  • C#, why does Convert.ToBoolean("0") fail?

    I know that trying to convert string "0" to boolean will fail, I also know how to fix this, thanks to Jon Skeets answers on other questions. What I would like to know is WHY does C# not recognise "0" as a valid input for a boolean conversion, surely you could look at it like 0 = false, 1 = true, or even -1 = false and 0 = true, anyways, my logic tells me that it could be a valid input, so is there a very good reason why its not? My bet is old vb6 would be able to recognize the string input "0" as valid.

    Is there a library or good tutorial which covers creating in-app settings, like this: http://img.skitch.com/20090625-s8bf6ahybwe3cesd1id38h3nt.jpg What I would like is if it: doesn't use the built-in Settings app is controlled by a plist file with various Dictionaries and Arrays creates a nice looking table view allows text fields as well as switches and sliders and ticks etc doesn't have any of the annoying problems I've come across when trying to build my own version (not scrolling to show the textfield, cells disappearing) It would appear that the iphone dev world is crying out for such a thing. I get the menuname in the routes.rb and it's call the static controller show method. match '/:menuname' = 'static#show' And static_controller.rb: @static=Staticpage.where("menuname = ?", params[:menuname]) But if I want print @static.title in the view, I get this error: undefined method `title' for # Whats wrong? the SQL query looks good: SELECT staticpages.* FROM staticpages WHERE (menuname = 'asd')

    So, I want to be able to modify already instanced C++ objects in a scripting language. I have been looking at Lua with LuaBind and Python with SWIG or Boost::Python, but all I see is how to make new instances of the objects, but I want to modify already existing ones. Example: C++: Player playerOne = new Player(); Scripting Language : playerOne.Transform.x += 5; Is this possible, and if so, wat would you suggest as a good Language/library to achieve this with?

  • How much memory does a hashtable use?

    Would a hashtable/hashmap use a lot of memory if it only consists of object references and int's? As for a school project we had to map a database to objects (that's what being done by orm/hibernate nowadays) but eager to find a good way not to store id's in objects in order to save them again we thought of putting all objects we created in a hashmap/hashtable, so we could easily retrieve it's ID. My question is if it would cost me performance using this, in my opinion more elegant way to solve this problem.

    How do you reload an application's configuration? Or, what are good strategies for managing dynamic application configuration? For example, let's say I had log levels and I wanted to change them at runtime. Also, let's assume this is one of many such options. Does it make sense to have a "configuration server" that holds configuration state for other parts of the application to query? Do people do that or did I just make it up?
