  • Should I install an AV product on my domain controllers?

    Should I run a server-specific antivirus, regular antivirus, or no antivirus at all on my servers, particularly my Domain Controllers? Here's some background about why I'm asking this question: I've never questioned that antivirus software should be running on all windows machines, period. Lately I've had some obscure Active Directory related issues that I have tracked down to antivirus software running on our domain controllers. The specific issue was that Symantec Endpoint Protection was running on all domain controllers. Occasionally, our Exchange server triggered a false-positive in Symantec's "Network Threat Protection" on each DC in sequence. After exhausting access to all DCs, Exchange began refusing requests, presumably because it could not communicate with any Global Catalog servers or perform any authentication. Outages would last about ten minutes at a time, and would occur once every few days. It took a long time to isolate the problem because it was not easily reproducible and generally investigation was done after the issue resolved itself.

  • Bridging two networks

    I'm hoping you may be able to offer some advice as I'm not very familiar with setting up routers/access points. I have a network of computers on an active directory domain on the 192.NET. I then have another network on the 10.NET that needs to have access to the domain on the 192.NET. I am using cisco/linksys routers. What methodology would you suggest so that these two can communicate and I can add the computers form the 10.NET to the domain? Edit: Basically, I'm having trouble figuring out how to setup a static route

  • How to setup directories in Visual Studio when using boost?

    Hi, I have introduced boost to our code base, on my machine I created a boost directory called Thirdparty.Boost and added that as an additional include directory in my Visual Studio setting, all is fine. However I now want to check in my changes, so the rest of the team can get them. Inorder to build the code they would need to setup boost as I have (problem number 1). In addition we have a build server, which will need changing (problem 2). I have a way of distributing boost to everyone including the build server, so that's not a problem I need a way of referring to the boost directory without changing the default settings in Visual Studio. Why don't you change it on a project level I hear you cry? The solution has over 200 projects, which would require a lot of changes. I just wondered if there was another way? Cheers Rich

  • Display processes that access a folder.

    I am trying to write a simple program, preferably in C, that will watch a given directory. Whenever a process accesses that directory, I just want to print out the name of that process. It seems simple, but I am coming up short for solutions on MSDN. Does anyone know which library calls I will need for this, or any helpful advice? I have considered repeatedly querying for what processes have handles on the given directory and just watching for additions to that list.This approach just seems very intensive and I am hoping there is an easier way.     The following works, but I figured - since it is all based on IEnumerable, Linq can come handy here is well. By the way, is there an equivalent to Directory.GetFiles() which would return an IEnumerable instead of the array? If it exists, then would it make the code run any faster?     Is there a way to automatically deploy .net 4 using Active Directory group policy or WSUS? I want to push it out to lots of machines without having to go around to each one. Background: I have a VSTO ClickOnce application I want to deploy to non-admin users, but it uses .net 4, which won't install without admin rights, so ClickOnce fails for non-admins unless .net 4 is already installed.

    I use Apache 2.2 as WebDAV file server to a bunch of Mac and MS Windows clients. Unfortunately both clutter the filesystem with files like .DS_Store or thumbs.db. Since hte files distract my users i want to hide them from directory listings. Unfortunately the standard way of hiding files in Apache (via IndexIgnore) seems not to work via WebDAV. Is there any other way to hide files?

    I am attempting to use FFmpeg to extract audio from a mp4 and I keep running into this error: CFileffmpegvideo.mp4: No such file or directory exist. I am in command prompt (in Windows 7) and have the path as C:\Files\ffmpeg (Where ffmpeg is). I run this command line ffmpeg -i C:\Files\ffmpeg\video.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 320000 -vn music.mp3 The file is in the same folder as ffmpeg. I know I am missing something simple here but what is it?

    I have an Ubuntu installation on my netbook and after trying it out on a bootable USB I have decided to switch to Mint Linux. If I run the Mint installer from the USB will it totally trash my home directory? Or will it be equivalent to an upgrade where the systems files that need to be replaced will change leaving the users folders as is. (Yes, I plan to backup the important files in the /home folders before hand...)

    We recently switched our server to require TLS for every connection. This is working flawlessly so far, but one of our clients is having problems. Some facts: Server uses Pure-FTPD Server has a passive port range configured Server has no firewall limitations regarding the FTP Client uses WS FTP Client is behind a router Client connects to the same IP as every other, using PASSIVE mode All other clients have no trouble connecting Because of the TLS requirement, connecting using ACTIVE mode is almost not possible, but PASSIVE is working fine for everyone except this specific client.     I am trying to run the Safari browser (on Mac OS 10.4) from the command line, as follows: /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari http://localhost/dev/myfile.html However, Safari starts up and tries to access file:///Users/charlesanderson/scripts/http://localhost/dev/myfile.html /Users/charlesanderson/scripts happens to be my current directory. Can someone explain why Safari does this? Firefox is much better behaved?

    I love idea of TextMate that any directory opened in it is already a project. But sometimes I it would be good to ignore files for certain dir and I don't like idea of creating project file in that dir or remembering how I named project file in some special folder like ~/.tmproject. Is there some sort of plugin or something like this which will allow me to ignore files in dir? Perfect solution would be reading .gitignore file.

    I'm not sure if this is the best approach to this, It's my first time doing all of this (including writing shell scripts). OS: Centos My problem: I want to start multiple shell scripts at boot. One of the shell scripts is to start my own services and 3 others are for third party services. The shell script to start my own services will be looking for jar files. I currently have two services (will change), written in Java. When I run init.sh nohup.out contains Starting the thirdparty daemon... thirdparty started... .... but nothing from myservices.sh and my Java services aren't running I'm not sure where to start debugging or what could be going wrong. Edit Found some issues and got it to work, used -x instead of -n to check if the string is none zero, needed the sub string check to also be if [[ $s = $SUBSTRING ]] ; then and this last one was just stupid, missing java -jar in front of $s Still unsure of how to get init.sh to run at boot though

  • vsftp on CentOS - unable to get a folder list of /var directory

    Hi, I'm just getting started with CentOS and running into a strange issue with vsftp. When I FTP in, then change directory to /var I don't get a folder list. Is there something about CentOS or vsftp in particular that I may be missing that causes this behavior? The permissions on the folder are like others that I am able to see while connected via FTP.     I tried to migrate a 5 year old ruby on rails application onto a new server with Ubuntu 8.04, Apache 2 and MySQL 5. The application failed to run. When I looked in the error logs, I noticed Errno::ENOENT (No such file or directory - /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock) I looked around my new server but can't find a mysqld.sock file. How can I fix this problem?

    So I'm a dual-booter. I'm looking for an easy way to keep up-to-date symlinks in my Linux home folder pointing to every file and folder in the root of Windows personal directory. So, say I have foo.txt and bar.txt in C:\Windows\Documents and Settings\Nathaniel. I want symlinks of those files to automatically be made in /home/nathaniel/ (while I'm running Linux, of course).
