  • New SSD, is the MBR broken? DISK BOOT FAILURE

    I've been running Windows 7 on a WD 500gb SATA single drive, single partition setup for some time with no issues. I've just installed a new Kingston V Series 64gb SSD and performed a clean install of Win7 to it, deleting the partitions on the 500gb and using that as a data drive. All was well for a few reboots but then I started to get "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" messages. If I put the Win7 install DVD back in the drive it boots fine. Tried a clean install again, after replacing SATA cables and swapping SATA ports, with a complete partition wipe of both drives. Again, rebooted fine a few times then back with the "DISK BOOT FAILURE" error. Looked on the web and found some discussions about it so I then started from scratch again. This time I wiped the MBR on both drives using MBRWork, disconnected the 500gb and reinstalled to the SSD. Removed the install DVD and installed all the drivers which involved many reboots, all with no problem. To make sure I also did a few cold boots as well. Reconnected the 500gb, initialised, partitioned and formatted it. Copied data to it and did some more reboots and shutdowns. All was ok. Then out of the blue comes another "DISK BOOT FAILURE" and again, if the Win7 install DVD is in the drive it boots fine. So, is the SSD a bad'un? TIA UPDATE: It was a BIOS issue! I found a hidden away option for HDD boot order, which was separate from the usual HDD/CDRom/FDD boot order option. The WD was set to boot before the SSD... Swapped them round and all is well.   • How to chain GRUB2 for Ubuntu 10.04 from Truecrypt & its bootloader (multi boot alongside Windows XP partition)?

    I want Truecrypt to ask for password for Windows XP as usual but with the standard [ESC] option, on selecting that, i.e via Escape key, I want it to find the grub for the (unencrypted) Ubuntu install. I've installed Windows XP on the 120Gb hard drive of a Toshiba NB100 netbook then partitioned to make room for Ubuntu 10.04 and installed that after the Windows XP install. When I encrypt Windows XP, Truecrypt will overwrite the grub entry in the master boot record (MBR), I believe (?) and I won't be able to choose between XP and Ubuntu anymore. So I need to restore it back. I've searched fairly extensively for answers on Ubuntu forums and elsewhere but have not yet found a complete answer that covers all eventualities, scenarios and error messages, or otherwise they talk of legacy GRUB and not GRUB2. Ubuntu 10.04 uses GRUB2. My setup: Partitions: Windows XP, NTFS (to be encrypted with Truecrypt), 40Gb /boot (Ext4, 1Gb) Ubuntu swap, 4Gb Ubuntu / (root) - main filesystem (20gb) NTFS share, 55Gb I know that the Truecrypt boot loader replaces the GRUB when boot up because I've already tried it on another laptop. I want boot loader screen to look something like the usual: Truecrypt Enter password: (or [ESC] to skip) password is for WindowsXP and on pressing [ESC] for it to find the Ubuntu grub to boot from Thanks in advance for your help. The key area of the problem is how to instruct Truecrypt when escape key is pressed, and how the Grub/Ubuntu can be made visible to the truecrypt bootloader to find it, when the esc key is pressed.   • Screen Casting using ffmpeg (too fast)

    I can use ffmpeg to make screen casts: ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 1280x800 -i :0.0 -c:v libx264 -framerate 30 -r 30 -crf 18 out.mkv However the output comes out to be too fast paced. It also happens with GTK RecordMyDesktop if I enable the encode on the fly. So, the questions is how to get a normal video pace. Also in order to capture the sound with ffmpeg what option should be used?   • Enable Full Screen Mode in Media Center Without Trapping the Mouse

    If you have a dual monitor setup and use Windows Media Center, you’re probably aware that when WMC is in full screen mode, it traps the mouse so you can’t work on a second monitor. Here we look at how to solve the annoyance. The Maxifier is an application that allows you to open Media Center in full screen mode without restricting the mouse. It relieves the annoyance of WMC capturing your mouse on a dual monitor setup. Note: If you don’t have two monitors attached, most of The Maxifier’s functions won’t work. Installation and Use Download, extract, and install The Maxifier. (See the download link below) The Maxifier runs minimized in the system tray and you access the options by right-clicking on the icon. If Media Center is not already open, you can choose Start Media Center to start WMC on the main start screen. Or, choose one of the other selections to open another area of Media Center. By default, Maxifier opens Media Center in full screen mode on the secondary monitor. When Media Center is open in full screen mode, you’ll notice you can now freely move your mouse around your multi-monitor setup. When Media Center is open, you’ll see five additional options. The Fit Screen options simply fits Media Center to the full screen, but still show the Windows borders. Full screen options put WMC in full screen mode.   The Maxifier Options allow you to choose from the various start up options. Selecting Watch for Media Center starting will prompt Maxifier to open WMC to the main start page in full screen mode on the secondary monitor automatically, even if you open Media Center without using The Maxifier.  (You may need to restart for this to take effect) If you have more than 2 monitors, you can define on which monitor to open Media Center, and which monitor you consider to be the main screen.   You can also define a number of Hotkeys in The Maxifier settings. First, select the Enable Hotkeys checkbox. To create a Hotkey, click in the text field and then press the keys to use as the Hotkey. To remove a Hotkey, click in the field and press the Delete key.   Conclusion The Maxifier is a simple program that enables Media Center users to take full advantage of a multi-monitor workspace.   • When gaming computer freezes with a blank screen and a buzzing sound

    I have a problem with random freezes when playing games. Sometimes it's fine for hours, other times it dosn't last even one. I tried googling around and I found recomendations to update my graphics drivers and to test for overheating. The graphics drivers haven't helped worked and Furmark created a consistant heat higher than I get during a crash. I even tried running a game using the Linux dual boot and WINE, that crashed too. Here are the tempreture logs leading up to the latest crash. The GPU dosn't hit 80, and I've hit 90 with no crash on firmark.   • How do I get the F1-F12 keys to switch screens in gnu screen in cygwin when connecting via SSH?

    I'm connecting to a desktop running cygwin via SSH from the terminal app in Mac OS X. I have already started screen on the cygwin side and can connect to it over the SSH session. I have tried various settings for $TERM (e.g. ansi, cygwin, xterm-color, vt100) and they don't really seem to affect anything. I have verified that the terminal app is in fact sending the escape sequence for the function key that I'm expecting and that my bash shell (running inside screen) is receiving it. For example, for F1, it sends the following (hexdump is a perl script I wrote that takes STDIN in binmode and outputs it as a hexadecimal/ascii dump): % hexdump [press F1 and then hit ^D to terminate input] 00000000: 1b4f50 .OP If things were working correctly, I don't think bash should receive the escape sequence because screen should have caught it and turned it into a command. How do I get the function keys to work?

    Hi, Just i come across one application.When i load that application,the actual applcation is like toolbar only.Its get loaded in the top of the screen.And the desktop items automatically get moved and displayed below toolbar.Even when i open any other window and maximized the windoe,its get maximized below toolbar only.The screen co ordinates changed to new size. If before the screen size as (0,0,800,600),after this applcation loading it changed to (0,100,800,600). When i exit the application the screen changed to original position and all desktop items get arranged to original positiom. Hows it possible? Can i do that in MFC.

I am able to unlock the screen using newKeyguardLock = km.newKeyguardLock(HANDSFREE); newKeyguardLock.disableKeyguard(); on KeyGuardService but I cannot turn on the screen. I am using wl = pm.newWakeLock(PowerManager.SCREEN_BRIGHT_WAKE_LOCK, HANDSFREE); wl.acquire(); but with no success. The screen still remains off. How can I achieve this? Thanks in advance. The robots.txt file of the website says that its webpages must not be scraped. So my question is whether selling that screen scraper is a crime or using that screen scraper is a crime in legal terms.     Hello, Im using KUbuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx). I have installed zsh and screen. I have set zsh as the default shell, by setting Command to zsh in Settings-Edit Current Profile of the terminal. But,when i launch screen,the bash shell is loaded. If i run the command zsh, then zsh starts but the following message is displayed: "/home/joel/.zshrc:36: Can't add module parameter `mapfile': parameter already exists" Also,zsh is invoked for only the current screen instance and i have to invoke it manually again for other instances. So,is there any way to make screen load zsh by default and invoke it automatically for every instance ? Thank You

    Short Version of the question: I will put a quad. I know the width and height of the screen in window coordinates, i know the Z-coordinates of the quad in 3D. I know the FOVY, I know the aspect. The quad will be put along Z-axis, My camera doesn't move (placed at 0, 0, 0). I want to find out the width and height of the quad IN 3D COORDINATES that will fit exactly onto my screen. Long Version of the question: I would like to put a quad along the Z-axis at the specified offset Z, I would like to find out the width and height of the quad that will exactly fill the entire screen. I used to have a post on gamedev.net that uses a formula similar to the following: *dist = Z * tan ( FOV / 2 )* Now I can never find the post! Though it's similar, it is still different, because I remembered in that working formula, they do make use of screenWidth and screenHeight, which are the width and height of the screen in window coordinates. I am not really familiar with concepts like frustum, fov and aspect so that's why I can't work out the formula on my own.     Hi, I have a "basic" license agreement screen for now, a Screen with a title set and vertical field containing a textfield, separatorfield and then 2 buttons (accept or decline). The license is pretty long, it's annoying going all the way down (except with the storm it's pretty easy) and I want a kind of popup screen showing the license and the 2 buttons at the bottom. To give you an example, the exact SAME as the Facebook or App World application's license screen agreement! When you scroll the text, it's going a lot faster and it's visualy great. Thank you!

    I am having problems with my display. The problem manifests as lots of screen artefacts, which seem to be worse in Unity than in Gnome 3, are worse after i have used suspend and are intolerable if i set myself up on a dual monitor. Specific issues include: icons disappearing, lines occurring all over the screen, the backgrounds of certain windows going another colour and window borders disappearing or being filled with text from other parts of the screen. The most annoying problem is lines of text disappearing from a host of word processing programmes (libreoffice, gedit, bluefish etc), as i type. In most circumstances the screen problem can be temporarily fixed (so that i can see the screen clearly) by either scrolling the text off the screen and then scrolling it back onto the screen, or highlighting the offending area of the desktop, by clicking and dragging. Errors on parts of the screen that don't seem to redraw (window borders (off the universal menu) or the screen area outside of a LO document, in print layout view, for example) can't seem to be fixed in a session.   • Inconsistent booting problem 12.04LTS on Asus U46E RAL7

    The laptop is dual booting with windows 7 and ubuntu 11.10. For 11.10 to boot, I had to add 'nolapic' in GRUB boot options. I downloaded 12.04LTS LiveCD yesterday and made a CD and a bootable USB stick. With both USB and LiveCD, occasionally I can boot into 12.04. But many times, the boot process stuck at some point. For USB boot, sometime it works. But other times, it seems to stuck right after seeing the message: NMI watchdog enabled. takes one hw-pmu counted [0.408590] #2 The number in [] changes. Some times it stuck at #2, and sometimes at #3. For LiveCD boot, sometime it works. But when it stuck, it stuck at different places. At times, the boot process go directly to a blank screen with a blink '_' at up left corner. Sometime it went a bit further, after showing options to try/install ubuntu then stuck with a blank screen with blink '_'. Anything I can do to get around of this?

  • Botting from a stick drive

    Am trying to boot from a usb stick. Have carefully followed the instructions at the following link and successfully downloaded and installed version Ubuntu 12.04 desk top: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows I used the Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.2 as instructed and choose the "Ubuntu 12.04 desk top" option, after downloading the respective iso/zip file onto my Dell laptop from the Ubuntu site. Also modified my bios to select the usb first as boot drive instead of hard drive. Also, turned off bit blocker on my laptop and usb stick. Usb stick has the setting of "Automatically unlock this drive on this computer". When i reboot my laptop, it first boots into a black screen (i assume is the bios), but prompts saying "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to start". I press any key and regardless the laptop boots up to windows. Hence, it appears that the boot process is checking the USB first before going to the hard drive to look for it's boot disk and starting Windows 7. Is it that the USB stick is not correctly configured with Ubuntu as a boot disk? Is there anything else that i need to do besides the instructions at the following link? http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows How can I ensure that USB boot stick is configured correctly? After running the Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.0.2 to "install" Ubuntu, is there additional configuration/installation steps? What is the first file that the bios would look for on this USB drive? Is this configured somewhere in the bios, or would it just look for an grub file or /boot dir? The only message i get when booting is "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to start". Any and all help would be much appreciated.. Thanks ... :)

  • My computer will not reboot after fresh install of ubuntu 12.04LTS

    I bought a new computer yesterday and it came with Windows 8. When installing Ubuntu, i choose the erase and install option thinking that Ubuntu would install easily like it did for my old laptop... After a successful install and following the instructions telling me to reboot to finish installation and remove installation media. It worked and my computer booted fine, however once I began installing updates via update manager and activating additional driver {ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates)} out of the following: Experimental AMD binary Xorg driver and kernel module ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (*experimental*beta) ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates) Then reboot to finish making changes I reboot and get an error (Reboot and select proper boot device) At this point I was stuck, so I eventually reinstalled ubuntu and repeated the exacted same steps until right before i rebooted to finish making changes. However this time i used this Boot Repair tool sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair boot-repair After running the program i get a "boot successfully repaired" message. Then I try to reboot again and get the GNU Grub screen where it says would you like to boot: normal recovery memorytest Once it begins loading, you see the code moving across the screen then it pauses when it gets to and doesnt do anything. If someone could tell me how to fix this or get Windows 8 back soon, I'd appreciate it because like i said i just bought it yesterday and now i cant even use it.
