  • How do I get more information on a potential network freeloader?

    I have a home network set up, complete with a relatively good password. I'm in Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and have been noticing, on occasion, a computer showing up in my Finder's Shared section, that is not one of my own (the "pe-xpjalle" box pictured below). He has a tendency to come and go. How can I figure out his MAC address or something, so I can block him? I checked my "Logs and Statistics" in the Airport Utility, and didn't see that computer under DHCP clients. I'd rather not change my password, since I have quite a few devices I'd have to update. Is there any other reason he's show up on my network besides having guessed my password? Update: I fixed the Dropbox URL above (how embarrassing, I'm new to Dropbox. Thanks for the heads up, Doug.) Update 2: I tried clicking on "Connect as..." just for the hell of it, and got the dialog below. Now I have even less an idea what's going on than before. I don't have Parallels of VMware running, just the following: Transmission, NetNewsWire, Mail, Things, Safari, iTunes, Photoshop, Pages, Yojimbo, Preferences, AppleScript Editor, Software Update, Airport Utility, and Terminal. I don't think any of those create a virtual network machine, right? And no VMware machine of mine has ever had a name resembling "pe-xpjalle". Update 3: I just changed my passwords on both my N- and G-only networks, and I'm still seeing this, so I highly doubt that it's someone who's figured out my password (twice now). I'm really stumped.

  • How do I find information about a particular trojan? "W32/Smalltroj.XVGT", as reported by Norman

    I tried checking the Norman antivirus page, Virus-descriptions, but sadly it seems Norman has intentionally obfuscated their search results (I tried clicking on W, and it seems they just list viruses with a W somewhere in the description, instead of more typical, all viruses with a name starting with a W.) Is there a common virus-list somewhere, or is it as I suspect, every antivirus manufacturer is free to come up with their own identification tags for each virus? Several "vshost32.exe" files, related to Microsoft Visual Studio 2008, has been quarantined on our server today, probably related to a test-deployment of some internal software. Some developer machines that have grabbed that latest version of our program has also had the same files quarantined. Now, these files should not have been deployed in the first case, so I'll be looking into that, but whenever any developer now builds a program locally and attempts to debug, the same file is placed in the build output directory, and promptly quarantined. Does anyone have any clues as to how I can go about verifying this before I pointedly ask the antivirus software to go take a hike on this particular virus? Edit: I've copied one of the quarantined files manually to a machine over the network that doesn't have antivirus installed, and compared the file on that machine with a local copy (on that machine) of the vshost32.exe template file, and they're bit-for-bit identical. I guess this is a false positive. I still would like to know if it would be possible for me to verify this in any other way though, since next time such a trojan might be reported in a compiled file that we won't have a pristine copy of.

  • Is there any way to use the xscreensaver gltext to monitor system information?

    I am trying to get the X screensaver gltext to monitor my system temp and maybe some other stats. Writing a script that puts together the stats periodically is no problem, but the main thing I'm running into is that gltext doesn't refresh - whatever text I feed it stays there. So, for example, I run this command: $ /usr/lib/xscreensaver/gltext -text "`cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature`" and get a gltext window showing: temperature: 60 C I can manipulate it and format it as necessary, but as my CPU heats up and cools down, it doesn't update, even if I include time variables that do. I have a script that feeds gltext the time as the first line and the temp as the second line - and although the time updates continuously as the time changes, the temperature value remains the same as whenever the screensaver started. Is it possible to do what I want, which is change the text every 60 seconds if the temperature changes?

  • Notebook computer battery says: plugged in but not charging with no further information. Is the bat

    My 1.5 year old Dell Studio 15 notebook computer has a battery and I keep it attached to the notebook but 98% of the time I just plug in the power adapter. Lately when I unplugged the power adapter, the battery was only good for 10 minutes, and a few days ago, when I unplugged the power adapter, the computer simply turned off. When clicking on the battery icon on Win 7, it says "Plugged in, not charging": is the battery dead? Or can Win 7 have any option to not charge the battery? It is a Dell Studio 15, I wonder if in such case, it looks like it can be a manufacture's defect, would Dell replace the battery? (if there was a recall, then they probably would, i think). The notebook is 1.5 year old.

  • Is it possible to retrieve lost Windows XP profile information?

    I'm running Windows XP Professional on a PC which is less than a year old. About 3 months ago I got an error on boot saying windows could not find my profile. At this point it created a temp one. On this occasion I copied the temp data back into my existing profile and carried on using it. After another month it died again and, once again set me up a temp user. Each time this happens I lose everything related to my profile (desktop, start menu, etc). I ran checks on the hard disk and these suggested nothing was wrong so this seems a software issue not a disk problem. On the advice of my computer manufacturer I am now considering reinstalling Windows but just wanted to check if there's any other ideas for things I might be able to try. Any suggestions for what could be causing the problem would also be gladly appreciated.

  • On Mikrotik RouterOS, is it possible to get Netflow information from a bridged connection?

    I have a RouterOS box set up to bridge two ethernet connections. I have use-ip-firewall=yes in the bridge configuration, so that the ports go through the firewall. I've enabled netflow reporting via ip/traffic-flow, but the only packets I see reported are broadcast and multicast packets, not the packets that are flowing through the bridge. The documentation indicates that traffic flow logging happens after firewall processing and that it won't work with bridged connections by default, but I would have thought that use-ip-firewall=yes ought to address this. Is it possible to make this work somehow?

  • Where does the information shown by OS X Terminal 'Display all commands' feature come from?

    I just learned that if you hit and hold ESC while on the Mac Terminal, a prompt appears after a few seconds offering to show every command available on your system, including aliases, built-ins, and executables on your PATH. Soruce: http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2008/05/list-all-possible-terminal-commands.html However, the output is show through a more filter, and I cannot grep it or pipe it to another command. Does anyone know how this magic output is generated? Is it just generated on the fly by Terminal? Is there a bash command that can be called explicitly on the command line and get the same result? It is mostly curiosity, but I would love to be able to get the results as text I can post-process and not just browse on screen.

  • fstab and cifs mounting, possible to store authentication information outside of fstab?

    I am currently using cifs to mount some network shares (that require authentication) in /etc/fstab. It works excellently, but I would like to move the authentication details (username/pass) outside of fstab and be able to chmod it 600 (as fstab can have issues if I were to change its permissions). I was wondering if it is possible to do this (many-user system, don't want these permissions to be viewable by all users). from: //server/foo/bar /mnt/bar cifs username=user,password=pass,r 0 0 to: //server/foo/bar /mnt/bar cifs <link to permissions>,r 0 0 (or something analogous to this). Are the values normal on a Dell Precision M90 (Intel Centrono Dual CPU, 2GB RAM, 80 GB Disk)?     Let me start by saying I am somewhat of a Vmware novice, I know just enought to manage and create servers at a basic level from the vSphere client. I have a VMWare server, ESX 4.0 connected over iSCSI to a SAN. The SAN is being used as storage for both RDMs and VMFS volumes. The SAN has died and I ordered a new one. Where can I see the settings related to the iSCSI and volume configuration so that I can try and replicate them on the new SAN when it arrives?

  • How can I forward certain emails based on header information with Postfix?

    We receive service requests via a particular email. The request is then forwarded to other addresses, using an entry in virtual_alias_maps. Upon seeing the word "EMERGENCY" in the subject line of a request to this email, I would also like to forward this to another address (an alias of our administrator's SMS email addresses). I think I can accomplish this with header checks and the REDIRECT command. However, REDIRECT only sends it to the redirected address, not the forwarded addresses. In the case of "EMERGENCY" I would like it to go to the redirect address and the original forwarded addresses. I am fairly new to Postfix and I feel like I am missing something here. Any suggestions?

  • "Metadata information not found" while using EF4's POCO Template?

    I just installed the POCO Template for EF4. I have a single entity in my model, AnnouncementText, and the T4 files seem to be properly generated. Attempting to access this new entity is throwing the following error when I access the auto-generated property MyObjectContext.AnnouncementTexts: InvalidOperationException: Mapping and metadata information could not be found for EntityType 'MyNamespace.AnnouncementText'. The properties on the AnnouncementText POCO seem to match up with the columns in the database, and I haven't changed any of the auto-generated code. The stack trace is: at System.Data.Objects.ObjectContext.GetTypeUsage(Type entityCLRType) at System.Data.Objects.ObjectContext.GetEntitySetForNameAndType(String entitySetName, Type entityCLRType, String exceptionParameterName) at System.Data.Objects.ObjectContext.CreateObjectSet[TEntity](String entitySetName) at MyNamespace.MyObjectContext.get_AnnouncementTexts() in C:\<snip>\MyObjectContext.Context.cs:line 65 at MyNamespace.Class1.Main() in C:\<snip>\Class1.cs:line 14 If I delete the .tt files from the solution and enable code generation on the model, I am able to access the property without issue.     I have a half dozen sites on my server and I would like to get some info from IIS7 to display in the footer of each page (as long as you are an admin of course). I am going through the ServerObject and found Sites but am not finding anything obvious for "this site". What should I do to get at the information for the exact site in IIS7 that the page is running on?   • Spring security annotations with EL -- requires debug information compiled in?

    I am considering using Spring Security annotations for my application, with the EL (expression language) feature. For example: @PreAuthorize("hasPermission(#contact, 'admin')") public void deletePermission(Contact contact, Sid recipient, Permission permission); I need the EL capability because I have built my own ACL implementation. However, to use this capability with the "#contact" type arguments, the Spring documentation says this: You can access any of the method arguments by name as expression variables, provided your code has debug information compiled in. This begs two questions: It is acceptable to have a production application commercially distributed with debug info in it? If not, is there any way around this? Thanks for any guidance on this!

    I have a tool which uses the output of dumpbin /symbols to do some dependency analysis with our C/C++ libraries. When we compiled the libs with VS 6.0, the dumpbin COFF SYMBOL TABLE contained entries like 000 00000008 DEBUG notype Filename | .file x:\mydir\mysource.c allowing me to get the relationship between sources and defined/used symbols, which is essential for my tool. When we compile with VS 2005, these entries are missing. When I look at the libs with a hex editor, it seems that there is no filename information at all included in the binary files, so it seems not to be a dumbin problem but is compilation related. So I'm looking for a way to get the Filename entries back into my libraries when compiling with VS 2005.

    Hi, I am trying to convert text into graphics using c#. My input is character string and output is bitmap with the input text. After lot of search I found some ways to do it, I found some techiques which uses this kind of techinque. For Example While creating Captcha, we have to print the character in the bitmap. But for that I should have the font installed in my windows. I can not perform such operation without installing the font. I have .ttf file with me but I dont want to install it because my work for that font is temporary only. Is there any way where I can extract out the Font's graphical information by providing the Character?   • How can I have a Visual Studio Report(.rdlc) with account information and also a chart in the same r

    I'm working on a report in Visual Studio 2008 with their Report tooling and I'm not sure how to approach this conceptually. I have a report I want to generate. At the top of the report will be a bunch of information about a customer of our site (Name, Address, Phone). Then below will be a chart of the purchases that customer has each month. My problem is that I want the content at the top of the page to use a query that selects from my Users table in my database. But then I need another query that gets all of the purchases grouped by month. I've thought one way to approach this would be to place a subreport on the parent report that only contained the chart. The parent report would have the details of the account. Is this the correct approach?
