• Pathfinding and BSP with Box2D

  I'm looking into implementing AI in my 2D side-scrolling platformer, and I'm looking into using algorithms such as A*. For many kinds of pathfinding, we need some sort of grid or systems of nodes or polygon areas. My problem is that I am using Box2d for physics and I am not sure how best to create a structure that my AI can use besides placing individual nodes manually (something I really want to avoid) and using some sort of steering behavior. My level design is tile-based with each tile being about half of the height/width of my main character. The tiles are not all square (some are sloped). I'd like to have a system that can see what the terrain looks like for pathfinding and also keep track of the positions of other actors such as enemies. I'd like to avoid directly placing any nodes into my level design except for possible endpoints or goals. This question is related: How do you do AI path following within a 2d physics engine like farseer/box2d?, but it doesn't specify what kind of structure I could use instead of a list of nodes. I'm looking for some kind of grid or type of BSP that I can query for algorithms like A*.

• Is ODBC on Windows 2003 slower than on Windows 7?

  I am seeing some MSSQL 2005 performance issues, and I am trying to diagnose the cause. I am using SQL profiler to gather query execution times. Both the client (using ODBC), and the SQL server are running on Windows 2003. I am also using Windows 7 (client) with a different Windows 2003 server to compare results. Windows 7 client / Windows 2003 server: SQL management studio: 393ms Through ODBC: 215ms Windows 2003 client: SQL management studio: approx 155ms Through ODBC: 3145ms ... in both cases, I'm running SQL management studio on the client. To me, these figures suggest there's something wrong with the ODBC client on the Windows 2003 server. On Windows, I see that the ODBC "SQL Server" driver is version 6.01.7600.16385 but on Windows 2003, it is 2000.86.3959.00 (by default). Could this be the problem? Is it possible to update an ODBC driver?

  I just started another website and it has taken me 30mins to copy/paste my other website and delete stuff because I don't have a template. Theres lots of features I copied over that I haven't seen in libraries/templates. But I don't really know any libraries/templates. This site is ASP.NET. Some things I have is a string.format that escapes strings for HTML (so <hi> is text instead of a tag). Other features are adding or removing items in the url query, a class to pass in a ASP.NET error and log or convert it into a row in a db (I know about elmah but during development on my last site it wasn't Mono compatible), a mini AJAX library for success/fail/redirect/etc, a class to pass in a ASP.NET error and log or convert it into a row in a db and anything else I would use in every site. I don't like my (library) design because I wasn't expecting to do more then 2-3 websites and I am on my 5th. I don't know proper ASP.NET either so what is an article that explains how to make a great library/template for websites?

• Stackify Gives Devs a Crack at the Production Server

Why hasn’t anyone thought of that before?” Matt Watson, CEO of Kansas City, Mo.-based startup Stackify, was telling me that the 10-person company is getting ready to launch its product in August (it’s in beta now) that will give developers an app-centric look into production servers so they can support and troubleshoot apps and fix bugs. Of course, this hasn’t happened in the past because of the security concerns of IT administrators, and a decided lack of expertise on the part of developers. Stackify installs on a server and acts like a proxy for developers, collecting data about the environment, discovering all the applications, scanning for config file changes, and doing server monitoring. “We become the central point that developers can see everything they need to know about their applications,” he said. “Developers can look at the files that are deployed, and query databases in a safe way.”  In his words:“The big thing we’re hoping is just giving them (developers) visibility. Most companies want to hire the junior developers that they pay $50,000 a year right out of college to do application support and troubleshooting and fix bugs, but those people don’t have access to production servers to troubleshoot. It becomes very difficult for them to do their job, so they end up spending all of their day bugging the senior developers, the managers or the system administrators to track down this stuff, which creates a huge bottleneck. And so what we can do is give that visibility to those lower-level people so that they can do this work and free up the higher-level people so they can be working on the next big thing.”Stackify itself might just prove to be the next big thing.

• MySQL Stored Procedure Parameters are NULL

  I am stumped, and was hoping someone here would have a quick and easy answer. I did a fresh install of MySQL 5.5 and am trying to pass parameters into a stored procedure. The parameter values aren't being read by the stored procedure. MySQL doesn't throw an error and processes the code with null parameters. Here is the code: DELIMITER $$ CREATE DEFINER=`root`@`%` PROCEDURE `testing`(IN parameter INTEGER) BEGIN UPDATE table_name SET valueToChange = 'Test' WHERE mainID = @parameter; END And here is the query I'm using to call it: USE database_name; CALL testing(72); Can anyone help?

• How can I move a load of zone records from a web based system to text based one?

  Hi there, I have a few domains with Dreamhost where I have set a load of records using their web based domain name system, and I've like to move them to another provider that lets me enter info directly as a text file for their name server, bind 9 to use. (If you're interested, I'm moving them to Gandi.net). Previously when I used a cpanel based system to do something similar, there was a tool that let me simply enter a domain name, and any available domains were automagically entered into a system, saving me typing it myself (and bringing down sites with silly typos in the process). What open source tool can I use to query a domain for all the relevant subdomains and records and list them in a format like a zone file, that I can use with other name servers?

• Why do SNMP agents need MIB files?

  After reading up on SNMP and some of the questions help here I think understand the agent role as a SNMP service to device (Like SQL, it is an API to storage). When you execute a SQL query the SQL engine does all the work and returns the result - You don't need to be aware of how the storage and where the storage is done. But MIBs are not actual storage , so what is the role of my agent? if the agent only register the MIB like i follow in this tutorial, is it not used as handler at all? Say that I want monitor my application's pending request queue, so I want an agent that all SNMP request for application_pending_request will be fired for it and it will return the queue depth. Why do I need to have an actual MIB when all I need to poll my application queue in order to get result?

• Accessing SQL Server in Windows XP Mode Virtual Pc

  I have a laptop running 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate. I created a Virtual PC using Microsoft XP Mode. I've installed SQL Server 2000 on the Virtual Machine. I have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the Windows 7 machine (laptop). I can browse to the SQL 2000 instance (it sees it), but I cannot successfully connect using either Windows or SQL Server Authentication. I don't get an error, the attempt just times out. I have the Windows XP Mode Firewall turned off, and there doesn't appear to be anything in the Event logs either. Any ideas how I can query the XP Mode SQL Server from the Windows 7 machine?

• Visual Studio Extensions

In fact, it’s been 18 years since the first Visual Studio product was launched. In that time, there have been some major changes but perhaps the most important (or at least influential) changes for the course of the product have been in the last few years. While we can argue over what was and wasn’t an important change or what has and hasn’t changed, I want to talk about what I think is the single most important change Microsoft has made to Visual Studio. Specifically, I’m referring to the Visual Studio Gallery (first introduced in Visual Studio 2010) and the ability for third-parties to easily write extensions which can add new functionality to Visual Studio or even change existing functionality. I know Visual Studio had this ability before the Gallery existed, but it was expensive (both from a financial and development resource) perspective for a company or individual to write such an extension. The Visual Studio Gallery changed all of that. As of today, there are over 4000 items in the Gallery. Microsoft itself has over 100 items in the Gallery and more are added all of the time. Why is this such an important feature? Simply put, it allows third-parties (companies such as JetBrains, Telerik, Red Gate, Devart, and DevExpress, just to name a few) to provide enhanced developer productivity experiences directly within the product by providing new functionality or changing existing functionality. However, there is an even more important function that it serves. It also allows Microsoft to do the same. By providing extensions which add new functionality or change existing functionality, Microsoft is not only able to rapidly innovate on new features and changes but to also get those changes into the hands of developers world-wide for feedback. The end result is that these extensions become very robust and often end up becoming part of a later product release. An excellent example of this is the new CodeLens feature of Visual Studio 2013. This is, perhaps, the single most important developer productivity enhancement released in the last decade and already has huge potential. As you can see, out of the box CodeLens supports showing you information about references, unit tests and TFS history.   Fortunately, CodeLens is also accessible to Visual Studio extensions, and Microsoft DevLabs has already written such an extension to show code “health.” This extension shows different code metrics to help make sure your code is maintainable. At this point, you may have already asked yourself, “With over 4000 extensions, how do I find ones that are good?” That’s a really good question. Fortunately, the Visual Studio Gallery has a ratings system in place, which definitely helps but that’s still a lot of extensions to look through. To that end, here is my personal list of favorite extensions. This is something I started back when Visual Studio 2010 was first released, but so much has changed since then that I thought it would be good to provide an updated list for Visual Studio 2013. These are extensions that I have installed and use on a regular basis as a developer that I find indispensible. This list is in no particular order. NuGet Package Manager for Visual Studio 2013 Microsoft CodeLens Code Health Indicator Visual Studio Spell Checker Indent Guides Web Essentials 2013 VSCommands for Visual Studio 2013 Productivity Power Tools (right now this is only for Visual Studio 2012, but it should be updated to support Visual Studio 2013.) • From DBA to Data Analyst

  Cross posted from the PASS Blog There is a lot changing in the data professional’s world these days. More data is being produced and stored. More enterprises are trying to use that data to improve their products and services and understand their customers better. More data platforms and tools seem to be crowding the market. For a traditional DBA this can be a confusing and perhaps unsettling time. It’s also a time that offers great opportunity for career growth. I speak from personal experience. We sometimes refer to the “accidental DBA”, the person who finds herself suddenly responsible for managing the database because she has some other technical skills. While it was not accidental, six months ago I was unexpectedly offered a chance to transition out of my DBA role and become a data analyst. I have since come to view this offer as a gift, though at the time I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. Throughout my DBA career I’ve gotten support from my PASS friends and colleagues and they were the first ones I turned to for counsel about this new situation. Everyone was encouraging and I received two pieces of valuable advice: first, leverage what I already know about data and second, work to understand the business’ needs. Bringing the power of data to bear to solve business problems is really the heart of the job. The challenge is figuring out how to do that. PASS had been the source of much of my technical training as a DBA, so I naturally started there to begin my Business Intelligence education. Once again the Virtual Chapter webinars, local chapter meetings and SQL Saturdays have been invaluable. I work in a large company where we are fortunate to have some very talented data scientists and analysts. These colleagues have been generous with their time and advice. I also took a statistics class through Coursera where I got a refresher in statistics and an introduction to the R programming language. And that’s not the end of the free resources available to someone wanting to acquire new skills. There are many knowledgeable Business Intelligence and Analytics professionals who teach through their blogs. Every day I can learn something new from one of these experts. Sometimes we plan our next career move and sometimes it just happens. Either way a database professional who follows industry developments and acquires new skills will be better prepared when change comes. Take the opportunity to learn something about the changing data landscape and attend a Business Intelligence, Business Analytics or Big Data Virtual Chapter meeting. And if you are moving into this new world of data consider attending the PASS Business Analytics Conference in April where you can meet and learn from those who are already on that road. It’s been said that “the only thing constant is change.” That’s never been more true for the data professional than it is today. But if you are someone who loves data and grasps its potential you are in the right place at the right time.

• Azure Mobile Services: lessons learned

  When I first started using Azure Mobile Services I thought of it as a nice way to: authenticate my users - login using Twitter, Google, Facebook, Windows Live create tables, and use the client code to create the columns in the table because that is not possible in the Azure Mobile Services UI run some Javascript code on the table crud actions (Insert, Update, Delete, Read) schedule a Javascript to run any 15 or more minutes I had no idea of the magic that was happening inside… where is the data stored? Is it a kind of big table, are relationships between tables possible? those Javascripts on the table crud actions, is that interpreted, what is that exactly? After working for some time with Azure Mobile Services I became a lot wiser: Those tables are just normal tables in an Azure SQL Server 2012 Creating the table columns through client code sucks, at least from my Javascript code, because the columns are deducted from the sent JSON data, and a datetime field is sent as string in JSON, so a string type column is created instead of a datetime column You can connect with SQL Management Studio to the Azure SQL Server, and although you can’t manage your columns through the SQL Management Studio UI, it is possible to just run SQL scripts to drop and create tables and indices When you create a table through SQL script, add the table with the same name in the Azure Mobile Services UI to hook it up and be able to access the table through the provided abstraction layer You can also go to the SQL Database through the Azure Mobile Services UI, and from there get in a web based SQL management studio where you can create columns and manage your data The table crud scripts and the scheduler scripts are full blown node.js scripts, introducing a lot of power with great performance The web based script editor is really powerful, I do most of my editing currently in the editor which has syntax highlighting and code completing. While editing the code JsHint is used for script validation. The documentation on Azure Mobile Services is… suboptimal. It is such a pity that there is no way to comment on it so the community could fill in the missing holes, like which node modules are already loaded, and which modules are available on Azure Mobile Services. Soon I was hacking away on Azure Mobile Services, creating my own database tables through script, and abusing the read script of an empty table named query to implement my own set of “services”. Bad thing with the current state of Azure Mobile Services is that the git support is not working if you are a co-administrator of your Azure subscription, and not and administrator (as in my case). Another bad thing is that Cross Origin Request Sharing (CORS) is not supported for the API yet, so no go yet from the browser client for API’s, which is my case. In his talk at Build 2013 Josh Twist showed that there is a work-around for accessing shared script code from the table scripts as well (another limitation mentioned in the post above). I could not find that code in the Votabl2 code example from the presentation at https://github.com/joshtwist/votabl2, but we can grab it from the presentation when it comes online on Channel9. • Troubleshooting a high SQL Server Compilation/Batch-Ratio

  I have a SQL Server (quad core x86, 4GB RAM) that constantly has almost the same values for "SQLServer:SQL Statistics: SQL compilations/sec" and "SQLServer:SQL Statistics: SQL batches/sec". This could be interpreted as a server running 100% ad hoc queries, each one of which has to be recompiled, but this is not the case here. The sys.dm_exec_query_stats DMV lists hundreds of query plans with an execution_count much larger than 1. Does anybody have any idea how to interpret / troubleshoot this phenomenon? BTW, the server's general performance counters (CPU,I/O,RAM) all show very modest utilization.

• "Request not supported" in IPCONFIG (WinXP SP3)

  In a customer PC (Windows XP SP3), suddenly the network went down: the network adapter appears with an error mark. I replaced the network card, but the new one does the same thing. When I enter IPCONFIG, XP shows this error (in standard and safe mode): Internal error occurred Request not supported Unable to query host name If I start the system with a boot cd the PC runs fine, so the problem seems to be in the XP installation. I tried: uninstalling and reinstalling the network card in the Device Manager disabling and reenabling the card netsh int ip reset netsh winsock reset catalog and a couple of "reset" programs (WinsockxpFix.exe, etc) with no luck. Is there any way to fix it without reinstalling XP? TIA, Pablo

• How do I speed up XML parsing operation?

  I currently have a php script set up to do some xml parsing. Sometimes the script is set as an on page include and other times it is accessed via an ajax call. The problem is the load time for this particular page is very long. I started to think that the php I had written to find what I need in the XML was written poorly and my script is very resource intense. After much research and testing the problem is indeed not my scripting (well perhaps you could consider it a problem with my scripting), but it looks like it takes a long time to load the particular xml sources. My code is like such: $source_recent = 'my xml feed'; $source_additional = 'the other feed I need'; $xmlstr_recent = file_get_contents($source_recent); $feed_recent = new SimpleXMLElement($xmlstr_recent); $xmlstr_additional = file_get_contents($source_additional); $feed_additional = new SimpleXMLElement($xmlstr_additional); In all my testing, the above code is what takes the time, not the additional processing I do below. Is there anyway around this or am I at the mercy of the load time of the xml URL's? One crazy thought I had to get around it is to load the xml contents into a db every so often, then just query the db for what I need. Thoughts? Ideas?

• Reduce Windows DNS Service caching on Window

  I'm struggling with DNS caching issues on a Windows based LAN. I've noticed that if I change a DNS record on a domain hosted by a 3rd party nameserver, that I always seem to be the very last person to see the change happen. I can often query the domain using a service which checks propagation around the world like www.whatsmydns.net but I usually find that all other DNS servers are correct and it's only my own server which has the old IP - even 8-12 hours later. This is an issue for us as we're website developers and often making changes to DNS records so these huge delays are frustrating. It seems to be because our primary domain controller server (+Active Directory & DNS) on our LAN (which is also our local DNS server) caches records for AGES (Way beyond it's published TTL). How can I stop the Windows DNS server from caching, or reduce the caching to only an hour or so?

• Form Validation Options

  The steps involved in transmitting form data from the client to the Web server User loads web form. User enters data in to web form fields User clicks submit On submit page validates fields using JavaScript. If validation errors are found then the validation script stops the browser from canceling posting the data to the web server and displays error messages as needed. If the form passes the data validation process then the browser will URL encode the values of every field and post it to the server.  The server reads the posted data from the query string and then again validates the data just to ensure data consistency and to prevent any non-validated data because JavaScript was turned off on the clients browser from being inserted in to a database or passed on to other process. If the data passes the second validation check then the server side code will continue with the requested processes. In my opinion, it is mandatory to validate data using client side and server side validation as a fail over process. The client side validation allows users to correct any error before they are sent to the web server for processing, and this allows for an immediate response back to the user regarding data that is not correct or in the proper format that is desired. In addition, this prevents unnecessary interaction between the user and the web server and will free up the server over time compared to doing only server side validation. Server validation is the last line of defense when it comes to validation because you can check to ensure the user’s data is correct before it is used in a business process or stored to a database. Honestly, I cannot foresee a scenario where I would only want to use one form of validation over another especially with the current cost of creating and maintaining data. In my opinion, the redundant validation is well worth the overhead.

• Move MySQL database while instance is online

  I have a MySQL instance containing a number of databases, one of which is an archive database (although using the INNODB rather than ARCHIVE storage engine) that is not queried or written to in normal operation. The data filesystem is filling up and I'd like to move the archive database's data directory to a different filesystem (and then symlink it back, obviously). If there are no SQL statements attempting to query or update the data during the move, can I safely do this while the MySQL instance and the other databases stay online and in use? I plan to rsync the database directory to the new filesystem, then rename the old one on the original filesystem to something different and create the new symlink. lsof reports that MySQL does have the .ibd files open, so presumably it would have to reopen them.

I feel close to having this working. • Launching Ops Center 12c

  Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 12c is most ambitious version of the Ops Center tooling that we've ever released. I think that make it appropriate that we launched it in grand style! When it became clear we were going to be complete with the 12c final release about this time of year, the marketing team proposed that we roll the launch of 12c into Oracle OpenWorld Tokyo.  I thought that sounded like a fine idea!  You see, I have always loved Japan.  I even studied a bit of Japanese language back in school. OpenWorld Tokyo was an outstanding even this year.  It was held in Roppongi, one of the most stylish districts in Tokyo. And, to make things even better, the Sakura (cherry blossoms) were blooming.  If you've never been in Japan for cherry blossom season, it's a must see!  Here are a couple of pics for you. Here is a picture from Roppongi, near the conference.  Here's a picture near the Imperial Palace.  A couple of friends from the local sales team took me here before my flight out. So, now back to the product launch! We choose to launch the product in John Fowler's "Engineered Systems" keynote address.  It made perfect sense because of the close ties of Ops Center to the Systems portfolio of products.  It was a packed house for the keynote.  Here's a picture I took just before we started -- there were also hundreds more people in "overflow" rooms in other parts of the venue. Here's a picture of me on stage during the launch. While there are countless new features in Ops Center 12c that customers will love, I had to limit myself to discussing just three. Mission Critical Clouds Solaris 11 Engineered Systems So, what does Mission Critical Cloud mean?  It means we've expanded EM's cloud capabilities in a couple of key areas. First, we've expanded the "self service provisioning" capabilities we have to include SPARC -- not just x86.  Now you can build clouds of Solaris Zones with ease!  Second, we've much more deeply integrated high-end storage and network management into the cloud layers.  These may our IaaS story is now much more powerful! For Solaris 11, we didn't simply port our monitoring agent to S11.  That would have been easy, but also boring! We support S11 deeply.  Full access to the power of the IPS packaging system, the new virtualized networking stack, new Zones features, the Auto Install framework.  If you're ready to try Solaris 11 then Ops Center is ready for you. Last is on the area of Engineered Systems.  These combinations of hardware and software are fast and powerful. However, we're also on a mission to make them ever easier to manage.  We've made major strides with Ops Center 12c.   I am looking for recommendations for a lightweight, dynamic, fully JavaScript UI library for websites. Doesn't have to be amazing visually, the end result is for simple demos I create. What I want can be summed up as "Ext-like, but not GPL'ed, and a much smaller footprint". I want to be able to construct UIs dynamically and fully through code. My need for this is currently driven by this particle designer. Depending on what query parameters you give it, the UI components change, example 1, example2. Currently this is written in Ext, but Ext's license and footprint are turn offs for me. I like UKI a lot, but it's not very good for dynamically building UIs since everything is absolutely positioned. Extending Uki to support that is something I am considering.
