  We've been debating the following SEO question at our office: If you block bot access to a page either via robots.txt or on-page noindex metadata, does that negate the value of any backlinks to that page? We have a client who wants to block some event booking form pages from being indexed as each booking form page has a unique URL parameter and the pages are "clogging up" the Google index; however lots of websites link to those booking form pages and we wouldn't want to lose the value of those links. • Recording Topics manually and automatically

  When you are recording UPK topics, the default mode for recording is manual recording, where you tell the system when to record each screen shot. This mode allows you to take the exact screen shot you need. However, it does get a bit tedious when you are recording long topics, especially if you forget to take a few screen shots. In UPK 3.5, a new version of recording was introduced - Automatic Recording. It was designed to simplify the recording process by automatically capturing screen shots as you perform your transaction. If you haven't experimented with Automatic Recording, I'd recommend you give it a try - it might make your recording life easier. If you are recording with sound, you can also narrate your topic while recording it. To turn on Automatic Recording: 1. In Tools/Options, there are two recorder tabs. The first tab, under content defaults, includes settings that you may want to share between developers, like whether keyboard shortcuts are automatically captured. 2. The second tab is the one that contains the personal preferences, like screen shot capture key and whether to record automatically or manually. On this tab, choose the option for Automatic Recording. 3. Save the settings. Note that this setting will NOT impact content defaults; this is for your user only. When you launch the recorder, you will notice a slightly different message with guidance on how to start and stop automatic recording. Once you start recording, the recorder window is hidden until the end of the recording session to allow you to capture your transaction. In the task tray, there is a series of icons that let you know that you are capturing content. You can pause the recording, as well as set and view your sound levels if you are using sound. A camera appears during each screen capture to help you know when the system is capturing a screen shot, and a context indicator appears to show the recognition. With automatic recording, you can let the system capture the necessary screen shots. It may provide a more natural recording experience, and is probably easier for the untrained developer. On the other hand, you have a bit more control with manual recording on which screen shot appears, but it also means you have to remember to capture the screen shot. :) We'd be interested in hearing which type of recording you do, and any rationale on why you made that choice. • litespeed issue with content-type

  I am running magento with litespeed. The problem I am facing is that ajax call is being made of which header is set as x-json, but lightspeed is setting another header of text/html content type I've checked that page with apache and everything is working fine.   Sorry if this isnt the right stackexchange site to ask this, it was really hard to determine. My FB game just recently got rejected for 2 reasons. The first I fixed nicely and is irrelevant but the second I just can't see to figure out what they mean and I was hoping someone else got the same issue and did know what they meant. These are the errors: You can ignore the error under "Banners" The web preview of my game looks like this now: All I know is that the rejection has something to do with the cover image, not the icons or the screenshots.   I have lots of different websites in a Development directory in my home dir. While developing, files get saved under my username but websites configured under apache it's permission need to be set as _www user and group. What's the best way to handle this? Do I run apache under a different user/group? Do I run my development tools under a different user? Do add myself to the _www group? (seems like it doesn't work btw) I've just switched to a mac and I'm trying to find a smooth development workflow, so it would be best if i could just run the necessary tools, save some files and be able to test the website without much hassle.   I'm trying to setup two domains correctly. I have some issues I hope you can help me. Site one's conf: <VirtualHost myipaddress:80> ServerName www.domain1.com ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot /home/domain1/public_html </VirtualHost> My other domain conf is: <VirtualHost myipaddress:80> ServerName www.domain2.com ServerAlias *.domain2.com domain2.com ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot /home/domain2/public_html </VirtualHost> The default site is disabled. The problem is that when accessing "domain2.com" from my browser, it always redirects to "www.domain1.com". It only works when I excplicitly access "www.domain2.com". I have also other domains like "domain1.net", "domain1.info" pointing to my server but at this moment are not configured either setup on Apache yet I can access from browser and always accessing to "www.domain1.com". By the way is there any possible configuration over Apache to handle IP only, I mean if I type "http://myipaddress/" I get the "www.domain1.com"... Arrgh.

• Manage song metadata on CentOS from command line

  I am making a simple Pandora.com alternative for myself and a few friends where the user can upload his/her songs and listen to them anywhere. My intent is to make a lightweight, simple player in HTML5 so all the user needs is a current Firefox or Chrome to use it. I have set it up so that all uploaded songs get converted to .ogg and added to a database but I also want some metadata (not sure if that is the correct term) for the songs to be stored in the database so the player can tell the user what song he/she is listening too. I know there are several GUI tools for managing the title/artist/album info for songs but I'm having trouble finding any good ones I can use from the command line. If the song has the information already in the file, I think I can use mplayer to retrieve the information but it would be really great if there was one that would look up the song information online. I don't mind interfacing with an API (would be pretty interesting actually). Do you guys have any suggestions?

• How should I manage VPS email?

  I have been slowly learning how to run a linux VPS for a while now. Since I build websites I'm confident with running and securing a web server like nginx... or at least there haven't been any casualties yet. However, email scares me. Almost all websites require email to communicate with users. Most of the time email is only needed on my sites during registration as a means of verification. I hardly ever need to accept incoming mail back. Nevertheless, my lack off understanding of how email servers can be abused is worrying me. Not only do you need to secure email servers - you also have to prove to the world that your emails are legit and constantly fight against being blacklisted. Insuring my emails 'good name' is not something I want to devote my life too. What should someone like me do to send emails from my VPS? Should I look for a company to send email through that can worry about this for me? Should I just use google apps until my sites are large enough to worry about? Or is all this just ignorant fear and running your own email server (that actually works) really is easy?

  With the release of WebCenter Content PS5, a new folder architecture called 'Framework Folders' was introduced.  This is meant to replace the folder architecture of 'Folders_g'.  While the concepts of a folder structure and access to those folders through Desktop Integration Suite remain the same, the underlying architecture of the component has been completely rewritten.  One of the main goals of the new folders is to scale better at large volumes and remove the limitations of 1000 content items or sub-folders within a folder.  Along with the new architecture, it has a new look and a few additional features have been added.  One of those features are Query Folders.  These are folders that are populated simply by a query rather then literally putting items within the folders.  This is something that the Library has provided, but it always took an administrator to define them through the Web Layout Editor.  Now users can quickly define query folders anywhere within the standard folder hierarchy.
