• How to get disable nVidia Graphics Card (which has recently expired) so that I can boot Desktop ?

  I have a 3-4 years old laptop (Compaq V3000), which had Win Vista with Ubuntu 10.10 in dual boot configuration. The graphics card inside is an old Nvidia GeForce Go 7200. One fine day, my graphics card died (of old age, presumably) - resulting in myself being initially unable to boot to WinVista and Ubuntu 10.10. I solved the problem with WinVista (disabled Nvidia card after booting to Safe mode), but I don't know how to do the same with Ubuntu. I can only disable the 3rd-party driver after I boot to desktop, but since its crashing before that, I'm unable to do so. Can anyone help me disable the graphics card in Ubunutu ?

  I am using VB.net to write a parallel based code. I use Parallel.For to generate pairs of 500 objects or in combination C(500,2) such as the following code; but I found that it didn't always generate all combinations which should be 124750 (shown from variable Counter). No other thread was runing when this code was run. I am using a Win-7 32 Bit desktop with Intel Core i5 CPU [email protected], 3.33 GHz and RAM 2GB. What's wrong with the code and how to solve this problem? Thank You. • How can I rescue a Lubuntu install?

  Quick recap: I was having a problem with hibernation so I check and the linuxswap partition is missing, showing an "unknown" chunk of drive where it was. Happened before, booted to the liveCD and used Gparted to reformat that partition back to swap. Then I boot........F---- grub rescue... MBR took care of the problem, except that now I'm back to Windows only. EVERY guide out there makes me reinstall Lubuntu from scratch, a waste of time considering it will take me at least a day to reinstall everything there. Can't I just fix grub like I did with the win MBR?

  When I start sqlplus, more often than not, I want it to start in new window,whether it be on Linux/Solaris GNOME or Windows.I seldom use GNOME so I never bothered to figure out how.On Windows, one can use Windows menu or Win+R "Run" dialog but I prefer usingbash. Because, this way, I can keep the history in ~/.bash_history file.There are 2 ways. Using cmd.exe or cygstart.For example, to start default sqlplus.exe to connect to default local instance. $ cmd /c "start sqlplus sys/oracle as sysdba" 2nd example. • Gnome 3 Shell extensions not working on Ubuntu 12.4 [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Gnome Shell Extension Empty I just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.4 running on a Win 7 box via VBox and switched the user interface to Gnome 3 but have a problem. In Advanced Settings (gnome tweak), the Shell Extensions window has no listings and the Theme window shows a "caution" triangle next to the Shell theme drop box. I have re-installed the default extensions using the Noobs Lab posted instructions: sudo apt-get install shell-extensions3.4 sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions The commands appear to complete without error. Symptoms are: Gnome 2 visual appearance and no window borders or controls. To close a window, I have to click the window indicator in the sys tray and select the close menu item. Any ideas?

• How to get differents backgrounds for each desktop working properly?

  I've followed all the instructions for getting differents wallpapers for each desktop. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I've installed compiz-fusion-plugins-extra to add Wallpaper plugin on my Compiz Settings Manager (ccsm). But unfortunaly I cannot get my wallpapers working properly. I follow these instructions http://ubuntuguide.net/different-wallpapers-on-each-workspace-in-ubuntu and I just get a black background. Everything works fine after I press Win+P (I don't know what is this shortcut, refresh output I guess) or switch between ttf1 and ttf8 (ctrl+alt+f1 and ctrl+alt+f8). I tried reboot but the problem persist. What can I do to resolve this issue ?

  I want to set up a server to allow remote access over a WAN. The purpose is to allow people to remote connect and download specific files from a specified folder hosted on the server. Is there software available to achieve this, preferably with an interface so I can easily add and remove users, plus monitor who is connected at any time? I have looked around and only found terminal references, and not very clear how to set up. I have a service running on my Win server, but I am hoping to move from that to Ubuntu for my file sharing. I do not want people who access the server to have any local accounts or any access to any folder/files apart from authorised folders/files. Thanks

• Windows 7/ 12.04 Dual Boot Mess

  I am certainly new to ubuntu (linux in general)... I added ubuntu 12.04 as a dual boot to a brand new desktop which had win 7 pre-installed. Both work well Then I tried to change the order of the boot menu to make Ubuntu first and Win7 second... I did this from the windows side (it seems that my setup is relying on windows bootloader, which I don't think I need to change) using the built-in startup manager (I think that's what windows calls it- it's in the control panel). I set Ubuntu as first (default if no user input). then... I ACCIDENTALLY ("hmmm...I wonder what this button does?") set the menu timeout to "0" Now, I cannot change the menu timeout (because I cannot get into windows) and without doing so, I cannot select windows as the OS I would like to boot(I cannot get into windows). Any Ideas?

I got the suggestion to use info.window after initializing SDL and filling the info variable with data by calling SDL_GetWindowWMInfo(); included in the header file SDL_syswm.h. My compiler (visual studio 2008 professional edition) gives the following error: 226) : error C2039: 'window' : is not a member of 'SDL_SysWMinfo' 1 include\sdl_syswm.h(173) : see declaration of 'SDL_SysWMinfo' Any help appreciated. • How many achievements should I include, and of what challenge?

  I know this question is fairy broad and subjective, but I'm wondering if there's been any published research into what an optimal number of achievements is and what kind of challenge they should present. The game this question directly relates to is a shoot-em-up, but an ideal answer is fairly theoretical. If there are there are too few achievements, or they are not challenging, I would expect they would fail in their goal to keep people playing. If there are too many, or they are unreasonably difficult, I would expect people to quickly give up. I personally witnessed the latter happening in Starcraft 2; a section of the achievements would have you win hundreds of games against their AI opponents (boring!)

• removing ubuntu from a laptop (corrupted ubuntu)

  I wanted to update my (very old) Ubuntu installation on my dual boot laptop. The other OS is win7. However, when I tried to boot into it I got: \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr cannot be loaded. Status 0xE0000000C. I assume the mbr is the master boot record for the Ubuntu installation. I looked at my C: drive and there's a WUBILDR and WUBILDR.MBR file there. Is it as simple as deleting them? ALSO, I just noticed there is no UBUNTU partition. If I delete these files and then get rid of the startup option for Ubuntu, is that all I have to do? (My goal is to have an up-to-date Ubuntu OS alongside Win 7).

• Booting Ubuntu shows only cursor, no desktop features

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu and have been trying since 2010 on my Win XP (2006-2008 I don't know which year's version exactly). I'm trying to get rid of XP and every time I install Ubuntu it doesn't work. I've tried all the options on the install list from Wubi and from inside the installer. I've tried a lot of different stuff and all it will load is a mouse cursor and a black screen. Please do help out with suggestions/advice. Thanks in advance.

  Xamarin 3 was released last week with a great new addition: Xamarin.Forms . This triggered our attention because we've been using such a system for a couple of years now. We've developed it by ourselves and used it for a bunch of projects. We've been looking for a way to make this project open source but we didn't manage to convince the management. They believe we should not make it open source because we won't win anything with it and all that will happen is that the competition will be able to build apps quicker with our library. • Can't access my partitions after installing Ubuntu

  I installed Ubuntu 13.4 replace with win 8 after installation complete I can't access my partitions and receive a message like this : Error mounting /dev/sda5 at /media/manaf/01CD6C0800CEE670: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sda5" "/media/manaf/01CD6C0800CEE670"' exited with non-zero exit status 14: The disk contains an unclean file system (0, 0). Metadata kept in Windows cache, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sda5': Operation not permitted The NTFS partition is in an unsafe state.   I am using to study (and at some point of time copy the desired module of) the code from these two sites (Google Code and Github). There is sourceforge too, I have some code, say some library that I want to share with the community, and I am to decide the hosting site. And before I decide I want to have opinions from this community. Which is your favorite Project hosting site or service? And why? There is one point where github can win over google code (may be I am wrong here), Github can let you forge whole project with a zip or tar file, but to do the same in google code we have to upload the zip file explicitly and put it in downloads....
