartialView() { return PartialView(model); } I have tried jquery using .get(), .post() and .load() and all have the same results. Here is an example using .post(): $.post(url, function (data) { alert(data); }); The result always comes back as an empty string. I can navigate to the partial view in the browser manually and i get back the desired HTML. The URL I am using to call it I resolved fully so it looks like "http://localhost/controller/mypartialview" rather than using the relative path of "/controller/mypartialview" which I thought was the original problem. Any idea what may cause this?

• Moq broken? Not working with .net 4.0

  Hi guys I am receiving the following exception when trying to run my unit tests using .net 4.0 under VS2010 with moq 3.1. Attempt by security transparent method 'SPPD.Backend.DataAccess.Test.Specs_for_Core.When_using_base.Can_create_mapper()' to access security critical method 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.Assert.IsNotNull(System.Object)' failed. Assembly 'SPPD.Backend.DataAccess.Test, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' is marked with the AllowPartiallyTrustedCallersAttribute, and uses the level 2 security transparency model. Level 2 transparency causes all methods in AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers assemblies to become security transparent by default, which may be the cause of this exception. • Telerik RADGrid - linq and updating

  Hi Telerik's RADGrid, basing on their example on http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/grid/examples/dataediting/programaticlinqupdates/defaultcs.aspx Problem: I can insert and delete, however updating doesn't work. No error trapped. Data just doesn't change. From the code below it looks like Telerik Grid is doing some kung-fu behind the scenes to wire things up. I can't see the db receiving any update statements. • Partial template specialization of free functions - best practices

  As most C++ programmers should know, partial template specialization of free functions is disallowed. For example, the following is illegal C++: template <class T, int N> T mul(const T& x) { return x * N; } template <class T> T mul<T, 0>(const T& x) { return T(0); } // error: function template partial specialization ‘mul<T, 0>’ is not allowed However, partial template specialization of classes/structs is allowed, and can be exploited to mimic the functionality of partial template specialization of free functions. For example, the target objective in the last example can be achieved by using: template <class T, int N> struct mul_impl { static T fun(const T& x) { return x * N; } }; template <class T> struct mul_impl<T, 0> { static T fun(const T& x) { return T(0); } }; template <class T, int N> T mul(const T& x) { return mul_impl<T, N>::fun(x); } It's more bulky and less concise, but it gets the job done -- and as far as users of mul are concerned, they get the desired partial specialization. My questions is: when writing templated free functions (that are intended to be used by others), should you automatically delegate the implementation to a static method function of a class, so that users of your library may implement partial specializations at will, or do you just write the templated function the normal way, and live with the fact that people won't be able to specialize them?

• how does scrolling in android listview work?

  hi, i have an android-app with a listview in an activity. the listview has, if i call it so, three data states. no data loaded from inet - only one dummy item is visible, saying that data is loading data is loaded and shown in list one listitem is clicked and now shows more information for this listitem (so it is increased in its height) on every state change (1 - 2, 2 - 3) i call notifyDataSetChanged() on this ListAdapater. this causes the listview to scroll down to the last item. this is ugly in the first transition and even more ugly in the second because the clicked list item is now out of focus. as i can see, this happens with a google g1 with android 1.6. a htc touch with the same sdk acts like desired (i try to figure it out with some more devices). to avoid this i tried to read out getScrollY() and set this value back. but this returns 0. the reason for this return value i already found on stackoverflow in other qutestions. does anyone else comes along with my problem so far? why does the listview scrolls to the last item? it was mentioned, that listview does keep track on the scroll position. but it seems that it does not in my case. or may i call the wrong refresh method? is notifyDataSetChanged the correct one?

• F# Powerpack's Metadata doesn't recognize FSharp.Core as an F# library

Instead, all 3 throw an exception that FSharp.Core is not an F# assembly (details below, re-formatted for readability). Two more clues: Using the core3 method, I get the same error for the test F# assembly itself I don't get the error at FSI after doing #r "@C:\Program Files...\FSharp.Powerpack.Metadata.dll". Any ideas? I'm using Visual Studio 2008, F# 2.0 and F# Powerpack 2.0.0.0 (May 20, 2010) release on an oldish XP VM, I think it's updated to SP3 though. (I got the error this morning with Powerpack 1.9.9.9, so I upgraded to 2.0.0.0. • Advice on database design / SQL for retrieving data with chronological order

  I am creating a database that will help keep track of which employees have been on a certain training course. I would like to get some guidance on the best way to design the database. Specifically, each employee must attend the training course each year and my database needs to keep a history of all the dates on which they have attend the course in the past. The end user will use the software as a planning tool to help them book future course dates for employees. When they select a given employee they will see: (a) Last attendance date (b) Projected future attendance date(i.e. last attendance date + 1 calendar year) In terms of my database, any given employee may have multiple past course attendance dates: EmpName AttandanceDate Joe Bloggs 1st Jan 2007 Joe Bloggs 4th Jan 2008 Joe Bloggs 3rd Jan 2009 Joe Bloggs 8th Jan 2010 My question is what is the best way to set up the database to make it easy to retrieve the most recent course attendance date? In the example above, the most recent would be 8th Jan 2010. Is there a good way to use SQL to sort by date and pick the MAX date? My other idea was to add a column called ‘MostRecent’ and just set this to TRUE. EmpName AttandanceDate MostRecent Joe Bloggs 1st Jan 2007 False Joe Bloggs 4th Jan 2008 False Joe Bloggs 3rd Jan 2009 False Joe Bloggs 8th Jan 2010 True I wondered if this would simplify the SQL i.e. SELECT Joe Bloggs WHERE MostRecent = ‘TRUE’ Also, when the user updates a given employee’s attendance record (i.e. with latest attendance date) I could use SQL to: Search for the employee and set the MostRecent value to FALSE Add a new record with MostRecent set to TRUE? Would anybody recommended either method over the other? Or do you have a completely different way of solving this problem?

  Hello, I have been using pil for the first time today. And I wanted to resize an image assuming it was larger than 800x600 and also create a thumbnail. I could do either of these tasks separately but not together in one method (I am doing a custom save method in django admin). This returns a "cannot identify image file" error message. The error is on the line "image = Image.open(self.photo)" after "#if image is size is greatet than 800 x 600 then resize image." I thought this may be because the image is already open, but if i remove the line I still get issues. So I thought I could try closing after creating a thumbnail and then reopening. But I couldn't find a close method....   Hello. This may be a stupid question but im just starting to learn Rail thats why i am asking thsi question. I have one model called "User" which handles all the users in my community. Now i want to add a guestbook to every user. So i created a model called "user_guestbook" and inserted this into the new model: belongs_to :user and this into the user model: has_one :user_guestbook, :as => :guestbook The next thing i did was to add a new model to handle the posts inside the guestbook. I named it "guestbook_posts" and added this code into the new model: belongs_to :user_guestbook And this into the user_guestbook model: has_many :guestbook_posts, :as => :posts What i wanted to achive was to be able to fetch all the posts to a certain user by: @user = User.find(1) puts @user.guestbook.posts But it doesnt work for me. I dont know what i am doing wrong and if there is any easier way to do this please tell me so.   Hello, I'm on to some SQL where clause parsing and designed a working RegEx to find a column outside string literals using "Rad Software Regular Expression Desginer" which is using the .NET API. To make sure the designed RegEx works with Java too, I tested it by using the API of course (1.5 and 1.6). But guess what, it won't work. I got the message "Look-behind group does not have an obvious maximum length near index 28". The string that I'm trying to get parsed is Column_1='test''the''stuff''all''day''long' AND Column_2='000' AND TheVeryColumnIWantToFind = 'Column_1=''test''''the''''stuff''''all''''day''''long'' AND Column_2=''000'' AND TheVeryColumnIWantToFind = '' TheVeryColumnIWantToFind = '' AND (Column_3 is null or Column_3 = ''Not interesting'') AND ''1'' = ''1''' AND (Column_3 is null or Column_3 = 'Still not interesting') AND '1' = '1' As you may have guessed, I tried to create some kind of worst case to ensure the RegEx won't fail on more complicated SQL where clauses. The RegEx itself looks like this (?i:(?<!=\s*'(?:[^']|(?:''))*)((?<=\s*)TheVeryColumnIWantToFind(?=(?:\s+|=)))) I'm not sure if there is a more elegant RegEx (there'll most likely be one), but that's not important right now as it does the trick. To explain the RegEx in a few words: If it finds the column I'm after, it does a negative look-behind to figure out if the column name is used in a string literal. If so, it won't match. If not, it'll match. Back to the question. As I mentioned before, it won't work with Java. What will work and result in what I want? I found out, that Java does not seem to support unlimited look-behinds but still I couldn't get it to work. Isn't it right that a look-behind is always putting a limit up on itself from the search offset to the current search position? So it would result in something like "position - offset"?

  I have got a problem handling data which is almost well-formed XHTML document except for it has multiple DTD declarations in the beginning: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2 Final//EN"> <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2 Final//EN"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> ... </head> <body> ... </body> </html> I need load this data into XDocument object using only the first DTD and ignoring the rest declarations. It is not possible to completely ignore DTD processing because the document may have unusual characters like &acirc; or &euro; etc. The text is retrieved from external source and I have no idea why it comes like this. Obviously my naive attempt to load this document fails with System.Xml.XmlException : Cannot have multiple DTDs: var xmlReaderSettings = new XmlReaderSettings { DtdProcessing = DtdProcessing.Parse XmlResolver = new XmlPreloadedResolver(), ConformanceLevel = ConformanceLevel.Document, }; using (var xmlReader = XmlReader.Create(stream, xmlReaderSettings)) { return XDocument.Load(xmlReader); } What would be the best way to handle this kind of data?

• Self hosted WCF ServiceHost/WebServiceHost Concurrency/Peformance Design Options (.NET 3.5)

  So I'll be providing a few functions via a self hosted (in a WindowsService) WebServiceHost (not sure how to process HTTP GET/POST with ServiceHost), one of which may be called a large amount of the time. This function will also rely on a connection in the appdomain (hosted by the WindowsService so it can stay alive over multiple requests). I have the following concerns and would be oh so thankful for any input/thoughts/comments: Concurrent access - how does the WebServiceHost handle a bunch of concurrent requests. Are they queued and processes sequentially or are new instances of the contracts automagically created? WebServiceHost - WindowsService communication - I need some form of communication from the WebServiceHost to the hosting WindowsService for things like requesting a new session if one does not exist. Perhaps implementing a class which extends the WebServiceHost with events which the WindowsService subscribes to... (unless there is another way I can set off an event in the WindowsService when a request is made...) Multiple WebServiceHosts or Contracts - Would it give any real performance gain to be running multiple WebServiceHost instances in different threads (one per endpoint perhaps?) - A better understanding of the first point would probably help here. WSDL - I'm not sure why (probably just need to do more reading), but I'm not sure how to get the WebServiceHost base endpoint to respond with a WDSL document describing the available contract. Not required as all the operations will be done via GET requests which will not likely change, but it would be nice to have... That's about it for the moment ;) I've been reading a lot on WCF and wish I'd gotten into it long ago, but definitely still learning.

  I created a database with aspnet_regsql, the database was created in sql sever 2008 and not in data folder in my project (do I need to move it to the folder manually?). Next, in Web Site Administration Tool I went to provider section and clicked don Test button. I got an error: Could not establish a connection to the database. If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider. Maybe I need to set something in a web.config, like membership settings or connection strings (or ASP.NET Website Administrator Tool should create those settings for me)? Update: Maybe it happens because I am using SQL server 2008 full and not express? Update 2: After setting membership section and connection string to my aspnetdb database in Web Site Administration Tool I've opened security-Security Setup Wizard-Define Roles (stage 4) I got this error: An error was encountered. • JQuery BlockUI with UpdatePanel Viewstate Issue

  I am using BlockUI to show a modal. Within the blocked modal I have an update panel. Within the update panel I have a textbox and a button that submits the content back to the server. Everything works fine up to this point (the blockUI is called, the modal appears, and the button performs the postback). However, when the button's click event is fired the value for the textbox is consistently empty even if text was entered. When the update panel updates the textbox shows up blank.   Hi, I am updating Documents on Sharepoint using List.asmx web service. But problem i am facing is: Fields are not getting Updated as some of required fields are not added. But to fill required fields i have to again Update. "ID" field is compulsary at the time of Update. • Using git subtree to clone a subdirectory of a project with versioning history then merge it back af

  I am a graduate student with many scripts, bibliography data in bibtex, thesis draft in latex, presentations in open office, posters in scribus, and figures and result data. I would like to put everything in one project under version control. Then when I need to work on a portion such as the bibliography data, I would like to check that subdirectory out, modify it as necessary and merge it back.I would like the ability to check out one version to my home computer, and a different one to my work computer and make changes to each independently and eventually merge them back. I would also like to be able to check out a piece of code from this big project and import it with versioning into a separate project. If I may changes I'd like to be able to merge them back to the original project. • Android: trouble updating to Android SDK Tools, revision 7.

  Currently I have Android SDK 2.1 (+ tools revision 4). I'd like to upgrade to Android SDK 2.2. When I try to do it I'm informed I need to upgrade Android SDK Tools to revision 7 first. So I agree, the process starts and then I get an error: -= warning! =- A folder failed to be renamed or moved. On Windows this typically means that a program Is using that Folder (for example Windows Explorer or your anti-virus software.) Please momentarily deactivate your anti-virus software. Please also close any running programs that may be accessing the directory 'D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\too!s'. When ready, press YES to try again. Downloading Android SDK Tools, revision 7 Installing Android SDK Tools, revision 7 Failed to rename directory D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools to D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\temp\ToolPackage.old01. I am aware of http/https and antivirus issues. So I disactivated my AV. I also closed any application that might hold a handle to the folder. Eclipse is also closed (I start the manager via command line). However I still get the same error. Looks like the only app that can hold a handle to the folder is the manager itself, because its starting directory is the one the error complains about ('\tools'). I am on Win XP Pro + SP3. Does anyone have an idea?

  I'm trying to create a custom action for my Wix install, and it's just not working, and I'm unsure why. • Ivar definitions show 'long' type encoding as 'long long' type encoding

  I've found what I think may be a bug with Ivar and Objective-C runtime. I'm using XCode 3.2.1 and associated libraries, developing a 64 bit app on X86_64 (MacBook Pro). Where I would expect the type encoding for the following "longVal" to be 'l', the Ivar encoding is showing a 'q' (which is a 'long long'). Anyone else seeing this? • WiX 3: Using heat.exe to add bulk files to a new WiX project: HEAT5150

  If this is a repeat question, please direct me to the existing solution. I wasn't able to find a matching query. We currently use InstallShield. I'm attempting to covert a project with 407 files to a WiX3 installation package. I tried using heat.exe to do some of the automation but I get the following warning for almost every file: c: heat dir "c:\projectDir\projectA" -gg -ke -template:Product -out "c:\install\projectA\heatOutput" heat.exe: warning HEAT5150 : Could not harvest data from a file that was expected to be a SelfReg DLL: c:\projectDir\projectA\plugin1.dll. If this file does not support SelfReg you can ignore this warning. Otherwise, this error detail may be helpful to diagnose the failure: Unable to load file: c:\projectDir\projectA\plugin1.dll, error: 126. Q: Is it normal for this warning to be reported for every file? If there's a current "How To create/convert to your first WiX install project with many files" tutorial, please point me to it. The key requirement is "with many files". Thank-you -Karen Kwong- PS. I know that WiX is designed for incremental install project creation but it would be nice to know if there's an automated way to convert existing install projects.

• Getting fields_for and accepts_nested_attributes_for to work with a belongs_to relationship

  I cannot seem to get a nested form to generate in a rails view for a belongs_to relationship using the new accepts_nested_attributes_for facility of Rails 2.3. I did check out many of the resources available and it looks like my code should be working, but fields_for explodes on me, and I suspect that it has something to do with how I have the nested models configured. The error I hit is a common one that can have many causes: '@account[owner]' is not allowed as an instance variable name Here are the two models involved: class Account < ActiveRecord::Base # Relationships belongs_to :owner, :class_name => 'User', :foreign_key => 'owner_id' accepts_nested_attributes_for :owner has_many :users end class User < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :account end Perhaps this is where I am doing it 'rong', as an Account can have an 'owner', and may 'users', but a user only has one 'account', based on the user model account_id key. This is the view code in new.html.haml that blows up on me: - form_for :account, :url => account_path do |account| = account.text_field :name - account.fields_for :owner do |owner| = owner.text_field :name And this is the controller code for the new action: class AccountsController < ApplicationController # GET /account/new def new @account = Account.new end end When I try to load /account/new I get the following exception: NameError in Accounts#new Showing app/views/accounts/new.html.haml where line #63 raised: @account[owner] is not allowed as an instance variable name If I try to use the mysterious 'build' method, it just bombs out in the controller, perhaps because build is just for multi-record relationships: class AccountsController < ApplicationController # GET /account/new def new @account = Account.new @account.owner.build end end You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! The error occurred while evaluating nil.build If I try to set this up using @account.owner_attributes = {} in the controller, or @account.owner = User.new, I'm back to the original error, "@account[owner] is not allowed as an instance variable name". Does anybody else have the new accepts_nested_attributes_for method working with a belongs_to relationship? Is there something special or different you have to do? All the official examples and sample code (like the great stuff over at Ryans Scraps) is concerned with multi-record associations.
