Rsyslog has become the default on most linux distro. Requirements have changed (security, software configuration management, ...). I'd like to ask the following questions : How do you centralize, display and archive system logs? How would you like to do it now if you had to? Most linux distro use rsyslog nowadays, which can provide reliable log transport. But some older unices, network devices and maybe windows box still use old udp rfc-style transport. How did you manage to get reliable transport? Storing logs for a few months can represent a huge amount of disk space. How do you store them? rdbms? Compressed and encrypted text files?

  I am trying to connect to the MS SQL database using freetds and unixodbc. I have read various guides how to do it, but no one works fine for me. When I try to connect to the database using isql tool, I get the following error: $ isql -v TS username password [IM002][unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified [ISQL]ERROR: Could not SQLConnect Have anybody already successfully established the connection to the MS SQL database using freetds and unixodbc on Ubuntu 12.04? Edit n°1 installed xsane (via Ubuntu Software Center), launched it and get the following: Clicking on "Help" yields: I tried 4) man sane-dll which yields No manual entry for sane-dll I uninstalled "Simple Scan": didn't help. I tried 3) but aborted due to unsettling warning ;) wasn't that brave (or desperate). Maybe it's due to 1) and I'm stuck with it? Is it really not possible that a driver for either Windoze or Mac OS would also support scanning via Ubuntu? Edit n°2 Resorted to Windows XP and the Network TWAIN Driver ScanRouter or the "lite" version (which I found elsewhere) might also work (under Linux??); but it's more than I need. Thought about WINE, but also that seems to rely on SANE... So still no luck with this device's scanning capabilities with Linux (but good enough (via xp) for my purposes)...

• Using smartctl to get vendor specific Attributes from ssd drive behind a SmartArray P410 controller

  Hi! Recently I have deployed some HP server with SSD's behind a SmartArray P410 controller. While not official supported from HP the server work well sofar. Now I like to get wear level info's, error statistics etc from the drive. While the SA P410 supports a passthru of the SMART Command to a single drive in the array the output I was not able to the the interesting things from the drive.   I know that I can create a simple little Qt based application that adds and read png metadata, using the QImage.setText(...) and QImage.text(...). That metadata can then be read with a linux command called pngmeta. But what other image software can I use to read out the png metadata? • Why does cd print when run in command substitution?

  If I use the 'cd' BASH built-in in a command substitution, it prints extra stuff to stdout, but only when piped to, eg., less. $ echo `cd .` # The output is a single newline, appended by echo. $ echo `cd .` | less # less displays: ESC]2;my.hostname.com - tmp/testenv^G (END) What's going on there? This behavior isn't documented in the bash man page for cd. Obviously, running just 'cd' in a command substitution is silly, but something like NEWDIR=`cd mypath; pwd` could be useful. I solved this by instead using NEWVAR=`cd mypath > /dev/null 2>&1; pwd` but I still want to know what's going on. • wget works with company proxy but apt-get and dpkg doesn't

  Hi, I am trying to install some software in a fresh install of Linux dnoseda 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux. I already set the variables http_proxy, https_proxy and ftp_proxy and wget works perfectly. But when I try with apt-get it blocks trying to conect directly to the site, without the proxy. Or the other behavior that I got is a lots of 407 authentication errors. But the wget of those packages works perfectly. It's something missing? Can you help me? thanks in advance.

  I'm very new to VirtualBox. I set up an Arch Linux VM and a Ubuntu VM (Ubuntu host), both sharing the same .vdi like so (I had in my mind a dual-boot situation): VDI file (25GB) |- /dev/sda1: 5GB (Arch Linux) |- /dev/sda2: [Ubuntu] |- /dev/sda5 (swap, 1GB) |- /dev/sda6 Ubuntu /, 9GB |- /dev/sda7 Ubuntu /home, 10GB I've now realised that I don't want a dual-boot-type setup, I'd rather boot each machine independently (my initial thought was to share /home between Ubunto and Arch). So, my question: Can I split /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 each to their own .vdi files so I can use them as completely separate machines? I'd rather not have to re-install either Arch (because it took me ages to work it out!) or Ubuntu (because I've already done a few GB of updates and don't want to redo them). I haven't been able to find anything about this - most questions I see are about converting a .vdi to a partition on the host, or splitting a .vdi into multiple smaller files (that are not independent), or converting a partition on the host to a .vdi file. cheers.

  Lately I had Entity Framework 4.0 session where I introduced new features of Entity Framework. During session I found out with audience how Entity Framework 4.0 can generate optimized SQL. After session I also showed guys one horrible example about how awful SQL can be generated by Entity Framework. In this posting I will cover both examples. Optimal SQL Before going to code take a look at following model. There is class called Event and I will use this class in my query. Here is the LINQ To Entities query that uses small anonymous type. var query = from e in _context.Events             select new { Id = e.Id, Title = e.Title }; Debug.WriteLine(((ObjectQuery)query).ToTraceString()); Running this code gives us the following SQL. SELECT      [Extent1].[event_id] AS [event_id],      [Extent1].[title] AS [title]  FROM [dbo].[events] AS [Extent1] This is really small – no additional fields in SELECT clause. Nice, isn’t it? Conclusion Entity Framework 4.0 is new product with a lot of new features and it is clear that not everything is 100% super in its first release.   Hi, How do I "map" shared folders on a Mac, permanently? With map, I do not mean 'connect', but permanently add it to the system so it exists after reboot. Since workstations tend to shutdown, I wonder also the symptoms and cures in case that happens. In Linux, this can be done using the fstab file, but I noticed that volumes are mounted in a different structure than Linux. I need this to backup some workstations, doing a recursive job over a single directory, that should contain the shared folders. I use Terminal to access the main system, so by preference, the solution would be nice that works within a bash shell vs GUI. I can access all folders in Finder. Thanks!

The development environment is working with a database in MySQL running on debian etch version mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.32, for pc-linux-gnu (i486) using readline 5.2. The production environment is working on debian lenny with version mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.51a, for debian-linux-gnu (i486) using readline 5.2. I was just timing some database access and what takes in the development environment 150 seconds, takes 300 in the production environment. I checked the /etc/mysql/my.cnf files on both systems and the only differences are # development bind-address = 10.168.1.82 log_bin = /var/log/mysql/mysql-bin.log # production bind-address = 127.0.0.1 myisam-recover = BACKUP #log_bin = /var/log/mysql/mysql-bin.log I dump a database from the production and load it into the development and with the same server everything takes half the time !!! What should I check?
