• Is your TRY worth catching?

    A very useful error handling TRY/CATCH construct is widely used to catch all execution errors  that do not close the database connection. The biggest downside is that in the case of multiple errors the TRY/CATCH mechanism will only catch the last error. An example of this can be seen during a standard restore operation. In this example I attempt to perform a restore from a file that no longer exists. Two errors are being fired: 3201 and 3013: Assuming that we are using the TRY and CATCH construct, the ERROR_MESSAGE() function will catch the last message only: To workaround this problem you can prepare a temporary table that will receive the statement output. Execute the statement inside the xp_cmdshell stored procedure, connect back to the SQL Server using the command line utility sqlcmd and redirect it's output into the previously created temp table.  After receiving the output, you will need to parse it to understand whether the statement has finished successfully or failed. It’s quite easy to accomplish as long as you know which statement was executed. In the case of generic executions you can query the output table and search for words like“Msg%Level%State%” that are usually a part of the error message.Furthermore, you don’t need TRY/CATCH in the above workaround, since the xp_cmdshell procedure always finishes successfully and you can decide whether to fire the RAISERROR statement or not. Yours, Maria

• Nginx routing script for NodeJS and Wordpress

  We are moving blogs and site from wordpress to nodejs and ready to move into production. However I'm not able to figure it out how to implement routing from front server (Nginx) to NodeJS (prefered web instance) and if data not synced yet into NodeJS website than (404 will throw by NodeJS) fall back to (using reverse proxy) to Wordpress and serve page, during the transformation period. Q1. Is the approach good for the scenario, or anyone can suggest better approach? Q2. Should NodeJS treat itself as Reverse proxy (using bouncy : https://github.com/substack/bouncy or similar package) in event of fall back or shoud stick with Nginx to do so using fastcgi approch. Both NodeJS and Wordpress are on single server only, In first scenario, /if resource available than serve directly User -> Nginx -> NodeJS (8080) \if resource not available then reverse query wordpress and serve content second scenario, /if resource available than serve directly User -> Nginx -> NodeJS (8080) \if resource not available then 404 to Nginx and Nginx script fallback to Wordpress (FastCGI PHP) Later we have plan to phase out Wordpress and PHP from the server environment completely. I'd like to see any examples of Nginx or Varnish scripts and/or NodeJS scripts if you have for me to refer. Thanks.

• SharePoint Server Farm, what to do with an old server?

  Hi there, so we've procured a monster of a SQL Cluster and 4 screaming fast machines running the apps/WFE to start up our MOSS 2007 Enterprise Server farm, however I've got one server from the old server farm configuration that was just re-imaged and is still running decently, it's a 32 bit machine where the others are 64 bit machines so it really can't serve the same role as a 64 bit machine. I'd like to see if there's a role for it somewhere in the farm, a few thoughts: --Dedicated Search Query Server --Dedicated Excel Services Has anyone out there been in a similar situation? What did they do?

• Should mock objects for tests be created at a high or low level

  When creating unit tests for those other objects, what is the best way to create mock objects that provide data to other objects. Should they be created at a 'high level' and intercept the calls as soon as possible, or should they be done at a 'low level' and so make as much as the real code still be called? e.g. I'm writing a test for some code that requires a NoteMapper object that allows Notes to be loaded from the DB. class NoteMapper { function getNote($sqlQueryFactory, $noteID) { // Create an SQL query from $sqlQueryFactory // Run that SQL // if null // return null // else // return new Note($dataFromSQLQuery) } } I could either mock this object at a high level by creating a mock NoteMapper object, so that there are no calls to the SQL at all e.g. class MockNoteMapper { function getNote($sqlQueryFactory, $noteID) { //$mockData = {'Test Note title', "Test note text" } // return new Note($mockData); } } Or I could do it at a very low level, by creating a MockSQLQueryFactory that instead of actually querying the database just provides mock data back, and passing that to the current NoteMapper object. It seems that creating mocks at a high level would be easier in the short term, but that in the long term doing it at a low level would be more powerful and possibly allow more automation of tests e.g. by recording data in an out of a DB and then replaying that data for tests. Is there a recommended way of creating mocks? Are there any hard and fast rules about which are better, or should they both be used where appropriate?

• Suggestions for getting an open source electron beam tracking code going

  I work in the field of accelerator physics and synchrotron radiation. High energy electrons circulating in large rings of magnets produce x-rays that are used for a variety of different kinds of science. Running and improving these facilities requires controlling and modelling the electron beam as it circulates in the ring. A code to model this basically requires trackers to follow the electrons through the elements (something called a symplectic integrator), and then the computation of different parameters associated with this motion. The problem with these codes is that every facility has there own. In principle the code is not so complex. And as a modelling project, one might think it has some general interest. Who doesn't want to be able to create a track in space out of magnets and watch the electrons circulate? There is a Matlab based code to do this called Accelerator Toolbox, but the creator of the code is no longer in the field. I put the code in Sourceforge under the name atcollab. The basic resource is in C- it is the set of symplectic integrators. These are available in the atcollab code here. It has been useful to put the code on Sourceforge in order to exchange code, but the community of users is quite small and most are too busy to put that much time into collaboration. So in terms of really improving the code, I don't think it has been so successful. Any piece of this picture could be recreated without that much difficulty, but overall it is a bit complex, and because each lab has their own installation with lots of add-on Matlab code, people find it hard to really work together and share code. Somehow I think we need to involve a wider community in our development, or just use some standard tools. But for that, I suppose it needs to be of some general interest. I think symplectic integrators may have some general interest. And the part about a plug-in architecture to build up the ring ought to fit other patterns. Or the other option is to just accept that this is not a problem of general interest, and work harder within our small community. Suggestions, or anecdotes of analogous experience would be appreciated.

• Common request: export #Tabular model and data to #PowerPivot

  I received this request in many courses, messages and also forum discussions: having an Analysis Services Tabular model, it would be nice being able to extract a correspondent PowerPivot data model. In order of priority, here are the specific feature people (including me) would like to see: Create an empty PowerPivot workbook with the same data model of a Tabular model Change the connections of the tables in the PowerPivot workbook extracting data from the Tabular data model Every table should have an EVALUATE ‘TableName’ query in DAX Apply a filter to data extracted from every table For example, you might want to extract all data for a single country or year or customer group Using the same technique of applying filter used for role based security would be nice Expose an API to automate the process of creating a PowerPivot workbook Use case: prepare one workbook for every employee containing only its data, that he can use offline Common request for salespeople who want a mini-BI tool to use in front of the customer/lead/supplier, regardless of a connection available This feature would increase the adoption of PowerPivot and Tabular (and, therefore, Business Intelligence licenses instead of Standard), and would probably raise the sales of Office 2013 / Office 365 driven by ISV, who are the companies who requests this feature more. If Microsoft would do this, it would be acceptable it only works on Office 2013. But if a third-party will do that, it will make sense (for their revenues) to cover both Excel 2010 and Excel 2013. Another important reason for this feature is that the “Offline cube” feature that you have in Excel is not available when your PivotTable is connected to a Tabular model, but it can only be used when you connect to Analysis Services Multidimensional. • Can a Windows 2003 Active Directory server act as a NTP server?

  Within our LAN, there are two Windows 2003 servers with the Active Directory role. Both these servers have the time service configured to query NTP servers on the internet for the accurate time. That works fine. I've just installed XenServer v5.6 and it's asked me for the IP address of an NTP server. Without tweaking the firewall, I cannot configure this server to reference an internet based NTP server. But can I configure it to use the IP address of the internal AD servers, i.e. do AD servers also act as NTP servers to other computers? Thanks, Rob.

I am beyond frustrated/baffled.

• Developing for 2005 using VS2008!

  I joined a fairly large project recently and it has a particularity… Once finished, everything has to be sent to the client under VS2005 using VB.Net and can target either framework 2.0 or 3.0… A long time ago, the decision to use VS2008 and to target framework 3.0 was taken but people knew they would need to establish a few rules to ensure that each dev would use VS2008 as if it was VS2005… Why is that so? Well simply because the compiler in VS2005 is different from the compiler inside VS2008…  I thought it might be a good idea to note the things that you cannot use in VS2008 if you plan on going back to VS2005. Who knows, this might save someone the headache of going over all their code to fix errors… -        Do not use LinQ keywords (from, in, select, orderby…).   -        Do not use LinQ standard operators under the form of extension methods.   -        Do not use type inference (in VB.Net you can switch it OFF in each project properties). o   This means you cannot use XML Literals.   -        Do not use nullable types under the following declarative form:    Dim myInt as Integer? But using:   Dim myInt as Nullable(Of Integer)     is perfectly fine.   -        Do not test nullable types with     Is Nothing    use    myInt.HasValue     instead.   -        Do not use Lambda expressions (there is no Lambda statements in VB9) so you cannot use the keyword “Function”.   -        Pay attention not to use relaxed delegates because this one is easy to miss in VS2008   -        Do not use Object Initializers   -        Do not use the “ternary If operator” … not the IIf method but this one     If(confition, truepart, falsepart).   As a side note, I talked about not using LinQ keyword nor the extension methods but, this doesn’t mean not to use LinQ in this scenario. LinQ is perfectly accessible from inside VS2005. All you need to do is reference System.Core, use namespace System.Linq and use class “Enumerable” as a helper class… This is one of the many classes containing various methods that VS2008 sees as extensions. The trick is you can use them too! Simply remember that the first parameter of the method is the object you want to query on and then pass in the other parameters needed… That’s pretty much all I see but I could have missed a few… If you know other things that are specific to the VS2008 compiler and which do not work under VS2005, feel free to leave a comment and I’ll modify my list accordingly (and notify our team here…) ! • Difference between two kinds of Bing URL Referers

  Most of the referral URLS that I get from Bing have the following syntax: http://www.bing.com/search?q=keywords+keywords&[some other variables] However I just noticed that maybe 10-20% of them are coming in like this: http://www.bing.com/url?source=search&[some other variables]&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.example.com/user-landing-page-on-my-site&yrktarget=_top&q=keywords+keywords&[some other variables] The first syntax gives me the keywords the user typed in, but the second actually gives me the keywords the user typed in and their landing page on my site. I was originally unaware of this second kind altogether because I have a customized referral report that filters out URLs containing my domain. But now that I noticed them I want to know why they occur to see if I can get more to occur this way because the second syntax contains more valuable information. If I go to one of the first URLs, it gives me a typical Bing query page. The second URLs seem to just redirect me to the Bing home page. I'm not sure if it has to do with the kind of search being performed (I also get a few http://www.bing.com/shopping/search?q= referers) or some other metric. Does anyone know what causes some referral URLs from Bing to have the /search?q syntax and others to have the /url?source syntax? P.S. I have verified that I am getting both kinds of URLs from non-advertising clicks. P.P.S. I am not talking about data in Google Analytics or similar software but the raw $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'] value coming from the client's original request.

• How should I deal with user agent parsing in logs?

  My web app project includes logging functionality so we can see where visitors are coming from (referrer URL), what the popular user agents are, what pages are most popular, etc. The log is stored in SQL Server, and when I query the user agents I use a large (almost 100 lines) and growing CASE statement to separate the user agents using string matching (i.e. if the user agent contains the string "Firefox/9" then it's Firefox 9). Is there a better way to do this so I don't have to continually add to that CASE statement to deal with new browser releases? Also, how should I deal with less common, weird/unknown user agents? I've seen the following in the logs and been unable to find good information online about what they are: WordPress/3.3.1; http://www.facecolony.org Mozilla/4.0 ( http://www.hairirons.org redips; <a href=http://hairirons.org/>chi hair iron</a>) I'd guess they're bots/crawlers, but the sites they point to don't appear to reference web crawlers (or even be available sometimes). I've seen other user agents aren't familiar to me, but I know they're bots because they include "bot" or "spider" or something similar in them.

  One of the nice things about SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is that you can highlight a table name in a script and press Alt + F1 to perform sp_help on it. Unfortunately I've never been able to use that feature as the majority of the tables in our product belong to a schema other than dbo.    On a long train journey back to York I wondered if I could solve this problem by writing my own replacement for sp_help (which I’ve called sp_help_table_schemas).  My version works by first checking the system tables to find out which schemas the table belongs to SELECT s.Name   --Find the schema FROM sys.schemas s  JOIN sys.tables t on t.schema_id = s.schema_id  WHERE t.name = 'Orders'It then dynamically calls the standard sp_help method but this time supplying the table owner as well.SET @cmd = 'EXEC sp_help ''' + QUOTENAME(@SchemaName) + '.' + QUOTENAME(@ObjectName) + ''' ;' ;           EXEC ( @cmd )Once I had proved the basics worked I wrapped it up into a stored procedure and deployed it to the master database on my laptop.  It was then just a question of going into Tools à Options within SSMS and defining the keyboard short cutA couple of notes You can’t amend the existing Alt+F1 entry to I went with Ctrl+F1.  You need to open new query window for the change to be picked upSo I can now highlight a table name and press Ctrl+F1 The completed script is attached.   Thanks go to Martin Bell who reviewed my stored procedure and give some valuable advice.

I was not getting the expected results. I did some googlng and didn’t find a solution, but I did run across a reference to SYSDATE. I tried SYSDATE in my queries and got the expected results. I did a TO_CHAR on the two date fields and found they returned different times. CURRENT_DATE returned the time from my laptop which was  in the EDT time zone. SYSDATE returned the time from the database server which happened to be in the PDT time zone. I guess if both the database server and my laptop were in the same time zone I would not have seen any problem. Here is the query I ran to display the two fields. select to_char(current_date,'DD-MON-YY HH:MI:SS'), to_char(sysdate,'DD-MON-YY HH:MI:SS') from dual; As you can see from the screen shot from SQL Developer they definitely returned different times. I’m sure there is some command or setting you can use to prevent this problem, but for me the take away is to use SYSDATE in your queries when you want to do any date comparison.

• Computer to Tv cable question

  Hi all. Heres my query : I have a PC with all the usual outputs and a couple of TVs in the house with inputs to connect to a computer. Now, what i would like to do is get rid of cable TV and using the input into the spliters in the basement,( ie. where the input cable from outside actually feeds the system ) have the computer become the "Cable supplier" ( so to speak ) and have the output ( via some sort of box ) from the computer, convert what is on my monitor into an RF signal that is then fed into the cables in my house and ultimately to each TV / room . I don't know if there is such an item but would welcome any thoughts you might have on such a set up. I am not into HD or the like, so the picture quality needs only to be watchable, not HD. I don't want to have to set up seperate cables to feed the audio on each TV. Thanks in advance!

It turns out this modsec rule is getting triggered: Access denied with code 403 (phase 2). Pattern match "(?:ogg|gopher|zlib|(?:ht|f)tps?)\:/" at ARGS:gltr_redir. [file "/opt/mod_security/10_asl_rules.conf"] [line "827"] [id "340153"] [rev "22"] [msg "Generic PHP code injection protection via ARGS 3"] [severity "CRITICAL"] I would assume ARGS refers to GET/POST data, but there's no gltr_redir in the query string. And, being a GET request, there's obviously no POST data. So how is this rule being triggered?

• Unauthorized response from Server with API upload

  I'm writing a library in C# to help me develop a Windows application. The library uses the Ubuntu One API. I am able to authenticate and can even make requests to get the Quota (access to Account Admin API) and Volumes (so I know I have access to the Files API at least) Here's what I have as my Upload code: public static void UploadFile(string filename, string filepath) { FileStream file = File.OpenRead(filepath); byte[] bytes = new byte[file.Length]; file.Read(bytes, 0, (int)file.Length); RestClient client = UbuntuOneClients.FilesClient(); RestRequest request = UbuntuOneRequests.BaseRequest(Method.PUT); request.Resource = "/content/~/Ubuntu One/" + filename; request.AddHeader("Content-Length", bytes.Length.ToString()); request.AddParameter("body", bytes, ParameterType.RequestBody); client.ExecuteAsync(request, webResponse => UploadComplete(webResponse)); } Every time I send the request I get an "Unauthorized" response from the server. For now the "/content/~/Ubuntu One/" is hardcoded, but I checked and it is the location of my root volume. Is there anything that I'm missing? UbuntuOneClients.FilesClient() starts the url with "https://files.one.ubuntu.com" UbuntuOneRequests.BaseRequest(Method.{}) is the same requests that I use to send my Quota and Volumes requests, basically just provides all of the parameters needed to authenticate. • How do I install Postgres Graphical Installer?

  I am a newbie in using Ubuntu (more precisely never used linux except the production deployment ). Now I choose to hold a grip on the system and intalled a latest 11.10 Ubuntu in my 32 bit Intel** desktop. In this machine **I have a 'administrator' user 'tusar'. I want to install the PostgreSQL graphical version so downloaded this file postgresql-8.4.9-1-linux.bin from here Now If run the file with ./filename command (refuses if I am not root), it opens up the graphical interface and completes the installation (creates user postgres and ask for password, wont complete if I dont give valid password). I checked with /etc/inint.d/postgresql-8.4 status , that postgres is running. But the problem is I am unable to open the GUI (I installed it in /opt/Postgresql ), its telling permission denied even if I am logged in as 'tusar'. Then I tried using the su postgres command and it directly changed the user without password. Now if I run the psql , createdb , its prompting me to install the postgres-client-package but this utilies are already installed and I can view them in my /opt/Postgresql/8.4/bin folder. I can run query through my JDBC utility programs but unable to use neither terminal nor the graphical interface (although I can see pgAdmin3 is there ). Urgent help needed. I have used this guide for the installation.

• Have you used nDepend?

  Have you Used NDepend? I have often wanted to use it, but never spent the money on it.   I have developed many tools that try to do pieces of what NDepend does, but never with as much success as they reach. Put simply, it is a tool that will allow you to udnerstand and monitor the architecture of your software, and it does it in some pretty amazing ways. One of the most impressive features is something that they call Code Query Language.   It allows you to write queries very similar to SQL to track the performance of various software metrics and use this to identify areas that are out of compliance with your standards and architecture. For instance, once you have analyzed your project, you can write queries such as : SELECT METHODS WHERE IsPublic AND CouldBePrivate  You can also set up such queries to provide warnings if there are records returned.    You can incorporae this into your daily build and compare build against build. There are over 82 metrics included to allow you to view your code in a variety of angles. I have often advocated for a "Code Inventory" database to track the state of software and the ROI on software investments.    This tool alone will take you about 90% of the way there. If you are not using it yet,  I strongly recommend that you do!
