  • Package problems after upgrade

    - by Dan
    I installed a new upgrade on ubuntu which seemed to fail near the end. Now I'm being told that an error has occurred and to please run apt-get to see what's wrong. After some further tries with that I eventually gave up. It seems there's a left over latex package(?) somewhere and I can't seem to get rid of or fix it. Here's an example: blank@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these. The following packages have unmet dependencies: tex-common : Breaks: texlive-common (< 2010) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-base : Depends: texlive-binaries (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-11ubuntu2 is installed Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-doc-base : Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-extra-utils : Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed Depends: texlive-binaries (>= 2012-0) but 2009-11ubuntu2 is installed texlive-font-utils : Depends: texlive-binaries (>= 2012-0) but 2009-11ubuntu2 is installed Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-generic-recommended : Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-latex-base : Depends: texlive-binaries (>= 2012-0) but 2009-11ubuntu2 is installed Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-latex-base-doc : Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-latex-extra : Depends: texlive-binaries (>= 2012-0) but 2009-11ubuntu2 is installed Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-latex-extra-doc : Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-latex-recommended : Depends: texlive-binaries (>= 2012-0) but 2009-11ubuntu2 is installed Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-latex-recommended-doc : Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-luatex : Depends: texlive-binaries (>= 2012-0) but 2009-11ubuntu2 is installed Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-pictures : Depends: texlive-binaries (>= 2012-0) but 2009-11ubuntu2 is installed Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-pictures-doc : Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-pstricks : Depends: texlive-binaries (>= 2012-0) but 2009-11ubuntu2 is installed Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed texlive-pstricks-doc : Depends: texlive-common (>= 2012.20120516) but 2009-15 is installed zlib1g : Breaks: texlive-binaries (< 2009-12) but 2009-11ubuntu2 is installed zlib1g:i386 : Breaks: texlive-binaries (< 2009-12) but 2009-11ubuntu2 is installed E: Unmet dependencies.   • ProFTPd not in boot: Debian

    - by 50ndr33
I just configured my new VPS with Apache, PHP, MySQL and ProFTPd. I wanted to install a smtp server, but I was advised to do a apt-get upgrade first. I did this, and I got up a blue screen where I could choose between two alternatives. It said something about GRUB 2 installer. I chose the alternative that was already selected, the topmost. I chose not to update the GRUB2, and use the old one that was installed. Now, ProFTPd doesn't start in boot anymore. I have to /etc/init.d/proftpd start every time. How do I fix this? Should I have chosen to update GRUB2? Should I do apt-get upgrade again and try to do the same GRUB2 installer again?

  • pyexiv2 build error src/exiv2wrapper.hpp:32:29: error: exiv2/preview.hpp: No such file or directory

    - by Jake
The other day I used apt-get install python-pyexiv2 on my ubuntu server, but it seems to have given me an old version. It's not compatible with the code I wrote in my local development environment so I'd like to update it. I downloaded the latest tar.gz from the website, extracted it and ran scons as per the readme. But it will not build, I get the error src/exiv2wrapper.hpp:32:29: error: exiv2/preview.hpp: No such file or directory I've also user apt-get to install libboost-python-dev and libexiv2-dev Can anyone help me on this?

  • Can't install software from Ubuntu software center

    - by Casbar
I've been experimenting with Ubuntu 10.04(64bit) inside a VirtualBox VM. This isn't my first experience with Linux, but I'm still very much a Linux noob. Whenever I try to install software from the Ubuntu Software Center, the installation gets interrupted and I get a warning that this installation requires untrusted sources. I can install anything I want using apt-get, it's just the gui that doesn't work. I've done research on the issue and taken the following precautions with no result: under software sources Allowed Canonical partners Allowed source code Changed the download source to main server I get no errors when running an apt-get update. Can anyone shed some light on the issue?

  • Own website fails to load first time

    - by AmazingDreams
I have a website running on a VPS, every time I first try to load the website the connection times out. If I press try again, it loads directly. I'm not sure whether this is a DNS issue or a server issue. As far as I know everything is set up correctly. Also, it has been doing this from the moment I got this server and set up my domain name. And that's about two to three months ago. You may take a look here: http://www.wegotcha.nl/ As you can see at this moment it's just an image, there are no scripts running in the background or anything. The only error Apache gives me is that favicon.ico cannot be found. It's an Apache webserver running on Ubuntu 12.04.1 (newest version) I update all packages almost every day (apt-get update && apt-get upgrade). I am merely an amateur on the area of webservers so any help will be appreciated. :)

  • Install newer version of GCC in Knoppix

    - by Z boson
I have Knoppix 7.30 installed on a USB with a persistent file. It comes with GCC 4.7.2. I would like to install GCC 4.9.x or 4.8.x. Being that Knopppix is based on Debian I would normally do something like apt-get upgrade But as far as I understand it's not recommended to do this with Knoppix. Warning: apt-get upgrade is a BAD IDEA. It will, quite probably, render your KNOPPIX remaster unbootable, or broken in some way. A far safer method is to only upgrade packages as necessary. I can say from experience that that is the cse. So how should I go about installing GCC 4.9? Another option would be to "remaster" knoppix to use GCC 4.9 by default rather than install it with a persistent file. I would be happy with either solution.

  • Upgrading phpmyadmin (and other packages) on Debian Squeeze

    - by westexasman
I just setup a new VM with Debian Squeeze (latest stable release, 6.0.4). I am going for a webserver, so I installed the usual... apache, php5, mysql, phpmyadmin, etc. Everything went well, everything is working. My question is about upgrading packages. I noticed the phpmyadmin version is 3.3.7... the latest is 3.4.10.1. Doing apt-get update/upgrade does not upgrade the package. How does one go about upgrading packages on a Debian Squeeze server if apt-get update/upgrade does not work? Thanks!

  • Installing maven on Ubuntu by manual download

    - by WebDevHobo
To install Maven, I downloaded the latest version from the website and then followed these steps: http://maven.apache.org/download.html#Installation The last step, the version control, does not work. It says that 'mvn' is currently not installed and that I should type sudo apt-get install maven2 If I go directly to the mvn file itself, it does work: root@ubuntu:~# /usr/local/apache-maven/apache-maven-2.2.1/bin/mvn --version Apache Maven 2.2.1 (r801777; 2009-08-06 12:16:01-0700) Java version: 1.6.0_21 Java home: /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_21/jre Default locale: en_US, platform encoding: UTF-8 OS name: "linux" version: "2.6.32-25-generic" arch: "i386" Family: "unix" So, what am I doing wrong here? Or what would and apt-get install do extra that I might have forgotten?

  • How to tell from what Ubuntu or Debian repository a package comes?

    - by gotgenes
On a Debian-based system, including Ubuntu, how can one tell which repository a package will be downloaded from, without actually beginning the download? aptitude show and apt-cache info will show the section (e.g., metapackage, base, graphics), but not the repository to which a package belongs (e.g., http://ppa.launchpad.net/mactel-support/ppa/ubuntu or http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/). When installing the package, the actual repository appears during the download (it is printed out in the "downloading from ..." output from apt and similar programs), but how can one obtain information on the repository containing the package (or a specific version of a package) without downloading and installing it first? Additionally, how can one determine the source repository for a package that is already installed?

  • Listing packages in a repositiory?

    - by noloader
I'm working on Ubuntu 12.04 Server. I want to install OpenStack, so I enabled the Cloud Archive repo: sudo add-apt-repository cloud-archive:havana After the subsequent update and upgrade, I noticed python-crypto changed. python-crypto recently fixed a CVE, so I would like to ensure I'm using the patched version of python-crypto. I'd also like to compare the python-crypto in both Ubuntu and Cloud Archive. How does one list the package information for both Ubuntu::python-crypto and CloudArchive::python-crypto? (And sorry I could not tag this with apt-cache. Its not available in the list of tags). Thanks in advance

  • Best practice for administering a (hadoop) cluster

    - by Alex
Dear all, I've recently been playing with Hadoop. I have a six node cluster up and running - with HDFS, and having run a number of MapRed jobs. So far, so good. However I'm now looking to do this more systematically and with a larger number of nodes. Our base system is Ubuntu and the current setup has been administered using apt (to install the correct java runtime) and ssh/scp (to propagate out the various conf files). This is clearly not scalable over time. Does anyone have any experience of good systems for administering (possibly slightly heterogenous: different disk sizes, different numbers of cpus on each node) hadoop clusters automagically? I would consider diskless boot - but imagine that with a large cluster, getting the cluster up and running might be bottle-necked on the machine serving the OS. Or some form of distributed debian apt to keep the machines native environment synchronised? And how do people successfully manage the conf files over a number of (potentially heterogenous) machines? Thanks very much in advance, Alex

  • How to maintain VPS server?

    - by clorz
Assuming I have no experience in running them, what would be called a good maintenance routine for a VPS server running mail server and LAMP with a couple of sites. I've got one for quite a while now, but was doing what I feel is right without any guidance. It's ubuntu server and the only thing I do is ssh in there once a month and apt-get update, apt-get upgrade. Last year it suggested to update the distro, which I did. Waded through a bunch of diffs, broke mail server in the process and fixed it later on. So it turned out fine. Was this a right thing to do or should I stick with the old version just updating the packages? Is there a difference in the routine if it will be Fedora?

  • How to install php cli with pnctl alongside Zend Server

    - by fazy
I have Zend Server CE 5.6 with PHP 5.2 running on Ubuntu 11.10. Now the need has arisen to run a command line PHP script that uses PHP's pnctl functionality. First of all, I had no PHP command line in my path, so I made a symlink from the Zend one: sudo ln -s /usr/local/zend/bin/php /usr/bin However, when I run my script, I now get this error: PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function pcntl_fork() The Zend web control panel doesn't offer pnctl in the list of modules, so how do I get this functionality? Is it safe to use apt-get to install PHP directly, to run alongside the Zend instance? If so, how do I make sure I get version 5.2? I guess the following would pull in PHP 5.3: apt-get php5-cli I could probably muddle through but any pointers to help me avoid making a mess would be much appreciated!

  • xf86OpenConsole: Cannot find a free VT: Invalid argument

    - by Oliver Seeliger
I'v set up an Ubuntu 12.04 from the precreated OpenVZ template. The host system is configured as follows: # $ cat /etc/issue Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 # $ uname -a Linux openvz-02 2.6.32-16-pve #1 SMP Fri Nov 9 11:42:51 CET 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux # $ apt-cache showpkg proxmox-ve-2.6.32 Package: proxmox-ve-2.6.32 # $ tail -n 3 /etc/apt/sources.list # PVE packages provided by proxmox.com deb http://download.proxmox.com/debian squeeze pve For a software project I need a minimal xserver and followed the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ServerGUI. I simply installed the package xorg (xorg 1:7.6+7ubuntu7.1). Now when I 'startx' I get an error message Fatal server error: xf86OpenConsole: Cannot find a free VT: Invalid argument The complete output of startx # startx X.Org X Server 1.11.3 Release Date: 2011-12-16 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.42-23-generic x86_64 Ubuntu Current Operating System: Linux www 2.6.32-16-pve #1 SMP Fri Nov 9 11:42:51 CET 2012 x86_64 Kernel command line: quiet Build Date: 29 August 2012 12:12:33AM xorg-server 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.8 (For technical support please see http://www.ubuntu.com/support) Current version of pixman: 0.24.4 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. • Tomcat6 Manager Webapp returns a 404

    - by Noel
    http://localhost:8080/manager/html gives a 404 error on apt-get install of tomcat6 (6.0.28 on JVM 1.6.0_20-b20 on 2.6.35-27-generic amd64). http://localhost:8080/host-manager/html works. Lists one Host name, localhost. Installed tomcat6-admin with apt-get. ls dpkg -l | grep -i tomcat6-admin ii tomcat6-admin 6.0.28-2ubuntu1.1 Servlet and JSP engine -- admin web applications $ cat /usr/share/tomcat6/conf/tomcat-users.xml <tomcat-users> <role rolename="admin"/> <role rolename="manager" /> <user username="tomcatuser" password="Password1" roles="admin,manager"/> </tomcat-users> cat /usr/share/tomcat6/conf/Catalina/localhost/manager.xml <Context path="/manager" docBase="/usr/share/tomcat6-admin/manager" antiResourceLocking="false" privileged="true" /> <role name="manager" /> <user name="manager" password="Password1" roles="manager" /> <user name="tomcatuser" password="Password1" roles="manager" /> Those two files are the only documentation I've seen on how to setup the Manager webapp, and they seem to be compliant with the requirements.
