• Forcing a Service to Restart at Boot

  So I use winbind and samba to connect to an AD domain at work, and one of my ubuntu machines has been having issues. At boot, I cannot log in as an AD user, but if I log in as the local user and do a sudo service winbind restart it works fine. Yes, winbind does start at boot, although for some reason incorrectly I think. I can't tell anything from the logs, and I'm just wondering how to force winbind to restart after it starts the first time, at boot. Thanks!

• Lenovo Y460 Shutdown/Reboot/Logoff doesn't work

  This is a part of the massive dump of problems I'm encountering with my Lenovo Y460 and Ubuntu. Problem: Cannot shutdown/reboot/logoff. Logoff issue: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1791439 Shutdown and Reboot often freezes without doing anything. Currently can only use hard reset. Maybe related to the tricks I did to work around the ATI/Intel issue. See: Lenovo Y460 ATI PowerXpress issue I'm not sure where I can find the shutdown/reboot logs. If you tell me I'll be happy to provide them. Not sure what to do as of right now other than never shutdown/reboot or logoff

• Unable to use TL-WN821N

  Hi, I got a TP-LINK USB wireless module - TL-WN821N, using Ubuntu 10.4 (same problems were also seen in 10.10). From everything I've read online, the usb should work just fine, since the Atheros ar9170 is built into the kernel. However, when I plug it in, it is detected as a USB device, but there is no wlan associated with it, and basically - nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong? what should I do so that the Atheros driver is associated with this device? btw, on Windows it works fine (with the drivers). • Is there a simple, safe way to trigger a GPU lockup on a susceptible computer?

  Answers to my previous question, Ubuntu 12.04 froze, requiring powercycle. What should I look / grep for in the logs?, have led me to suspect that my computer is experiencing an intermittent GPU lockup. It has been happening about once a week, usually when I am using Chrome. Today it happened when I was creating a diagram on lucidchart I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT and dual monitors running in Xinerama mode. I am using 12.04 with the proprietary ATI driver installed. When the computer locks-up, I can still ssh in. And I would like to follow the instructions on reporting this provided at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze Is there a (safe) way to cause a GPU lockup so that I can go ahead and file a bug, rather than waiting until it happens again?

• How do I select Wireless radio portions in Ubuntu?

  Bear with me, to be honest I have no idea what Wireless radio portions are.... At my school, I was told my the user support that the wireless network in my dorm uses 801.11 A/B/G/N. For some reason, the wireless in my room doesn't work. However, other buildings use only A/B/G, they say. In any other building, my wireless works fine.   The answer to this SO question has become stale: iOS version/device statistics - where can i find? because time currency wasn't part of that question, and iOS version updates have been release since this question was asked. Is there a web site or other publicly available source which keeps a current or frequently updated list of the percentages of iOS devices and OS versions in use, perhaps by continual monitoring of app analytics or web site logs or other means? And what device or OS information are iOS app analytics currently allowed to report, if any? (...assuming an appropriate privacy policy and adhering to such, of course.)

It is possible to change at a parent level if required It is not recommended that you set the level to FINIEST at a parent level as it will generate a lot of logging. Make sure you apply the change to take affect. Simple as that.

  Today I got an exception in a report using SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2, but only when attempting to go to the last page of a large report: The report execution sgjahs45wg5vkmi05lq4zaee has expired or cannot be found.;Digging into the logs I found this:library!ReportServer_0-47!149c!12/06/2012-12:37:58:: e ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ReportServerStorageException: , An error occurred within the report server database.  This may be due to a connection failure, timeout or low disk condition within the database.;I knew it wasn't a network problem or timeout because I could repeat the problem at will.  I checked the disk space and that seemed fine as well.  The real issue was a lack of memory on the database server that had the ReportServer database.  Restarting the SQL Server engine freed up plenty of RAM and the problem immediately went away.

  I know that in general cookies themselves are not considered robust enough to store authentication information. What I am wondering is if there is an existing design pattern or framework for sharing authentication across subdomains without having to use something more complex like OpenID. Ideally, the process would be that the user visits abc.example.org, logs in, and continues on to xyz.example.org where they are automatically recognized (ideally, the reverse should also be possible -- a login via xyz means automatic login at abc). The snag is that abc.example.org and xyz.example.org are both on different servers and different web application frameworks, although they can both use a shared database. The web application platforms include PHP, ColdFusion, and Python (Django), although I'm also interested in this from a more general perspective (i.e. language agnostic).

  I have been using Awstats for many years to process my log files. But I am missing many possibilities (like cross-domain reports) and I hate being stuck with extra fields I created years ago. Anyway, I am not going to continue to use this script. Is there a modern apache logs analytics solution based on modern storage technologies like NoSQL or at least somehow ready to cope with large datasets efficiently? I am primarily looking for something that generates nice sortable and searchable outputs with the focus on web analytics, before having to write my own frontends. (so graylog2 is not an option) This question is purely about log file based solutions.

• better way to track defect sources in tfs

  What is the best way to track defect sources in tfs? We have various teams for a project like the vulnerability team, the customer, pre-sales, etc. We give a build and these teams independently test it. They do not have access to our tfs system. So they usually send in their defects via email. It will usually be send in an excel format. Our testing team takes these up and logs them into tfs. Sometimes they modify the original defect description (in excel) and add the expected/actual results. Sometimes they miss to cite the source. I am talking about managing the various sources as such. Is there a way we can add these sources into tfs, and actually link this particular source with the defects, with individual comments associated with them (saying where in the source we can find the actual material for the defect).

• Kernel freezes with nvidia optimus and bumblebee on 12.04

  I have a Sony VAIO with Intel i7-3520M and NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 640M LE]. I installed bumblebee and nvidia drivers. They work almost fine, but the system freezes like in a kernel panic once every day. I can play Dota 2 with primusrun on it with 20-30fps 1080p. But when I do something simple as expanding the KDE calendar widget from the bottom right corner, the system hangs a lot and windows borders get another border. The system freezes in not very intensive graphic tasks, for instance, ALT+TAB with KWin effects or pressing ALT+F2 for poping up the launcher. How can I solve this? Info: I use KDE. • Black screen after upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10

  Just upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 and all I got was a black screen. The hardware I'm running is Asus Zenbook UX31A (Intel GPU). I do hear that the login screen drums do play, so the system does boot to login screen. When I try to boot using kernel 3.11.0-12 recovery mode, it tells me "initctl: event failed". Then if I go on an press ctrl+alt+f2, log in and command startx, it dies because "Fatal server error: no screens found". Here are some logs from /var/log/Xorg.0.log http://pastebin.com/ZQasUKJx Kernel 3.8.0-31 work ok, as did things before the upgrade.

• Lenovo u400, Ubuntu 12.04. Sudden reboots / power down

  I've recently bought a Lenovo u400 (http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/ideapad/u-series/u400/) and installed Ubuntu 12.04 on it. Everything works fine (I've installed the proprietary ATI drivers for switchable graphics) except that I get a random power down or reboot either while surfing the web or watching videos. Monitoring the temperature with sensors, the laptop never goes into any critical zone but still may power down or reboot once in a while. Is there any logs that I should check and any particular message I should take note of? EDIT: This happens to me as well. This also happens without proprietary drivers activated.

• Continuously asking for partial upgrade

  I just upgraded my Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 after the announcement of the final release of Ubuntu 12.04. The upgrade process went fine. But now when I run the update manager it asks for a partial upgrade. But the funny thing is it installs 84 new packages in installation step, remove all the 84 packages in the cleaning step!!! This is happening recursively(Every time I launch the update manager). Please can you suggest something? • MAAS fails to Commission nodes

  I'm evaluating MaaS/Juju. I followed instructions in this link http://maas.ubuntu.com/docs1.5/install.html to setup MaaS. I'm running this in Oracle VirtualBox environment so Power options are not configured for the VMs. PXE booting VM works fine. The node shuts down itself and registers with MaaS in Declared state. Issues: a) When I Commission the VM (which is in the Declared state), first it gets IP-Config: no response after 60 secs - giving up errors. (See link below for a screenshot). b) Fails to mount the boot device and drops into initramfs prompt. • How to disable automatic login?

  I was playing around with "User accounts" and somehow set automatic login. Now, when I start my PC, it just has one button named as "login". Clicking that button, directly logs me in to my PC. There is no music or no asking for password while logging in. As a side effect, it asks me separately for keyring password How to disable auto login and make login/keyring password unified again like before? NOTE: Attempting to disable Automatic Login from System Settings User Accounts does not work.   I have Player 1 and Player 2 I am using Json to send and retrieve player data between the client and the server, but when another player logs in, and is in the same map, how would I send that data to both players to update the graphics engine to show there are 2 Players on the map? About my game it is a 2D RPG tile based game it is 24x15 Tiles it is Real time Action it should interact anywhere between 10-150 ping players interact with each other when in the same map and can see each other moving around the game world is persistent, and is saved when the server shuts down Right now the server just sends the player Only their information which is inside a Json Object Here is an example of what I am talking about If you notice there are 2 separate characters in 2 separate clients, but they are running on the same server. I am trying to get them to show up on both clients, but I don't know how I should accomplish this. Should I send it as an added value in the Json object? Also what is the name of this process so I can look it up and find more info on it?

• Error running phusion passenger in standalone mode

  I'm trying to run standalone phusion passenger so that I can run different ruby rvm configurations on the same host. I already have ruby and passenger running fine on this host. I am following the instructions here. When I run standalone passenger the first time, it appears to successfully install nginx. • Business Case for investing time developing Stubs and BizUnit Tests

  I was recently in a position where I had to justify why effort should be spent developing Stubbed Integration Tests for BizTalk solutions. These tests are usually developed using the BizUnit framework. I assumed that most seasoned BizTalk developers would consider this best practice. Even though Microsoft suggest use of BizUnit on MSDN, I've not found a single site listing the justifications for investing time writing stubs and BizUnit tests. Stubs Stubs should be developed to isolate your development team from external dependencies. This is described by Michael Stephenson here. Failing to do this can result in the following problems: In contract-first scenarios, the external system interface will have been defined.  But the interface may not have been setup or even developed yet for the BizTalk developers to work with. By the time you open the target location to see the data BizTalk has sent, it may have been swept away. If you are relying on the UI of the target system to see the data BizTalk has sent, what do you do if it fails to arrive? It may take time for the data to be processed or it may be scheduled to be processed later. Learning how to use the source\target systems and investigations into where things go wrong in these systems will slow down the BizTalk development effort. By the time the data is visible in a UI it may have undergone further transformations. In larger development teams working together, do you all use the same source and target instances. How do you know which data was created by whose tests? How do you know which event log error message are whose?  Another developer may have “cleaned up” your data. It is harder to write BizUnit tests that clean up the data\logs after each test run. What if your B2B partners' source or target system cannot support the sort of testing you want to do. They may not even have a development or test instance that you can work with. Their single test instance may be used by the SIT\UAT teams. There may be licencing costs of setting up an instances of the external system. The stubs I like to use are generic stubs that can accept\return any message type.  Usually I need to create one per protocol. They should be driven by BizUnit steps to: validates the data received; and select a response messages (or error response). Once built, they can be re-used for many integration tests and from project to project. I’m not saying that developers should never test against a real instance.  Every so often, you still need to connect to real developer or test instances of the source and target endpoints\services. The interface developers may ask you to send them some data to see if everything still works.  Or you might want some messages sent to BizTalk to get confidence that everything still works beyond BizTalk. Tests Automated “Stubbed Integration Tests” are usually built using the BizUnit framework. These facilitate testing of the entire integration process from source stub to target stub. It will ensure that all of the BizTalk components are configured together correctly to meet all the requirements. More fine grained unit testing of individual BizTalk components is still encouraged.  But BizUnit provides much the easiest way to test some components types (e.g. Orchestrations). Using BizUnit with the Behaviour Driven Development approach described by Mike Stephenson delivers the following benefits: source: http://biztalkbddsample.codeplex.com – Video 1. Requirements can be easily defined using Given/When/Then Requirements are close to the code so easier to manage as features and scenarios Requirements are defined in domain language The feature files can be used as part of the documentation The documentation is accurate to the build of code and can be published with a release The scenarios are effective to document the scenarios and are not over excessive The scenarios are maintained with the code There’s an abstraction between the intention and implementation of tests making them easier to understand The requirements drive the testing These same tests can also be used to drive load testing as described here. If you don't do this ... If you don't follow the above “Stubbed Integration Tests” approach, the developer will need to manually trigger the tests. This has the following risks: Developers are unlikely to check all the scenarios each time and all the expected conditions each time. After the developer leaves, these manual test steps may be lost. What test scenarios are there?  What test messages did they use for each scenario? There is no mechanism to prove adequate test coverage. A test team may attempt to automate integration test scenarios in a test environment through the triggering of tests from a source system UI. If this is a replacement for BizUnit tests, then this carries the following risks: It moves the tests downstream, so problems will be found later in the process. Testers may not check all the expected conditions within the BizTalk infrastructure such as: event logs, suspended messages, etc. These automated tests may also get in the way of manual tests run on these environments.

  When my system starts up it logs everything into syslog/dmesg. And I can review it for problems. When my system shuts down, where does that get logged? I didn't see anything obvious in /var/log in 10.04. (My 11.10 system is out of reach at the moment.) I looked at How do I turn on 'shutdown logging' or operating system tracing? but didn't see anything that helped. I use kubuntu, but all of the stuff at this level is probably the same.

  I have Ubuntu 12.04, which has been working great for me since I installed it a year ago. Yesterday I ran the updates that update manager recommended. (Last time I ran updates before was about a week ago). After the updates were installed, it asked me to reboot. So I rebooted it, and then it stopped at login prompt (as a command line, with no windows). I logged in and tried to manually start the windows manager, and the screen went blank, and stayed blank I waited several minutes, and then turned it off. How can I figure out what is the problem? Which logs should I check?

  I'm analyzing web server logs both in Apache and IIS log formats. I want to find the evidence for automatic browsing, like web robots, spiders, bots, etc. I used python robot-detection 0.2.8 for detecting robots in my log files, but I know there may be other robots (automatic programs) which have traversed through the web site but robot-detection can not identify. So I want to ask: Are there any specific clues that can be found in log files that human users do not leave but automated software would? Do they follow a specific navigation pattern? I saw some requests for favicon.ico - does this implicate that it is a automatic browsing?. I found this article and this question with some valuable points.

• Ubuntu Server 12.04 Samba Server timeout

  I am a beginner with servers. I checked the error logs for Samba and it appears that Samba is timing out when I transfer large files. I can successfully add PDFs for instance to my file server. However, I tried to add a large 1.2Gb video file and it did not succeed. This is the error in the log: smbd/process.c:244(read_packet_remainder) read_fd_with_timeout failed for client 0.0.0.0 read error = NT_STATUS_CONNECT$ Is there a way I can stop it from timing out? Any pointers would be great! Thanks!
