• 2D Tile Map files for Platformer, JSON or DB?

  I'm developing a 2D platformer with some uni friends. We've based it upon the XNA Platformer Starter Kit which uses .txt files to store the tile map. While this is simple it does not give us enough control and flexibility with level design. Some examples: for multiple layers of content multiple files are required, each object is fixed onto the grid, doesn't allow for rotation of objects, limited number of characters etc. So I'm doing some research into how to store the level data and map file. Reasoning for DB: From my perspective I see less redundancy of data using a database to store the tile data. Tiles in the same x,y position with the same characteristics can be reused from level to level. It seems like it would simple enough to write a method to retrieve all the tiles that are used in a particular level from the database. Reasoning for JSON: Visually editable files, changes can be tracked via SVN a lot easier. But there is repeated content. Do either have any drawbacks (load times, access times, memory etc) compared to the other? And what is commonly used in the industry? • Exchange 2007: Auto reply message to senders (server side)

  I’ve a need to create an auto-reply for some of the users in my organization where, when a person sends an E-mail to e.g. [email protected] is faced with an automatically auto-reply with some message “closed during the holidays. We are back at… etc. etc. etc.”. I’ve tried to create a Transport Rule on our Exchange server but the only option I can find in the actions-window is to reply with a “Bounce message to sender with enhanced status code” but I guess that is not the precise action I’m looking for. How can I set up a server-side auto-reply, apply it to only a fixed number of users in my organization and create a message to the senders (which is outside the organization)?

• Keyboard doesn't load in windows xp after Alureon infection

  AVAST detected alureon in a number of system files including atapi.sys and kbdclass.sys iple I quarantined those files, and restarted my machine. After restarting, my keyboard and cdrom did not work (I assumed those drivers would be automatically replaced, but was apparently wrong.) I went into device manager, and checked for hardware changes, it fixed the cdrom (which works now) and looked as though it fixed the keyboard as well. It did not. After multiple reboots the keyboard is still not recognized. It works up until the XP login screen loads, after which it is completely unresponsive. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks :)

• Password Management for Oracle WebLogic customers

  One of the most common requests for enhancements I get across my desk is that customers wish to allow end users to change their passwords from our products. Now, typically password management is not in the realm of individual applications but it is an infrastructure requirement, so we don't usually add this to our roadmaps by default. The issue is that with the vast range of security stores that can be used with our product line across the Web Application Servers we support, it is almost impossible to come up with a generic enough API to work across them. If you have a specific security store on a specific Web Application Server platform then there are simpler solutions. There are a number of ways of implementing this without providing functionality specific functionality: Oracle sells Identity Management software that offers common API's to manage passwords. You can purchase those products and link to the password change dialog in those products using Navigation Keys. If you are a customer using Oracle WebLogic, then there is a sample JSP's that can be linked to provide this functionality under Oracle TechNet (registration required) under Code Samples (project S20). These can be added as a Navigation Key to complete the functionality. This will allow end users to manage their own passwords. Obviously these are all samples and should be treated as customizations when you implement them. If you wish to understand Navigation Keys, then look at the Oracle Utilities Application Framework Integration Guidelines (Doc Id: 789060.1) available from My Oracle Support.

• Steam freezes at login screen

  I have just installed Steam on Xubuntu, and after it finished installing it went to the login screen, but the screen is frozen, and I cannot press the buttons. • Do parent website application pools serve child application pools as well?

  I am running a .NET web application in its own application pool on IIS7. The parent website is set to run in its own application pool. Today we noticed a huge number of connections going to IIS. I tried to browse a plain ol' .html page in the directory of the web application and it hangs. I then try to browse another plain .html file in the root of the parent website, and it too hangs. In performance monitor, i see there are some 8k connections to the default website and climbing. I cant seem to understand if my application was the problem, or IIS itself. If it was my application, wouldnt the html page in the root of the parent website still be able to be served? edit: Also, if i shut down the app pool to my application, the html page on the root of the parent website is still not able to be displayed.

• Deny Access to directories from unauthorized users

  I am not being paid for this and I would like to know the quickest way to do the following. A former client has a page which only members can access. This page links to a number of galleries which he only wants members to access. The galleries are not protected by any kind of authentication. What I assume is the quickest way to do this is to create a .htaccess file which only allow people to view the site when the come from a certain referrer. Would this work? My current thinking is that I could use a php script to deploy a .htaccess file into each of the gallery directories. (There are around a 100 at the moment.) I found this link which might be what I am after but to be honest I really don't get it. Is my thinking sound?

JSR 338, Java Persistence 2.1, has posted an Early Draft 2 Review.  This review closes 30 November.  JSR 346, Contexts and Dependency Injection for Java, EE 1.1, has posted a Public Review.  This review closes 3 December.  JSR 352, Batch Applications for the Java Platform, has posted a Public Review.  This review closes 3 December. Inactive JSRs: In 2008, we initiated an effort to identify JSRs that had not continued to make progress in the JCP program.  We have reported on this topic since that time at JCP Executive Committee Meetings. The term 'Inactive JSRs' was introduced, and a process was developed with the guidance of the EC to reduce the number of Inactive JSRs  (reduced from over 60 to 2 JSRs) through either moving to the next JSR stage or being Withdrawn or declared Dormant.  This process has been formalized in JCP 2.8 and above, with the introduction of JSR deadlines.  The JSRs which were put to a Dormancy Ballot in September 2012  have been approved by the EC and are now declared Dormant.  You can view the results of the JSR Voting on JCP.org.  The latest Inactive JSRs report is available as part of the September 2012 JCP EC Face-to-Face Meeting Materials.

  I have spreadsheets in OpenOffice.org Calc that consist of the first sheet and an arbitrary number of additional sheets, each collecting data for a specific month. The Month sheets have an identical structure. The first sheet is supposed to provide an overview to the most important numbers in the month sheets. Whenever I add a Month sheet, I want it to appear automatically in the Overview sheet with the structure given below. So, for each Month sheet, copy or reference some of the cells into the Overview sheet: {Referenced Sheet Name} | Fixed Header1 | Fixed Header2 | Fixed Header3 Fixed Label 1 | {CellRef 1} | {CellRef 2} | {CellRef 3} Fixed Label 2 | {CellRef 4} | {CellRef 5} | {CellRef 6} I know how do to this for just one sheet by hand, but I have no clue how to make Calc do this automatically for me. Is it possible at all? Any help appreciated.

• Linux - Help, I'm running out of inodes!

  I have a filesystem that has lots of small files. Currently about 80% of inodes are used (I checked with df -i), however only 60% of disk space is used. How can I 'increase' the number of inodes? If it was just disk space, I know that I could just increase the size of the disk (this disk is on LVM). If I increase the size of the disk, will that make me have more inodes? I'm willing to grow the filesystem this disk is on, if that'd help.

  I have on my server 2 things: the node.js server and a mongodb database; The node.js server is reachable from myip/server; and now I would like to export the mongodb database to myip/database for example. Now when I use my mongodb viewer (MongoVUE) with "http://myip/database:9000" (the port 9000 is set in nginx and it's also the port that I start mongod). If I go to "http://myip/database:9000" or "http://myip/database" in a browser it look like: "You are trying to access MongoDB on the native driver port.   I seem to run into problems with the max. number of processes every so often. Anyone know what is best practice for fixing this? Running OSX 10.6 on a MacBook Pro i7. ulimit -a returns these values: core file size (blocks, -c) 0 data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited file size (blocks, -f) unlimited max locked memory (kbytes, -l) unlimited max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited open files (-n) 256 pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 1 stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192 cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited max user processes (-u) 266 virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited When the error occurred I checked, and there were 102 running tasks and 523 threads.

• IKE2 VPN Server Certificate expired. How do I issue a new one

  This is a completely new area for me. We are getting "13801: IKE Auth Credentials are unacceptable" messages when connecting to our VPN service on a small Windows 2008R2 domain. Doing a google search has lead me to investigate the Certificate Authority. I've looked in the Certificate Authority | Issued Certificates And the one for the VPN Reconnect is marked as expired since a couple of hours a ago. Can some one tell me what the step I need to take to regen/reissue a simillar cert please? FYI:The client certs are not expiring for a number of years so they are fine.

• Huge google impression drop after cleaning html

  Good morning, I am the webmaster of a non-profit organization that donates grants to colorectal cancer research projects and funds various colorectal cancer information campaigns. We have three domains: www.fundacioolgatorres dot org (Catalan) www.fundacionolgatorres dot org (Spanish) www.olgatorresfoundation dot org (English) So what happened? I redesigned olgatorresfoundation on the 20th and the fundacionolgatorres on the 30th of May. In both cases, exactly two days later, the number of impressions on both dropped to a halt. Granted, we did not have the traffic of Microsoft, but a 90% decrease a disaster of incredible proportions for us. My only real changes were cleaning up the old ineffective HTML to a cleaner form (mostly moving away from redundant table construction to a table-less view). Here is a before and after snapshot of what the change looks like: Before: http://www.fundacioolgatorres.org/aparell_digestiu/introduccio/ (unchanged page in Catalan) After: http://www.olgatorresfoundation.org/digestive_system/introduction/ (changed page in English) Anybody has a clue to what just happened? Why should a normal, sane html improvement be punished and so dramatically? No URLs have been changed, neither have page names or descriptions. Possible secondary question: If it is so that Google sees it as a major overhaul and decides to drop the pagerank sharply, does it come back to pre-change levels if the content "checks out" or will the page start over from scratch earning those pagerank points (which would mean that we would have to wait 6 months for the pages to recover to the level they had two weeks ago)? • Archiving old, outdated hard drives

  I have a number of old hard drives. I've decided to throw them out. But before I do that, I'd like to keep the contents of hard drives, intact. I tried to use the ISO file format to archive but the major problem is that it loses file attributes and can't create directories with exceeding depth of 8 levels. I do have drives over a variety of file systems; FAT, NTFS, ext2, ext3 and HFS and I'd like to archive them without any loss of information.

• Under kvm, Vista guest OS install halts on black screen

  I am using kvm on my ubuntu-server-10.04 amd64 dual core PC. I am trying to install a Windows Vista guest OS. The installation proceeds properly until the system reboot halfway into the installation process, at which point it stops on a black screen and CPU usage goes to near zero. I created the vm with virt-install as follows: virt-install -n vista --connect qemu:///system -r 1024 -vcpus 2 \ --os-type windows --os-variant vista \ --virt-type kvm --accelerate \ -c /dev/sr0 \ --disk path=/dev/main/vista-hd \ --network bridge=br0 \ --vnc --noautoconsole Where /dev/sr0 is the physical drive with the vista installation DVD, and /dev/main/vista-hd is a 20-GB lvm logical volume I created. A number of people seem to have had success installing vista under KVM, but I haven't been able to determine what is causing my problem. Ideas anyone?

• Can't Use Switchable Graphics

  I can't get my switchable graphics cards working on my Acer 4820TG laptop. It came installed with Windows 7, but I've installed the RTM build of Windows 8. I have to keep the "Graphics" setting on the BIOS set to "Discrete," if it's set to "Switchable" the screen turns black after the boot animation is complete. The machine has an Intel graphics card and an AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5650, and I know that the Intel card is working. I've seen it work a couple of times with Windows 8 installed, but for some reason it just doesn't anymore. I know that it's not broken, because when I plug in a secondary monitor, and move the cursor to the right, I can see it on that monitor. Are there drivers or something I need to install? I've tried a number of drivers and utilities from Acer's website, none of which have fixed the problem.

• Database server: Small quick RAM or large slow RAM?

  We are currently designing our new database servers, and have come up with a trade off I'm not entirely sure of how to answer. These are our options: 48GB 1333MHz, or 96GB 1066MHz. My thinking is that RAM should be plentiful for a Database Server (we have plenty and plenty of data, and some very large queries) rather than as quick as it could be. Apparently we can't get 16GB chips at 1333MHz, hence the choices above. So, should we get lots of slower RAM, or less faster RAM? Extra Info: Number of DIMM Slots Available: 6 Servers: Dell Blades CPU: 6 core (only single socket due to Oracle licensing).

• Postgres error messages in Apache error log

  I'm running Apache 2.2, PHP 5.2, and Postgres 8.2 on Windows, and I'm seeing something funky in Apache's error.log file. Occasionally, I'll see the message "row number -1 is out of range 0..-1" pop up over and over. Unlike all the other lines in that log file, there's no timestamp or log level. Just that exact string. Googling around, it appears that message is, character for character, a common Postgres error message, but is not an Apache error. I've seen it happen multiple times, and on several different servers. I can't seem to reproduce it, though. I've tried throwing all sorts of error ridden database queries and result set inquiries at Postgres via PHP, and none of them seem to trigger that line being written to the log file. Is it possible for Postgres errors to be ending up in my Apache log file, and if so, how? What would trigger an error message like that? Thanks!
