• What resources are there for creating a dedicated NES emulator box?

  Where do I start, and what communities should I get involved in, in order to achieve the following? Ideally, I'd like to have a box that does the following (doesn't have to do this out of the box, I'm just looking to be able to achieve these goals through configs and necessary dependencies): Either bypasses login, or auto login Auto-start FCEUX with options that will (a) automatically start a ROM of my choosing, and (b) go into full-screen mode. You can assume that before I get that far, I've already configured the input devices and video options. I'd like to create (or install, if it exists) a full-screen app that takes a list of ROMs, allows me to select one with a gamepad/arcade stick, and press a button to open that game Be able to map a button on a gamepad/arcade stick to the "Power off" or exit function of the emulator, such that it will take me back to the ROM selection screen. I've already successfully installed FCEUX and tested it with an arcade stick I own, so I'm not looking for an emulator installer guide. I don't know if the ROM selector app exists already, but I'm a Java developer, and could probably create one (so long as it's not too difficult to support controllers - I was thinking of using Slick2D for this - a gaming library that I'm already pretty familiar with). The goal would be a dedicated box that I have connected to my TV. I power it on. It boots up and starts the ROM selection app, which passes the proper parameters to FCEUX (or another emulator that I might switch to at a later time), and I'm ready to go. Basically an NES emulator as a real, living room console. Also, as far as mapping a controller button to functions in the app, well, I've also played around with hardware, and it would be pretty trivial for me to modify a gamepad to trigger key presses. I just don't want to go to that length if it's not necessary.

• Suddely internet is not accessible

  I am going crazy here. One day everything was working fine. I turned pc off and went to sleep. Next day turn pc on and cannot access internet (from any browser). The situation is: I cannot open any webpage from browser (tried Firefox and Epiphany) and cannot receive emails in thunderbird. BUT if I run firefox from console as sudo, I can use it as usual. I can access Skype and pretty much any other network stuff (like installing software with apt-get etc.), also if I use Astrill VPN software I can access webpages even running without sudo. I haven't install any software or anything like that for several days = I have not a clue what could cause this. Just by the way, other Win PC in our home has no issue. Here is what I have tried to fix this: I have tried to restart my pc, router, modem - multiple times I have tried to change permissions to my firefox profile I have tried to completely re-install firefox and start with blank profile, thus no addons I have tried to change /etc/resolv.conf to an IP of my router (it was 127.0.1.1) I have tried to change my hostname (from tomino-NB to tominoNB) I think I might try even more stuff. None of it works. Can someone please try to help me. Thank you UPDATE 1: I have tried this: Removing resolv.conf - Didn't help Also "ping" and "dig" commands cannot resolve host UPDATE 2: I have tried to edit nameservers in resolv.conf but still no effect. I can ping router as well as I can ping outside IP. So definitely just some DNS issue. Is it possible that something is rewriting path to resolv.conf and using different file? UPDATE 3: I have just restarted PC and everything works now... resolv.conf went back to nameserver 127.0.1.1 . I have no clue what happened that it works again...

• Logging library for (c++) games

  I know a lot of logging libraries but didn't test a lot of them. (GoogleLog, Pantheios, the coming boost::log library...) In games, especially in remote multiplayer and multithreaded games, logging is vital to debugging, even if you remove all logs in the end. Let's say I'm making a PC game (not console) that needs logs (multiplayer and multithreaded and/or multiprocess) and I have good reasons for looking for a library for logging (like, I don't have time or I'm not confident in my ability to write one correctly for my case). Assuming that I need : performance ease of use (allow streaming or formating or something like that) reliable (don't leak or crash!) cross-platform (at least Windows, MacOSX, Linux/Ubuntu) Wich logging library would you recommand? Currently, I think that boost::log is the most flexible one (you can even log to remotely!), but have not good performance. Pantheios is often cited but I don't have comparison points on performance and usage. I've used my own lib for a long time but I know it don't manage multithreading so it's a big problem, even if it's fast enough. Google Log seems interesting, I just need to test it but if you already have compared those libs and more, your advice might be of good use. Games are often performance demanding while complex to debug so it would be good to know logging libraries that, in our specific case, have clear advantages.

• GlassFish Extension for Oracle JDeveloper

  We just release a new version of Oracle JDeveloper - 11.1.2.3. One new feature here is built-in support for GlassFish. This include the ability to create an "application server" connection to GlassFish and then deploy to that server with one click from inside JDeveloper. You can use this for deploying Oracle ADF Essentials application on Glassfish, but you can also use it to deploy any Java EE application you build in JDeveloper on GlassFish. However, if you are planning to work with GlassFish and JDeveloper on a more regular basis as your development server, then you might find my new extension useful. The new extension allows you to start and stop an external GlassFish instance, as well as start it in debug mode (which will allow JDeveloper to remotely debug your application as it runs on the server. I also added a button that will invoke the web admin console of Glassfish. • Ubuntu-installer fails preseed configuration file

  I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 over network unattended. I installed a DHCP server (Dnsmasq), a TFTP server (tftpd-hpa), I got the netboot.tar.gz archive with the pxelinux.0 file, the pxelinux.cfg directory, the linux kernel and the initrd.gz image and I put a preseed file into my web server. Dnsmasq, tftpd-hpa, pxelinux and Apache are all on the same machine. The PCs MB doesn’t support PXE, so I use iPXE and boot it from a CD. The PC gets an IP from the DHCP, then iPXE loads #pxelinux.cfg/default, which I edited like this: timeout 5 prompt 0 default install label install kernel ubuntu-installer/i386/linux append vga=normal locale=en_GB setup/layoutcode=sl_SI console-setup/layoutcode=sl_SI netcfg/choose_interface=auto initrd=ubuntu-installer/i386/initrd.gz netcfg/get_hostname=ubuntux preseed/url=#http://192.168.10.10/ins/preseed.cfg Then it loads the linux kernel and the initrd.gz image. Then I got a question: Detect keyboard layout? I desided to bother with this later. So I answer No, and then twice on Englishjust to get trough and then I get to the error: The installer failed to process the preconfiguration file from #http://192.168.10.10/ins/preseeed.cfg. The file may be corrupt. I created the file myself and copied the d-I commands into it. I also tried to get the preseed.cfg over a web browser and it works fine. So why is the installer failing?

  Hi, I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on a stationary PC. I have a secondary 1 TB harddrive with a single big logical partition (currently formatted as ext4). It is mounted as /usr3 with options user, exec in /etc/fstab. I am doing highspeed imaging experiments. Well, only 260fps, but that still creates many individual files since each frames is saved as one png-file. The stationary is not used by anyone other than me which is why the default security model posed by ubuntu is not necessary. What is the best way to make the entire contents of /usr3 generally available on all systems. In case I need to move the harddrive to another Ubuntu 9.x or 10.x machine? When grabbing image with the firewire camera I use a selfmade grabbing software-utility (console based) in sudo-mode. This creates all files with root as owner and group. I am logged in as user otb and usually I do the following when having to make files generally available to otb: sudo chown otb -R * sudo chgrp otb -R * sudo chmod a=rwx -R * This takes some time since the disk now contains individual ~200000 files. After this, how would linux behave if I moved the harddrive to another system where the user otb is also available? Would the files still be accessible without sudo use?

• Am I misunderstanding chown and chmod?

  I want to either extend the size of my guest partition or figure out how to copy stuff from the guest partition to my normal /home directory. (Because of some other problems I can only run Xorg as guest, but I can log into virtual console as myself or root.) Here's the motivation: I want to torrent a large file. It's larger than my guest filesystem. But I have plenty of space on my real drive, I just can't log into it graphically. So I tried to set up a "pipe" to get the file out of the tmpfs. I did: su -u myself #catch mkdir ~/receiver_dir sudo su cd /tmp/guest-lkj567UIO/ #throw ln -s mario_pipe /home/myself/receiver_dir chown -R guest-lkj567UIO /home/myself/receiver_dir chown -R guest-lkj567UIO /tmp/guest-lkj567UIO/mario_pipe chmod -R a+rw /home/myself/receiver_dir chmod -R a+rw /tmp/guest-lkj567UIO/mario_pipe su -u guest-lkj567UIO cd /tmp/guest-lkj567UIO cd mario_pipe touch something #success! However, when I try to torrent to /tmp/guest-lkj567UIO/mario_pipe, Transmission says I don't have write permissions. But it looks like I just wrote there? And that everybody (a+rw) can write there in fact? Maybe this indicates I don't actually understand chown and chmod but nothing from their man pages pops out.

• Cannot see boot options after editing grub background

  After solving this problem I managed to get myself into truble again out of nothing by trying to change the display of the dual boot option page in Boot Customizer. I have changed the background, the fonts size (I have increased them) and font style (I have chosen UnDotum). But Boot Customizer gave me an error (I mean a message that the application was closed unexpectedly or smth). I have restarted BootCustomizer and the settings were there. When I rebooted, instead of the normal boot options list, just the background image that I had selected and nothing else. I used Boot Repair to repair grub, it says it did it successfully, but I still get the background image when I try to boot. Any ideas? (Could it be the matter that I chose UnDotum font style? That was installed in Lubuntu - but how could it be accessible in displaying boot options?) • How to share code as open source?

  I have a little program that I wrote for a local group to handle a somewhat complicated scheduling issue for scheduling multiple meetings in multiple locations that change weekly according to certain criteria. It's a niche need, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are other groups that could use software like this. In fact, we've had requests from others for directions on starting a group like this, and if their groups get as big, they might also want special software to help with scheduling. I plan to continue developing the program and eventually make it an online web app, but a very simple alpha version is completed as a console app. I'd like to make it available as open source, but I have no idea what kind of process I should go through first. Right now, all I have is Java code, not even unit-tested thoroughly. I haven't shown the code to anyone else. There is no documentation. I don't know where I would put the code so others could access it. I don't know anything about licensing it. I don't know what kind of support people will expect from me if I release it as open source. I have no idea what else I should worry about. Can someone outline for me (or post an article(s) that outlines) the process of taking open source software from "coded" to "completed / available"? I really don't want to embarrass myself by doing things weirdly.

• Save password in WCF adapter binding file

  Binding file for WCF Adapter doesn't save the password no matter it is generated by "Add Generated Items..." wizard in Visual Studio or "Export Bindings..." in administration console. It is by design dut to the consideration of security, but it is very annoying especially when you import bindings which contain multiple WCF send ports. The way to aviod retyping password everytime after an import is to edit the binding file before import. Here is what needs to be done. 1. Find the following string:     &lt;Password vt="1" /&gt; "&lt;" means "<", "&gt;" means ">", "vt" means "Variable Type", variable type 1 is "NULL", so the above string can be translated to "<Password/>" 2. Replace it with:     &lt;Password vt="8"&gt;MyPassword&lt;/Password&gt;    variable type 8 is "string", the above string can be transalted to "<Password>MyPassword</Password>"   Binding file uses a lot of character entity references for XML character encoding purpose. • Can't get sprite to rotate correctly?

  I'm attempting to play with graphics using Java/Slick 2d. I'm trying to get my sprite to rotate to wherever the mouse is on the screen and then move accordingly. I figured the best way to do this was to keep track of the angle the sprite is at since I have to multiply the cosine/sine of the angle by the move speed in order to get the sprite to go "forwards" even if it is, say, facing 45 degrees in quadrant 3. However, before I even worry about that, I'm having trouble even getting my sprite to rotate in the first place. Preliminary console tests showed that this code worked, but when applied to the sprite, it just kind twitches.   I'm a .NET developer and I've used TFS (team foundation server) as my source control software many times. Good features of TFS are: Good integration with Visual Studio (so I do almost everything visually; no console commands) Easy check-out, check-in process Easy merging and conflict resolution Easy automated builds Branching Now, I want to use Git as the backbone, repository, and source control of my open source projects. My projects are in C#, JavaScript, or PHP language with MySQL, or SQL Server databases as the storage mechanism. I just used github.com's help for this purpose and I created a profile there, and downloaded a GUI for Git. Up to this part was so easy. But I'm almost stuck at going along any further. I just want to do some simple (really simple) operations, including: Creating a project on Git and mapping it to a folder on my laptop Checking out/checking in files and folders Resolving conflicts That's all I need to do now. But it seems that the GUI is not that user friendly. I expect the GUI to have a Connect To... or something like that, and then I expect a list of projects to be shown, and when I choose one, I expect to see the list of files and folders of that project, just like exploring your TFS project in Visual Studio. Then I want to be able to right click a file and select check-in... or check-out and stuff like that. Do I expect much? What should I do to easily use Git just like TFS? What am I missing here?

Whenever I press the enter key all that pops up is (intetramfs) If anyone can make rhyme or reason out of this please, please help me out so it can boot up normally and i can be set.   Following on from question 12397, I'd still like to get suspend working on my Phenom II X6 / GA-890GPA desktop machine running current Maverick. • Fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 won't boot on Asus X101CH Eee PC

  I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 in my Asus X101CH Eee PC, using a live usb which I made using startup disk creator, replacing Ubuntu 12.04. The installation ran smoothly, but when I boot, it goes to a purple screen for a second, then a lot of text like the following shows up in sequence: Starting crash report submission daemon [OK] Starting CPU interrupts balancing daemon [OK] Stopping save kernel messages [OK] _ And the cursor just keeps blinking for hours. I can't log in. Pressing Alt + F2 did not bring me to console mode. I thought it might be a partition problem so I formatted the whole disk, by creating a new partition table using gparted in Ubuntu 12.04 live USB. I noticed that I can't try Ubuntu using 12.10 live USB either; it just went to a blank screen when I hit the 'try ubuntu' button. But the same problem arose. I even changed the pen drive for the live USB a couple of times. I happened to know that the Intel Atom N2600 Cedar Trail CPU in my computer is not well supported in Linux, I managed to install its drivers in Ubuntu 12.04, although the computer went blank during the installation.

• Hosting Bazaar shared repositories

  What i want ? We operate in a small team of 9 people including developers, QA and designers. I want to setup a version control. We have a ubuntu (server edition) and i want to host all our repositories there. I have no understanding that even if it is possible. What I have done? We have setup bazaar on all distributions. We are using Bazaar explorer as our gui front-end. The command edition from console isn't very comfortable to all members. We have gone through the manual, but it hasn't been very helpful. Our inexperience being the cause. Team The designers are using windows distribution and developers & QA are using ubuntu distributions. I have googled around and i am really struggling to find a good tutorial for this setup. So any links/guides/leads towards accomplishing the same would be very helpful. • Clustering and custom applications

  I was not entirely sure what tags to put but hope this is ok. This is just a general question in regards to clustering and applications: so lets say we have a clustered environment setup. We cluster SQL Server (I dont know exactly how its done but lets just say its been done for the sake of argument). Now if a website or application is trying to access that database for read/write (say an ASP.NET app or a C# Winforms app) and during that time SQL goes down - it takes a couple of minutes for the clustering failover to take affect to switch to another node. What happens during this time? I think it will time out/unable to connect. BUT is there a way for it to place the request in some pipeline so when the cluster node is back up/switched over it will continue as normal? as you can see, I know nothing much about clustering! what about your own custom .NET apps? Would there be a special way to develop them? I know that you can say create a simple Hello world app, and cluster that but they wouldnt be something you could see interms of the UI or anything, so they would effectively need to be developed as a Windows Service perhaps or even as a standard Console app which runs and not wait for user input but you wouldnt see any output from it (unless you redirect output to somewhere else) What im getting at here is... for those who have experience or developed a cluster application in .NET, how did you do it and what are the things to be aware of? For example we have the cloud service - fundamentally its built on clustering - if there is an outage, another node takes place and service is resumed as normal but we dont really see much of that downtime.

When I typed the lvresize command, it never returned. I let this run overnight in the background, but this morning I still couldnt successfully do a "pvdisplay" or "lvdisplay" because I think it was waiting on a lock or something, so the command never returned. When i went to log onto the server's console, I saw a bunch of messages like: rcu_sched_state detected stall on cpu 2 Now when I boot, I get a kernel panic error, and a message about not being able to mount /mapper/vg-root cannot open root device "mapper/vg-root" or unknown_block(0,0) Kernel Panic -not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root file system on unknown_block(0,0) What should I do to get my system back up and running? Did I attempt to do the logical volume resize correctly? Thanks
