The problem is that I don't want to repeat this code everywhere. Like as we know, enums can't be extended; so wherever I use this, I have to put all these methods there. I want only to declare the values and that if they should be persisted. No method definitions each time; any ideas?

• Start Debugging in Visual Studio

  Every developer is familiar with hitting F5 and debugging their application, which starts their app with the Visual Studio debugger attached from the start (instead of attaching later). This is one way to achieve step 1 of the Live Debugging process. Hitting F5, F11, Ctrl+F10 and the other ways to start the process under the debugger is covered in this MSDN "How To". The way you configure the debugging experience, before you hit F5, is by selecting the "Project" and then the "Properties" menu (Alt+F7 on my keyboard bindings). Dependent on your project type there are different options, but if you browse to the Debug (or Debugging) node in the properties page you'll have a way to select local or remote machine debugging, what debug engines to use, command line arguments to use during debugging etc. Currently the .NET and C++ project systems are different, but one would hope that one day they would be unified to use the same mechanism and UI (I don't work on that product team so I have no knowledge of whether that is a goal or if it will ever happen). Personally I like the C++ one better, here is what it looks like (and it is described on this MSDN page): If you were following along in the "Attach to Process" blog post, the equivalent to the "Select Code Type" dialog is the "Debugger Type" dropdown: that is how you change the debug engine. Some of the debugger properties options appear on the standard toolbar in VS. With Visual Studio 11, the Debug Type option has been added to the toolbar If you don't see that in your installation, customize the toolbar to show it - VS 11 tends to be conservative in what you see by default, especially for the non-C++ Visual Studio profiles. • Persistence problem when installing USB Ubuntu variant using Windows

  I'm part of a project called One2One2Go - we're developing a Live USB Ubuntu variant for use in schools in Somerville, MA. We have the project files compiled into an iso, and when installed using the native Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator, the USB works fine. When installed using a tool on a Windows machine (LiLi at linuxliveusb.com or liveusb-creator at fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator), the USB works, but does not have persistence. This happens even if the creator is specifically set to allocate an area for persistent files. When comparing files on sticks created in Windows or Ubuntu, the one file that is different is syslinux/syslinux.cfg. I think the problem is that on the stick created by Windows, there is no "persistent" flag, but I don't know why. Is this a problem with our disk image or with the creator? • The dreaded Brightness issue (Fn keys + Max brightness)

  I'm trying to get some control over the brightness of my Samsung QX411 (Integrated Intel and discrete Nvidia, though Ubuntu doesn't see the latter yet, I'll play around with Bumblebee later) Using the FN+up/down lowers the screen brightness from max to one peg down or back up. If I try to bring the brightness down any more, it just flickers and stays the same. I can lower the brightness in Settings, but that's delicate and gets reverted to max if I open up the brightness settings again, or log out. The closest I got was adding acpi_backlight=vendor to a line in /etc/default/grub, (source) I could consequently lower the brightness a couple of pegs down to the minimum with FN+down, but then it's as if the problem got inversed, and I'd get stuck in the bottom tier, I could only increase the brightness by one peg and back down. Rebooting would revert to max brightness. acpi_osi=, acpi_osi=Linux, acpi_osi=vendor, acpi_osi='!Windows 2012', acpi_backlight=Linux, acpi_backlight='!Windows 2012' don't do anything for me. I've also tried adding echo 2000 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness to /etc/rc.local, where my max value from cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness is 4648, which didn't do anything. (same result with echo 2000 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness) source Samsung tools also didn't help in this regard. I've spent hours on this, it's getting quite frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Juju Openstack bundle: Can't launch an instance

After changing vip_iface strings to point to right devices, e.g., br0 instead of eth0, and defining "/mnt/loopback|30G", in Cinder's block-device string, am able to navigate through openstack dashboard, error free. Following http://docs.openstack.org/grizzly/openstack-compute/install/apt/content/running-an-instance.html instructions, attempted to launch cirros 0.3.1 image; however, novalist shows the instance in   If you've been using SQL Server for a long time, you may have been used to using the OBJECT_NAME system function in the past - especially useful when converting table IDs into table names when querying sysobjects and sysindexes..... However, if you're an old-school DBA  - did you know since SQL 2005 service pack 2 it  accepts a  second parameter ? database_id.. For example, this can be used to summarize some useful information from sys.dm_exec_query_stats.   Every developer is familiar with hitting F5 and debugging their application, which starts their app with the Visual Studio debugger attached from the start (instead of attaching later). This is one way to achieve step 1 of the Live Debugging process. Hitting F5, F11, Ctrl+F10 and the other ways to start the process under the debugger is covered in this MSDN "How To". The way you configure the debugging experience, before you hit F5, is by selecting the "Project" and then the "Properties" menu (Alt+F7 on my keyboard bindings). Dependent on your project type there are different options, but if you browse to the Debug (or Debugging) node in the properties page you'll have a way to select local or remote machine debugging, what debug engines to use, command line arguments to use during debugging etc. Currently the .NET and C++ project systems are different, but one would hope that one day they would be unified to use the same mechanism and UI (I don't work on that product team so I have no knowledge of whether that is a goal or if it will ever happen). Personally I like the C++ one better, here is what it looks like (and it is described on this MSDN page): If you were following along in the "Attach to Process" blog post, the equivalent to the "Select Code Type" dialog is the "Debugger Type" dropdown: that is how you change the debug engine. Some of the debugger properties options appear on the standard toolbar in VS. With Visual Studio 11, the Debug Type option has been added to the toolbar If you don't see that in your installation, customize the toolbar to show it - VS 11 tends to be conservative in what you see by default, especially for the non-C++ Visual Studio profiles. • Why does my browser take me to Scour.com? (redirect virus)

  The "scour" or Rootkit.Win32.TDSS virus has a long history which can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scour Here is the primary symptom: after searching for something in your web browser using google, one of the results that you click on redirects you to scour.com. If you've executed ClamWin, Malwarebytes, McAfee, Norton, etc. to find and isolate the virus without any luck--this isn't really a surprise, since this virus attaches to existing system drivers. I only know of one reliable package that will remove this without ill effects--like adding new spyware. This package is called TDSSKiller. I have seen multiple websites that claim to have this software available, but the one that I know is reliable is located here: http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684 Once you go to Kaspersky's tech support site, the TDSSKiller zip file is available for downloading. When you execute this software, you will be able to "cure" or repair the infected driver. Remember to jot down the name of the driver for future reference--should you need to reinstall the driver from a "same-as" working computer, or your install disk if the repair is ineffective. The driver that happened to get infected on my computer was the tcpip.sys driver. This caused my win sockets to loose their ip addresses. In most other instances, less critical drivers such as HDAudBus.sys are infected. In my case, I was not through correcting my computer problems until I corrected the broken WinSock issue and loaded an earlier version of the tcpip.sys driver from: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 which I placed in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers Don't forget to reboot your computer after your repair! Once you download TDSSKiller and cure/repair your infected driver(s), the redirect on google searches should disappear .

• Debugging Node.js applications for Windows Azure

  In case you are developing a new web application with Node.js for Windows Azure, you might notice there is no easy way to debug the application unless you are developing in an integrated IDE like Cloud9. For those that develop applications locally using a text editor (or WebMatrix) and Windows Azure Powershell for Node.js, it requires some steps not documented anywhere for the moment. I spent a few hours on this the other day I practically got nowhere until I received some help from Tomek and the rest of them. The IISNode version that currently ships with the Windows Azure for Node.js SDK does not support debugging by default, so you need to install the IISNode full version available in the github repository.  Once you have installed the full version, you need to enable debugging for the web application by modifying the web.config file <iisnode debuggingEnabled="true" loggingEnabled="true" devErrorsEnabled="true" /> The xml above needs to be inserted within the existing “<system.webServer/>” section. The last step is to open a WebKit browser (e.g. Chrome) and navigate to the URL where your application is hosted but adding the segment “/debug” to  the end. The full URL to the node.js application must be used, for example, http://localhost:81/myserver.js/debug That should open a new instance of Node inspector on the browser, so you can debug the application from there.   Sometime a simple solution have even simpler solutions but we often do not practice it as we do not see value in it or find it useful. Well, today’s blog post is also about something which I have seen not practiced much in codes. We are so much comfortable with alternative usage that we do not feel like switching how we query the data. I was going over forums and I noticed that at one place user has used following code to get Schema Name from ObjectID. It is just fine and one of the way to get SchemaName from Object ID. However, I have been using function OBJECT_SCHEMA_NAME to get the schema name. If I have to write the same code from the beginning I would have written the same code as following. SELECT OBJECT_SCHEMA_NAME(46623209) AS SchemaName, t.name AS TableName, t.schema_id, t.OBJECT_ID FROM sys.tables t WHERE t.name = OBJECT_NAME(46623209) GO Now, both of the above code give you exact same result. If you remove the WHERE condition it will give you information of all the tables of the database. Now the question is which one is better – honestly – it is not about one is better than other. Embedded developers are not used to this, since the C programming language is more popular but less easy to develop in. We just need to use a dynamic Java String array to map to the pinouts of the GPIO port names from the previous diagram posted. • Too many heap subpools might break the upgrade

  Recently one of our new upcoming Oracle Database 11.2 reference customers did upgrade their production database - a huge EBS system - from Oracle 9.2.0.8 to Oracle Database 11.2.0.2. They've tested very well, we've optimized the upgrade process, the recompilation timings etc.  But once the live upgrade was done it did fail in the JAVA component piece with this error: begin if initjvmaux.startstep('CREATE_JAVA_SYSTEM') then * ORA-29553: classw in use: SYS.javax/mail/folder ORA-06512: at "SYS.INITJVMAUX", line 23 ORA-06512: at line 5 Support diagnosis was pretty quick - and refered to:Bug 10165223 - ORA-29553: class in use: sys.javax/mail/folder during database upgrade But how could this happen? Actually I don't know as we have used the same init.ora setup on test and production. The only difference: the prod system has more CPUs and RAM. Anyway, the bug names as workarounds to either decrease the SGA to less than 1GB or decrease the number of heap subpools to 1. Finally this query did help to diagnose the number of heap subpools: select count(distinct kghluidx) num_subpools from x$kghlu where kghlushrpool = 1; The result was 2 - so we did run the upgrade now with this parameter set: _kghdsidx_count=1 And finally it did work well. One sad thing:After the upgrade did fail Support did recommend to restore the whole database - which took an additional 3-4 hours. As the ORACLE SERVER component has been already upgraded successfully at the stage where the error did happen it would have been fine to go on with the manual upgrade and start catupgrd.sql script. It would have been detected that the ORACLE SERVER is upgraded already and just picked up the non-upgraded components. The good news:Finally I had one extra slide to add to our workshop presentation

• trying to upgrade memory

  I've been using Ubuntu on my laptop for awhile now. Not quite used to it yet. I've got a Acer Aspire with an orig 4 gig mem/500 gig HDD. Running 12.04 presently 32 bit sys. I have the 13.04 upgrade disc and want to upgrade my memory to 8 Gig. Everytime I install the 8 gig memory, the system won't boot to either version. I downloaded the 64 bit version of both versions of Ubuntu but no results yet. Can anyone offer a suggestion here? I'm kinda lost. Additional Information: The memory was purchased through Acer/Kingston. Recommended for this computer. I watched the video on installing it, so I doubt it's installed wrong. (There's only one way of putting it in). I swapped Op Sys, from Ubuntu 12.04 to 13.04 to 13.10 and now to Xubuntu 13.10 64 bit version. I'm still not having any luck with this upgrade. Would it be necessary to upgrade the CPU? It's just a thought, I don't know what else could keep me from utilizing the new memory. Additional Information: Called Kingston this afternoon, they are sending replacement lower density memory modules 2/4 gig - 8 gig. Tech service says I need to upgrade BIOS to utilize new memory install VIA Dos since it is no longer a windows system. I'm not sure how to go about that but it's a learning process I can live with. Thank you all for your help/support. I realize this isn't a Ubuntu problem but each new user of this op sys, seems to share simular problems and maybe someone can use this info to their advantage.

In our platform "OMAP35XX_TPS659XX_TI_V1" if you do this we cause the catalog parser to die... For example if we have a library "Musbfn_OMAP35XX_TPS659XX_TI_V1.dll" entering this in the catalogs pbcxml file in a <module> section causes the XML parser to fail with : Error 3 The 'urn:Microsoft.PlatformBuilder/Catalog:Module' element is        invalid - The value '012345678901234567890123456789.dll' is invalid         according to its datatype         'urn:Microsoft.PlatformBuilder/Catalog:CatalogFileName' - The actual         length is greater than the MaxLength value. A: There are a couple workarounds I can think of. I believe the Module element is only used when doing SYSGEN parsing to make sure dependent SYSGENs are present when the item is selected, so I believe it is optional to the catalog. The other obvious workaround is to shorten the soc name. I realize neither of these solutions is ideal. This is not something we anticipated when we tested CE6.0, sorry. Travis Hobrla [MS] (Expert)[2010-3-30 12:55]: Q: I've got a platform (not developed by myself) where I2C bus support has to be provided through the OAL as the kernel needs to talk to devices such as the power management IC and gas gauge so a 'proper' I2C driver hanging off device manager isn't possible. This happens to be a polled driver, so obviously it hits the system hard when either under lots of traffic or an error condition occurs and the driver constantly polls. I originally thought that there was no straightforward way to make such code interrupt driven in the kernel (as it's a cludge) but I realised that that's exactly what ETHDBG drivers do. Is there any reason why I shouldn't have a go at implementing a similar mechanism for our kernel resident I2C driver? If not, are there any obvious pitfalls - I've not seen any other BSP's do this in the past... A: You can make a 'proper' driver that calls down into the OAL to do the actual I2C transactions. Alternatively you can build an interrupt-based version in the OAL where you handle everything in the ISR. There is nothing wrong with that so long as the rest of your drivers and app threads can handle longer times with interrupts off while you are servicing I2C interrupts. I think I started debugging last time by using wireshark to see what was happening on the network then setting up the OAL_ETHER and OAL_FUNC and OAL_VERBOSE as well as OAL_KITL flags to see what was actually happening in the driver....
