    Camera phones get a lot of grief for being underpowered but in this video tutorial the crew at SLR Lounge shows how basic technique and a good eye overcome all. Last year over at the photo blog FStoppers they put together a video showing off how you could use the iPhone as a fashion camera–essentially arguing that the camera wasn’t as important as the photographer. A lot of people said “Well yeah, but you had professional models and thousands of dollars in lighting equipment!” in reaction to the video. In turn the crew at SLR Lounge decided to make their own video showing that using only an iPhone camera and two reflectors (as well as an attractive but informal model). It of course helps to have some side kicks to help hold up your reflectors but the point still stands about modern camera phones being perfectly capable of good photos.     Given that I am a PHP programmer and open-source is a must, what would be the best and practical programming language to use for all of the following: A desktop/cross-platform application. I've read that with HTML5, creating offline apps are possible? A web application. Android and iPhone/iPad apps. I am leaning towards using Python but I am not sure if it is possible to use it alone for all of them. There are other languages that I am also looking at like Ruby, Scala and Java.     My details: Thinkpad T410 GOBI 2000 WWAN Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome3 In Ubnutu 12.04, Debian Squeeze and Debian Wheezy my GOBI2000 works like a charm but in Ubuntu 12.10 the connection wizard doesn't show up. I configured the card the normal way: added thnkpad ppa install gobi-loader-tp copied firmware files to /lib/firmware/gobi/ (the same files work under debian) The card is correctly recognised and my SIM is detected too. the only problem is when I try to setup a new connection the wizard doesn't start. simply nothing happens. Any idea?

    It is really shaping up to be everything I had hoped.  Prizes are stacked up behind me.  Food is in place.  I have a set of wonderful volunteers beside me.  The event has been full for weeks.  I will not be doing any official blogging for this event here.  You will have to watch the official blog for that http://silverlightpalooza.dynamitesilverlight.com/ I plan to post pictures and descriptions of everyone’s projects during the event to that site.  It is going to be wonderful fun.  Shawn will be filming part of the time so stay tuned for that also.  We have some great plans in place!!!  I wish everyone could join us and am very excited for those who signed up in time.

  • Choosing a mobile advertising mediator over going it alone

    We have finished our first game for IOS/Android. We would like to give it away adding ads to it. I have been reading a lot about the subject but it is a bit overwhelming for starters. From what I read, it seems there are some important points to have into consideration: 1) Do as much localization as you can (target your audience with ads they could be interested for the zone they live in). 2) Do not over advertise in your application. At this moment we have decided to go with AdMob. It seems an easy option to setup for beginners and have a good set of ad networks. My question is, will we earn less for example for iAds using adMob than implementing iAds without a mediator? Are adMob paying less than others (this is what I remember for some artilces I read)?. It would be nice to hear from people with experience on this to let us light our way a bit.
