Boosting my GA with Neural Networks and/or Reinforcement Learning

As I have mentioned in previous questions I am writing a maze solving application to help me learn about more theoretical CS subjects, after some trouble I've got a Genetic Algorithm working that can evolve a set of rules (handled by boolean values) in order to find a good solution through a maze. That being said, the GA alone is okay, but I'd like to beef it up with a Neural Network, even though I have no real working knowledge of Neural Networks (no formal theoretical CS education). After doing a bit of reading on the subject I found that a Neural Network could be used to train a genome in order to improve results. Let's say I have a genome (group of genes), such as 1 0 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 1 1 1 0 0... How could I use a Neural Network (I'm assuming MLP?) to train and improve my genome? In addition to this as I know nothing about Neural Networks I've been looking into implementing some form of Reinforcement Learning, using my maze matrix (2 dimensional array), although I'm a bit stuck on what the following algorithm wants from me: (from http://people.revoledu.com/kardi/tutorial/ReinforcementLearning/Q-Learning-Algorithm.htm) 1. Set parameter , and environment reward matrix R 2. Initialize matrix Q as zero matrix 3. For each episode: * Select random initial state * Do while not reach goal state o Select one among all possible actions for the current state o Using this possible action, consider to go to the next state o Get maximum Q value of this next state based on all possible actions o Compute o Set the next state as the current state End Do End For The big problem for me is implementing a reward matrix R and what a Q matrix exactly is, and getting the Q value. I use a multi-dimensional array for my maze and enum states for every move. How would this be used in a Q-Learning algorithm? If someone could help out by explaining what I would need to do to implement the following, preferably in Java although C# would be nice too, possibly with some source code examples it'd be appreciated.

Label in PyQt4 GUI not updating with every loop of FOR loop

I'm having a problem, where I wish to run several command line functions from a python program using a GUI. I don't know if my problem is specific to PyQt4 or if it has to do with my bad use of python code. What I wish to do is have a label on my GUI change its text value to inform the user which command is being executed. My problem however, arises when I run several commands using a for loop. I would like the label to update itself with every loop, however, the program is not updating the GUI label with every loop, instead, it only updates itself once the entire loop is completed, and displays only the last command that was executed. I am using PyQt4 for my GUI environment. And I have established that the text variable for the label is indeed being updated with every loop, but, it is not actually showing up visually in the GUI. Is there a way for me to force the label to update itself? I have tried the update() and repaint() methods within the loop, but they don't make any difference. I would really appreciate any help. SmartGWT TreeGrid Selection

I have a SmartGWT webapp that uses a TreeGrid with a dataSource. I would like this treeGrid to preselect values saved in a cookie. I have gotten the value to be saved in the cookie correctly, however I have tried several different methods of getting the treeGrid to select these values and I can not get it to work. I am attempting to do this in the onmoduleLoad method in my entry point. I have tried: Cookies.setCookie( "selectedUnit", TreeGrid.getSelectedPaths() ) to set the cookie and then when the page is reloaded: TreeGrid.setSelectedPaths( Cookies.getCookie("selectedUnit" ) When I could not get that to work, I tried storing just the id of the item selected: Cookies.setCookies( "selectedUnit", TreeGrid.getSelected().getAttribute("id") ) and then onLoad attempting to find that record and select it: TreeGrid.selectRecord( TreeGrid.getTree().find("id", Cookies.getCookie("selectedUnit") ) ) This did not work either, so finally I tried storing TreeGrid.getSelectedState() and upon retrieving that value form the cookie onLoad, passing it to TreeGrid.setSelectedState() similar to my first attempt, but passing state instead of path. I could not get any of these things to work. Can I not tell the TreeGrid to select an item in the 'OnmoduleLoad' method? Is this action only valid after the TreeGrid has been drawn? If that is the case where and how can I do this? Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

WPF TreeViewItem Context Menu Unhighlights Item

I have been having problems with this for some time now, and have come up with some less-than-desirable solutions. The problem is that when a TreeViewItem's context menu is opened, the TreeViewItem is greyed out. Is it possible for a TreeViewItem to stay highlighted while its ContextMenu is open? The problem with the TreeViewItem greying out, is that it gives no relation to the context menu and the TreeViewItem, and it looks ugly. Generally, the code I use for setting a context menu is this. Sometimes the context menu will be generated by the code with a PreviewRightMouseButtonDown EventSetter, but it doesn't make a difference. <TreeView> <TreeView.Resources> <Style TargetType="{x:Type TreeViewItem}"> <Setter Property="ContextMenu"> <Setter.Value> <ContextMenu> <MenuItem Header="Menu Item 1" /> <MenuItem Header="Menu Item 2" /> </ContextMenu> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> </TreeView.Resources> <TreeViewItem Header="Item 1"> <TreeViewItem Header="Sub-Item 1"/> </TreeViewItem> <TreeViewItem Header="Item 2"></TreeViewItem> </TreeView> So far the only solution I have found is to override the "grey" unfocused color with the focused color, but then the TreeView never seems unfocused, such as when another control is clicked on. I have had problems with ListViews as well.

Is it possible to create a web service operation using primitive or basic Java types when using the Jaxb2Marschaller in spring-ws? When I try to call the webservice I get the following error: java.lang.IllegalStateException: No adapter for endpoint [...]: Does your endpoint implement a supported interface like MessageHandler or PayloadEndpoint I found out that if I change the method to that: @Override @PayloadRoot(localPart = "AddTaskRequest", namespace = "http://example.com/examplews/") public JAXBElement<Long> addTask(final JAXBElement<Task> task) throws AddTaskFault { final ObjectFactory objectFactory = new ObjectFactory(); return objectFactory.createAddTaskResponse(0L); } I am able to call it - but this signature is not compatible with the interface generated by the maven jaxws plugin. What can I do to configure either spring-ws to be able to use the first kind of implementation or to tell maven jaxws plugin to generate the second variant of the interface? NAudio demos not working anymore

What I want would be for them to be rendered, and the remaining row (the product-specific columns) to be empty. Is there a way to do this? Note: I have also tried nested rich:datatables, but the internal columns do not overlap with the outer columns containing the header. With rich:subtable the inner columns overlap with the outer columns and show nice.

How To Raise Property Changed events on a Dependency Property?

OK, so I have this control with two properties. One of these is a DependencyProperty, the other is an "alias" to the first one. What I need to be able to do is raise the PropertyChanged event for the second one (the alias) when the first one is changed. NOTE: I am using DependencyObjects, not INotifyPropertyChanged (tried that, didn't work because my control is a sub-classed ListView) something like this..... protected override void OnPropertyChanged(DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e) { base.OnPropertyChanged(e); if (e.Property == MyFirstProperty) { RaiseAnEvent( MySecondProperty ); /// what is the code that would go here? } } If I were using an INotify I could do like this... public string SecondProperty { get { return this.m_IconPath; } } public string IconPath { get { return this.m_IconPath; } set { if (this.m_IconPath != value) { this.m_IconPath = value; this.SendPropertyChanged("IconPath"); this.SendPropertyChanged("SecondProperty"); } } } where I can raise PropertyChanged events on multiple properties from one setter. Code Completion -- Aptana Eclipse Plugin

I have been doing javascript development for the last couple weeks and have tried JSDT and Aptana to assist in code completion. JSDT wasn't very good at all, but I did have more luck with Aptana (used as eclipse plug-in, not the standalone product). The problem I'm encountering is that when I create javascript classes I cannot get code completion to work. For example, if I use the following then code completion doesn't work: var foo = new function(value){ this.myMethod= function(){ } } I have also verified that the following won't work: function foo(value){ this.myMethod= function(){ } } I have found that using a JSON style does work: var foo = { myMethod: function(){ } } Does anyone know why Aptana works for the last style, but not the first? Using the JSON style won't work for me because I have to have seperate instances of the class in question. Also, I am not very successful in getting code completion to work across files. For example, if I have 3 files in the javascript directory then I usually cannot get Aptana to pick up the JSON style markup in the other two classes. This DID work at one point (for the first 2 classes I created), but since then whenever I add new classes they aren't picked up. Thank you very much for you assistance. Jeremy

Problem deleting record using Entity Framework and System.Data.SQLite

I have a SQLite DB that is set up so when I delete a Person the delete is cascaded. This works fine when I manually delete a Person (all records that reference the PersonID are deleted). But when I use Entity Framework to delete the Person I get an error: System.InvalidOperationException: The operation failed: The relationship could not be changed because one or more of the foreign-key properties is non-nullable. When a change is made to a relationship, the related foreign-key property is set to a null value. If the foreign-key does not support null values, a new relationship must be defined, the foreign-key property must be assigned another non-null value, or the unrelated object must be deleted. I don't understand why this is occurring. My trigger is set to clean up all related objects before deleting the object it was told to delete. When I go into the model editor and check the properties of the relationship it shows no action for the OnDelete property. Why isn't this set correctly by pulling it from the DB? Binding to an ObservableCollection attached property.

I want to create an attached property of type ObservableCollection<Notification> and bind it to a property of the same type on the DataContext. A 'Binding' can only be set on a DependencyProperty of a DependencyObject. This only seems to be a problem when the attached property is of type ObservableCollection so it seems like WPF is trying to do something magical when binding properties of this type and getting confused in the process. Anyone know what I need to do to make it work?

JSF invoke backing bean method and reRender components on ENTER key

Hi, I have a datatable with as search fields. I want a method on the backing bean to be invoked when ENTER key is pressed, as well as the DataTable to be re-rendered. My approach so far only works in IE 6, and 7, not in FF. This is the inputText: <h:inputText value="#{applicantProductListBean.applicantNameFilterValue}" id="applicantNameFilterValue" onkeypress="submitByEnter(event)"> </h:inputText> and this is the Javascript method I am invoking: function submitByEnter(e){ if(e.keyCode==13){ // alert("Enter was pressed"); e.returnValue=false; e.cancel=true; document.getElementById("applicantProductListForm:refreshButton").click(); } } As you can see, the Javascript method clicks on the button refresh, which exists on the page: <a4j:commandButton value="Refresh" id="refreshButton" action="#{applicantProductListBean.refreshData}" image="/images/icons/refresh48x48.gif" reRender="table, scroller"> </a4j:commandButton> The refreshData method does not return anything. As said before, this only works in IE 6 and IE 7. Does anyone know why it does not work in FF? An alternative I was considering was HotKey, which can indeed catch the event of ENTER, but it can only invoke Javascript, so it isn't appropriate. Is the proper way to do this via RichFaces or plain JSF? Cheers! I.e to check if really the Queue is initialised or not. It is. The right variables are stored and et. all [I inserted a value in that Q, that part of the code is not shown] But the second writeline is not giving the right expected answer: It serializes the entire Queue to 00-00-00. JSF 2.0: use Enum values for selectOneMenu

I'm using JSF 2.0 and want to fill a selectOneMenu with the values of my Enum. A simple example: // Sample Enum public enum Gender { MALE("Male"), FEMALE("Female"); private final String label; private Gender(String label) { this.label = label; } public String getLabel() { return this.label; } } Unfortunately, i can't use Seam for my current project, which had a nice <s:convertEnum/> Tag that did most of the work. In Seam, to use the values of the Enum, i had to write the following markup (and create a factory that provides the #{genderValues}:  <h:selectOneMenu id="persongender" value="#{person.gender}"> <s:selectItems var="_gender" value="#{genderValues}"" label="#{_gender.label}"/> <s:convertEnum/> </h:selectOneMenu> The result is that i don't have to declare the Enum values explicitely anymore inside the markup. I know that this is not very easy in JSF <2.0, but is there any new in JSF2 to help with this issue? Or does Weld help here somehow? If there is nothing new in JSF2, what's the easiest way to do it in JSF 1.2? Or can i even integrate the Seam JSF tag and the corresponding classes of Seam to get the same feature in a JavaEE6-App (without the Seam container)?

android pending intent notification problem

Hi all! I have a alarm thing going on in my app and it launches a notification that then when pressed launched an activity. The problem is that when I create more than one alarm then the activity launched from the notification gets the same extras as the first one. I think the problem is either with the intent i put in the pending intent or in the pending intent itself. I think I might need to put a flag on one of these but I dont know which one. Intent showIntent =new Intent(context, notificationreceiver.class); showIntent.putExtra("details", alarmname); PendingIntent contentIntent = PendingIntent.getActivity(context, 0, showIntent, 0); notification.setLatestEventInfo(context, "The event is imminent", alarmname, contentIntent); And the receiver of the notification Bundle b = getIntent().getExtras(); String eventname = b.getString("details"); details.setText(eventname); The "details" extra is the same to every the next time a notification happens instead of having the different value. Until I set the intents I am sure that the correct value goes to the "details" so its a problem of getting the first intent everytime i press any notification. How can I make it to launch the correct intents? Hope I was as clear as i could Thanks!

But once it points to a different site, all the fields appear, but the values all appear in the following format: Failed to render "Title" column because of an error in the "Single line of text" field type control. See details in log. Exception message: List does not exist The page you selected contains a list that does not exist. It may have been deleted by another user.. If I change the ControlMode to Edit, the values are displayed correctly. So how do I get it to work while in Display mode?

Strings in array are no longer strings after jQuery.each()

I'm pretty confused with the behaviour of arrays of strings when I loop them through the jQuery.each() method. Apparently, the strings become jQuery objects inside the callback function. However, I cannot use the this.get() method to obtain the original string; doing so triggers a this.get is not a function error message. I suppose the reason is that it's not a DOM node. I can do $(this).get() but it makes my string become an array (from "foo" to ["f", "o", "o"]). How can I cast it back to string? I need to get a variable of String type because I pass it to other functions that compare the values among them. Sharepoint GetListItems using rowLimit parameter is not limiting the results returned

In SharePoint I am using the default view of a list. When I use GetListItems method I can pass into it the following: public XmlNode GetListItems ( string listName, string viewName, XmlNode query, XmlNode viewFields, string rowLimit, XmlNode queryOptions, string webID ) I am passing in "" for the viewName and am passing a rowLimit of 1000. By Default view only returns 100 items. 100 Items are still being returned not 1000. Can you use the rowLimit when not specifying a view? Is it possible to bring back 1000 items using the query instead? I do not really want to use a GUID for the viewName as I would have to look it up for each list and perform a big refactor. Update I am now using the guid of the view and my list still returns the incorrect number of items. I know the guid is being used as I sued an incorrect one and it errord out. Any ideas what could be wrong? Redrawing rounded corners when using curvycorners-plugin for jQuery.

I'm using the curvycorners jQuery plugin (http://www.curvycorners.net/instructions/) to force IE to render rounded corners on divs. It works really well, apart from one thing: I have a validation error-message that pops up inside the div, using jQuery's "show" method. Curvycorners adds an extra div that is absolute positioned and has a set height, this means that you have to redraw the rounded corners if you want the containing div to resize when the error-message is shown. Webforms MVP Passive View - event handling

Should the view have nothing event specific in its interface and call the presenter plain methods to handle events and not have any official EventHandlers? For instance // ASPX protected void OnSaveButtonClicked(object sender, EventArgs e) { _Presenter.OnSave(); } Or should the view have event EventHandlers defined in its interface and link those up explicitly to control events on the page // View public interface IView { ... event EventHandler Saved; ... } // ASPX Page implementing the view protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e) { base.OnInit(e); SaveButton.Click += delegate { Saved(this, e); }; } // Presenter internal Presenter(IView view,IRepository repository) { _view = view; _repository = repository; view.Saved += Save; } The second seems like a whole lot of plumbing code to add all over. My intention is to understand the benefits of each style and not just a blanket answer of which to use. My main goals is clarity and high value testability. Testability overall is important, but I wouldn't sacrifice design simplicity and clarity to be able to add another type of test that doesn't lead to too much gain over the test cases already possible with a simpler design. If a design choice does off more testability please include an example (pseudo code is fine) of the type of test it can now offer so I can make my decision if I value that type of extra test enough. How to retrieve TextBlock from DataGridColumnHeader HeaderStyle in Silverlight

As in Silverlight I can't bind directly to a DataGridColumn's property, in order to dynamically change the text of the column header, I have to write the following code using HeaderStyle. <data:DataGridTextColumn.HeaderStyle> <Style TargetType="dataprimitives:DataGridColumnHeader"> <Setter Property="ContentTemplate"> <Setter.Value> <DataTemplate> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Resource.ClientName, Mode=OneWay}"/> </DataTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> </data:DataGridTextColumn.HeaderStyle> </data:DataGridTextColumn> My problem is that now I need to get the Name of the TextBlock from grid.Columns[index]. Is there any way I can do this? I tired to use VisualTreeHelper but since DataGridColumn is not a FrameworkElement it will throw me an error... Any help would be greatly appreciated! Xin

Binding update adds news series to WPF Toolkit chart (instead of replacing/updating series)

I'm currently recoding a bar chart in my app to make use of the Chart class in the WPF Toolkit. Using MVVM, I'm binding the ItemsSource of a ColumnSeries in my chart to a property on my viewmodel. Here's the relevant XAML: <charting:Chart> <charting:ColumnSeries ItemsSource="{Binding ScoreDistribution.ClassScores}" IndependentValuePath="ClassName" DependentValuePath="Score"/> </charting:Chart> And the property on the viewmodel: // NB: viewmodel derived from Josh Smith's BindableObject public class ExamResultsViewModel : BindableObject { // ... private ScoreDistributionByClass _scoreDistribution; public ScoreDistributionByClass ScoreDistribution { get { return _scoreDistribution; } set { if (_scoreDistribution == value) { return; } _scoreDistribution = value; RaisePropertyChanged(() => ScoreDistribution); } } However, when I update the ScoreDistribution property (by setting it to a new ScoreDistribution object), the chart gets an additional series (based on the new ScoreDistribution) as well as keeping the original series (based on the previous ScoreDistribution). To illustrate this, here are a couple of screenshots showing the chart before an update (with a single data point in ScoreDistribution.ClassScores) and after it (now with 3 data points in ScoreDistribution.ClassScores): Now, I realise there are other ways I could be doing this (e.g. changing the contents of the original ScoreDistribution object rather than replacing it entirely), but I don't understand why it's going wrong in its current form. Can anyone help?
