• How to fix Ogre3d segfault with std::_Rb_tree_insert_and_rebalance ?

  Hello all. I'm working on a 3d music visualizer using Ogre3d, basically it's a spectrum analizer, a lot like the old xmms plugin: (http)://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6NKBiwYN24 It works well, the bars are drawn and updated, there are no framerate issues, but it crashes randomly. Sometimes it can run without problems, finish the song, other times it crashes instantly, other times the music just stops, without a crash. Here is the source code for the main class : https://github.com/balazsbela/OgreVisualizer/blob/master/src/VisualizerApplication.cpp#L221 Also the crashes seem to happen less often when I display the framerate overlay from Ogre samples. Would limiting the framerate help ? The crashes are seemingly random. Is it a performance issue ? Please help me out, I'm quite lost on this one, I also posted on Ogre3d forums but I received no responses. I received an email from one of the readers, asking if there would no problems when we create the Index on the base table. Well, we need to discuss this situation in two different cases. Before proceeding to the discussion, I strongly suggest you read my earlier articles. To avoid the duplication, I am not going to repeat the code and explanation over here. In all the earlier cases, I have explained in detail how Index created on the View is not utilized.   I always enjoy writing about concepts on Views. Views are frequently used concepts, and so it’s not surprising that I have seen so many misconceptions about this subject. To clear such misconceptions, I have previously written the article SQL SERVER – The Limitations of the Views – Eleven and more…. I also wrote a follow up article wherein I demonstrated that without even creating index on the basic table, the query on the View will not use the View. I promised in that post that I would also write an article where I would demonstrate the condition where the Index will be used. I got many responses suggesting that I can do that with using NOEXPAND; I agree. I have already written about this in my original summary article. • Unable to transfer data to or from mounted hard drive

  So usually i'm good at sorting out issues. But this one has me at a loss! This issues has occured since upgrading my ubuntu so this was workingg prior. I use mounted hard drives to manage my downloads which are then copied over accordingly by a python based app. I found it was having issues with permissions to create anything on these mounted hard drives. I'm able to play and access he content of these drives so they're not faulty. My mount script looks like the following rw,user,exec,auto I really am stuck. Could anyone shed any light on how to fix this and allow me to access it. • Ubuntu 11.10 - can't adjust brightness on my laptop

  Using every method possible I'm unable to change my laptop brightness.. It's stuck on super max brightness.. Using the slider in the "screens" window int he control panel doesnt do anything, and using the fn keys doesn't do anything... Some info about my system: laptop is a MSI VR420 Running ubuntu 11.10 video card is an integrated intel card Used to work when I ran ubuntu 10.10 and earlier versions (not sure if it worked out of the box or if I inadvertly fixed it in previous versions while installing lots of other packages) Brightness slider on the "screen" window doesn't do anything, "dim when on battery -power" doesnt do anything When I use the fn+f4/f5 keys to adjust brightness there is a popup showing that its receving the input, but i can only go from between 0 brightness and max brightness.. (that is what the output is showing, the brightness does not change though) when attempting to change the brightness with fn+f4/f5 my dmesg log reports "ACPI: Failed to switch the brightness" Here are some outputs from some terminal commands, not sure if any of this is useful or not.. lspci - http://pastebin.com/EimZSGs3 "ls /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness" will output "/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness" "cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness" = 0 (when I use the fn+f4/f5) this will change betwene 0 and, but the actual brightness doesn't change) "cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness" = 1 "lsmod | grep ^i915" = i915 505108 3 here is the list of things I've tried through searching google..... Edit /etc/default/grub?GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT: acpi_osi=Linux, acpi_backlight=vendor, nomodeset. (as well as several different combinations of these settings being on or off) Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf (file doesn't exist on my system) Edit /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness (file doesn't exist) sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=XX (does nothing) xbacklight -set XX (does nothing) I've tried about everything with no luck... The only thing i haven't tried is adding the ppa that someone suggested here: Unable to change brightness in a Lenovo laptop .... However according to the notes on the ppa.. all of the changes that are in the ppa are now actually apart of 11.10 and the ppa is only for people with 11.04.. Does anyone have any ideas for me? edit:by setting acpi=off in my /etc/default/grub file I was about to get my fn+f4/f5 keys to work, also "dim when display to save power" now makes my laptop dim when on battery power.. the dimness slider however still doesn't do anything.. also xbacklight doesn't do anything stil or any of the other methods... The thing i don't get is why setting acpi=off makes my fn+f4/f5 keys work? Isn't acpi supposed to be enables the backlight to be dimmed? does anyone know what ubuntu is deciding to do behind the scenes when acpi=off? Does anyone know what/if any features I might be losing with it off?

• Altering a Column Which has a Default Constraint

  Setting up a default column is a common task for  developers.  But, are we naming those default constraints explicitly? In the below  table creation, for the column, sys_DateTime the default value Getdate() will be allocated. CREATE TABLE SampleTable (ID int identity(1,1), Sys_DateTime Datetime DEFAULT getdate() ) We can check the relevant information from the system catalogs from following query. SELECT sc.name TableName, dc.name DefaultName, dc.definition, OBJECT_NAME(dc.parent_object_id) TableName, dc.is_system_named  FROM sys.default_constraints dc INNER JOIN sys.columns sc ON dc.parent_object_id = sc.object_id AND dc.parent_column_id = sc.column_id and results would be: Most of the above columns are self-explanatory. The last column, is_system_named, is to identify whether the default name was given by the system. As you know, in the above case, since we didn’t provide  any default name, the  system will generate a default name for you. But the problem with these names is that they can differ from environment to environment.  If example if I create this table in different table the default name could be DF__SampleTab__Sys_D__7E6CC920 Now let us create another default and explicitly name it: CREATE TABLE SampleTable2 (ID int identity(1,1), Sys_DateTime Datetime )   ALTER TABLE SampleTable2 ADD CONSTRAINT DF_sys_DateTime_Getdate DEFAULT( Getdate()) FOR Sys_DateTime If we run the previous query again we will be returned the below output. And you can see that last created default name has 0 for is_system_named. Now let us say I want to change the data type of the sys_DateTime column to something else: ALTER TABLE SampleTable2 ALTER COLUMN Sys_DateTime Date This will generate the below error: Msg 5074, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The object ‘DF_sys_DateTime_Getdate’ is dependent on column ‘Sys_DateTime’. Msg 4922, Level 16, State 9, Line 1 ALTER TABLE ALTER COLUMN Sys_DateTime failed because one or more objects access this column. • Ubuntu missing from the Grub menu

  Recently I've had some audio issues with Ubuntu (using precise), and in the process of trying to resolve that I ran a dist-upgrade. Everything went just fine, and the sound seemed good, until I rebooted my machine for the first time since the dist-upgrade. All I see now in the Grub menu at startup is memtest86+, another memtest variant, and Windows 7. It's not showing any of the linux kernels that Ubuntu is running on. • Ubuntu 12.04 Automounting ntfs partition

  Ive looked everywhere to fix this problem but I cant seem to figure out why its doing this. I have the following /etc/fstab entry to mount a ntfs partition using ntfs-3g. UUID=01CD842715EC2180 /media/mediahd02 ntfs defaults,user,noexec,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=007,fmask=117 0 2 The volume label for this partition is "MEDIA02" So I have had no problems with the fstab mounting. The problem however is that it automounts again using MEDIA02 label. I'm not sure automounting is the right term for this as its just an empty directory. Deleting this directory and rebooting is causing it to appear again. • tring to edit brightness

  i'm tring to edit the /sys/class/backlight/max_brightness file to stop ubuntu 12 returning to maximum brightness on each reboot. gedit won't save the file after i have modified it i have used chown to change ownership to me which was successful. I then changed gedits settings so it won't save a backup but it still won't save. It returns with this error, Could not save the file /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness. Unexpected error: Error writing to file: Input/output error is this yet another bug?

• Thinkpad brightness steps error using FN+Home/End

  I've met the following problem: normally my T400 (Lenovo Thinkpad) has 16 steps of brightness, and Windows utilizes it correctly. After a fresh install & minor tweaks Mint 12 (which is based on 11.10 Ubuntu) I only had 6 steps which was way to few. Listing /sys/class/backlight showed 3 entried. I removed the acpi-tools package, one of the disapperared - and I now have 10 steps! Therefore I think if I can reduce the entries to 1 I'm going to have 16 steps, since the stepping will be 1 instead of 2 (or 3). /sys/class/backlight/ intel_backlight -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/intel_backlight thinkpad_screen -> ../../devices/virtual/backlight/thinkpad_screen The problem is that I'm unable to trace back what are the configs / daemons / kernel options triggers these two. More strangely, I discovered a strange behaviour. I monitored watch -n1 "cat /sys/class/backlight/thinkpad_screen/actual_brightness" and watch -n1 "cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness" while changing the brightness with FN+home/end combinations from max to min. So... it seems that the intel entry is working correctly, showing correct values. The thinkpad entry however twists the things and even showing incorrect values. Does anyone have any idea how to get rid of the thinkpad entry? System data: Linux Mint 12 3.0.0-16 kernel Lenovo ThinkPad T400 Cinnamon 1.4 desktop For any additional info, please tell me what do you need. EDIT I'm sorry, I forgot to mention, I added acpi_backlight=vendor to GRUB cmdline as well, this is the result of the semi-better working than the default.

• Different files on shared partition?

  I am dual-booting Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.04. My partition scheme looks like this: /dev/sda1 - Windows 8 (nfts) /dev/sda2 - Ubuntu / (ext4) /dev/sda3 - Ubuntu home (ext4) /dev/sda5 - swap /dev/sda6 - Shared data partition (exfat) (First off, yes I do have exfat libraries installed on Ubuntu) I created some PNG images in Windows and saved them on my shared partition. From Ubuntu, I edited the images in GIMP and saved them (replacing the ones on the shared partition). When I boot into Windows, the files appear unchanged - exactly like they did before I edited them from Ubuntu. I even added a folder and deleted some other files, but none of these changes exist in Windows. When I boot into Ubuntu, all of the changes are still there. It is as if Windows is caching the old file structure... How is this possible? Thanks in advance. • "Can't Connect to Server" from 2nd virtual host on VPS

  I'm using Debian 7 Wheezy and Apache 2.2.22, and I'm setting up Virtual Hosts for a number of websites on my VPS. I've successfully configured the VirtualHost directives for one of the sites, but the second one continually gives "Problem Loading Page" in Firefox. I've run configtest and it has verified all my syntax is correct, and I've checked all the permissions. I've been reading that I'll need to basically just mimic the directives for listening on port 80, only on port 443, and make sure mod_ssl is enabled? EDIT: I just ran apache2 -t to test the config files that way, and got the error: apache2: bad user name ${APACHE_RUN_USER}. However, apachectl configtest returns Syntax OK. There are no other mentions of errors with the mutex anywhere else, however. I was pretty sure if there was an error with the user apache was supposed to run under, the server wouldn't start at all... EDIT 2: Restarting apache fixed the bad user name error.

• Suppressing NSLog statements for release?

  I wonder if someone could help me setup a number of NSLog statements so they print to console when executing in "Debug Mode" but don't print in "Release Mode". I understand I need to add something like DEBUG = 1 to the debug config in Xcode but I can't find where. Also how do I utilise this in my code? • Monodevelop: `Waiting for debugger to connect...`

  I am trying to debug this Mono desktop software in Monodevelop. I imported the SLN file, ran Build all with success, but when I press the Debug button I get this popup that stays waiting forever saying Waiting for debugger to connect...: The output says: User assembly '/home/nico/src/SparkleShare/SparkleShare/bin/SparkleShare.exe' is missing. Debugger will now debug all code, not just user code. Am I doing something wrong? Monodevelop 2.8.6.3 on Ubuntu 2012.04. Nothing special appears on the console with monodevelop -v -v -v. When I press Run instead of Debug, the app crashes immediately saying The application exited with code: 255, but I need Debug to find where the problem is. Note: It is not the same problem as this question, which is about MonoTouch waiting for a phone simulator... the suggestions over there are about the simulator or updating XCode... no simulator nor XCode here.
