  I need to recompile php on a Fedora server because I need to use the --enable-zip flag. When trying to install the devel package, I get the following message. • Python: Find X to Y in a list of strings.

  I have a list of maybe a 100 or so elements that is actually an email with each line as an element. The list is slightly variable because lines that have a \n in them are put in a separate element so I can't simply slice using fixed values. I essentially need a variable start and stop phrase (needs to be a partial search as well because one of my start phrases might actually be Total Cost: $13.43 so I would just use Total Cost:.) Same thing with the end phrase. I also do not wish to include the start/stop phrases in the returned list. In summary: email = ['apples','bananas','cats','dogs','elephants','fish','gee'] start = 'ban' stop = 'ele' the magic here new_email = ['cats','dogs'] NOTES While not perfect formatting of the email, it is fairly consistent so there is a slim chance a start/stop phrase will occur more than once. There are also no blank elements.

• Hung Java JVM failing to respond to kill -3

  I have a Java VM that is hanging "randomly". I quote the randomly bit, because there is obviously a reason that the VM is hanging, but the hang does not occur periodically. We have the same software running in different customer environments and in those environments the JVM is not hanging. In the process of attempting to troubleshoot the hang the process exists with zero CPU utilization. I then attempt to execute kill -3 and the kill command hangs. No JVM Thread Dump is produced. I have spent time instrumenting the code to periodically log the thread stack traces hoping to catch the JVM in a state that would indicate where the issue lies, but so far this attempt has not born much fruit. Unfortunately I have not been able to reproduce this issue in my lab environment so I am limited by what can be done at the Customer site. The OS's in question are Red Hat Enterprise 5.4 and SUSE 10 running java version 1.6.0_05-b13 Has anyone had this problem? Any ideas on why kill -3 is failing to produce a Java Thread Dump? Thanks!

• NFS-shared file-system is locking up

  Our NFS-shared file-system is locking up. Please feel free to ask any questions you feel relevant. :) At the time, there are a lot of processes in "disk sleep" state, and the load averages on our machines sky-rocket. The machines are responsive on SSH, but our the majority of our websites (apache+mod_php) just hang, as does our email system (exim+dovecot). Any websites which don't require write access to the file-system continue to operate. The load averages continue to rise until some kind of time-out is reached, but for at least 10-15 minutes. I've seen load averages over 800, yet the machines are still responsive for actions which don't require writing to the shared file-system. I've been investigating a variety of options, which have all turned out to be red-herrings: nagios, proftpd, bind, cron tasks. Assume that some magic stops the input; so the length of a list is not known in advance.(alternative solution: a function which creates explicitly a fixed list. However, all other function can not assume any knowledge about the length of lists). Necessary utilities( additional functions to be created): a function which deallocates the memory used for lists and a function which prints the content of the list. let the element of lists contain a letter. Design a function which create a copy of such list. can't also understand the list line !!!!!???

• SDCC and malloc() - allocating much less memory than is available

  When I run compile this code with SDCC 3.1.0, and run it on an Amstrad CPC 464 (under emulation, with WinCPC 0.9.26 running on Wine): void _test_malloc() { long idx = 0; while (1) { if (malloc(5)) { printf("%ld\r\n", ++idx); } else { printf("done"); break; } } } ... it consistently taps out at 92 malloc()s. I make that 460 bytes, which leads me to a couple of questions: What is malloc() doing on this system? I was sort of hoping for an order of magnitude more storage even on a 64kB system The behaviour is consistent on 64kB systems and 128kB systems; do I have to perform some sort of magic to access the additional memory, like manual bank switching?

• EC2 AMI won't boot after edit

  I did something stupid, I got a new laptop and copied everything over to the new one, then wiped the old one clean. Then I realized that I forgot to copy the private key out of .ssh that I use to connect to my AWS EBS backed instance. So I can't log in to my custom AMI. So I created a new Volume from the Snapshot of the AMI, then started up a public instance and attached the Volume to it, edit the sshd_config to allow for password log in. Unmounted the volume, detached it, made a snapshot of it, then made a new AMI from the snapshot. The new AMI launches, but never passes the Status Checks and is not reachable. What am I doing wrong? Or alternatively how can I fix my problem? • My yum repository able to search packages, but not able to install it in RHEL?

• Log and debug/decrypt an windows application's HTTPS traffic

  I've got a proprietary windows-only application that uses HTTPS to speak with a (also proprietary, undocumented) web service. To ultimately be able to use the web service's functionality on my linux machines, I want to reverse-engineer the web service API by analyzing the requests sent by the application. Now the question: How can I decrypt and log the HTTPS traffic? I know of several solutions which don't apply in my case: Fiddler is a man-in-the-middle HTTPS proxy which I cannot use since the application doesn't support proxies. Also, I do not (yet) know if it works with self-signed server certificates, which I doubt. Wireshark is able to decrypt SSL streams if you have the server's private certificate, which I don't have. any browser extension since the application is not a browser If I remember correctly, there have been some trojans that capture online banking information by hooking into/replacing the window's crypto API. Since the machine is mine, low level changes are possible. Maybe there is a non-trojan (white-hat) network log application out there which does the same? There is a blackhat presentation with some details available to read. They refer to Microsoft Research Detour for easy API hooking.

• Is recursion preferred compare to iteration in multicore era?

  Or say, do multicore CPUs process recursion faster than iteration? Or it simply depends on how one language runs on the machine? like c executes function calls with large cost, comparing to doing simple iterations. I had this question because one day I told one of my friend that recursion isn't any amazing magic that can speed up programs, and he told me that with multicore CPUs recursion can be faster than iteration. EDIT: If we consider the most recursion-loved situation (data structure, function call), is it even possible for recursion to be faster?

• P2V Wouldn't Boot, Rebuilt initrd, Need to Clean Up

  We have a CentOS 5.4 server (build 2.6.18-164.el5xen). We went to P2V this server so we can have redundancy, the physical only has one PSU. The P2V only completed 99% of the way, we have a VMWare ticket opened, but they marked the ticket as low priority. I was able to boot into a rescue disc of Red Hat 5.4 and rebuild the initrd with the help of this blog post. Now the only issue is the original server had a modified initrd, which was also from a different OS build and made by an outside provider. We do not have a document outlining modifications. My question is, is it at all possible to copy the initrd off of the physical server and replace it on the virtual and some how have the virtual machine boot? Thanks for any input. Edit: I copied the initrd img from the physical and it recreated the original issue. • C#: why Base class is allowed to implement an interface contract without inheriting from it?

  I've stumbled upon this "feature" of C# - the base class that implements interface methods does not have to derive from it. Example: public interface IContract { void Func(); } // Note that Base does **not** derive from IContract public abstract class Base { public void Func() { Console.WriteLine("Base.Func"); } } // Note that Derived does *not* provide implementation for IContract public class Derived : Base, IContract { } What happens is that Derived magically picks-up a public method Base.Func and decides that it will implement IContract.Func. What is the reason behind this magic? IMHO: this "quasi-implementation" feature is very-unintuitive and make code-inspection much harder. What do you think?

• Emacs with CEDET changes copy/paste to include trailing spaces?

  I just started trying out CEDET today, which I really like, but it seems to do something completely worthless with respect to copying/pasting. If I highlight some stuff and copy it, when it gets pasted back the newlines are eliminated and there is just a ton of trailing whitespace on each line. This is really worthless. All I have in my .emacs right now for CEDET is the following: (load-file "~/.emacs.d/cedet-1.0pre7/common/cedet.el") (require 'semantic-ia) (require 'semantic-gcc) (semantic-load-enable-code-helpers) Does anybody know how to turn this off? I can't find anything about this except that the CEDET main page says it has "magic copy & paste".

• Scalable way of doing self join with many to many table

  I have a table structure like the following: user id name profile_stat id name profile_stat_value id name user_profile user_id profile_stat_id profile_stat_value_id My question is: How do I evaluate a query where I want to find all users with profile_stat_id and profile_stat_value_id for many stats? I've tried doing an inner self join, but that quickly gets crazy when searching for many stats. I've also tried doing a count on the actual user_profile table, and that's much better, but still slow. Is there some magic I'm missing? I have about 10 million rows in the user_profile table and want the query to take no longer than a few seconds. Is that possible?

  hey regex guru's I have a data column that contains a substring similar to this: 'This is a string with ID=123 contained inside' i need to replace the ID=123 with another fixed string say ID=1 i have a working REPLACE call that swaps out the values correctly, but this only works on a known original id number. I can extend to make it work when the number of digits are known by using some substr magic, however, the id number may have an arbitrary number of digits, so i'm thinking regex. any help with the regex magix to grab the entire ID=999 substring no matter how many digits would be very helpful. thanks

• If free() knows the length of my array, why can't I ask for it in my own code?

  I know that it's a common convention to pass the length of dynamically allocated arrays to functions that manipulate them: void initializeAndFree(int* anArray, int length); int main(){ int arrayLength = 0; scanf("%d", &arrayLength); int* myArray = (int*)malloc(sizeof(int)*arrayLength); initializeAndFree(myArray, arrayLength); } void initializeAndFree(int* anArray, int length){ int i = 0; for (i = 0; i < length; i++) { anArray[i] = 0; } free(anArray); } but if there's no way for me to get the length of the allocated memory from a pointer, how does free() "automagically" know what to deallocate? Why can't I get in on the magic, as a C programmer? Where does free() get its free (har-har) knowledge from?

I am having some trouble being able to have an iterator go through the list and when the iterator reach, let us say every 5th object, it should insert a '\n' right there.   I want to use an Enum value for the types of VaryByCustom parameters I will support, is it possible to do this? I tried setting it in the page itself <%@ OutputCache Duration="600" VaryByParam="none" VaryByCustom='<%=VaryByCustomType.IsAuthenticated.ToString(); %>' %> But this returned the entire literal string "<%=VaryByCustomType.IsAuthenticated.ToString(); %>" inside my global.asax is there any way to do this either on the page itself or from the codebehind? Or is this just something I have to accept is purely magic strings and nothing I can do to add type safety to it?
