• Memory Efficient Windows SOA Server

  Installing a Memory Efficient SOA Suite 11.1.1.6 on Windows Server Well 11.1.1.6 is now available for download so I thought I would build a Windows Server environment to run it.  I will minimize the memory footprint of the installation by putting all functionality into the Admin Server of the SOA Suite domain. Required Software 64-bit JDK SOA Suite If you want 64-bit then choose “Generic” rather than “Microsoft Windows 32bit JVM” or “Linux 32bit JVM” This has links to all the required software. If you choose “Generic” then the Repository Creation Utility link does not show, you still need this so change the platform to “Microsoft Windows 32bit JVM” or “Linux 32bit JVM” to get the software. Similarly if you need a database then you need to change the platform to get the link to XE for Windows or Linux. If possible I recommend installing a 64-bit JDK as this allows you to assign more memory to individual JVMs. Windows XE will work, but it is better if you can use a full Oracle database because of the limitations on XE that sometimes cause it to run out of space with large or multiple SOA deployments. Installation Steps The following flow chart outlines the steps required in installing and configuring SOA Suite. The steps in the diagram are explained below. 64-bit? Is a 64-bit installation required?  The Windows & Linux installers will install 32-bit versions of the Sun JDK and JRockit.  A separate JDK must be installed for 64-bit. Install 64-bit JDK The 64-bit JDK can be either Hotspot or JRockit.  You can choose either JDK 1.7 or 1.6. Install WebLogic If you are using 64-bit then install WebLogic using “java –jar wls1036_generic.jar”.  Make sure you include Coherence in the installation, the easiest way to do this is to accept the “Typical” installation. SOA Suite Required? If you are not installing SOA Suite then you can jump straight ahead and create a WebLogic domain. Install SOA Suite Run the SOA Suite installer and point it at the existing Middleware Home created for WebLogic.  Note to run the SOA installer on Windows the user must have admin privileges.  I also found that on Windows Server 2008R2 I had to start the installer from a command prompt with administrative privileges, granting it privileges when it ran caused it to ignore the jreLoc parameter. Database Available? Do you have access to a database into which you can install the SOA schema.  SOA Suite requires access to an Oracle database (it is supported on other databases but I would always use an oracle database). Install Database I use an 11gR2 Oracle database to avoid XE limitations.  Make sure that you set the database character set to be unicode (AL32UTF8).  I also disabled the new security settings because they get in the way for a developer database.  Don’t forget to check that number of processes is at least 150 and number of sessions is not set, or is set to at least 200 (in the DB init parameters). Run RCU The SOA Suite database schemas are created by running the Repository Creation Utility.  Install the “SOA and BPM Infrastructure” component to support SOA Suite.  If you keep the schema prefix as “DEV” then the config wizard is easier to complete. Run Config Wizard The Config wizard creates the domain which hosts the WebLogic server instances.  To get a minimum footprint SOA installation choose the “Oracle Enterprise Manager” and “Oracle SOA Suite for developers” products.  All other required products will be automatically selected. The “for developers” installs target the appropriate components at the AdminServer rather than creating a separate managed server to house them.  This reduces the number of JVMs required to run the system and hence the amount of memory required.  This is not suitable for anything other than a developer environment as it mixes the admin and runtime functions together in a single server.  It also takes a long time to load all the required modules, making start up a slow process. If it exists I would recommend running the config wizard found in the “oracle_common/common/bin” directory under the middleware home.  This should have access to all the templates, including SOA. If you also want to run BAM in the same JVM as everything else then you need to “Select Optional Configuration” for “Managed Servers, Clusters and Machines”. To target BAM at the AdminServer delete the “bam_server1” managed server that is created by default.  This will result in BAM being targeted at the AdminServer. Installation Issues I had a few problems when I came to test everything in my mega-JVM. Following applications were not targeted and so I needed to target them at the AdminServer: b2bui composer Healthcare UI FMW Welcome Page Application (11.1.0.0.0) How Memory Efficient is It? On a Windows 2008R2 Server running under VirtualBox I was able to bring up both the 11gR2 database and SOA/BPM/BAM in 3G memory.  I allocated a minimum 512M to the PermGen and a minimum of 1.5G for the heap.  The setting from setSOADomainEnv are shown below: set DEFAULT_MEM_ARGS=-Xms1536m -Xmx2048m set PORT_MEM_ARGS=-Xms1536m -Xmx2048m set DEFAULT_MEM_ARGS=%DEFAULT_MEM_ARGS% -XX:PermSize=512m -XX:MaxPermSize=768m set PORT_MEM_ARGS=%PORT_MEM_ARGS% -XX:PermSize=512m -XX:MaxPermSize=768m I arrived at these numbers by monitoring JVM memory usage in JConsole. Task Manager showed total system memory usage at 2.9G – just below the 3G I allocated to the VM. Performance is not stellar but it runs and I could run JDeveloper alongside it on my 8G laptop, so in that sense it was a result!

  I am new in Ubuntu and I had a big trouble with wifi. My ubuntu 12.10 doesn't detect my wifi card and I can't toggle the "activate wireless" option on the tasks bar (it is grey). I searched for drivers to make it work, but nothing worked for me. Can anyone give me a hand? • LaTeX printing only first two pages of a document

  I am working in LaTeX, and when I create a pdf file (using LaTeX button or pdfLaTeX button or using yap) the pdf has only the first two pages. No errors. It just stops. If I make the first page longer by adding text, it still stops at end of 2nd page. Any ideas? • Cannot enable network discovery on Windows Server 2008 R2

  I'm trying to enable the Network Discovery feature on a newly installed Windows Server 2008 R2 instance. The network connection is in the Home or Work profile (it is not domain joined). These are the steps I've followed: Within the Network and Sharing Center I select Change advanced sharing settings Then I select the Turn on network discovery option for the current network profile (Home or Work) I then click Save changes If I then go back to the Advanced sharing settings screen the Turn off network discovery option is selected and the machine is not visible to others within the Network node in Windows Explorer. Things I've checked: I can ping the server and connect to it using the machine name/IP address. The Windows Firewall has exceptions for Network Discovery for both Private and Public networks. File and Printer sharing is enabled and I can transfer files to/from the server by connecting to the server using a UNC path. What am I missing here?

• Wix, Launch application after installation complete, with UAC turned on.

  Good day. I've been building an installer for our product using the WIX(Windows Installer XML) technology. The expected behavior is that the product is launched, if the check box is checked after installation. This has been working for some time now, but we found out recently that UAC of Win 7, and Vista is stopping the application from launching. I've done some research and it has been suggested to me that I should add the attributes Execute='deferred' and Impersonate='no'. Which I did, but then found out that to execute deferred, the CustomAction has to be performed, between the InstallInitialize, and IntallFinalize phases; which is not what I need. I need the product to launch AFTER install finalize, IF the launch checkbox is checked. Is there any other way to elevate permissions?   This evening I tried to rdp into my server 2008 box and was unable to. After poking around some I discovered that something is awry with my Windows Firewall. I did install 5 windows updates remotely earlier today but rolled those back in an attempt to see if that fixed the problem but had no luck. Symptoms: cannot rdp to machine (including from itself) cannot ping machine cannot connect to file share on machine error message when attempting to open "windows firewall with advanced security" snap-in (there was an error opening the windows firewall with advanced security snap-in ... The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in failed to load. Restart the windows firewall service on the computer that you are managing. Error code: 0x6D9. When I opened the "user-friendly" Windows Firewall it failed to load most of the gui elements, meaning, the title bar with close, minimize, and maximize buttons is present, the rest of the window has a white background with a yellow rectangle with rounded corners and a yellow triangle w/ an exclamation point is in the upper right. hope that made sense "Windows Firewall" does not appear in the list of services I ran a virus scan that found nothing. How do I fix the firewall and hopefully restore the ability to rdp? EDIT2: I ran sfc /scannow and i found about 100 occurrences of "[SR] Cannot repair member file"... including several related to the firewall (ex: [l:32{16}]"Firewall.cpl.mui" of Networking-MPSSVC.Resources...). One of them mentioned wordpad.exe, which I tried to open, and it failed. I found here mentions of mounting the install.wim on the install media to copy the affected files over. I am downloading the appropriate AIK and will continue tomorrow evening.

  I trying to deploy the latest Java RE version via GP, Java 7 update 9. I want to update computers that are currently running an older version of Java, a mixture of 7.6 and 7.7, some computers are running versions as old as 6.31. Some are running a mixture of both. I would also like this GP to install Java if it's not installed. Previously I used push out Java updates to users machines as Java didn't remove the old version. So when it was done the user would restart their browser or pc to start using the latest version. Not the best way to manage it as it leaves the old version installed but it worked. I've created group policies before for printer deployment, log on drive mapping scripts, but never software deployment. I've extracted the Java MSI and created a transform file to suppress reboot etc using orca. As described on this site http://ivan.dretvic.com/2011/06/how-to-package-and-deploy-java-jre-1-6-0_26-via-group-policy/. I have also tried saving the edited MSI directly and that didn't work either. But it just won't deploy. I have tried to enable logging as suggested on this site http://openofficetechnology.com/node/32, GPO logging via UserEnvDebugLevel, Software deployment logging via AppmgmtDebugLevel and MSI logging, but there is no log C:\Windows\Debug\UserMode\userenv.log being created. • XAMPP vs WAMP security and other on Windows XP

  Not long ago I found WAMP and thought it was a God send because it had all the things I wanted/needed (Apache, PHP, MySQL, and phpMyAdmin) all built into one installer. One thing about WAMP has been making me mad is an error I get in phpMyAdmin about the advanced features not working. I have tried to fix that error long enough on that error for long enough. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2688385/problem-with-phpmyadmin-advanced-features I now read that most people prefer XAMPP over WAMP, but I am a bit concerned that XAMPP might have some extra security holes with Mercury and Perl, two thing that I don't really need or want right now. Are my security concerns justified or not? Is there any other reasons to go with XAMPP over WAMP or vice versa?

  Hello, I've installed full version (not RC nor Beta) of Visual Studio 2010, a then setup within Web Platform Installer 2.0 announce me that I need to install MVC 2.0, so i did it. When I want to create project "MvcWebApplicationProjectTemplate" in VS I have following message: error: this template attempted to load component assembly 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Web.Mvc.2.0, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35'. For more information on this problem and how to enable this template, please see documentation on Customizing Project Templates. Any idea how to fix it?   I need to read the location of the Temporary ASP.NET Files folder from VBScript as part of a post-installation task in an installer created using a Visual Studio 2008 deployment project. I thought I would do something like this: Set oShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") strPath = oShell.RegRead("HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ASP.NET\2.0.50727.0\Path") and then concatenate strPath with "\Temporary ASP.NET Files" and be done with it. On an x64 system, however, I am getting the value from the WOW6432Node (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\ASP.NET\2.0.50727.0), which gives me the 32-bit framework path (C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727), but on an x64 system, I actually want the 64-bit path, i.e. C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727. I understand that this happens because the .vbs file is run using the 32-bit script host due to the parent process (the installer) being 32-bit itself. How can I run the script using the 64-bit script host - or - how can I read the 64-bit values even if the script is run using the 32-bit script host?

• XBMC launching external applications full screen

  Running xbmc-standalone (Eden) on Ubuntu server edition 12.04 (no gnome/kde/etc...). When launching another application via 'advanced launcher' or other launcher add-on XBMC goes into a 'windowed mode' and the app shows up in a 'windowed' mode. The XBMC and app windows are cascaded and most of the screen is unused. This is obviously not what i'd like. I'd like the app to launch full screen. ideas? Other info: - using lightdm - tried with 'Rom Browser' - tried with 'Advanced Launcher' - once app had launched, tried to 'toggle full screen' in app, but with no success

  I am attempting to author a merge module for use by multiple application installers to install a Win32 Shared SxS Assembly and its associated Policy. I'm using WiX 3.0 to generate the MSM and test MSIs. So far it works fine for the first app installer that runs … but the second app installer fails because the Policy file already exists (HRESULT: 0x800700B7). What requirement(s) for correct Win32 Shared SxS Policy installation am I missing? I have submitted WiX bug 3005301 for this (https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=642714&aid=3005301&group_id=105970) and posted VS2008 projects that reproduce the problem.   I have had my Outlook 2007 open additional mailboxes via the advanced account settings. After updating to Office SP2, the list of emails in the additional account still displays, but I get a message for each mailbox item: This item cannot be displayed in the Reading Pane. Open the item to read its contents. After double clicking the message, I get a small error box which displays just Cannot open this item. Unknown Error. Also, if I try to re-add the mailbox in the Advanced tab of my account settings, I get an error message The name cannot be resolved. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action. However, the status bar indicates Online with Microsoft Exchange, and I can both send and receive emails from my primary account. What could be going wrong?

  I'm making an installer program for my web application. My web application uses CSS and JS heavily, so I want to enable both Static and Dynamic HttpCompression for IIS7/7.5. It needs 2 steps: I can modified the web.config, put <httpcompression> tag, it's ok. DynamicContentCompression must be turned on in Windows Feature to make httpCompression work. Static HttpCompression is enable by default in IIS7 and IIS7.5, but Dynamic HttpCompression is not enable by default (although it's available). I can do manually by turn on: Start/ControlPanel/ProgramsAndFeatures/TurnWindowsFeatures on or Off/IIS/WWW Service/Performance features/Dynamic Content Compression, but How can I programmatically turn it on that Windows Feature? I can use PowerShell, C# in my installer. Any idea how I might be able to do this? Thanks.

• .NET Framework 4 RTM on Windows server 2008 R2

  I've just installed .NET 4 on Windows SErver 2008 R2 x64 and I am getting 500 Internal Server Error with an ASP.NET MVC application which was previously running fine on 3.5. The application was upgraded from targeting 3.5 to target 4 and I personally built it today on my development machine (changed in VS - Properties to .NET Framework 4). On the server I installed .NET Framework 4 Client profile and Full both automatically through the Web Platform Installer. ASP.NET MVC 2 was also installed through Platform Installer. I created a new .NET 4 application pool in IIS and placed the web app in it. Also I have custom errors turned Off in web.config but even so no detailed error is displayed - just the plain IIS 7.5 500 Internal Server Error. Any suggestions?
