• Does a longer registration length/period for a domain name improve its SEO and search ranking?

  While I was renewing a domain of mine with a well-known domain registrar, the support person who was on call with me said that I'd improve the SEO ranking of my domain if I increased the registration length from 1 year to 5 years instead. The explanation that he gave me was something along the lines that a search engine like Google doesn't like to send users to domains and businesses that may no longer exist, and that by registering my domain for 5 years instead of just 1, Google would have higher confidence that I'm serious about keeping my business around for the long-term. Needless to say, I was quite skeptical. Does the registration/renewal length of a domain name affect its SEO and search result ranking for search engines such as Google?

• How to make Firefox windows style less space consuming?

  Firefox takes up so much space on small screens, so I'm searching for solutions that make firefox' interface less space consuming on ubuntu 12.04 with gnome3. Good examples are the chromium-style, but chromium is kind of slow in gnome3. Chromium does it, firefox on osx does it. Is this also possible on ubuntu via a custom modification or something? • Xubuntu, LXDE, USB Booting

  Welcome, My problem appeared today - I was using Xubuntu for a long time, but find out that LXDE should be faster than Xfce, so I installed it. After installing I followed tutorial for removing Xfce, cause disk in my computer is very small and I wanted to release some free space. I used command from this tutorial: How to remove xubuntu-desktop? but instead of remove I entered purge command… and rebooted at the end. And I uninstalled whole my things. The problem is in installing system again - it's old Sony Vaio laptop (PCG-GR250) and I have broken CD-DVD drive. It's possible to boot from USB? I can access recovery mode, will this help me? Please answer fast, because it's my brother computer, and his going to kill me if I won't fix this fast :(

• Best way to find freelance c# developer

  I am a developer based in London developing a desktop WPF business application using c# (+ MVVM/DDD/Nhibernate/Unity/Postsharp...). I need to find someone to review my code to suggest improvements and then to write integration tests. This could potentially be an ongoing relationship, expanding into writing new features etc. It would suit an experienced developer with a strong interest in design principles and writing clean code, who can work part time. However, the developer would need to work at my home based office (although timing is flexible). Websites such as elance and odesk seem to tie you in, and I would prefer to pay a one off introduction fee and then deal with the developer direct. Stack exchange seems quite expensive but is a possibility if I don't find an alternative. So, are there any other websites I can try?

• SEO blog Indexing: wordpress.com subdomain vs a registered domain?

  I've used WordPress for a few of my client's sites, mostly small businesses and eCommerce sites. I have found through Google Analytics as well as the All in One Webmaster plugin that when it comes to social media, using WordPress is a surefire way of getting your site indexed by Google and occasionally Bing and Yahoo. Since I am a heavy WP user, I'd like to contribute by registering a dot WordPress domain for my portfolio. When using a WP installation concurrently with a WP domain, e.g. myportfolio.wordpress.com, will the site be more or less likely to be indexed rather a generic myportfolio.com domain? I've seen mixed opinions where people seem to favor a WP domain for URL output where others say that it's a moot point, and that Google will not favor a WP domain over a dot com domain as long as your meta tags are updated and content is keyword optimized. I tend to disagree and believe a WP domain would more likely be indexed and output more URLs over an individual, laconic domain like myportfolio.com. Am I wrong?

• Design documents as part of Agile

  At my workplace, we face a challenge in that "agile" too often has meant "vague requirements, bad acceptance criteria, good luck!" We're trying to address that, as a general improvement effort. So, as part of that, I am proposing that we generate design documents that, above and beyond the user story level, accurately reflect the outcome of preliminary investigations of the effect of a given feature within the system and including answers to questions that we have asked the business. Is there an effective standard for this? We currently face a situation where a new feature may impact multiple areas in our "big ball of mud" system, and estimates are starting to climb due to this technical debt. Hopefully more thoughtful design processes can help.

  My friend and I are going to write a multiplayer, multiplatform RTS game and are currently analyzing the costs of going with a client-server architecture. The game will have a small map with mostly characters, not buildings (think of DotA or League of Legends). The authoritative game logic will run on the server and message packet sizes will be highly optimized. We'd like to know approximately how much server bandwidth our proposed RTS game would use on a monthly basis, considering these theoretical constants: 100 concurrent users maximum 8 players maximum per game 10 ticks per second Bonus: If you can tell us approximately how much server RAM this kind of game would use that would also help a great deal.   EDIT 1: It seems that paypals micropayment system is currently my best option to retaining as much of the $1 as possible. Does anyone know of a way to retain even more of the $1? ORIGINAL QUESTION: I need to receive money from users from my webpage. They will only pay very small amounts, i.e. $1 max, but the total will probably go upto $10,000.00.   Given n sets of items. Each item has a value. The items in a set have similar values but vary by a small amount. The goal is to create new sets containing three items selected from the original sets such that the total of the values is within a given range. Only one item a source set can be selected. For example: If we have the following starting sets: Set A - { 4.0, 3.8, 4.2 } Set B - { 7.0, 6.8, 7.2 } Set C - { 1.0, 0.9, 1.1 } Set D - { 6.5, 6.4, 6.6 } Set E - { 2.5, 2.4, 2.6 } Goal is to create sets containing three elements such that the total is between 11.9 and 12.1. For example { 3.8, 7.2, 1.0 } There can be unused elements. Can someone suggest an algorithm for this problem?

• Unable to Mount Seagate Array from Iomega

  I am new to Ubuntu so please be kind! My (Windows based) Iomega Storcentre ix2-200 stopped working, with all my business data upon it. Iomega helpfully told me that I should get Fedora, remove the Seagate hard drives and recover the information by connecting via a USB / SATA cable. First I could not get Fedora to load (due to it needing an Internet connection before loading complete) so I got Ubuntu - much easier to load. Software seems fine, and in "Computer" there is an "Array" icon - this is clearly the Seagate hard drive I have connected. It will not, however, Mount. "Unable to mount location, can't mount file". Any help gratefully received! As a slight aside, I can't seem to find "terminal" in this version of Ubuntu?

• Q&amp;A: Will my favourite ORM Foo work with SQL Azure?

  short answer: Quite probably, as SQL Azure is very similar to SQL Server longer answer: Object Relational Mappers (ORMs) that work with SQL Server are likely but not guaranteed to work with SQL Azure. The differences between the RDBMS versions are small – but may cause problems, for example in tools used to create the mapping between objects and tables or in generated SQL from the ORM which expects “certain things” :-) More specifically: ADO.NET Entity Framework / LINQ to Entities can be used with SQL Azure, but the Visual Studio designer does not currently work. You will need to point the designer at a version of your database running of SQL Server to create the mapping, then change the connection details to run against SQL Azure. LINQ to SQL has similar issues to ADO.NET Entity Framework above NHibernate can be used against SQL Azure DevExpress XPO supports SQL Azure from version 9.3 DataObjects.Net supports SQL Azure Open Access from Telerik works “seamlessly”  - their words not mine :-) The list above is by no means comprehensive – please leave a comment with details of other ORMs that work (or do not work) with SQL Azure. • Is there a point to writing in C or C++ instead of C# without knowing specifically what would make a program faster?

  I wrote a small library in Python for handling the xbox 360's STFS files to be used on my web applications. I would like to rewrite it for use in the many desktop programs people are writing for 360 game modding, but I'm not quite if I should continue using C# or delve into C++ or even C. STFS is an in-file file system used by the xbox 360 and the job of the library would be extracting/injecting files, which could take noticeable amounts of time to do. What I know in C# comes from internet tutorials and resources, as would anything I learn about C++, so what I'm asking is if it's better to bring myself to a slightly lower-level language without knowing beforehand the features of the language that increase performance, or continue assuming that compiler optimizations and that my lack of experience will mean that the language I choose won't matter.

  I've got a question concerning node.js performance. There is quite lot of "benchmarks" and a lot of fuss about great performance of node.js. But how does it stand in real world? Not just process empty request at high speed. If someone could try to compare this scenario: Java (or equivalent) server running an application with complex business logic between receiving request and sending response. How would node.js deal with it? If there was need for a lot of JavaScript processing on server side, is node.js really so fast that it can execute JavaScript, and stand a chance against more heavyveight competitors?

• Changing DisplayMode seems not to update Input&Graphic Dimension

  I'm writing a small game using Slick and Nifty-GUI. At the program startup I set the DisplayMode using the following lines: AppGameContainer app = new ... app.setDisplayMode( 800, 600, false ); app.start(); I wrote a Nifty-ScreenController for my settings dialog in which the user can select the desired DisplayMode. When I try to set the new DisplayMode within this controller class the game window gets resized correctly but the Graphics and Input objects aren't updated accordingly. Therefore my rendering code just uses a part of the new window. I tried to set different DisplayModes in the main method to test if it's generally possible to invoke this method multiple times. It seems that changing the DisplayMode only works before I call app.start(). Furthermore I tried to update the Graphics & Input object manually but the init and setDimensions methods are package private. :( Does someone know what I'm doing wrong and how to change the DisplayMode correctly?
