• "Add correct host key in known_hosts" / multiple ssh host keys per hostname?

- by Samuel Edwin Ward
Trying to ssh into a computer I control, I'm getting the familiar message: @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ @ WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED! @ @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOMEONE IS DOING SOMETHING NASTY! Someone could be eavesdropping on you right now (man-in-the-middle attack)! It is also possible that a host key has just been changed. The fingerprint for the RSA key sent by the remote host is [...]. Please contact your system administrator. Add correct host key in /home/sward/.ssh/known_hosts to get rid of this message. Offending RSA key in /home/sward/.ssh/known_hosts:86 RSA host key for [...] has changed and you have requested strict checking. Host key verification failed. I did indeed change the key. And I read a few dozen postings saying that the way to resolve this problem is by deleting the old key from the known_hosts file. But what I would like is to have ssh accept both the old key and the new key. The language in the error message ("Add correct host key") suggests that there should be some way to add the correct host key without removing the old one. I have not been able to figure out how to add the new host key without removing the old one. Is this possible, or is the error message just extremely misleading?

• SQL SERVER – The Story of a Lesser Known Startup Parameter in SQL Server – Guest Post by Balmukund Lakhani

- by Pinal Dave
This is a fantastic blog post from my dear friend Balmukund ( blog | twitter | facebook ). He had presented a fantastic session in our last UG and there were lots of requests from attendees that he blogs about it. Well, here is the blog post about the same very popular UG session. Let us read the entire blog post in the voice of the Balmukund himself. During my last session in SQL Bangalore User Group (Facebook) meeting, I was lucky enough to deliver a session on SQL Server Startup issue. The name of the session was “SQL Engine Starting Trouble – How to start?” From the feedback, I realized that one of the “not well known” startup parameter is “-m”. Okay, you might say “I know that this is used to start the SQL in single user mode”. But what you might not know is that you can pass a string with -m which has special meaning and use. I have used this parameter in my blog here but looks like not many of you have seen that. It happens most of the time when we want to start SQL Server in single user mode, someone else makes connection before you can. The only choice you have is to repeat same process again till you succeed. Some smart DBAs may disable the remote network protocols (TCP/IP and Named Pipes) of SQL Instance and allow only local connections to SQL. Once the activity is complete, our dear smart DBA has to remember to re-enable network protocols. Sometimes, it may be a local service or application getting connection to SQL before we can. There is a better way to deal with it. Yes, you have guessed it correctly: -m parameter which a string. Since I work with SQL Product Support team, I may know little more undocumented commands and parameters, but this is not an undocumented stuff. It’s already documented in books online. So in this blog, I am going to show a demo of its usage. As documentation shows, “Do not use this option as a security feature.” So please read this blog as knowledge enhancer and troubleshooting issues not security feature. In my laptop, I have a default instance of SQL Server 2012 and here is what we would in the configuration manager. Now, I would go ahead and stop SQL Service by selecting SQL Server (MSSQLServer) > Right Click > Stop. There are multiple ways to start SQL with startup parameter. 1) Use Net Start Command from command prompt Net Start MSSQLServer /mSQLCMD The above command is the simplest way to add startup parameter to SQL. This parameter would be cleared once we stop and start SQL. 2) Add Startup Parameter via configuration manager. Step is already listed here. We need to add -mSQLCMD If we compare 1 and 2, it’s clear that unless we modify startup parameter and remove -m, it would be in effect. 3) Start SQL Service via command line SQLServr.exe –mSQLCMD –s<InstanceName> Wait, what does SQLCMD mean with /m? It’s the instruction to SQL that start SQL Server in Single User Mode and allow only the application which is SQLCMD. Any other application would fail with Login Failed for User Error message. It would be important to note that string is case sensitive. This value should be picked up from application_name column from sys.dm_exec_sessions. I have made a connection using SQLCMD and as we can see it comes as upper case “SQLCMD”. If we want only management studio query windows to connect then we need to give -m” Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio – Query” as startup parameter. In below example, I have given it as SQLCMd (lower case d at the end) and we would notice that we would not be able to connect to SQL Instance. Above proves that parameter works as expected and it’s case sensitive. Error Log would show below information. How to get error log location? I have already blogged about it. Hope you have learned something new. • How do I install PHP 5.3 on CentOS?

- by fivelitresofsoda
I have to install PHP 5.3 on my CentOS server. If I do yum install php, the base repository installs 5.1.6 which is too old for the applications I need to install. So I've been trying to use the IUS repository, following the official instructions from IUS: root@linuxbox ~]# wget http://dl.iuscommunity.org/pub/ius/stable/Redhat/5/x86_64/ius-release-1-2.ius.el5.noarch.rpm root@linuxbox ~]# wget http://dl.iuscommunity.org/pub/ius/stable/Redhat/5/x86_64/epel-release-1-1.ius.el5.noarch.rpm root@linuxbox ~]# rpm -Uvh ius-release*.rpm epel-release*.rpm OK. Now I simply do yum install php53, etc. for all I need... but I get this error: Running rpm_check_debug Running Transaction Test Finished Transaction Test Transaction Check Error: file /usr/bin/php from install of php53u-cli-5.3.4-3.ius.el5.x86_64 conflicts with file from package php-cli-5.1.6-27.el5_5.3.x86_64 file /usr/bin/php-cgi from install of php53u-cli-5.3.4-3.ius.el5.x86_64 conflicts with file from package php-cli-5.1.6-27.el5_5.3.x86_64 file /usr/share/man/man1/php.1.gz from install of php53u-cli-5.3.4-3.ius.el5.x86_64 conflicts with file from package php-cli-5.1.6-27.el5_5.3.x86_64 file /etc/php.ini from install of php53u-common-5.3.4-3.ius.el5.x86_64 conflicts with file from package php-common-5.1.6-27.el5_5.3.x86_64 Error Summary ------------- I have no idea on how to solve this. I think I have to delete the base packages. However, as someone new to Linux, I don't know how to do that.

• How does one change the UUID of a Volume on Mac OS X 10.6?

- by Emmel
Does anyone know how to change the UUID of a Volume? The background for this question is that I have a duplicate UUID issue: I have /Volumes/OldMacHD with a UUID of XYZ. I have /Volumes/Mirror1 with a UUID of XYZ (same UUID! I bet that's because OldMacHD USED to be part of this mirror). I got these UUIDs via 'diskutil info /dev/thatdisknumber | grep UUID'. I'd like to change the UUID of 'Mirror1'. I discovered by chance the 'hfs.util' utility, since these are HFS volumes after all. The man page for hfs.util says that if you issue the -s flag, this changes the UUID. However, if you type hfs.util all by itself, it doesn't show you the -s option at all, just every option besides that! Grr. I tried it anyway: sudo /System/Library/Filesystems/hfs.fs/hfs.util -s /dev/disk4 (the raid volume). Nothing happens. No error message, no success message. UUID exactly the same. I tried it while the volume was unmounted. Any ideas?

• Can any iSCSI NAS appliance replicate / clone a LUN to an external drive?

- by Boden
I would like to backup using Windows Imaging to some kind of NAS appliance. I believe this will require the NAS to support iSCSI. I would then like the appliance to support the replication of the iSCSI LUN to an external eSATA or USB disk connected directly to the appliance. I've found plenty of NAS appliances that can do iSCSI and replicate to an external drive, but none that I've found thus far can do both at once. That is, the devices can do iSCSI, but then the replication feature doesn't work. The idea here is to backup to an appliance located in a secure office far away from the server room. Offsite backups to external hard drive could be managed from the appliance. The benefits of such a setup would be: 1) very unlikely that fire or random theft would affect both server-room backup and "remote" backup appliance 2) offsite backups could be managed by multiple trusted people without granting access to server room 3) Windows imaging provides poor man's deduplication, so each backup volume can contain a decent backup history. I understand why this would be a non-trivial thing to implement, but I'm wondering if such a thing exists? Preferably a tabletop, low to medium cost device. Alternative solutions welcome. NOTE: I'm backing up very few but very large files, so file replication is not a good option.

• How can I do an SELINUX filesystem relabel without rebooting first?

- by Skaperen
I can touch the file /.autorelabel and reboot and during the initialization coming back up it will do the SELINUX relabel for me. But I want to do this in a different situation where the system has just been copied to a hard drive image. I can chroot to the originating file tree, or chroot to the just populated device image and run it. I just can't find anything that says what to be run. This image is being made into an AMI on AWS EC2, and contains CentOS 6.3. But the time it takes to relabel is too long (6 minutes or more). I want to move the relabel to the image build where the extra time is not an issue (because it happens once instead of every time an AMI is launched). I can make this relabel be the very last thing just before the filesystem is unmounted for the last time until it becomes an AMI and will launch. I just need to know what to call to do it. I have searched man pages with no luck. I have searched system init scripts but where /.autorelabel is detected, it is unclear what is happening. Documents like http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.2/Deployment_Guide/sec-sel-fsrelabel.html only tell how to do things that still really do the work after a reboot. I need to have the work doing BEFORE the "reboot" (unmount, build AMI, and launch ready to go). The big point is ... yes there will be a reboot ... but I want the relabel work to be done before that so it won't be done every time an AMI is launched (because it takes so long).

• mrepo and grouplist/groupinstall?, mrepo not working as expected with group

- by user52874
All, I'm trying to set up mrepo so we can have internal repositories. After quite the slog, things seem to be working as expected EXCEPT for groups. From man createrepo: EXAMPLES Here is an example of a repository with a groups file. Note that the groups file should be in the same directory as the rpm packages (i.e. /path/to/rpms/comps.xml). createrepo -g comps.xml /path/to/rpms So here's what I'm doing: wget -c http://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/6/x86_64/os/repodata/comps-sl6-x86_64.xml cp comps-sl6-x86_64.xml /var/mrepo/SL6-x86_64/os/Packages/comps-sl6-x86_64.xml createrepo -g comps-sl6-x86_64.xml /var/mrepo/SL6-x86_64/os/Packages/ lots of output, no apparent errors or warnings BUT.. from a client: yum grouplist Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit Setting up Group Process Error: No group data available for configured repositories Here's /etc/mrepo.conf: ### Configuration file for mrepo ### The [main] section allows to override mrepo's default settings ### The mrepo-example.conf gives an overview of all the possible settings [main] srcdir = /var/mrepo wwwdir = /var/www/mrepo confdir = /etc/mrepo.conf.d arch = x86_64 mailto = root@localhost smtp-server = localhost pxelinux = /usr/lib/syslinux/pxelinux.0 tftpdir = /tftpboot #rhnlogin = username:password ### Any other section is considered a definition for a distribution ### You can put distribution sections in /etc/mrepo.conf.d ### Examples can be found in the documentation. • SOCKS5 proxy only, git wants to use ssh to xx.xx.xx.xx - forward? - mac os

- by AlexAtNet
I have SOCKS5 proxy configured and want to work with the git repository, originally cloned from ssh:... So when it tries to connect the error "Network is unreachable" appears. There are a few possible solutions: Use GIT URL rewriting and use https:// with proxy option. Probably should work well for github repositories. Use port forwarding and something like iptables/ipfw to rewrite address xx.xx.xx.xx:22 to 127.0.0.1:10yyy I'm trying to do #2. I have limited knowledge in this area, but know that I should use something like iptables. But then I discovered that on a Mac I should use ipfw. And then in the ipfw man page it told me "This utility is DEPRECATED. Please use pfctl(8) instead". So what I want to do is to rewrite xx.xx.xx.xx:22 to 127.0.0.1:10yyy and remove this rewriting. As I read, the pf.conf line should be rdr proto tcp from 127.0.0.1 to xx.xx.xx.xx port 22 -> 127.0.0.1 port 10yyy But how to add (and remove) this rule from command line?

• VNC as a Support Tool Over the Internet

- by dosboy
I'd like to set up an environment where I can use VNC to remotely support my clients over the internet. No VPNs involved. I've used the UltraVNC repeater in the past, but the problem is that it requires a dedicated Windows server. What I'd like to do is as follows: VNC Client (me) - NAT - Internet - NAT - VNC Server (the person I'm offering support to) I'd basically like the same functionality that the UltraVNC repeater offers, but the only internet environment I have to host something on is a Linux shared server (standard hosting - PHP, Apache, etc.). Requirements: Multiple platform support for both Client and Server - specifically Mac and Windows Allows for connection with multiple NATs involved (Client and Server side) Will allow me to use my existing hosting environment for any repeater that might be involved I believe the way this would work is that the Server (the person I'm offering support to) when online would connect to a listener on the internet. When they needed support I would connect my Client to the same listener, see them connected, and use the listener (man-in-the-middle) to piggyback my Client to connect to their Server. I'm open to using any software (not limiting myself to VNC) but would prefer a FOSS solution (which is why I'm leaning towards VNC). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Searching for the Perfect Developer’s Laptop.

- by mbcrump
I have been in the market for a new computer for several months. I set out with a budget of around $1200. I knew up front that the machine would be used for developing applications and maybe some light gaming. I kept switching between buying a laptop or a desktop but the laptop won because: With a Laptop, I can carry it everywhere and with a desktop I can’t. I searched for about 2 weeks and narrowed it down to a list of must-have’s : i7 Processor (I wasn’t going to settle for an i5 or AMD. I wanted a true Quad-core machine, not 2 dual-core fused together). 15.6” monitor SSD 128GB or Larger. – It’s almost 2011 and I don’t want an old standard HDD in this machine. 8GB of DDR3 Ram. – The more the better, right? 1GB Video Card (Prefer NVidia) – I might want to play games with this. HDMI Port – Almost a standard on new Machines. This would be used when I am on the road and want to stream Netflix to the HDTV in the Hotel room. Webcam Built-in – This would be to video chat with the wife and kids if I am on the road. 6-Cell Battery. – I’ve read that an i7 in a laptop really kills the battery. A 6-cell or 9-cell is even better. That is a pretty long list for a budget of around $1200. I searched around the internet and could not buy this machine prebuilt for under $1200. That was even with coupons and my company’s 10% Dell discount. The only way that I would get a machine like this was to buy a prebuilt and replace parts. I chose the Lenovo Y560 on Newegg to start as my base. Below is a top-down picture of it. Part 1: The Hardware The Specs for this machine: Color : GrayOperating System : Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bitCPU Type : Intel Core i7-740QM(1.73GHz)Screen : 15.6" WXGAMemory Size : 4GB DDR3Hard Disk : 500GBOptical Drive : DVD±R/RWGraphics Card : ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730Video Memory : 1GBCommunication : Gigabit LAN and WLANCard slot : 1 x Express Card/34Battery Life : Up to 3.5 hoursDimensions : 15.20" x 10.00" x 0.80" - 1.30"Weight : 5.95 lbs. This computer met most of the requirements above except that it didn’t come with an SSD or have 8GB of DDR3 Memory. So, I needed to start shopping except this time for an SSD. I asked around on twitter and other hardware forums and everyone pointed me to the Crucial C300 SSD. After checking prices of the drive, it was going to cost an extra $275 bucks and I was going from a spacious 500GB drive to 128GB. After watching some of the SSD videos on YouTube I started feeling better. Below is a pic of the Crucial C300 SSD. The second thing that I needed to upgrade was the RAM. It came with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, but it was slow. I decided to buy the Crucial 8GB (4GB x 2) Kit from Newegg. This RAM cost an extra $120 and had a CAS Latency of 7. In the end this machine delivered everything that I wanted and it cost around $1300. You are probably saying, well your budget was $1200. I have spare parts that I’m planning on selling on eBay or Anandtech. =) If you are interested then shoot me an email and I will give you a great deal mbcrump[at]gmail[dot]com. 500GB Laptop 7200RPM HDD 4GB of DDR3 RAM (2GB x 2) faceVision HD 720p Camera – Unopened In the end my Windows Experience Rating of the SSD was 7.7 and the CPU 7.1. The max that you can get is a 7.9. Part 2: The Software I’m very lucky that I get a lot of software for free. When choosing a laptop, the OS really doesn’t matter because I would never keep the bloatware pre-installed or Windows 7 Home Premium on my main development machine. Matter of fact, as soon as I got the laptop, I immediately took out the old HDD without booting into it. After I got the SSD into the machine, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit. The BIOS was out of date, so I updated that to the latest version and started downloading drivers off of Lenovo’s site. I had to download the Wireless Networking Drivers to a USB-Key before I could get my machine on my wireless network. I also discovered that if the date on your computer is off then you cannot join the Windows 7 Homegroup until you fix it. I’m aware that most people like peeking into what programs other software developers use and I went ahead and listed my “essentials” of a fresh build. I am a big Silverlight guy, so naturally some of the software listed below is specific to Silverlight. You should also check out my master list of Tools and Utilities for the .NET Developer. See a killer app that I’m missing? Feel free to leave it in the comments below. My Software Essential List. • Kill a tree, save your website? Content strategy in action, part III

- by Roger Hart
A lot has been written about how driving content strategy from within an organisation is hard. And that's true. Red Gate is pretty receptive to new ideas, so although I've not had a total walk in the park, it's been a hike with charming scenery. But I'm one of the lucky ones. Lots of people are involved in content, and depending on your organisation some of those people might be the kind who'll gleefully call themselves "stakeholders". People holding a stake generally want to stick it through something's heart and bury it at a crossroads. Winning them over is not always easy. (Richard Ingram has made a nice visual summary of how this can feel - Content strategy Snakes & ladders - pdf ) So yes, a lot of content strategy advocates are having a hard time. And sure, we've got a nice opportunity to get together and have a hug and a cry, but in the interim we could use a hand. What to do? My preferred approach is, I'll confess, brutal. I'd like nothing so much as to take a scorched earth approach to our website. Burn it, salt the ground, and build the new one right: focusing on clearly delineated business and user content goals, and instrumented so we can tell if we're doing it right. I'm never getting buy-in for that, but a boy can dream. So how about just getting buy-in for some small, tenable improvements? Easier, but still non-trivial. I sat down for a chat with our marketing and design guys. It seemed like a good place to start, even if they weren't up for my "Ctrl-A + Delete" solution. We talked through some of this stuff, and we pretty much agreed that our content is a bit more broken than we'd ideally like. But to get everybody on board, the problems needed visibility. Doing a visual content inventory Print out the internet. Make a Wall Of Content. Seriously. If you've already done a content inventory, you know your architecture, and you know the scale of the problem. But it's quite likely that very few other people do. So make it big and visual. I'm going to carbon hell, but it seems to be working. This morning, I printed out a tiny, tiny part of our website: the non-support content pertaining to SQL Compare I made big, visual, A3 blowups of each page, and covered a wall with them. A page per web page, spread over something like 6M x 2M, with metrics, right in front of people. Even if nobody reads it (and they are doing) the sheer scale is shocking. 53 pages, all told. Some are redundant, some outdated, some trivial, a few fantastic, and frighteningly many that are great ideas delivered not-quite-right. You have to stand quite far away to get it all in your field of vision. For a lot of today, a whole bunch of folks have been gawping in amazement, talking each other through it, peering at the details, and generally getting excited about content. Developers, sales guys, our CEO, the marketing folks - they're engaged. Will it last? I make no promises. But this sort of wave of interest is vital to getting a content strategy project kicked off. While the content strategist is a saucer-eyed orphan in the cupboard under the stairs, they're not getting a whole lot done. Of course, just printing the site won't necessarily cut it. You have to know your content, and be able to talk about it. Ideally, you'll also have page view and time-on-page metrics. One of the most powerful things you can do is, when people are staring at your wall of content, ask them what they think half of it is for. Pretty soon, you've made a case for content strategy. We're also going to get folks to mark it up - cover it with notes and post-its, let us know how they feel about our content. I'll be blogging about how that goes, but it's exciting. Different business functions have different needs from content, so the more exposure the content gets, and the more feedback, the more you know about those needs. Fingers crossed for awesome.

• bind9 dlz/mysql at ubuntu segfault libmysqlclient.so

- by Theos
I have a big problem. I installed the bind9 nameserver to three different computer. two Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS, and one Ubuntu 11.10 I compiled it 9.7.0, 9.7.3, 9.9.0 with this method: ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc/bind --localstatedir=/var \ --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info \ --enable-threads --enable-largefile --with-libtool --enable-shared --enable-static \ --with-openssl=/usr --with-gssapi=/usr --with-gnu-ld \ --with-dlz-mysql=yes --with-dlz-bdb=no \ --with-dlz-filesystem=yes --with-geoip=/usr make make install After the set up for dlz/mysql, the BIND server is working perfetctly until 5-30 minute long. • Tell VLC where to look for plugins.dat file

- by puk
I am trying to build vlc from source (I will include installation script below), but when I try to run vlc I get the following error main libvlc warning: cannot read /home/user/downloads/vlc3/vlc/src/.libs/vlc/plugins/plugins.dat (No such file or directory) Why is it even looking in that non existant directory? The plugins.dat file is in /usr/lib/vlc/plugins/. I tried export VLC_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/lib/vlc/plugins/ But it still looks in that non existent path. I can create a symbolic link, but that is a terrible way to do it. If in 6 months I delete my downloads folder, all of a sudden my vlc will break. Here is the script I am running to install: ./configure --enable-rpi-omxil --enable-dvbpsi --enable-x264 --enable-xcb --with-x --enable-xvideo --enable-sdl --enable-avcodec --enable-avformat --enable-swscale --enable-mad --enable-a52 --enable-libmpeg2 --enable-dvdnav --enable-faad --enable-vorbis --enable-ogg --enable-theora --enable-mkv --enable-freetype --enable-fribidi --enable-speex --enable-flac --enable-live555 --enable-caca --enable-skins2 --enable-alsa --enable-ncurses --enable-debug --enable-lirc --enable-live555 --enable-shout --enable-taglib --enable-vcdx --enable-realrtsp --enable-svg --enable-dvdread --enable-dc1394 --enable-twolame --enable-dirac --enable-aa --enable-jack --enable-bluray --enable-opencv --enable-sftp --enable-pulse --enable-projectm --enable-vsxu --enable-atmo --enable-glspectrum '--with-extra-libs=/usr/local/lib' '--with-extra-includes=/usr/local/include' '--x-libraries=/usr/local/lib' '--x-includes=/usr/local/include' '--prefix=/usr/local' '--mandir=/usr/local/man' '--infodir=/usr/local/info/' EDIT: I am using the following version: VLC media player 2.2.0-git Weatherwax (revision 2.1.0-git-1168-g5804dd1) And the --plugin-path option is no longer supported.

• Compile PHP 5.3.2 with intl extension on Snow Leopard 10.6.3

• Advice needed: warm backup solution for SQL Server 2008 Express?

- by Mikey Cee
What are my options for achieving a warm backup server for a SQL Server Express instance running a single database? Sitting beside my production SQL Server 2008 Express box I have a second physical box currently doing nothing. I want to use this second box as a warm backup server by somehow replicating my production database in near real time (a little bit of data loss is acceptable). The database is very small and resources are utilized very lightly. In the case that the production server dies, I would manually reconfigure my application to point to the backup server instead. Although Express doesn't support log shipping natively, I am thinking that I could manually script a poor man's version of it, where I use batch files to take the logs and copy them across the network and apply them to the second server at 5 minute intervals. Does anyone have any advice on whether this is technically achievable, or if there is a better way to do what I am trying to do? Note that I want to avoid having to pay for the full version of SQL Server and configure mirroring as I think it is an overkill for this application. I understand that other DB platforms may present suitable options (eg. a MySQL Cluster), but for the purposes of this discussion, let's assume we have to stick to SQL Server.

• My Right-to-Left Foot (T-SQL Tuesday #13)

- by smisner
As a business intelligence consultant, I often encounter the situation described in this month's T-SQL Tuesday, hosted by Steve Jones ( Blog | Twitter) – “What the Business Says Is Not What the Business Wants.” Steve posed the question, “What issues have you had in interacting with the business to get your job done?” My profession requires me to have one foot firmly planted in the technology world and the other foot planted in the business world. I learned long ago that the business never says exactly what the business wants because the business doesn't have the words to describe what the business wants accurately enough for IT. Not only do technological-savvy barriers exist, but there are also linguistic barriers between the two worlds. So how do I cope? The adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" is particularly helpful when I'm called in to help design a new business intelligence solution. Many of my students in BI classes have heard me explain ("rant") about left-to-right versus right-to-left design. To understand what I mean about these two design options, let's start with a picture: When we design a business intelligence solution that includes some sort of traditional data warehouse or data mart design, we typically place the data sources on the left, the new solution in the middle, and the users on the right. When I've been called in to help course-correct a failing BI project, I often find that IT has taken a left-to-right approach. They look at the data sources, decide how to model the BI solution as a _______ (fill in the blank with data warehouse, data mart, cube, etc.), and then build the new data structures and supporting infrastructure. (Sometimes, they actually do this without ever having talked to the business first.) Then, when they show what they've built to the business, the business says that is not what we want. Uh-oh. I prefer to take a right-to-left approach. Preferably at the beginning of a project. But even if the project starts left-to-right, I'll do my best to swing it around so that we’re back to a right-to-left approach. (When circumstances are beyond my control, I carry on, but it’s a painful project for everyone – not because of me, but because the approach just doesn’t get to what the business wants in the most effective way.) By using a right to left approach, I try to understand what it is the business is trying to accomplish. I do this by having them explain reports to me, and explaining the decision-making process that relates to these reports. Sometimes I have them explain to me their business processes, or better yet show me their business processes in action because I need pictures, too. I (unofficially) call this part of the project "getting inside the business's head." This is starting at the right side of the diagram above. My next step is to start moving leftward. I do this by preparing some type of prototype. Depending on the nature of the project, this might mean that I simply mock up some data in a relational database and build a prototype report in Reporting Services. If I'm lucky, I might be able to use real data in a relational database. I'll either use a subset of the data in the prototype report by creating a prototype database to hold the sample data, or select data directly from the source. It all depends on how much data there is, how complex the queries are, and how fast I need to get the prototype completed. If the solution will include Analysis Services, then I'll build a prototype cube. Analysis Services makes it incredibly easy to prototype. You can sit down with the business, show them the prototype, and have a meaningful conversation about what the BI solution should look like. I know I've done a good job on the prototype when I get knocked out of my chair so that the business user can explore the solution further independently. (That's really happened to me!) We can talk about dimensions, hierarchies, levels, members, measures, and so on with something tangible to look at and without using those terms. It's not helpful to use sample data like Adventure Works or to use BI terms that they don't really understand. But when I show them their data using the BI technology and talk to them in their language, then they truly have a picture worth a thousand words. From that, we can fine tune the prototype to move it closer to what they want. They have a better idea of what they're getting, and I have a better idea of what to build. So right to left design is not truly moving from the right to the left. But it starts from the right and moves towards the middle, and once I know what the middle needs to look like, I can then build from the left to meet in the middle. And that’s how I get past what the business says to what the business wants.

• Checksum for Protecting Read-Only Documents

- by Kim
My father owns a small business and has to hand over several year's worth of financial documents to his insurance's auditor. He's asked me to go through and make sure everything is "read-only" so the data (the files) absolutely, positively cannot be modified or manipulated (he's a bit paranoid). We're talking about 20,000 documents (emails, spreadsheets, etc.). My first inclination was to place everything inside of one root folder ("mydadsdocs/") and then write a script that recursively traversed its directory subtree and set the file permissions to read-only. But then I got to thinking: that's a lot of work for me to do to satisfy an old man who is just being paranoid, and afterall, if someone really wanted to modify a read-only file, it would be pretty easy to change file permissions anyways, soo.... Is there like a checksum I could run on the root folder, something that was very quick and easy, and that would basically "stamp" the data in that folder so if someone did change it, my father would have someone of knowing/proving it? If so, how? If not, any other recommendations that are quick, cheap (free) and effective?

• samba sync password with unix password on debian wheezy

- by Oz123
I installed samba on my server and I am trying to write a script to spare me the two steps to add user, e.g.: adduser username smbpasswd -a username My smb.conf states: # This boolean parameter controls whether Samba attempts to sync the Unix # password with the SMB password when the encrypted SMB password in the # passdb is changed. unix password sync = yes Further reading brought me to pdbedit man page which states: -a This option is used to add a user into the database. This com- mand needs a user name specified with the -u switch. When adding a new user, pdbedit will also ask for the password to be used. Example: pdbedit -a -u sorce new password: retype new password Note pdbedit does not call the unix password syncronisation script if unix password sync has been set. It only updates the data in the Samba user database. If you wish to add a user and synchronise the password that im- mediately, use smbpasswd’s -a option. So... now I decided to try adding a user with smbpasswd: 1st try, unix user still does not exist: root@raspberrypi:/home/pi# smbpasswd -a newuser New SMB password: Retype new SMB password: Failed to add entry for user newuser. 2nd try, unix user exists: root@raspberrypi:/home/pi# useradd mag root@raspberrypi:/home/pi# smbpasswd -a mag New SMB password: Retype new SMB password: Added user mag. # switch to user pi, and try to switch to mag root@raspberrypi:/home/pi# su pi pi@raspberrypi ~ $ su mag Password: su: Authentication failure So, now I am asking myself: how do I make samba passwords sync with unix passwords? where are samba passwords stored? Can someone help enlighten me?

I'm trying to get postscreen work. I've followed the man page and it's already running correctly for smtp. • Find out the type of an automounted device

- by Steve Bennett
I'm working on a system (Ubuntu Precise) with a mount defined in /etc/fstab as follows: /dev/vdb /mnt auto defaults, nobootwait, comment=cloudconfig 0 2 Originally I just wanted to find out if it's NFS (due to potential MySQL locking issues). Judging from man mount, it's not: If no -t option is given, or if the auto type is specified, mount will try to guess the desired type. Mount uses the blkid library for guessing the filesystem type; if that does not turn up anything that looks familiar, mount will try to read the file /etc/filesystems, or, if that does not exist, /proc/filesystems. All of the filesystem types listed there will be tried, except for those that are labeled "nodev" (e.g., devpts, proc and nfs). If /etc/filesystems ends in a line with a single * only, mount will read /proc/filesystems afterwards. But, out of curiosity now, how can I find out more about what type of device it actually is? (For context, this is a VM running on OpenStack. The device is a 60Gb allocation mounted from somewhere - but I don't know how.)` EDIT Including answers here: $ mount /dev/vdb on /mnt type ext3 (rw,_netdev) $ df -T /dev/vdb ext3 61927420 2936068 55845624 5% /mnt

• What's the difference between Host and HostName in SSH Config?

- by Bill Jobs
The man page says this: Host Host Restricts the following declarations (up to the next Host keyword) to be only for those hosts that match one of the patterns given after the keyword. If more than one pattern is provided, they should be separated by whitespace. A single `*' as a pattern can be used to provide global defaults for all hosts. The host is the hostname argument given on the command line (i.e. the name is not converted to a canonicalized host name before matching). A pattern entry may be negated by prefixing it with an exclamation mark (`!'). If a negated entry is matched, then the Host entry is ignored, regardless of whether any other patterns on the line match. Negated matches are therefore useful to provide exceptions for wildcard matches. See PATTERNS for more information on patterns. HostName HostName Specifies the real host name to log into. This can be used to specify nicknames or abbreviations for hosts. If the hostname contains the character sequence `%h', then this will be replaced with the host name specified on the command line (this is useful for manipulating unqualified names). The default is the name given on the com- mand line. Numeric IP addresses are also permitted (both on the command line and in HostName specifications). For example, when I want to create an SSH Config for GitHub, what should Host and HostName be respectively?
