  • Windows 7 randomly installs an "Unknown Device"

    Rarely (several days to weeks between occurrences,) and seemingly at random, I get a balloon notification from Windows 7 (x64 SP1 Home Premium) that it is installing hardware for me. However, no new hardware has been installed or plugged in! When I click the balloon it doesn't give me any useful information: Looking in the event log, I find this entry: Event ID: 20001 Source: UserPnp Task Category: 7005 Message: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\usb.inf_amd64_neutral_153b489118ee37b8\usb.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\6&3AF9A177&0&0060&&02 with the following status: 0x0. It appears to be USB related. My motherboard has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 controllers. My keyboard and mouse are plugged into the 2.0 slots and the data/recharge cable for a tablet (but not the tablet itself) was plugged in to the 3.0 slot. No other USB devices have been attached for several days/reboots. Why is Windows doing this?

  • Installing FreeNAS 8.3 problems

    I'm trying to install FreeNAS 8.3 on some desktop-level hardware (AMD Phenom + 890FX + 16GB) and I've been unsuccessful. I initially tried using a USB stick and followed the instructions on the FreeNAS site here. Making the USB was simple as the instructions laid out, but as soon as the USB is detected (during the boot process) some text appears and quickly vanishes and my machine reboots infinitely. After trying several different was to make the USB, I tried using a DVD-ROM but again, I had the same issue as the USB stick. This leads me to conclude that either a BIOS setting is incorrect but I have no idea which one. I've changed the BIOS to not "fast" boot per se, and I've correctly configured the boot order per USB stick and the DVD-ROM drive so I know that it's working. Have I missed anything that might be causing this problem? I'm not a FreeBSD/FreeNAS expert by any means.

  • Installing Chrome OS on HP Pavilion

    Trying to install Chrome OS on HP Pavillion tx1000. I changed the BIOS to boot from USB before hard drive, and created a bootable USB drive (SanDisk Cruzer 4GB). No matter how many ways I try to make the USB drive, the laptop hangs on the startup screen, and trying to open the Boot Order Options freezes on "Fixed disk 0: ...". On the other hand, without the USB plugged in, the computer continues, and displays "Initialized Mouse", and then onto the Boot Order Options. If you let it boot normally from the beginning, it starts up fine into Windows Vista. I am using Hexxeh's Chrome OS build. Here are the different methods I've tried for making the Bootable USB Drive: Hexxeh's Image Creator (for Mac) Making the USB device bootable (using these directions). I wrote the image using Win32DiskImager. Writing the image using Win32DiskImager (without making it bootable).

  • Try out ubuntu on thinkpad x40 (via usb)?

    I am trying to try out ubuntu (i,e, install it within windows) on my thinkpad x40. I followed the instructions on how to create a bootable usb (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download). No problem. The issue I have now is that th eusb ports on my x40 were burned before (common problem with the machine), i.e. do not work. So I got a USB notebook card from belkin. However it does not seem to recognize the usb stick from bios, thus I cannot boot from it. I also do not have a cd rom. Then tried to run wubi from the usb stick, briefly appears in task manager, no further action. So I tried it with wubi.exe, but same thing. Downloaded it to desktop, run it, briefly appears in the task manager under processes, no further action. Any one idea? I have enough memory and enough freed hd space. Thanks. Oliver

    I'm new to Linux. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. Now i want to install Ubuntu 12.04 . I got an ISO image of Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop. I put this image in to a pen drive which is formated,set the boot option boot from usb but nothing happened . I searched this over the net and on Ubuntu website but nobody has given the complete steps . someone say u can install from the Ubuntu also ,someone says u can do a fresh installation from usb pen drive u need to make you pen drive bootable etc. etc. . My problem is that i don't know the exact steps how ton install Ubuntu from usb pen drive? All I want to do is to completely remove my Ubuntu 11.04 and install Ubuntu 12.04 from usb pen-drive. Can any body tell me how to make a pen drive bootable ? How to install Ubuntu 12.04 from pen-drive? Please give me a step by step procedure. please explain me how to do it step by step . Windows Phone 7 SilverLight supports persistent storage, which is a great way of saving settings betweens runs of your application. However I couldn’t get it to work. If you do this to create a persistant storage instance -    private IsolatedStorageSettings userSettings = IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings; To retrieve settings do the following - string xx = userSettings[“SomeValue”].ToString();   Hiowever the bit that got me was how to save settings, you have todo this - userSettings.Add("Hello", DateTime.Now.ToShortTimeString());           userSettings.Save(); // <- This is the bit that got me   Hope this helps others
