• I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around handling the Activity Lifecycle...

  So it seems i've created a fatal flaw and coded an app before understanding/handling rotation/lifecycle events.. Currently, all of my code is in onCreate of each activity. I've read a lot of lifecycle tutorials online, including the official dev guide info, but i'm still having an almost unbelievably hard time trying to wrap my head around the rotation/lifecycle events/methods and when to use them correctly. For example, my app currently has an activity that opens the db, inserts a record, then closes the db.. if i rotate my screen on this activity, the data is re-entered into the db. Using the available lifecycle events (onPause(), onResume(), etc..), how would I prevent this db call from happening again? Would I have to pass a variable through the state saying that the db call has been done, and not to do it again? Thanks in advance..

  I don't know whether all coffeescript compilers wrap their scripts in anonymous functions, but that's what I see Rails doing. How can I disable this encapsulation? I want to put several initializing functions in a single coffeescript file, then call one of them from an on-page <script> tag (so that each page calls a different initializer). This can't be if the initializing functions are encapsulated. • Online Game programming in Google App Engine: AI

  I am currently in the planning stages of a game for google app engine, but cannot wrap my head around how I am going to handle AI. I intend to have persistant NPCs that will move about the map, but short of writing a program that generates the same XML requests I use to control player actions, than run it on another server I am stuck on how to do it. I have looked at the Task Queue feature, but due to long running processes not being an option on the App engine, I am a little stuck. I intend to run multiple server instances with 200+ persistant NPC entities that I will need to update. Most action is slowly roaming around based on player movements/concentrations, and attacking close range players(you can probably guess the type of game im developing)

  Hi, I am working on a module whose purpose is to process Java exceptions and decide upon a strategy for dealing with them. The exceptions could be things I know about (explicit business exceptions eg TransformationException) or more general environmental stuff (JMS errors, IO errors etc) The facts inserted into the knowledge base are all the same class, and wrap (contain) an Exception. I want to write a rule that will explicitly match the exceptions I know how to deal with (eg TransformationException) and have another rule that catches 'everything else' The problem seems to me to be that for a fact containing a TransformationException, both rules will fire and the output will be uncertain. How would I go about writing such exclusive rules without relying on salience to steer the order of execution (this seems to be bad practice from what I have read)? I have a solution in place that I am not happy with whereby the outcome depends on the order in which the rules are defined in my .drl.

  I'm writing my first iPhone app, and I've been exploring the design patterns in Cocoa and Objective-C. I come from a background of client-side web development, so I'm trying to wrap my head around delegates. Specifically, I don't see why delegate objects are needed instead of event handlers. For instance, when the user presses a button, it is handled with an event (UITouchUpInside), but when the user finishes inputting to a text box and closes it with the 'Done' button, the action is handled by calling a method on the text box's delegate (textFieldShouldReturn). Why use a delegate method instead of an event? I also notice this in the view controller with the viewDidLoad method. Why not just use events?

I know it's not a good idea but I don't have a good alternative. • Can a function defined in a bookmarklet be called from a page-level script?

  I have a bookmarklet that needs to open a new window/tab. In order to avoid the popup blocker, I need to call the window.open() method directly in the bookmarklet ie: at the browser-level. However, I want to keep the bookmarklet updatable by loading external Javascript files. To do this, the bookmarklet needs to append script nodes to the DOM. If i were to put window.open() code in one of these externally loaded scripts, the popup blocker would block it since its page-level. What I want to know is if I can create a wrapper function around window.open() in my bookmarklet, then call it from the externally loaded script? What is the scope and what are the permissions on a wrap such as this?

  I have a generated HTML file which has large blocks of text with span's sprinkled throughout it with generated class names: This <span class="21232">an example</span> of what <span class="332423"> I'm talking</span> about. There are span's with <span class="21232"> generated ID's </span>. Now, what I'm seeking to do, is if I hover over any of my spans, they will add a border to not only that span, but all other spans that share that same class. So, if I were to hover over the first span, it would wrap a border around "an example" and "generated ID's" because the first and third span share the same class name. I was pretty sure I couldn't do it in straight CSS. Is this possible using jQuery? If so, can anyone point me in the right direction for doing this as simply as possible?

  As a very novice Java programmer, I probably should not mess with that kind of things. Unfortunately, I'm using a library which have a method that accepts a ByteBuffer object and throws when I try to use it: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException: Unable to retrieve native address from ByteBuffer object Is it because I'm not using a non-direct buffer? edit: There's not a lot of my code there. The library I'm using is jNetPcap, and I'm trying to dump a packet to file. My code takes an existing packet, and extract a ByteBuffer out of it: byte[] bytes = m_packet.getByteArray(0, m_packet.size()); ByteBuffer buffer = ByteBuffer.wrap(bytes); Then it calls on of the dump methods of jNetPcap that takes a ByteBuffer.

• jQuery dialog box not opening 2nd time

  I found this thread which basically has the same issue I have. But their solution is not working for me. The dialog appears the first time I click the submit button, but not the 2nd time. I'm opening the dialog box after a form submission. UPDATE I finally got it working.   I have an NSTextField bound to some object "zoom" property. In this object's class implementation, I have the following - (void)setZoom:(CGFloat)zoom { _zoom = MAX(0, MIN(10, zoom)); } If I write "-5" in the textfield, setZoom: will be called with "-5" as argument and _zoom will be set to 0. Then problem is that the textfield is not updating itself and it shows "-5" instead of re-reading the property value it has just set. If I do myObject.zoom = -5; in code, the text field will display 0 correctly. I tried to wrap _zoom =... inside willChangeValueForKey/didChangeValueForKey calls but it didn't change anything.

  Funny, how sometimes the simple things bite me in the behind. I can bind a DataGrid nicely to a Collection of some arbitrary class, using a DataGridTextColumn like this: <DataGridTextColumn Header="Name" Binding="{Binding Name}"/> Now I want to bind a DataGrid to a simple Collection. So since there is no property "Name" or something like that to bind to, how do I write the binding: <DataGridTextColumn Header="Name" Binding="{Binding ???}"/> String has no Property "Value" or something like that. And if I just write {Binding } I'll end up with a one-way-binding, unable to write changes back to the Collection. Thinking about it, I think it is not possible to bind to a collection, so I do need to wrap my string into a class? Or is there a way?

• Scrolling through list element causes text elements to scroll as well

  I'm using a list element with variableRowHeight and word-wrap set to true like in the example below: http://blog.flexexamples.com/2007/10/27/creating-multi-line-list-rows-with-variable-row-heights/ When I scroll through the list with a mouse scrollwheel the text in the listItems also scroll. I know that this is to do with the height of the textField... but I am unsure how to best resolve this issue. Any thoughts are appreciated! • How can I center a box of unknown width in CSS?

  I have this html: <div class="object-box"> <img ... /> <span class="caption">This is the caption</span> </div> Which is accompanied with this CSS: .object-box .caption, .object-box img { display: block; } .object-box { border: 1px solid; } I would like the surrounding div to shrink-wrap to its contents. I can achieve this by using float: ... or display: inline-block. However, I'd also like it to be centered on the page, using margin: auto. The two approaches don't seem to be compatible. Is it possible to create such a shrink-wrapped, centered container, without adding a wrapper element?

• Regular Expression; Find whether a line contains any word with more than X characters.

  Hi, I am trying to use a Validator on a ASP.NET site and need to find whether the Street Address textbox contains a valid entry. Entries with words that are longer than X characters (in this case 25, with no punctuation or spaces) will cause the HTML on a printed A4 page to not wrap properly and therefore not to confrom to certain sizes correctly pushing the margins off. For a street address I want to match that something like "201 Long Road" is valid but "235 ReallyLongAndNarrowWindingRoadBesideTheRiver Street" is invalid. Using a Microsoft .Net Regular Expression Validator I need to know what the RegEx pattern might be. I think if it does find a match the Validator will fire correctly however if there is no match the Validator won't fire and the Update button (in this case) won't fire. Since Street addresses can contain Capital Letters and numbers etc. it will need to accomodate for that and also Spaces, Commas, Semi-Colons and Colons and Hyphens are valid characters too. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am really stuck with this problem. Thanks, David

  I would like to have a function that can "wrap" any other function call. In this particular case, it would allow me to write some more generic transaction handling around some specific operations. I can write this for any particular number of arguments, e.g. for one argument: Public Shared Sub WrapFunc(Of T)(ByVal f As Action(Of T), ByVal arg As T) ' Test some stuff, start transaction f(arg) ' Test some stuff, end transaction End Sub ... but I was hoping to have this handle any number of arguments without having to have duplicate code for 0 args, 1 arg, 2 args, etc. Is there a way of doing this?

• How do would you use jQuery's .each() to apply the same script to each element with the same class?

  I have a with multiple cart items listed. I have a "x-men logo" looking remove button that I want to fade-in next to the item when the customer hovers over a cart item. I had no issue getting this to work when there is only one item in the list. However, when there are multiple items in the cart, the jQuery operates funky. It still does the fade in, but only when I hover over the last item in the cart, and of course all of the "remove X" images become visible. Argh... So i searched around and think the .each() is my savior. I have been trying to get it to work, with no luck. My script just breaks when I attempt to implement it. Anyone have any pointers on this *.each() thing and how to implement it into my script?* I have tried putting a cartItem.each(function(){ around the mouseEnter/mouseLeave events (and used some $(this) selectors to make it "make sense") and that didn't do anything. Tried some other things as well with no luck... • How do I use a contact's photo in a table view cell?

  I've got an app that has a table view that displays contact information in each row. I'd like to use the contact's stored image (if there is one available) as the image on the left-hand side of the cell. I've found some sketchy sample code in Apple's documentation, but the address book references some kind of weird data type (CFDataRef) that doesn't appear to correspond to the data types referenced in the table view programming guide (mainly UIImage). This seems like a pretty basic task, but I can't seem to wrap my head around it. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

• Creating a Dynamic calendar in Silverlight

  I am attempting to create a long range calendar that dynamically loads (and unloads) event data as the user scrolls left or right through time. I'm really struggling to figure out how to lay the basic framework of the UI out and how to dynamically build the interface as the user scrolls by clicking and dragging the mouse in the view area. See the image below for a basic diagram of the intent. Each slice would have potentially multiple rectangles in it for events that occurred on that day (slice). I would like each slice to be a canvas to allow me to position those rectangles appropriately. There are a few problems that I am not yet sure how to tackle but this is the first big one that I've been mulling over for a while and can't quite wrap my head around: I know how to dynamically create controls but how would I go about adding things to one end of the scrollable content while removing things from the other depending on the way the user is scrolling? Any guidance in the right direction would be much appreciated! Thanks.
