• Pipeline For Downloading and Processing Files In Unix/Linux Environment With Perl

  I have a list of files URLS where I want to download them: http://somedomain.com/foo1.gz http://somedomain.com/foo2.gz http://somedomain.com/foo3.gz What I want to do is the following for each file: Download foo1,2.. in parallel with wget and nohup. Every time it complete download process them with myscript.sh What I have is this: #! /usr/bin/perl @files = glob("foo*.gz"); foreach $file (@files) { my $downurls = "http://somedomain.com/".$file; system("nohup wget $file &"); system("./myscript.sh $file >> output.txt"); } The problem is that I can't tell the above pipeline when does the file finish downloading. So now it myscript.sh doesn't get executed properly. What's the right way to achieve this?

• Error calling webservice from JQuery

  I have a strange problem when I'm trying to call a simple webservice method from Jquery. Locally it works fine, but on my test-server it does not. The jquery request looks like this (only showing the actual request and not the rest of the method): $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "/Service/Service.asmx/AddTab", data: "tab=" + element.innerHTML, success: function(msg) { alert('success'); } }); When I run this locally from the test-server it works fine, which has me wondering if it could be some setting that I've missed in the IIS. If I navigate to the .asmx file and click the AddTab method I get a list of SOAP 1.1 and SOAP 1.2 XML, but not the HTTP POST request. If I navigate to it locally I get all three (SOAP 1.1, SOAP 1.2 and HTTP Post) The service is set up as follows: [WebService(Namespace = "mynamespace")] [WebServiceBinding(ConformsTo = WsiProfiles.BasicProfile1_1)] [System.ComponentModel.ToolboxItem(false)] [ScriptService()] public class Service : System.Web.Services.WebService { [WebMethod(EnableSession=true)] [ScriptMethod()] public void AddTab(string tab) { //Some code to add a tab which evidently works locally... } } Anyone have a clue what I'm missing here?

• Tricky Big-O complexity

That is as a product of the inner loop, the outer loop -- will never be executed more than 100 times, so it can be omitted. What I'm not sure about is the while clause, should it be incorporated into the Big-O complexity? For very large i values it could make an impact, or arithmetic operations, doesn't matter on what scale, count as basic operations and can be omitted?

• Parallel For Loop - Problems when adding to a List - Possible .Net Bugs

  I am having some issues involving Parallel for loops and adding to a List. The problem is, the same code may generate different output at different times. I have set up some test code below. In this code, I create a List of 10,000 int values. 1/10th of the values will be 0, 1/10th of the values will be 1, all the way up to 1/10th of the values being 9. After setting up this List, I setup a Parallel for loop that iterates through the list. If the current number is 0, I add a value to a new List. After the Parallel for loop completes, I output the size of the list. The size should always be 1,000. Most of the time, the correct answer is given. However, I have seen 3 possible incorrect outcomes occur: The size of the list is less than 1,000 An IndexOutOfRangeException occurs @ doubleList.Add(0.0); An ArgumentException occurs @ doubleList.Add(0.0); The message for the ArgumentException given was: Destination array was not long enough. Check destIndex and length, and the array's lower bounds. What could be causing the errors? Is this a .Net bug? Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening? Please try the code for yourself. If you do not get an error, try it a few times.   Hi. I have an issue with System.Threading.Timer. I am scheduling some actions using a time in a windows service. The timer starts executing the callback after a specified dueTime period. The windows service starts up after reboot automatically. However, I have observed a strange thing after a system reboot- the callback method starts executing itself 3 or 4 minutes before the specified period. What might be the reason for such behavior? • ASP.NET 1.0 site error after upgrade to VS.NET 2010

  Help. I installed VS.NET 2010 and now my existing ASP.NET MVC application won't run. I checked that the 1.0 version of System.Web.Mvc is still referenced but when I browse my application, I get an error like this: "Compiler Error Message: CS1579: foreach statement cannot operate on variables of type 'object' because 'object' does not contain a public definition for 'GetEnumerator'". My partial view has this declaration: <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<List<ProductModel" %> //various import statements <div <% foreach (var category in Model.Categories) { % <span<%= category.Name %</span <span<%= category.Market%</span <% } % </div For what it's worth, the source view shows ViewUserControl in red and gives a tool tip reading "Cannot resolve symbol 'ViewUserControl'". My working code didn't change, the only delta is that I upgraded to VS.NET 2010 (which includes MVC 2.0); I'm sure something is not referenced correctly but I cannot figure out what's going on.

• Why might RvdProxy.getServices() incorrectly return an empty Array?

Is there a gotcha when using Tibco's DaemonManager that is causing me to come unstuck?

  Hi, I'm currently working on an application which requires transmission of speech encoded to a specific audio format. System.Speech.AudioFormat.SpeechAudioFormatInfo synthFormat = new System.Speech.AudioFormat.SpeechAudioFormatInfo(System.Speech.AudioFormat.EncodingFormat.Pcm, 8000, 16, 1, 16000, 2, null); This states that the audio is in PCM format, 8000 samples per second, 16 bits per sample, mono, 16000 average bytes per second, block alignment of 2. When I attempt to execute the following code there is nothing written to my MemoryStream instance; however when I change from 8000 samples per second up to 11025 the audio data is written successfully. I have a workaround involving a wav file that I generated and converted to the correct sample rate using some sound editing tools, but I would like to generate the audio from within the application if I can. One particular point of interest was that the SpeechRecognitionEngine accepts that audio format and successfully recognized the speech in my synthesized wave file... Update: Recently discovered that this audio format succeeds for certain installed voices, but fails for others. It fails specifically for LH Michael and LH Michelle, and failure varies for certain voice settings defined in the PromptBuilder.

It was nice n very usefull. Since the code was in c# i tried to convert it in vb. Everything went good but failed at a point of case sensitive and next one is that i had my nested class name itemcategory and my property name was category. there it arouse the problem. it didn't searched for category but it searched for itemcategory. so confused on it.   i am designing a site with a comment system and i would like a twitter like reply system. The if the user puts @a_registered_username i would like it to become a link to the user's profile. i think preg_replace is the function needed for this. $ALL_USERS_ROW *['USERNAME'] is the database query array for all the users and ['USERNAME'] is the username row. $content is the comment containing the @username i think this should not be very hard to solve for someone who is good at php. Does anybody have any idea how to do it?

• How can I await the first completed async task of a list in .Net?

  My input is a long list of files located on an Amazon S3 server. I'd like to download the metadata of the files, compute the hashes of the local files, and compare the metadata hash with the local files' hash. Currently, I use a loop to start all the metadata downloads asynchronously, then as each completes, compute MD5 on the local file if needed and compare. I'd rather process them in the order that they complete so that I get them faster. The MD5 calculation is long and synchronous. I tried making it async but the process locked up. I think that the MD5 task was added to the end of .Net's task list and it didn't get to run until all the downloads completed. Ideally, I process the response as they arrive, not in order, and the MD5 is asynchronous but gets a chance to run. • Linux servers going into Halt when pressing Control-D in putty or exit in the shell

  Since today at noon, there's a number of Linux CentOS servers which are going to Halt whenever i type exit or use Control-D to close the putty window. Did anyone encounter this weird behavior before? I've checked the aliases list on the servers and there is no alias regarding halt command. After the server came online i've checked the history and saw a "logout" command there but nothing which is related to Halt. At first, i thought it happens only from my computer but later i realized that it happens to everyone which types exit, logout or control+d. 2 of these server are our main iptables firewalls and so it's super critical, your assistance is much appreciated. • Duplex communication using NetTcpBinding - ContractFilter mismatch?

  I'm making slow and steady progress towards having a duplex communication channel open between a client and a server, using NetTcpBinding. (FYI, you can observe my newbie progress here and here!) I'm now at the stage where I have successfully connected to my server, through the server's firewall, and the client can make requests of the server. In the other direction, however, things aren't quite so happy. It works fine when testing on my own machine, but when testing over the internet, when I try to initiate a callback from the server side, I get an error: The message with Action 'http://MyWebService/IWebService/HelloWorld' cannot be processed at the receiver, due to a ContractFilter mismatch at the EndpointDispatcher. This may be because of either a contract mismatch (mismatched Actions between sender and receiver) or a binding/security mismatch between the sender and the receiver. Check that sender and receiver have the same contract and the same binding (including security requirements, e.g. Message, Transport, None). Here are some of the key bits of code.   The following code doesn't compile (error CS0123: No overload for 'System.Convert.ToString(object)' matches delegate 'System.Converter<T,string>'): class A<T> { void Method(T obj) { Converter<T, string> toString = Convert.ToString; } } however, this does: class A<T> { void Method(T obj) { Converter<T, string> toString = o => Convert.ToString(o); } } intellisense gives o as a T, and the Convert.ToString call as using Convert.ToString(object). In c# 3.5, delegates can be created from co/contra-variant methods, so the ToString(object) method can be used as a Converter<T, string>, as T is always guarenteed to be an object. So, the first example (method group overload resolution) should be finding the only applicable method string Convert.ToString(object o), the same as the method call overload resolution. Why is the method group & method call overload resolution producing different results?

• Spring 3 - Custom Security

  I am in the process of converting a legacy application from proprietary technology to a Spring based web app, leaving the backend system as is. The login service is provided by the backend system through a function call that takes in some parameter (username, password plus some others) and provides an output that includes the authroizations for the user and other properties like firstname, lastname etc. What do I need to do to weave this into Spring 3.0 security module. Looks like I need to provide a custom AuthenticationProvider implementation (is this where I call the backend function?). Do I also need a custom User and UserDetailsService implementation which needs loadUserByName(String userName)? Any pointers on good documentation for this? The reference that came with the download is okay, but doesn't help too much in terms of implementing custom security.

• Escaping Code for Different Shells

  Question: What characters do I need to escape in a user-entered string to securely pass it into shells on Windows and Unix? What shell differences and version differences should be taken into account? Can I use printf "%q" somehow, and is that reliable across shells? Backstory (a.k.a. Shameless Self-Promotion): I made a little DSL, the Vision Web Template Language, which allows the user to create templates for X(HT)ML documents and fragments, then automatically fill them in with content. It's designed to separate template logic from dynamic content generation, in the same way that CSS is used to separate markup from presentation. In order to generate dynamic content, a Vision script must defer to a program written in a language that can handle the generation logic, such as Perl or Python. (Aside: using PHP is also possible, but Vision is intended to solve some of the very problems that PHP perpetuates.) In order to do this, the script makes use of the @system directive, which executes a shell command and expands to its output. (Platform-specific generation can be handled using @unix or @windows, which only expand on the proper platform.) The solution, logically, is to include a @quote directive that produces a properly escaped string for the current platform. @system './login.pl' { @quote : USERNAME; @quote : PASSWORD } But what should @quote actually do? It needs to be both cross-platform and secure, and I don't want to create terrible problems with a naive implementation. Any thoughts?

  As discussed here, I'm trying to add a WCF endpoint-extension; I've got it working, but I need to include the full assembly details: <extensions> <behaviorExtensions> <add name="protobuf" type="ProtoBuf.ServiceModel.ProtoBehaviorExtension, protobuf-net, Version=1.0.0.275, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=257b51d87d2e4d67"/> </behaviorExtensions> </extensions> What I would like to do (to avoid issues when updating etc, especially for samples) is to include just the names: <add name="protobuf" type="ProtoBuf.ServiceModel.ProtoBehaviorExtension, protobuf-net"/> (which is what you might expect from standard assembly-naming conventions) However, if I do this, I get a big error: Parser Error Message: An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for system.serviceModel/behaviors: Extension element 'protobuf' cannot be added to this element. Verify that the extension is registered in the extension collection at system.serviceModel/extensions/behaviorExtensions. Is it possible (and if so: how) to add an extension without having to specify the assembly-version?

• Is there a practical alternative to struct inheritance? (C#)

  I am writing code that will populate the Margin, Padding and BorderThickness properties of classes in the System.Windows.Documents namespace. Each of these properties accepts a value in the form of a System.Windows.Thickness, which is a struct. However, I wish to associate some additional data with each of these property assignments, which may subsequently be retrieved by my code. If Thickness were a class, I would inherit from it and define properties in the subclass to store my additional data items. But since it is a struct, inheritance is not possible. Is there any practical way to achieve this, while maintaining type-compatibility with the properties I am populating? Thanks for your ideas, Tim

• Why is insertion into my tree faster on sorted input than random input?

  Now I've always heard binary search trees are faster to build from randomly selected data than ordered data, simply because ordered data requires explicit rebalancing to keep the tree height at a minimum. Recently I implemented an immutable treap, a special kind of binary search tree which uses randomization to keep itself relatively balanced. In contrast to what I expected, I found I can consistently build a treap about 2x faster and generally better balanced from ordered data than unordered data -- and I have no idea why.
