• Single Table Per Class Hierarchy with an abstract superclass using Hibernate Annotations

  I have a simple class hierarchy, similar to the following: @Entity @Table(name="animal") @Inheritance(strategy=InheritanceType.SINGLE_TABLE) @DiscriminatorColumn(name="animal_type", discriminatorType=DiscriminatorType.STRING) public abstract class Animal { } @Entity @DiscriminatorValue("cat") public class Cat extends Animal { } @Entity @DiscriminatorValue("dog") public class Dog extends Animal { } When I query "from Animal" I get this exception: "org.hibernate.InstantiationException: Cannot instantiate abstract class or interface: Animal" If I make Animal concrete, and add a dummy discriminator... such as @DiscriminatorValue("animal")... my query returns my cats and dogs as instances of Animals. I remember this being trivial with HBM based mappings but I think I'm missing something when using annotations. Can anyone help? Thanks!

• Android - ExpandableListView change background for child items

  I'm using ExpandableListView in my app and one of the complains I get from the users is that when the list item is expanded it's hard to visually distinguish where the child item ends and next group item begins. So I would like to change background of the child list item to the different shade. Brutal attempts that I've made so far were based on directly changing background color and text of the elements inside the child view item but that leads to loss of hovers and highlights. So my question is - what is a good strategy to achieve the above? I tried styles and selectors but what really bums me - if I change background for child item then I need to add selectors for all combinations of focus/enabled etc. when all I'm trying to do it to overwrite a single thing. Is there a way to inherit parent style and set background only for non- focused, enabled child item with other styles retained?

  We're trying to work out a deployment strategy for an internal tool that we're creating. It's a control that uses a set of 3rd party libraries to communication with a specific type of server. So I have a class library built that uses these libraries. I was looking to deploy a silverlight application that uses our library, which in turn uses a set of 3rd party libraries. When trying to reference the 3rd party libraries, I get the "library can not be referenced because it was not built as a silverlight library". The type of project I'm trying to build is a silverlight application - not a dll library or anything else. Is it possible to create a silverlight application using libraries created outside of silverlight?

• iPhone SDK: How do I create an overlay drop-down menu?

  Hi, I have a UIViewController containing its UIView which occupies the available screen (inbetween the tabbar and nav bar). I'd now like to add a simple toolbar which is situated at the top of the UIView which will contain some buttons. One of the buttons should display a drop down menu which is displayed as an overlay over the UIView. I'd quite like this menu to be a UITable as it could contain many items. The problem I'm having is I can't see the best way to go about this. I'm wondering whether there's a simple strategy. Here's an example of the type of feature I'm looking for... • How to turn off MVC.NET version 2's RequireHttps attribute?

  I see that version 2 of MVC.NET now has a RequireHttps attribute, which works great for me. However, what's a good strategy for turning the effect off? For example, I want to use Https on some pages, but regular Http on others. Should I create my own RequireHttp attribute? EDIT: I'm using my own RequireHttp attribute, and it works fine, but I'm wondering if there's some built-in functionality in MVC.NET Version 2 that I'm missing. EDIT 2: I must not have been clear. My question concerns the following: if you use RequireHttps, then any requests after that will be over Https even if the Controller or Action is not decorated with RequireHttps. Unless I'm mistaken, you need a 2nd attribute such as RequireHttp to redirect requests to Http instead of Https.

  Can I perform a Criteria query with Sub-Select AND Left-Outer join? For example, I have A 1-many B 1-many C. With Criteria.createAlias ("b", "b", Criteria.LEFT_JOIN) I can perform Left Outer join. With Criteria.setFetchMode ("b", org.hibernate.FetchMode.DEFAULT) I can perform Join with the default fetching strategy. I assume that having set @org.hibernate.annotations.FetchMode.SUBSELECT in both A.B and B.C is enough (is it?). Question 1: Why does org.hibernate.FetchMode not have SUBSELECT option, whereas the org.hibernate.annotations.FetchMode does? Question 2: Can I perform a Criteria query with Sub-Select AND Left-Outer join?

  Is there a way to store a conversion strategy (for converting some bytes) into a database and then execute it on the run time. If one were to store a complete java file, you would need to compile it, store the class and some how inject into the already running system. I am not sure how this would be possible. But using some kind of dynamic language on JVM would be nice. I see an example of execution of groovy from within spring context here http://www.devx.com/tips/Tip/42789 but this is still static in nature as application context contains the reference to the implementation and cannot be changed by database. Perhaps with JavaConfig of context it is possible. I am exploring options now, specifically with Spring 3.0. Your suggestions in any direction would be welcome.

  Hello, I have a class mapped as an Entity to persist it in a database. I have an id field as the primary key so every time the object is persisted the value of the id is retrieved from the sequence "myClass_pk_seq", a code like the following one. @Entity @Table(name="myObjects") public class MyClass { @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.SEQUENCE, generator="sequence") @SequenceGenerator(name="sequence", sequenceName="myClass_pk_seq", allocationSize=1) @Column(name="myClassId") private Integer id; ... } I need to get the next value of the sequence myClass_pk_seq to reserve that value (get the next value of the sequence and the current value is incremented), but without saving the object. How can I call the next value of a sequence when it's defined like this? Thanks.

• Is it possible to tweak TStringField to work like TWideStringField in Delphi?

  We want to use Unicode with Delphi 2009 and Interbase, and found that to switch the character encoding from WIN1252 to UNICODE_FSS we first have to replace all instances of TStringField with TWideStringField in all datamodules. For around 60 datamodules, we can not simply do this over one weekend. I can see only two options for a migration strategy: find a workaround which allows to use the existing TStringField fields without triggering the 'expected: TWideStringField' error or remove all persistent fields to avoid the string type conflict As far as I know the field types for persistent database fields are registered in some kind of class registry. Could we use this to make Delphi believe that a TStringField is ok for a Interbase character column with UNICODE_FSS encoding? Or can we use a commercial dbExpress driver which work with TStringField in both cases?   I'm attempting to implement a Patricia Trie with the methods addWord(), isWord(), and isPrefix() as a means to store a large dictionary of words for quick retrieval (including prefix search). I've read up on the concepts but they just aren't clarifying into an implementation. I want to know (in Java or Python code) how to implement the Trie, particularly the nodes (or should I implement it recursively). I saw one person who implemented it with an array of 26 child nodes set to null/None. Is there a better strategy (such as treating the letters as bits) and how would you implement it?

• Covering Earth with Hexagonal Map Tiles

  Many strategy games use hexagonal tiles. One of the main advantages is that the distance between the center of any tile and all its neighboring tiles is the same. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on marrying a hexagonal tile system with the traditional geographic system (longitude/latitude). I think it would be interesting to cover a globe with hexagonal tiles and be able to map a geographic coordinate to a tile. Has anyone seen anything remotely close to this before? UPDATE I'm looking for a way to subdivide the surface of a sphere so that each division has the same surface area. Ideally, the centers of adjacent sub-divisions would be equidistant.

  I have a table (say "Demographics") on SQL Server. In this table are the following columns "LastName", "FirstName", "MiddleName", "Prefix" , "Suffix". I have one textbox to search for them on a webpage. My question: Whats a good design strategy for queries where the user could be searching for various combinations of names including last names that have spaces e.g. "Smith James Jr." . Our customers store Jr. sometimes in suffix and sometimes just tack it to lastname. Sometimes Smith James Jr could be the entire last name.

• Technique for ensuring HTML- and URL-encoding

  Has anyone implemented a good template system for ensuring that output is properly HTML-encoded where it makes sense? Maybe even something that recognizes when output should be URL-encoded or JSON-encoded instead? The lazy approach — just encoding all inputs — causes problems when you want to send those inputs to a database, or to a block of JavaScript code. So something a little smarter is needed. The tedious approach — putting the proper encoding function around each piece of data on the template — works, but it's easy for developers to forget to do it. Is there a good approach that makes it easy for developers, and ensures that the right encoding is done? I was listening to one of the SO podcasts, and Joel tossed out an idea about using typed data to enforce a difference between HTML-encoded strings and non-encoded strings. Maybe that could be a starting point. I'm looking more for a strategy than for an implementation in a particular language (although I'd be happy to hear about implementations that already exist and work).

  Right so i am working with hibernate gilead and gwt to persist my data on users and files of a website. my users have a list of file locations. i am using annotations to map my classes to the database. i am getting a org.hibernate.LazyInitializationException when i try to add file locations to the list that is held in the user class. this is a method below that is overridden from a external file upload servlet class that i am using. when the file uploads it calls this method. the user1 is loaded from the database elsewhere. the exception occurs at user1.getFileLocations().add(fileLocation); • Need advice on speeding up tableViewCell photo loading performance

  I have around 20 tableview cells that each contain a number (2-5) thumbnail sized pictures (they are VERY small Facebook profile pictures, ex. http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-sf2p/hs254.snc3/23133_201668_2989_q.jpg). Each picture is an UIImageView added to the cell's contentview. Scrolling performance is poor, and measuring the draw time I've found the UIImage rendering is the bottleneck. I've researched/thought of some solutions but as I am new to iphone development I am not sure which strategy to pursue: preload all the images and retrieve them from disk instead of URL when drawing cells (I'm not sure if cell drawing will still be slow, so I want to hold off on the time investment here) Have the cells display a placeholder image from disk, while the picture is asynchronously loaded (this seems to be the best solution, but I'm currently not sure exactly how to do best do this) There's the fast drawing recommendation from Tweetie, but I don't know that will have much affect if it turns out my overhead is in network loading (http://blog.atebits.com/2008/12/fast-scrolling-in-tweetie-with-uitableview/) Thoughts/implementation advice?   My application is been live from 6 months. The application is host on jboss 7.1 server. From last few days I am finding numerous problem of hanging of jboss server. Though I restart the jboss server again, it does not invoke. I need to restart the server machine itself. Can anyone please let me know what could be the cause of these problems and the workable resolutions or any suggestion ? • Extracting pure content / text from HTML Pages by excluding navigation and chrome content

  Hi, I am crawling news websites and want to extract News Title, News Abstract (First Paragraph), etc I plugged into the webkit parser code to easily navigate webpage as a tree. To eliminate navigation and other non news content I take the text version of the article (minus the html tags, webkit provides api for the same). Then I run the diff algorithm comparing various article's text from same website this results in similar text being eliminated. This gives me content minus the common navigation content etc. Despite the above approach I am still getting quite some junk in my final text. This results in incorrect News Abstract being extracted. The error rate is 5 in 10 article i.e. 50%. Error as in Can you Suggest an alternative strategy for extraction of pure content, Would/Can learning Natural Language rocessing help in extracting correct abstract from these articles ? • Problem using Hibernate-Search

  Hi, I am using hibernate search for my application. It is well configured and running perfectly till some time back, when it stopped working suddenly. The reason according to me being the number of my model (bean) classes. I have some 90 classes, which I add to my configuration, while building my Hibernate Configuration. When, I disable hibernate search (remove the search annotations and use Configuration instead of AnnotationsConfiguration), I try to start my application, it Works fine. But,the same app when I enable search, it just hangs up. I tried debugging and found the exact place where it hangs. After adding all the class to my AnnotationsConfiguration object, when I say cfg.buildSessionfactory(), It never comes out of that statement. (I have waited for hours!!!) Also when I decrease the number of my model classes (like say to half i.e. 50) it comes out of that statement and the application works fine.. Can Someone tell why is this happening?? My versions of hibernate are: hibernate-core-3.3.1.GA.jar hibernate-annotations-3.4.0.GA.jar hibernate-commons-annotations-3.1.0.GA.jar hibernate-search-3.1.0.GA.jar Also if need to avoid using AnnotationsConfiguration, I read that I need to configure the search event listeners explicitly.. can anyone list all the neccessary listeners and their respective classes? • POX return data from WCF Data Services

  I am using WCF Data Services (netfx4) to provide data sourced from SQL via EF, the standard OData mechanism is fine and JSON works as well but I need a third option for generic POX (plain old xml). I have yet to come across a simple strategy or switch that allows me to control this but I am sure one must exist or a workaround method might be available. Any ideas? Ideally I would like to be able to use something like the JSONP option wherein I append 'format=JSON' to the URL, in this case 'format=pox' or 'POX=true' or something of that nature.

• How can I deploy my .NET app to Amazon EC2?

  I have a .NET Windows service and a .NET Web Application that I would like to deploy to my Amazon EC2 Windows 2008 instances. At this point, all I need to do is to copy the zipped files across to the EC2 box and remote desktop to the EC2 instance and finish the deployment. In order to do this, I have tried LogMeIn Hamachi2 to create a P2P VPN and use RoboCopy to copy the files, however it seems Hamachi doesn't work on Windows EC2. What is your solution for deploying your .NET apps to Windows EC2 instances? I want to avoid running an FTP server on the box just to get my files up on the server and don't have a VPN server (like OpenVPN) running to run a cloud based VPN solution. Perhaps I can find a simple way of using Amazon S3 as a strategy? Any ideas? Suggestions?

• Version Control for developers new to source control

  I've been writing code for a few years now and our backup strategy has been to zip the entire code directory up every few days and put it somewhere else on your hard drive, or occasionally upload it to some online file hosting service. Unfortunately the file hosting service got canceled without telling me and we lost years of backups. It's come down to the point where I finally have to learn to use version control. The only problems are My boss really doesn't like SVN, he tried it and it had a high learning curve (at least his client). We need a reliable place to host it (we can pay a reasonable amount). Can someone suggest what may be the best version control system and client for a newbie which won't be too annoying. Second what is a good remote version control service?
