• 5 ways to stop code thrashing&hellip;

  A few days ago I was programming on a personal project and hit a roadblock. I was applying the MVVM pattern and for some reason my view model was not updating the view when the state changed??? I had applied this pattern many times before and had never had this problem. It just didn’t make sense. So what did I do… I did what anyone would have done in my situation and looked to pass the blame to someone or something else. I tried to blame one of the inherited base classes, but it looked fine, then to Visual Studio, but it seemed to be fine and eventually to any random segment of code I came across. My elementary problem had now mushroomed into one that had lost any logical basis and I was in thrashing mode! So what to do when you begin to thrash? 1) Do a general code cleanup – Now there is a difference between cleaning code and changing code . When you thrash you change code and you want to avoid this. What you really want to do is things like rename variables to have better meaning and go over your comments. 2) Do a proof of concept – if cleaning code doesn’t help. The  you want to isolate the problem and identify the key concepts. When you isolate code you ideally want it to be in a totally separate project with as little complexity as possible. Make the building blocks and try and replicate the functionality that you are getting in your current application. 3) Phone a friend – I have found speaking to someone else about the problem generally helps me solve any thrashing issues I am having. Usually they don’t even have to say anything to solve the problem, just you talking them through the problem helps you get clarity of mind. 4) Let the dust settle – Sometimes time is the best solution. I have had a few problems that no matter who I discussed them with and no matter how much code cleaning I had done I just couldn’t seem to fix it. My brain just seemed to be going in circles. A good nights rest has always helped and often just the break away from the problem has helped me find a solution. 5) Stack overflow it – So similar to phone a friend. I am really surprised to see what a melting pot stack overflow has been and what a help it has been in solving technology specific problems. Just be considerate to those using the site and explain clearly exactly what problem you are having and the technologies you are using or else you will probably not get any useful help…

The box has overflow:auto, and I'm trying to get the first box to act as a side bar that will follow you down the page. • I'm graduating with a Computer Science degree but I don't feel like I know how to program.

  I'm graduating with a Computer Science degree but I see websites like Stack Overflow and search engines like Google and don't know where I'd even begin to write something like that. During one summer I did have the opportunity to work as a iPhone developer, but I felt like I was mostly gluing together libraries that other people had written with little understanding of the mechanics happening beneath the hood. I'm trying to improve my knowledge by studying algorithms, but it is a long and painful process. I find algorithms difficult and at the rate I am learning a decade will have passed before I will master the material in the book. Given my current situation, I've spent a month looking for work but my skills (C, Python, Objective-C) are relatively shallow and are not so desirable in the local market, where C#, Java, and web development are much higher in demand. That is not to say that C and Python opportunities do not exist but they tend to demand 3+ years of experience I do not have. My GPA is OK (3.0) but it's not high enough to apply to the large companies like IBM or return for graduate studies. Basically I'm graduating with a Computer Science degree but I don't feel like I've learned how to program. I thought that joining a company and programming full-time would give me a chance to develop my skills and learn from those more experienced than myself, but I'm struggling to find work and am starting to get really frustrated. I am going to cast my net wider and look beyond the city I've grown up in, but what have other people in similar situation tried to do? I've worked hard but don't have the confidence to go out on my own and write my own app. (That is, become an indie developer in the iPhone app market.) If nothing turns up I will need to consider upgrading and learning more popular skills or try something marginally related like IT, but given all the effort I've put in that feels like copping out. EDIT: Thank you for all the advice. I think I was premature because of unrealistic expectations but the comments have given me a dose of reality. I will persevere and continue to code. I have a project in mind, although well beyond my current capabilities it will challenge me to hone my craft and prove my worth to myself (and potential employers). Had I known there was a career overflow I would have posted there instead. Thanks again!

I have tried to adjust many CSS properties such as overflow, position, height, float, etc. in firebug and none of my edits have had any positive effect. I am even using a clearing div. Perhaps I am overlooking something pretty easy. How do I prevent the footer from covering up the table content?

• DD-WRT router causing IP address conflicts across network

  My DD-WRT router has lost its mind! I just set up two DD-WRT routers, one as a WAP (working fine) and one in Client Bridge (routed) mode (the problem). Not long after setup I started seeing IP address conflicts on other machines. The event log always points the finger at my Client Bridge router's MAC address. Neighbour table overflow The log on my router is flooded with Neighbour table overflow errors. These start a minute or two after boot. The network is rather large, with +200 IP addresses being used in this subnet. The other router shows no such errors. Mass ARP requests from 1.1.1.1 I'm also seeing constant ARP requests (with the problem router's MAC address) from 1.1.1.1. Seems like it's bugging everything on the network for its MAC address and then promptly forgetting it (or never receiving a response). Configuration: Model: Buffalo N600 Firmware: DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (03/21/11) Wireless Mode: Client Bridge (routed) I'm not sure what configuration details are relevant and I'd rather not have comments flooded, so just ping me in this chat if you want to know something.   I have a pile of Sun X2200-M2 servers. These servers have ECC memory. • Which is more secure: Tomcat standalone or Tomcat behind Apache?

  This question is not about performance, nor about load-balancing, etc. Which would be more secure: running Tomcat in standalone mode or running Tomcat behind apache? The thing is, Tomcat is written in Java and hence it is pretty much immune to buffer overrun/overflow (unless a buffer overrun in a C-written lib used by Tomcat can be triggered, but they're rare [the last I remember was in zlib, many many moons ago] and one heck of a hack to actually exploit), which gets rid of a lot of potential exploits. This page: http://wiki.apache.org/tomcat/FAQ/Security has this to say: There have been no public cases of damage done to a company, organization, or individual due to a Tomcat security issue... there have been only theoretical vulnerabilities found. All of those were addressed even though there were no documented cases of actual exploitation of these vulnerabilities. This, combined with the fact that buffer overrun/overflow are pretty much non-existent in Java, makes me believe that Tomcat in standalone mode is pretty secure. In addition to that, I can install both Java and Tomcat on Linux without needing to be root. The only moment I need to be root is to set up a transparent port 8080 to port 80 forwarding (and 8443 to 443). Two iptables line as root, that's all root is needed for. (I don't know for Apache). Apache is much more used than Tomcat and definitely does not have a security track record as good as Tomcat. What would make Tomcat + Apache more secure? What would make Tomcat + Apache less secure? In short: which is more secure, Tomcat standalone or Tomcat with Apache? (remembering that performance aren't an issue here)

• Working with an external button box

  I tried this question on Stack Overflow, but I was pointed here, so here goes: For a new project for myself, I am looking for a way to be able to (for example) open a pop-up window on my laptop, by pressing a button on an external device (to be build by myself, or at least bought) connected with USB. Basically I would be looking at something like a Arduino or Raspberry (IF I am looking in the right direction) with buttons on it, and as soon as I hit a button on the external box with physical buttons, a command activates on my laptop and for example opens a popup window in which I can input tekst. Does anyone know: 1) if it is possible to do this at all. 2) What equipment is needed for the external box, what programming is needed. I preffer .net (dot net) but maybe it can only be done with software from the external box. If anyone can point me in the right direction, like make/model of the external box or websites I would be very happy. I have knowledge of Visual Studio/.net but I am willing to learn other languages if .net is not an option for this project. • Unable to install Xdebug

  I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up? You can retrieve the file from downloading here. You will find the file in the "DynamicQuery" folder. That file will give you the ability to utilized dynamic ORDERBY clause since we don't know what column we're filtering by except on the initial load. To serialize the JSON back from the C-sharp to the JS, I incorporated the James Newton-King JSON.net DLL found here : http://json.codeplex.com/releases/view/37810. • MVVM/Presentation Model With WinForms

  Hi, I'm currently working on a brownfield application, it's written with winforms, as a preparation to use WPF in a later version, out team plans to at least use the MVVM/Presentation model, and bind it against winforms... I've explored the subject, including the posts in this site (which i love very much), when boiled down, the main advantage of wpf are : binding controls to properties in xaml. binding commands to command objects in the viewmodel. the first feature is easy to implement (in code), or with a generic control binder, which binds all the controls in the form. the second feature is a little harder to implement, but if you inherit from all your controls and add a command property (which is triggered by an internal event such as click), which is binded to a command instance in the ViewModel. The challenges I'm currently aware of are : implementing a commandmanager, (which will trigger the CanInvoke method of the commands as necessery. winforms only supports one level of databinding : datasource, datamember, wpf is much more flexible. am i missing any other major features that winforms lacks in comparison with wpf, when attempting to implement this design pattern? i sure many of you will recommend some sort of MVP pattern, but MVVM/Presentation model is the way to go for me, because I'll want future WPF support.
