• I can't get a native resolution of 1920x1080 on 11.10 (AOC f22 on a Nvidia Geforce GTS 450)

  I have a problem were the highest resolution I can get is 1360x769, this is a 22 inch LCD monitor with a native resolution of 1920x1080_60 I have tried numerous drivers but nothing changed I tried editing the xorg.conf scipt with no success (I am a noob with linux though). Running many commands in terminal witch I got from people with similar problems only gives me errors like "Failed to get size of gamma for output default. I get edid checksum is invalid error on boot down also. I think there maybe a communication problem between my screens EDID and ubuntu although xp and windows 7 detect my screen without any errors and automatically set native resolution. also when I am installing ubuntu I get a horrible screen flashing every few seconds until I have installed the nvidia driver. pc specks if it helps x64 os, mainboard N68PV-GS, 4 gig ram, AMD Phenom(tm) 9350e Quad-Core Processor × 4, Nvidia Geforce gts450 512mb, hard drives set up in a onboard nvidia raid array striped. realy need to get a better resolution, 1360x769 does not look nice on a 22 inch screen. ty

• Elantech trackpad being identified as a logitech wheel mouse

  I recently purchased a Samsung RF510 laptop computer, which I absolutely love. However, upon installing Ubuntu 10.10 onto it I couldn't get the trackpad to function properly. It worked as a basic mouse (point and click) but had no functionality for edge scrolling or any of the multitouch settings the trackpad is capable of. After doing a lot of research I discovered the reason is a known issue where the Ubuntu kernel will improperly detect an Elantech trackpad as a logitech PS/2 wheel mouse, and as such will gain none of the functionality that seems to be coded for synaptics trackpads. The question I have is: does anyone know a way to get this working properly? This is my first time trying to run Ubuntu on a laptop (actually, it's my first laptop in the last 12 years) and I'm finding the experience to be intolerable without the basic scrolling/zooming/etc I've been used to using for as long as I can remember.

  I have an old CanoScan N640Pex flat bed scanner and a USB-to-parallel port cable through which I can connect it to my PC. Unfortunately neither Simple Scan nor XSane detect the scanner. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 (plus updates and backports) with kernel 3.2.0-31-generic. dmesg tells me this when I plus the cable in: [256411.641910] usb 7-1: new full-speed USB device number 10 using uhci_hcd [256411.872392] usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 10 if 0 alt 1 proto 2 vid 0x067B pid 0x2305 [256411.872417] usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp lsusb shows this device for my cable: Bus 007 Device 010: ID 067b:2305 Prolific Technology, Inc. I suspect I might need to change something in /etc/sane.d/canon_pp.conf, but I have no idea what to put for the ieee1284 line, since there is pretty much zero documentation for that parameter. So how can I get it to work?

• Detecting pixels in a rotated Texture2D in XNA?

  I know things similar to this have been posted, but I'm still trying to find a good solution... I'm drawing Texture2D objects on the ground in my game, and for Mouse-Over or targeting methods, I'm detecting whether or not the pixel in that Texture at the mouse position is Color.Transparent. This works perfectly when I do not rotate the texture, but I'd like to be able to rotate textures to add realism/variety. However, I either need to create a new Texture2D that is rotated at the correct angle so that I can detect its pixels, or I need to find some other method of detection... Any thoughts?

• How to re-enable tray icons for applications in ubuntu 13.10?

  Unfortunately in new Ubuntu 13.10 there is no Tray Icon and Whiteliting is removed. The older solutions are not works for me, e.g.: No such schema 'com.canonical.Unity.Panel' message answered when I try to use the gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "['all']" comand. How can I get tray icons back (for applications that put icon in tray like Truecrypt, Pidgin, Aqualung, gnome-system-monitor, gyache, and so many more...) in Unity ? The most annoying is that the user loses control over applications can not detect itself that it has no tray icon... (e.g.: gnome-system-monitor, truecrypt...) At least Aqalung send a message about unable to put icon on systray! Thanks

  My first post.  Working with Google Analytics (GA).  What an incredible tool this is for those that are wanting to know about their site traffic.  GA allows the user to drill down to the screen size of any mobile sources that came in contact with his site.  The user is even able to know region demographics of visitors and the types of browsers and languages being used.  This is a great tool to help determine your target audience and what direction of growth one may be needing to take.GA has Real-Time currently in beta but it already allows the user to see some information.  I can already detect that I am viewing my site from Louisville, KY and what page of my site is being accessed.  I highly recommend using GA for the sheer plethora of data available.

• Why don't we use browser detection and platform-specific CSS?

  Nowadays, the common phenomena is to develop a website for a browser and then corresponding apps for Android phones, iPhone, tablets and so on. Since all the platforms come with a browser, why aren't companies using CSS to accommodate them? Surely we can detect from the request which browser was used and from which platform the request came. Reading those values, why don't we just implement the corresponding CSS for different platforms. Like we do for IE, Chrome and Safari. This way we can use the platforms' browser capabilities and don't need to develop subsequent apps for a platform.

• Google search preview shows content not on the website

  My website google search entry is messed up. In the preview in google search results, I get things like cracks, serials, random ip addresses. I scanned all files and my computer for viruses and malware and could not find anything. I also tried to download and reupload all content from a friend's computer and still that content persists. I also scanned the source code of all files, but the content does not appear in any file. Google also does not detect any malware on the website, as seen in their webmaster tools. I have searched using the same keywords in other search engines such as bing and yahoo and the search results there are fine. I am quite clueless as to what the causes would be for this and what would be a possible remedy.

• Macbook 8.1 overheating

  I have a macbook 8.1 with ubuntu 12.04 installed. But my cpu is getting very hot. On Mac my CPU is 50-60°C warm. But on ubuntu my mac is getting very hot and is by about 60°C but with min 3000rpm instead of 2000 on mac and the fan is getting very loud with 4500rpm on ubuntu when im browsing (without flash) or doing something else. i set it to 3000rpm because it is not getting so noisy instead of 2000rpm minimum. But thats not that what im expected. What ive done: i installed lm-sensors to see the temperatures and started the sensors-detect i installed macfancld, jupiter, the newest drivers from x-updates and installed the i965-va-driver oh and i installed mesa - with the default version my sandbridge was displayed as unknown i added GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force drm.vblankoffdelay=1 pcie_aspm=force drm.vblankoffdelay=1 i915.semaphores=1 i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1" ive added rfkill block bluetooth to /etc/rc.local to switch of bluetooth by default on boot my mac is not as noisy as before but it is noisy and sometimes very hot i hope you can help me

• 12.04 Dell GX260 resolution for 82845G/GL will not go greater than 1024x768

  I am a newbie to Linux and have installed 12.04 on to an old Dell GX260, I was hoping that I could slowly extract myself from Microsoft - but unless I can fix this simplest of problems I am thinking that this version of Linux is not ready for me yet!! I have read various posts but none seem to match, I believe the driver is installed, but under displays the maximum allowed in the drop down box is 1024x768 (4:3) display is unknown and detect displays does nothing. I have loaded all updates available but still no fix. xrandr shows: VGA1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 60.0* 800x600 60.3 56.2 848x480 60.0 640x480 59.9 xrandr --addmode VGA1 1360x768 cannot find mode "1360x768" anything above 1024x768 can not be found, but then I could be doing this out of step!!

• 3d Collision Handling

  I have trouble while detecting collisions on my 3D-Game. I have set-up Rays, to detect collisions (Screenshot) and my main-rountine already analyzes them. But now there's the question what to do with that. One possibility would be, to move the player back to the last position, but that's dirty, and does not work if the player can walk in multiple directions (e.g. if the player runs along a wall). My question is, what to do with the collision data / or in which direction, by which amount move the player? I'm sure there is an algorithm for that (as for almost all is).

  I'm making a 2D platform game. Right now I'm just working on making a very generic Player class. I'm wondering if it would be more efficient/better practice to have an ActionListener within the Player class to detect collisions with Enemy objects (also have an ActionListener) or to handle all the collisions in the main world. Furthermore, I'm thinking ahead about how I will handle collisions with the platforms themselves. I've looked into the double boolean arrays to see which tiles players can go to and which they can't. I don't understand how to use this class and the player class at the same time. Thank you.

• Unable to boot from USB boot drive for AMD Athlon 64

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 13.04 ISO for AMD64 Athlon processor using USB drive (8GB). I did create a bootable USB using the USB installer from Win7 intel 32bit processor (followed steps from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows). This USB is unable to boot on my AMD64 bit processor. The bios is able to detect the USB and once I change the boot order to USB and save exit from bios, I get a message saying "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS CONTINUE" and unable to proceed further. However earlier to this I have successfully installed Ubuntu 13.04 on to my laptop which has Intel 32 bit core i5 processor with the same procedure but my desktop which has AMD64 is failing. I also tried to create the USB installer on my desktop which has the AMD64 bit processor and tried booting which also resulted in the same error. (My desktop currently has Win XP) Please help as I have run out of options. thanks, Nagarjun

• ubuntu 13.10 secondary monitor - doesn't redraw properly

  Hi I've just installed Ubuntu 13.10 on a Lenovo w350 and am having some issues with graphics driver. standard nouveau drivers work great on the laptop display but when I attach an external display it goes bad on the external monitor, seems it's not re-drawing properly. (Photo attached). I've tried other drivers but none of them detect the external monitor when connected.   Hello, One time I faced an issue where my customer is having an HTTP 500 internal server error while trying to access any SharePoint site. The problem appeared once he moved back and forth with inheriting/breaking inheritance of permissions over different levels in the site collection. "Security corruption in database" sounds very tough for a customer running a production portal with a backup that can make him lose around 3 weeks of valuable data. However, the solution tends not to be that hard, there's an stsadm command that help us detect the corruption and even delete the orphaned items causing the corruption. Follow these steps: a. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME                and it returned some orphaned items.            b. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME -deletecorruption                and it removed the orphaned items.   I am new to Ubuntu, recently I installed ubuntu 12.04 in Vm Player (Virtual Machine) on my Dell laptop having windows 7 ultimate 32 bit for just to check the security of my wireless network and want to crack the WiFi (WPA-PSK) password but in ubuntu it does not show the wireless network it shows the 2 arrow sign as i have not connect the ethernet cable to my laptop and connected through WiFi on my main OS (windows 7) but it shows the wired network and internet is working but it does not show wifi connection. On windows 7 WiFi is connected and showing the WiFi connection and working correctly.But my main motive is to crack the WiFi password as it can't detect WiFi network so what to do? • How to Automatically run two commands after login?

  I have these two commands that I need to manually run every time after login: autossh -M 2000 -N -f -q -D 127.0.0.1:7070 [email protected] and sudo mkdir /media/C sudo mount /dev/sda2 /media/C I'd like to make them automatically run every time I boot and login to my computer. I'm currently using 10.04LTS. BTW, I only vaguely know what init.d or runlevel mean. But I still prefer to know a command-line based way to achieve this, not a fancy GUI way. Also, the autossh will only succeed after Ubuntu automatically detect and connect to my network, so should we let it retry infinitely until successfully executed? Thank you!

  I am completely new to Ubuntu and now running into so many problems regarding my display. I will be so grateful to the community to help me out and keep me loving Ubuntu. When I run lspci | grep VGA I get the following output 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV380 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)] I am not sure if it means the driver is installed. Now the problem is I can not change the resolution like I can do in windows. I wanted to use dual monitor but it can not detect dual monitor. The monitor option in the preference shows 'Unknown' I tried to use a VGA switch for my ps3 and computer, but the computer is stuck with 1024x768 resolution.   I have a 1TB HDD with four Windows XP partitions and a 120GB HDD with 10.04. While working in Ubuntu, due to delay and failure to shutdown, I switched off the system. Next it failed to boot in Ubuntu and stopped at initramfs. After that, I tried to repair from the booting stage. By mistake instead of hdd no I used partition no. This damaged the Windows also. Then Windows XP was reloaded and is running. When I boot with 12.04, it is able to detect the 120GB HDD, but, it is unable to mount. I am unable to access the files. I would like to revive the disk and recover files. Would appreciate any help.

The code works fine, but when the bullet intersects with an asteroid, and that bullet passes through another asteroid, the code gives an assertion, and it says about it can't increment the iterator. (This talk became the basis for my paper on injecting errors for fun and profit.) In that talk (but not in the paper), I articulated 10 principles of RAS design, which I list for you here: Protect everything Correct where you can Detect where you can't Where protection not feasible (e.g., ALUs), duplicate and compare Report everything; never throw away RAS information Allow non-destructive inspection (logging/scrubbing) Allow non-destructive alteration (injection) (that is, only change the bits you want changed, and leave everything else as is) Allow observation of all the bits as they are (logging) Allow alteration of any particular bit or combination of bits (injection) Document everything Of course, it isn't always feasible to follow these rules completely all the time, but I put them out there as a starting point.

• How to determine if someone is accessing our database remotely?

  I own a content publishing website developed using CakePHP(tm) v 2.1.2 and 5.1.63 MySQL. It was developed by a freelance developer who kept remote access to the database which I wasn’t aware of. One day he accessed to the site and overwrote all the data. After the attack, my hosting provider disabled the remote access to our database and changed the password. But somehow he accessed the site database again and overwrote some information. We’ve managed to stop the attack second time by taking the site down immediately. But now we’re suspecting that he’ll attack again. What we could identified that he’s running a query and changing every information from the database in matter of a sec. Is there any possible way to detect the way he’s accessing our database without remote access or knowing our Cpanel password? Or to identify whether he has left something inside the site that granting him access to our database?
