• Facebook and flash - why doesn't facebook recognise that I have flash installed?

  For some reason when I try to upload photos to facebook from the website, it tells me I need to upgrade my flash player: I definitely have flash installed, as can be seen in the picture, and working fine in youtube etc. My question is two-fold: 1) Does anyone know if this a problem with the version of flash I'm running, Ubuntu, or facebook itself? I get the same problem in Chrome and Firefox, so I know it's not the browser. 2) Is there a workaround or fix for this? As far as I can tell I'm running the very latest flash (on 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10) - but maybe that's the problem? Note: Before everyone starts jumping up and down about using Shotwell or Digikam or some such to upload photos to facebook, I know about these (and do use Shotwell at times). Unfortunately Shotwell only lets you upload to a Profile, but doesn't (as far as I can tell) let you upload to a facebook Page of which I am an administrator, so I am forced do it through the website. Using the simple uploader as seen in the first picture is horribly slow and tedious, and often times out while uploading. Of course if anyone knows of any alternate ways to upload to facebook pages I'd love to hear 'em!

• Tömörítés becslése - Compression Advisor

  Az Oracle Database 11g verziójától már OLTP adatbázisok is hatékonyan tömöríthetok az Advanced Compression funkcióval. Nem csak a tárolandó adatok mennyisége csökken ezáltal felére, vagy akár negyedére, de az adatbázis teljesítménye is javulhat, amennyiben I/O korlátos a rendszer (és általában az). Hogy pontosan mekkora tömörítés várható az Advanced Compression bevezetésével, az kiválóan becsülheto a Compression Advisor eszközzel. Ez nem csak az OLTP tömörítés mértékét, de 11gR2 verziótól kezdve a HCC tömörítés arányát is becsülni tudja, amely Exadata Database Machine, Pillar Axiom illetve ZFS Storage alkalmazásával érheto el. A HCC tömörítés becsléséhez csak 11gR2 adatbázisra van szükség, nem kell hozzá a speciális célhardver (Exadata, Pillar, ZFS). A Compression Advisor valójában a DBMS_COMPRESSION package használatával érheto el. A package-hez tartozik 6 konstans, amellyel a kívánt tömörítési szintek választhatók ki: Constant Type Value Description COMP_NOCOMPRESS NUMBER 1 No compression COMP_FOR_OLTP NUMBER 2 OLTP compression COMP_FOR_QUERY_HIGH NUMBER 4 High compression level for query operations COMP_FOR_QUERY_LOW NUMBER 8 Low compression level for query operations COMP_FOR_ARCHIVE_HIGH NUMBER 16 High compression level for archive operations COMP_FOR_ARCHIVE_LOW NUMBER 32 Low compression level for archive operations A GET_COMPRESSION_RATIO tárolt eljárás elemzi a tömöríteni kívánt táblát. Mindig csak egy táblát, vagy opcionálisan annak egy partícióját tudja elemezni úgy, hogy a tábláról készít egy másolatot egy külön erre a célra kijelölt/létrehozott táblatérre. Amennyiben az elemzést egyszerre több tömörítési szintre futtatjuk, úgy a tábláról annyi másolatot készít. A jó közelítésu becslés (+-5%) feltétele, hogy táblánként/partíciónként minimum 1 millió sor legyen. 11gR1 esetében még a DBMS_COMP_ADVISOR csomag GET_RATIO eljárása volt használatos, de ez még nem támogatta a HCC becslést. Érdemes még megnézni és kipróbálni a Tyler Muth blogjában publikált formázó eszközt, amivel a compression advisor kimenete alakítható jól értelmezheto formátumúvá. Végül összegezném mit is tartalmaz az Advanced Compression opció, mivel gyakran nem világos a felhasználóknak miért kell fizetni: Data Guard Network Compression Data Pump Compression (COMPRESSION=METADATA_ONLY does not require the Advanced Compression option) Multiple RMAN Compression Levels (RMAN DEFAULT COMPRESS does not require the Advanced Compression option) OLTP Table Compression SecureFiles Compression and Deduplication Ez alapján RMAN esetében például a default compression (BZIP2) szint ingyen használható, viszont az új ZLIB Advanced Compression opciót igényel. A ZLIB hatékonyabban használja a CPU-t, azaz jóval gyorsabb, viszont kisebb tömörítési arány érheto el vele.

• The Mystery of the Vanishing Disk Space

  My disk space is dwindling by about 2GB a day! I only have a few more days before I run out of space. $ df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda4 143G 126G 11G 93% / udev 491M 4.0K 491M 1% /dev tmpfs 200M 696K 199M 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 499M 144K 499M 1% /run/shm /dev/sda2 1.9G 580M 1.2G 33% /tmp /dev/sda1 92M 29M 58M 33% /boot I have been searching for the biggest directories/log files, deleting and compressing. But I am still losing the war. Finally, I realised I have a big misunderstanding: julian@server1:~$ sudo du -h / | tail -n 1 16G / All of my files in / only add up to 16 GB. That leaves 110 GB unaccounted for! Clearly I have a misunderstanding: I thought the '/dev/sda4' line represented all the files visible from '/'. What should I be reading to understand where the other storage has gone? More details: I have an Ubuntu 11.10 server, that was set-up by data-center staff. It is running my own code (which is fairly prolific with log files, but otherwise doesn't store much stuff on the drive) duplicity for backups (which tends to store a lot of signature files) various other standard services, like Apache, nagios, etc. They are very lightly used. It has been up for about 4 months without a reboot. I lied about the du output (simplified it for effect). It also complained about not being able to access GVFS and the du processes's own resources. I believe they are irrelevant: . du: cannot access `/home/julian/.gvfs': Permission denied du: cannot access `/proc/10841/task/10841/fd/4': No such file or directory du: cannot access `/proc/10841/task/10841/fdinfo/4': No such file or directory du: cannot access `/proc/10841/fd/4': No such file or directory du: cannot access `/proc/10841/fdinfo/4': No such file or directory

• Unified Auditing - Das neue Auditing in Oracle Database 12c

  In Datenbanken werden fast immer vor allem wichtige Informationen abgelegt. Der Zugriff darauf unterliegt in der Regel gesetzlichen oder betrieblichen Auflagen. Weil der Nachweis, dass diese Auflagen eingehalten werden, ausschliesslich über das Auditing möglich ist, ist eine Datenbank ohne Auditing eigentlich nicht vorstellbar. Ein Artikel der DBA Community hat sich bereits vor einiger Zeit mit den Möglichkeiten und Varianten des Auditierens in der Datenbankversion Oracle Database 11g beschäftigt. Der Artikel beschreibt das Auditing vom Default Auditing, mit dem zum Beispiel das Starten und Stoppen der Datenbank dokumentiert wird, bis hin zum Fine Grained Auditing (FGA), das sehr zielgerichtet DML Operationen erfasst. Er geht auch auf die unterschiedlichen Speichermöglichkeiten für die Audit Daten ein, auf die sogenannten audit trails: Neben der Variante, den audit trail in unterschiedlichen Tabellen der Datenbank (SYS.AUD$, SYS.FGA_LOG$, DVSYS.AUDIT_TRAIL$) abzulegen, wird dabei auf Betriebssystemdateien in einem Oracle proprietären oder im XML Format zurückgegriffen sowie auf die SYSLOGs oder EVENT LOGs der Betriebssysteme. Schaut man sich das alles an, kann man sicherlich feststellen, dass das Auditing über viele Jahre ständig an neue Anforderungen angepasst und erweitert wurde. Aber es ist damit auch nach und nach unübersichtlicher geworden. Das ist vor allem deshalb problematisch, weil das Ziel des Auditing nicht das unbegerenzte Sammeln von Informationen ist, sondern die Auswertung dieser Informationen. Darum wurden in der aktuellsten Datenbankversion, Oracle Database 12c, die unterschiedlichen audit trails zu einem einzigen audit trail zusammengeführt. Das Ergebnis wird als unified auditing bezeichnet. Die dazu nötige vollständige Überarbeitung der Architektur des Auditing Verfahrens bietet gleichzeitig die Gelegenheit, weitere Verbesserungen zu implementieren. Das betrifft sowohl die Performance als auch die Öffnung des gesamten Auditierens zur Nutzung durch diverse weitere Oracle Werkzeuge wie SQL*Loader und RMAN. As part of the comprehensive platform, Privilege Account Manager is interoperable with the Identity suite. In addition, Privileged Account Manager can re-use Oracle Identity Manager connectors for propagating changes to target systems. The two are interoperable at the data level. • B2B communication using IBM MQ

  Oracle B2B 11g, provides the out-of-the box ability to connect to IBM MQ to exchange the message. This is support is provided via JMS offering of Oracle B2B. This is an addition to the stack of existing communication capabilities of B2B with trading partners. There are 2 ways of connecting to IBM MQ using B2B 1. Credential based connectivity 2. .bindings based connectivity As a pre-requisite to connect to IBM MQ, it is required to provide the following libraries in classpath: a. com.ibm.mqjms.jar b. dhbcore.jar c. com.ibm.mq.jar d. com.ibm.mq.jmqi.jar e. mqcontext.jar f. com.ibm.mq.pcf.jar g. com.ibm.mq.commonservices.jar h. com.ibm.mq.headers.jar i. fscontext.jar j. jms.jar Add the above jars into domain library directory and the directory usually located at $DOMAIN_DIR/lib. The jars located in this($DOMAIN_DIR/lib) directory will be picked up and added dynamically to the end of the server classpath at server startup. • Shared Database Servers

  As more enterprises consolidate their database environments to support private cloud initiatives, ISVs will have to deal with sceanrios where they need to run on a shared powerful database server like Exadata. Some ISVs are concerned about meeting SLAs for performance in a shared environment. Outside the virtualization world, there are capabilities of Oracle Database which can be used to prevent resource contention and guarantee SLA. These capabilities are - 1) Instance Caging - This guarantees the CPU allocated or limits the maximum number of CPUs (and so the number of Oracle processes) that an instance of Database can use simultaneously. With this feature, ISVs can be assured that their application is allocated adequate CPUs even if the database server is shared with other applications. 2) CPU Resource Allocation with Database Resource Manager - This allocates percentages of CPU time to different users and applications within a database. ISVs can use this feature to ensure that priority user or workloads within their application get CPU resources over other requirements. 3) Exadata I/O Resource Manager - The Database Resource Manager feature in Oracle Database 11g has been enhanced for use with Exadata. This allows the sharing of storage between databases without fear of one database monopolizing the I/O bandwidth and impacting the performance of the other databases sharing the storage. This can be used to ensure that I/O does not become a performance bottleneck due to poor design of other applications sharing the same server.

• How do I transition from WUBI to a native installation?

  I have Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid installed through wubi on my laptop (it came with Windows 7 preinstalled). This was my first foray into Linux, and I'm here to stay. I have no use for Windows, and yet I must manually choose not to boot into it! Should I shrink the Windows partition to something negligible and grow the Linux one using something like gparted or fdisk, and just be content that everything runs? In that case, I need to understand the filesystems. Which is which?
