  • Damn Small Linux - Setting system-wide proxy

    I've just installed DSL on virtualbox. The network works fine. However, to connect to the internet, I need to use a proxy with authentication. I can do this in the brower, but I need to allow other command line utilities to access the internet too. Is there a way that I can set a system-wide proxy with authentication information (username/password) on DSL?

  • Linux/Gentoo: KDM, startx & session problem

    I'm using startx in my .bashrc file to start X (I'm using KDE 4.3.4) when I login at tty1 instead of using a display manager like KDM. Now the problem is since KDM is not running I'm not able to use the shut down button from the KDE menu (because it needs root privileges to do so, of course) and some other features are gone as well. Is there a way to start KDM when I run startx in my .bashrc, like just running KDM in the background? The point is that I want no login display, so I'm sure there must be a way to just start KDM silently. Regards & I hope for answers!

    I was curious and confused that what exactly is the behaviour of CTRl+Z. I know, If a process in running in foreground, and we press ctrl+z, it goes to background. But what exactly happens. Does it keep doing it's job, or does it get suspended, and stopped at the point where it was. Can someone please explain. It seems to have lots of features that I don't need (including FTP) but I couldn't find any mention of the ability to telnet or SSH to it. If telneting or SSH-ing to it isn't possible, do you know whether it is possible to configure via its web interface a script that can periodically back it up via its USB port? (while still functioning as NAS, of course)

    In Ubuntu Lucid Lynx RC, I got NVidia's TwinView to work with 2 monitors in a single video card. But when I use the same monitors but split them between the video cards I can't make TwinView work and it starts a X server for each monitor. I want the same effect I had with one video card.

    I want to cat a /dev/video0 device output (Transport Stream) into a temporary ring buffer. In fact i do not want that the file is growing over the time. Simultaneously access is not possible. So the purpose is to have a file (buffer, Fifo, whatever) to be accessed by more than one consumer (example: tail -f, mencoder, VLC, ....). Some kind of scenario: 1# cat /dev/video0 > mybuffer.ts And then multiple access 2# tail -f mybuffer.ts > extract1.ts 2# tail -f mybuffer.ts > extract2.ts 3# ffmpeg ... Does someone have an idea how to do something like this?

  • Unmount Mass Storage USB Device from the Command Line in Linux

    I've searched high and low, and can't figure this one out. I have a older Olympus Camera (2001 or so). When I plug in the USB connection, I get the following log output: $ dmesg | grep sd [20047.625076] sd 21:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg7 type 0 [20047.627922] sd 21:0:0:0: [sdg] Attached SCSI removable disk Secondly, the drive is not mounted in the FS, but when I run gphoto2 I get the following error: $ gphoto2 --list-config *** Error *** An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not lock the device'): Camera is already in use. *** Error (-60: 'Could not lock the device') *** What command will unmount the drive. For example in Nautilus, I can right click and select "Safely Remove Device". After doing that, the /dev/sg7 and /dev/sdg devices are removed. Some things I've tried already are sdparm and sg3_utils, however I am unfamiliar with them, so it's possible I just didn't find the right command.

    Hi i have a java application that starts/stops/restart Apache and it should also check for its status, so i have looked how checking for status of apache and it appears that you have to check for the state of the service, problem is that when i use apachectl start the service httpd is still not started, is that normal ? i check for the service state by doing service httpd status . My question is, if I gzip the file, will it require more space on the drive that it resides? Or can I direct the output to the drive with available space?

  • Linux screenshots, how to take them like a mac

    I run opensuse 11.2 KDE 4.3.5. I do not have a mac, but I've used one and really like the one feature of the screenshots. Specifically, Command+Shift+3 which saves the screenshot to the desktop without having to open a program or anything like that. Is there any way to do this in KDE, Ksnapshot is nice, but I'd like not to have to click the button every time. Thanks PS. I've tried the command line Import and it always gives me some X server not confectioned or something, So thats not an option.

  • sound volume increase beyond 100% whenever possible on linux

    Some audio output from files or streams is too low. It is obvious that hardware is able to play the same sounds but louder but because of the data it just plays it at some low level even at 100% volume. Vlc can generally increase the volume of a file up to 200%. Is there a way to do the same thing VLC does system-wide and if possible for an arbitrary v percentage value. If there is no application that does this, where should i look into for libs to do it myself or what code should i modify(eg code in the alsamixer) thank you Note: Asked the same thing on stackoverflow and they directed me here.

    I am running on Windows 8 and installed Lubuntu 13.04 in VirtualBox. I cannot login to DD-WRT in Virtualbox. I can login to DD-WRT on Windows 8. I have used the same credentials and tried many times, but to no avail. How can I login successfully to DD-WRT in VirtualBox? I have even tried searching on the Internet but I could not find any relevant solutions. Additional Information: Using Chromium ( I have tried it on Firefox and it does not work ) Enabled secure shell: but it still does not work.     I installed Ubuntu edition (10.04) on my windows 7, completely eliminating it to the original installation. After I was forced to reverse the process, but could not find tools or explanations of how to do it. To clarify the equipment, it is: a netbook, acer, no optical drive cd / dvd, the process should be fully via USB. I hope I was clear enough, count on the support of you. Depois fui forçado à reverter o processo, mas não encontrei ferramentas ou explicações de como fazê-lo.   • Tri-head linux system with Xmonad: is it possible to have HW acceleration

    What means there exists to have three monitors, all controlled by Xmonad and have hardware 3D acceleration as well? I had the pleasure of using three monitors earlier this year, and while Xmonad and Xinerama handle three monitors easily, I had to throw in an extra display driver, and also let go of Nvidia's own TwinView (which is a hack on Xinerama). This left me with no HW acceleration and some flickering as double buffering wouldn't work with certain applications. However, the three monitors handle so beautifully that I had hard time coming back to two. I understand the easiest way to achieve HW-accelerated tri-head combo is to split into two Xorgs. I wouldn't be able to switch windows between the Xorgs, so I'm not really into this solution. What's more, having a cheap and old PCI card along with even slightly better PCIe seemed to slow things down. Even if I occasionally disabled the third monitor from Xorg configure, I couldn't get HW acceleration to work. Only after I physically disconnected the old PCI card, I could get the games back in business. Would a Matrox Dual/Tri-head2go and a powerful Nvidia GPU do the trick? I understand Xmonad can be configured to "believe" that a "single" (as Dualhead2Go will merge) 3360x1050 display is actually two different ones? So that Xmonad's Mod-w and Mod-e would work properly there.

  • Two parts: linux startup script to connect to bluetooth and cron to keep it connected

    I have a mini bluetooth keyboard and a Raspberry Pi running a Debian-based distro. I know the MAC address of the keyboard but for this question, let's just use AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF. Right now I have to have a wired keyboard connected as well as my bluetooth dongle for the mini-keyboard and on the wired keyboard, I have to run the following when the device boots up: sudo hidd --connect AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF If the device goes idle for too long, then the bluetooth disconnects and I have to pull out my wired keyboard and retype that same command. What I'm looking for it a way to have that command run at startup and a way to sense if it gets disconnected so that it will auto reconnect. The annoying thing is that they keyboard has to be in pairing mode (even though it has already been paired) when I run that command, otherwise it tells me the host is down. So perhaps the script needs to prevent it from disconnecting due to inactivity, otherwise I'll have to put it back in pairing mode to reconnect. So to recap: - A script to connect at startup (I can make sure to put the keyboard into pairing mode before turning it on) - A script to prevent it from disconnecting (maybe some sort of signal to send to it every 60 seconds or something?) Any help with this is greatly appreciated! StackOverflow is always the best place to find answers to weird questions! I've been searching long and hard for an answer, but finally had to resort to coming here! Thanks!

  • Backup Linux Root Partition (Fedora 12)

    I setup my partition scheme to have an extra partition the size of my / partion. I have a separate home directory partition. Essentially, I will be doing things that might make my OS unstable so I'd like to backup the OS state but without bothering my home directory. Can I just backup (maybe with dd?) my root partition to another partition on the HDD? I know to restore it I would have to boot up with a livecd or something and do the reverse procedure. I want this to be as simple and require the least amount of external hardware as possible.

  • find command in Linux to locate pdf files

    My goal is to find all pdf files on a remote machine, so I resort to the useful command find. So I type find ~ *.pdf or find ~ "*.pdf" and I get nothing. I do the same on my machine and I get nothing. I do a regular search from the menu on my machine and I find quite a few pdf files. Would somebody please tell me what am I doing wrong?

    I have two local machines connected to each other via wired ethernet and one of those machines is also connected to a wifi network which provides internet access. A pseudo-graphical representation of the topology is as follows: (PC2)----------(PC1)---------(Wifi Gateway) 192.168.2.x 10.0.0.x The configuration on PC2 is: iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.2.2 network 192.168.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.2.1 ...and the configuration on PC1 is: iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.2.1 network 192.168.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.2.1 On PC1, I've added a default route for wlan0 as I couldn't access the internet otherwise: route add default gw 10.0.0.1 wlan0 And also tried setting the gateway for the 192.168.2.x network using: route add -net 192.168.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 10.0.0.1 But I still can't access internet from PC2. Edit I don't have access to the wifi gateway.
