  I accidentally installed Ubuntu to one of my data drives from Windows. The drive was a NTFS drive and contained about 80 GB of important data. The size of the drive is 110 GB. Its new file system is ext4. In an attempt to recover the data, I downloaded foremost and tried the following commands: foremost -i / -o /media/281C8DB01C8D7998/Recovery/ -T -v foremost -i /dev/sda7 -o /media/281C8DB01C8D7998/Recovery/ -T -v (sda7 is the drive in question.) It appears that with either command, foremost gets stuck reading some file. • Confused about javascript module pattern implementation

  I have a class written on a project I'm working on that I've been told is using the module pattern, but it's doing things a little differently than the examples I've seen. It basically takes this form: (function ($, document, window, undefined) { var module = { foo : bar, aMethod : function (arg) { className.bMethod(arg); }, bMethod : function (arg) { console.log('spoons'); } }; window.ajaxTable = ajaxTable; })(jQuery, document, window); I get what's going on here. But I'm not sure how this relates to most of the definitions I've seen of the module (or revealing?) module pattern. like this one from briancray var module = (function () { // private variables and functions var foo = 'bar'; // constructor var module = function () { }; // prototype module.prototype = { constructor: module, something: function () { } }; // return module return module; })(); var my_module = new module(); Is the first example basically like the second except everything is in the constructor? • Groovy/Grails course content

  Hi, Some Java developers have asked if I could give them a 2-day primer on Grails development. I'm assuming they're familiar with: Java language and libraries Java web development, e.g. Servlets, JSPs Spring Hibernate Client-side development, CSS, HTML, JavaScript I'm further assuming they have no experience with Groovy or Grails. AFAIK, the app that they'll be building is a new project, so there's no need to cover topics like using GORM with a legacy database. I'm trying to decide how I should structure the course, e.g. what topics to cover and how much time to spend on each. I reckon about 1/2 - 3/4 days on Groovy and the rest of the time on Grails would be adequate. I'll probably use the Groovy console to demonstrate the Groovy language concepts and a simple Grails app for explaining the conventions and structure of a Grails project. If anyone has a list of Groovy/Grails topics that I should cover, or even an outline of a similar course that they've given/taken, I'd be very grateful. Naturally, I will credit for any resources that I use during the course.

  Anonymous delegates are great, they elimiante the need for lots of small classes that just pass values around, however care needs to be taken when using them, as they are not automatically unhooked when the function you created them in returns. In fact after it returns there is no way to unhook them. I fire up my app, and run into a ‘binding’ issue, that AzureReader2 was trying to use Microsoft.WindowsAzure.Storage, Version=2.1.0.0 but alas, it couldn’t find it. I am not the only one (see stackoverflow), and one solution is to run ‘Add-BindingRedirect’ from the Package Manager Console, but that didn’t solve the problem for me, as it didn’t pick up on the Azure stuff, so I resorted to adding the redirect manually. • Using Computer Management (MMC) with the Solaris CIFS Service (August 25, 2009)

  One of our goals for the Solaris CIFS Service is to provide seamless Windows interoperability: not just to deliver ubiquitous, multi-protocol file sharing, which is obviously a major part of this project, but to support Windows services at a fundamental level.  It's an ongoing mission and our latest update includes support for Windows remote management. Remote management is extremely important to Windows administrators and one of the mainstay tools is Computer Management. Computer Management is a Windows administration application, actually a collection of Microsoft Management Console (MMC) tools, that can be used to configure, monitor and manage local and remote services and resources.  The MMC is an extensible framework of registered components, known as snap-ins, which allows Computer Management to provide comprehensive management features for both the local system and remote systems on the network. Supported Computer Management features include: Share ManagementSupport for share management is relatively complete.  You can create, delete, list and configure shares.  It's not yet possible to change the maximum allowed or number of users properties but other properties, including the Share Permissions, can be managed via the MMC. Users, Groups and ConnectionsYou can view local SMB users and groups, monitor user connections and see the list of open files. If necessary, you can also disconnect users and/or close files. ServicesYou can view the SMF services running on an OpenSolaris system.  This is a read-only view - we don't support service management (the ability to start or stop) SMF services from Computer Management (yet). To ensure that only the appropriate users have access to administrative operations there are some access restrictions on these remote management features. • Acceptable placement of the composition root using dependency injection and inversion of control containers

  I've read in several sources including Mark Seemann's 'Ploeh' blog about how the appropriate placement of the composition root of an IoC container is as close as possible to the entry point of an application. In the .NET world, these applications seem to be commonly thought of as Web projects, WPF projects, console applications, things with a typical UI (read: not library projects). Is it really going against this sage advice to place the composition root at the entry point of a library project, when it represents the logical entry point of a group of library projects, and the client of a project group such as this is someone else's work, whose author can't or won't add the composition root to their project (a UI project or yet another library project, even)? I'm familiar with Ninject as an IoC container implementation, but I imagine many others work the same way in that they can scan for a module containing all the necessary binding configurations. This means I could put a binding module in its own library project to compile with my main library project's output, and if the client wanted to change the configuration (an unlikely scenario in my case), they could drop in a replacement dll to replace the library with the binding module. This seems to avoid the most common clients having to deal with dependency injection and composition roots at all, and would make for the cleanest API for the library project group. Yet this seems to fly in the face of conventional wisdom on the issue. Is it just that most of the advice out there makes the assumption that the developer has some coordination with the development of the UI project(s) as well, rather than my case, in which I'm just developing libraries for others to use?

• Restoring GRUB2 on Software RAID 0 using LiveCD after Windows 7 wiped it

  I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my system. However, I need to install Windows 7 back, and I expect that it would alter GRUB and it did. Right now, my partition on my Software RAID 0 looks like this: nvidia_acajefec1 is Ubuntu 10.10 and nvidia_acajefec3 is Windows 7. I've been following some guides around and I am always stuck at GRUB not able to detect the usual RAID content. I've tried running: sudo grub > root (hd0,0) GRUB complains it couldn't find my hard disk. So I tried: find (hd0,0) And it complains that it couldn't find anything. So I tried: find /boot/grub/stage1 It said "file not found". Here's the text from the console: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ grub Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time. [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. However, ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dmraid -r /dev/sdb: nvidia, "nvidia_acajefec", stripe, ok, 488397166 sectors, data@ 0 /dev/sda: nvidia, "nvidia_acajefec", stripe, ok, 488397166 sectors, data@ 0 So what now? Do you have an idea for how to make fdisk see my RAID array on live cd (Ubuntu 10.10)? Honestly, I am lost, very lost in trying to restore GRUB2 on this software RAID 0 system right now.

• Site failing randomly - could it be Cloudflare or something weird in the JS?

  I've been working on a simple site that uses javascript to fade through some fullscreen background images as well as some other simple animations. I've tested the site on Chrome, Safari, FF and Opera on OSX, IE8+ on Win7 and Chrome & FF on Ubuntu and everything looks as I'd expect it to. However, I've had reports of the site failing to load (stops at the stage where the background fades up) on Safari and Chrome on OSX and Win. I can't replicate this on any setup so I'm finding it impossible to troubleshoot. Google's instant preview shows the site fine as does most of the options at browsershots.org so I'm really scratching my head. I'm running the site's traffic through Cloudflare and I'm wondering whether anyone can see (or knows from other sites) why Cloudflare might be mangling the JS or causing a problem somehow (I don't get any errors in the JS error console). Of course, if you can replicate the problem on your machine and can suggest an area to look at that would be amazing but I'm hoping that, like me, you don't see any problem with the site! • Invalid Html Response and JS Errors when you open your Application in Visual Studio 2013

   I was working on an application which uses Telerik controls. The application was working fine for a while. Suddenly, the application stopped working. I mean lot of my application pages becoming very very ugly. I found JavaScript errors on every Browser's console. When I check the page view-source, the generated HTML was messy and invalid. This was only happening with my local machine. If someone else on my network accesses my application pages, he will get the correct HTML and no JavaScript errors. My mind was blowing because the same page was generating invalid HTML(and JavaScript errors) when I access the page using a local browser but generate correct HTML(and no JavaScript errors) when someone else access my application page remotely. Then I realized that I the only change I made last was opening my application in Visual Studio 2013 RTM which I installed few days ago. I closed the Visual Studio 2013, everything work like a charm. Then I became100% sure that this is only happening due to new Visual Studio 2013 feature called Browser Link. I just open the application again and add this in web.config.   Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse 12.1.1.2.2 introduces new support for GlassFish 4.0, the reference implementation of Java EE7.  Getting started with GlassFish 4.0 in Eclipse couldn't be easier. Follow these short steps to get GlassFish 4.0 setup so you can start developing, deploying, and debugging your Java EE7 applications. Prerequisites GlassFish 4.0 Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse 12.1.1.2.2+ from OTN or Eclipse Marketplace Setting up the server connection In the Servers view, click to add a New > Server . Select GlassFish 4.0 from the list of supported server configurations. Pick your GlassFish installation directory (usually <glassfish 4>/glassfish) and select your domain. After you click Finish you should now be setup to launch Glassfish 4.0 in normal and debug mode within Eclipse as well as associate projects for deployment through the Add and Remove wizard. Using GlassFish tools in Eclipse GlassFish server tools provide some useful information about your running GlassFish 4.0 environment. Resources displays current resources deployed in the domain including your JDBC Connection Pool and JDBC Resource names. I find this extra bit of information useful when working with JPA. Deployed Applications shows the current active deployments in GlassFish which can be undeployed as needed from within Eclipse. Deployed Web Services provides information about SOAP-based web services deployed in this domain. Also with the running server are quick launch links to open the Administrative Console, Server Logs, and the GlassFish Community Site all within Eclipse's embedded browser.

• Ubuntu 12.04LTS stuck at login mouse and keyboard not responding

  I have Ubuntu 12.04LTS installed on a dual-booted machine (i5 dual core 8G ram) and it's been working fine, but today for some reason when I logged out and tried to log back in it is stuck at the login page, i.e. the mouse and the keyboard are not responding. The mouse is stuck at the top left corner of my screen, and I can do nothing but to turn the machine off. (I have been using logitech wireless mouse and keyboard.) I can not access the virtual console (Alt-F1 or Cntrl-Alt-F1) either! Here is what I have tried so far: Verified it is not a H/W problem since the mouse and keyboard work fine with windows7 Booted with ubuntu installation dvd and ran trial mode and mouse and keyboard worked fine. Tried bypassing the login screen by booting into recovery mode and editing tty1.conf, but to no avail. I moved .Xauthority .profile and .bashrc from my $HOME to another location so my login would proceed completely by system defaults. But this did not help From recovery mode commandline used to dpkg-reconfigure to switch between gdm and lightgdm. This did not help either. By the way, when in recovery mode as root from command line I mount the filesystem, all apps work fine. Python is Ok, octave is ok, vi is ok etc. I have a feeling if I could only bypass the login screen, and automatically get into the desktop, I will be ok. But I haven't been able to accomplish this either. I desperately need help please. Thank you in advance. Update: So I tried to switch to lightdm by dpkg-configure lightdm. This at least brings me up to the classical linux commandline login prompt but without a gui. Should I install startx? Should I install ubuntu-desktop?

• How can I get started using TDD to code some simple functionality?

  I basically have the gist of TDD. I'm sold that it's useful and I've got a reasonable command of the MSTEST framework. However, to date I have not been able to graduate to using it as a primary development method. Mostly, I use it as a surrogate for writing console apps as test drivers (my traditional approach). The most useful thing about it for me is the way it absorbs the role of regression testing. I have not yet built anything yet that specifically isolates various testable behaviors, which is another big part of the picture I know. So this question is to ask for pointers on what the first test(s) I might write for the following development task: I want to produce code that encapsulates task execution in the fashion of producer/consumer. • Cannot activate num pad at all

  I have two accounts on the same machine. Num pad on one account it working normally e.g. I can turn it ON/OFF via NumLock button. The num pad on the other account on this machine stopped working. I cannot turn it on and the buttons work as the NumLock is turned off. This happened without me touching any setting or all. It just happened and now I cannot turn them on no matter what I try. I tried via console command numlockx on - did not help. Tried via UI setting - did not help either. Updated the system from 11.10 to 12.04, did not help either. I really do not know what to do except I make a clean reinstallation of the system which would take 2 days away from me. It's obviously the problem in this account only, as num pad works in the other account. Anyone with a good suggestion?

• Configuring Team Foundation Server Basic on Home Server.

  For the installation I selected only the Team Foundation Server role. Then, I opened the Team Foundation Server Administration Console (which I think is a great addition and improvement over the way TFS was configured in the past) to proceed with the configuration of the pieces. Once I selected the Configure Installed Features, the Configuration Center opened up. Now, the choices … In my implementation here I just want to take advantage of Source Control primarily.  I want to be able to store my code and projects.  So, Basic it is! So, the Basic Configuration Wizard opens up.  Now the options to configure are very limited, but we have to provide details for the SQL Server Instance. And now, to select Install SQL Server express.  If you want to take advantage of another system in your environment to host your database, well you could Use an existing SQL Server Instance. Once it has the details it needs, you get a Summary view to confirm your choices. Once, you click next or verify, it runs readiness checks on your system to make sure the installation will have a successful pass.  And we love GREEN! Now, since got the green flag, our next stop is to let the wizard do its magic, click on Configure.  And once again, we love GREEN! We click Next, and … We like a big Green Success sign … We close the Configuration Center … First results … Web Access …  Nothing to show … but we are there! And all this running from a Microsoft Home Server installation.

• Network connection fails when downloading data

  In the past few weeks, I've noticed my network connection becoming unstable while downloading files. I'm not sure how to diagnose this issue. I've found that my network connections appear to be temporarily unresponsive (for periods up to a minute or so) while I'm downloading a file (that's large enough to not be downloaded instantly). The problem occurs when downloading data through a webbrowser, but also when using SCP to download data from a remote location. During the period in which network connections are unresponsive, every resource that I try to access over the network is unavailable. This includes: The download itself (SCP reports a 'stalled' download) Web pages (won't load - browsers report 'resource unavailable') SSH sessions (CLI freezes) VPN connections (connections terminate) IM client connections (client starts reconnection attempts) ... (everything is pretty much dead) I've noticed that during such a period, I cannot even access the (web-based) administrative console of the router on my LAN at home (although it remains reachable for other devices). The problem occurs when connected to my home network, but also when I'm in the office. Other devices than my laptop are not affected. Given the above two characteristics I assume the problem cause lies within my laptop, not the network infrastructure. I'm running Ubuntu 11.10. Apart from applying automatic updates from Ubuntu, I can't think of a change that I applied to the OS that could have started the problems. I'm absolutely positive that this issue did not occur up to a few weeks ago (as it's very noticeable, and only started to annoy me in the last few days). When the problem occurs, applications that make use of a network connection fail visibly (I get popups telling me that a VPN connection is broken, for instance). The network manager does not report any issues related to my wifi-connection though. Help?

Likely to be reproduced when: You will usually encounter this problem when you have downloaded a sample application that is a 32-bit application targeted for ASP.NET 2.0 or 3.5, and you have IIS7 on a 64-bit OS running .NET 4.0, because the default setting for running 32-bit application on IIS7 with 64-bit OS is false. Resolution: 1. Go to IIS Management Console Start -> Administration Tools -> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager 2. Expand your server in the left pane and go to Application Pools 3. Right click to select ‘Add Application Pool’  4. Create anew AppPool. I have named it ASP.NET v2.0 AppPool (32-bit) and selected .NET Framework v2.0.50727 because I intend to run my ASP.NET 3.5 application on it. 5. Now right click the newly created AppPool and select Advanced Settings 6. Change the property “Enable 32-Bit Applications” from False to True  7. Now select your actual web application from the left panel. Right click the web application, and go to Manage Application -> Advanced Settings  8.   For my education I have to make a basic game in HTML5 canvas. The game is a shooter game. When you can move left - right and space is shoot. When I shoot the bullets will move up. The enemy moves down. When the bullet hits the enemy the enemy has to dissapear and it will gain +1 score. But the enemy will dissapear after it comes up the screen. • Pandaboard crash on startup or freeze after minutes

  I just received my Pandaboard ES (rev B) and I am having trouble after installing ubuntu-omap4-addons. Once I copied the image ubuntu-12.04-preinstalled-desktop-armhf+omap4.img on my sd card and boot the pandaboard with it, I run the following commands: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiomap-dev/release sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get install ubuntu-omap4-extras At the end of the installation of ubuntu-omap4-extras, Ubuntu tells me that a problem occurs when the console displays: ldconfig deferred processing now taking place Clicking on "report the problem" tell me that the problem concerns pvr-omap4-dkms. I read somewhere that this can happen and it is better to reinstall pvr-omap4-dkms. Which I am doing by running: sudo apt-get install --reinstall pvr-omap4-dkms I reboot. Then the board has sometimes difficulties to start Ubuntu: it freezes during the loading page, only action I can do is unplugging the board to start it again. Some other times, Ubuntu load successfully but then freeze at another random time, in the range 20 - 40 minutes. I searched on internet for similar bug and found this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ti-omap4/+bug/971091 So I typed this in: update-rc.d ondemand disable apt-get -y install cpufrequtils echo 'ENABLE="true" GOVERNOR="performance" MAX_SPEED="0" MIN_SPEED="0"' > /etc/default/cpufrequtils cpufreq-set -r -g performance reboot But it doesn't seems to fix the bug. • Ubuntu server 11.04 recognize only 1 core instead of 4

  I searched for other questions and googled a lot but I don't find a solution for solving this problem. Ubuntu Server 11.04 64bit installed on Dell Poweredge with Intel Xeon X5450. He only recognize 1 of the 4 cores I have. Tried to modify the GRUB config but didn't work. IN the machine BIOS I didn't find anything useful. • Getting the PC speaker to beep

  There has been much written on getting the beep sound from Ubuntu releases over the years. Example: fixing the beep My needs are slightly different in that I do not want to ensure sound card beeps are functioning. Instead, I want PC speaker beeps, the kind produced by the original built-in speaker because I believe they will produce less CPU load. I have confirmed that my computer has the PC speaker by unplugging the external speakers and shutting down Ubuntu. At some point in the shutdown and restart process a beep is heard even though the external speakers have no power. I have tried the following: In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, turn these lines into comments: #blacklist snd_pcsp #blacklist pcspkr In .bashrc /usr/bin/xset b on /usr/bin/xset b 100 Enable in the gnome terminal: Edit Profile Prefs General Terminal Bell Ensure no "mute" selections in: System Prefs Sound various tabs (uncheck them all). Select "Enable window and button sounds" in: System Prefs Sound Sound Effects In gconf-editor desktop gnome sound, select the three sound check boxes. In gconf-editor apps metacity general select the audible bell check box. Still I get no PC speaker beeps when I send code 7 to the console via my Java program or use echo -e '\a' on the bash command line. What else should I try? Update Since my goal is to minimize load on the CPU, here is a comparison of elapsed times. Each test is for 100,000 iterations.
