• Using SQL Server specific code in Access linked to SQL Server database

  Hi, I have an access file that is linked (through an ODBC connection) to a SQL Server 2008 database. I am trying to write some reports against this database. However, Access chokes when I write the select query of the report with SQL syntax specific to SQL Server that doesn't exist in access. Shouldn't this work, since it's the SQL Server engine running the queries and just sending the data back to Access to display? Is there any way to get this to work? Need this to work on any combination of Access 2007 and 2010, and SQL Server 2005 and 2008. Edit Note: I cannot create a SQL Server stored procedure or function, or otherwise modify the original (SQL Server) schema in any way.

• SolidWorks ratio issue with printing in landscape

  We run SolidWorks 2010 on XP. On one workstation when printing to the plotter in a 1:1 ratio in landscape mode it's off by small increments. He needs to adjust manually from 1:1 to 1:1.009 (for example) in order to correctly print 1:1. The increments by which it's off varies from drawing to drawing. None of the other workstations have this issue. All five of the workstations have the same settings and all print to one networked plotter. Three out of five have the same graphics card. Scale to fit is not checked. I read this site often, but this is the first time I've posted. I'm hoping someone here has run across this before. Thanks.

• SQL SERVER – Template Browser – A Very Important and Useful Feature of SSMS

  Let me start today’s blog post with a direction question. How many of you have ever used Template Browser? Template Browser is a very important and useful feature of SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS). Every time when I am talking about SQL Server there is always someone comes up with the question, why there is no step by step procedure included in SSMS for features. Honestly every time I get this question, the question I ask back is How many of you have ever used Template Browser? I think the answer to this question is most of the time either no or we have not heard of the feature. One of the people asked me back – have you ever written about it on your blog? I have not yet written about it. Basically there is nothing much to write about it. It is pretty straight forward feature, like any other feature and it is indeed difficult to elaborate. However, I will try to give a quick introduction to this feature. Templates are like a quick cheat sheet or quick reference. Templates are available to create objects like databases, tables, views, indexes, stored procedures, triggers, statistics, and functions. Templates are also available for Analysis Services as well. The template scripts contain parameters to help you customize the code. You can Replace Template Parameters dialog box to insert values into the script. Additionally users can create new custom templates as well with folder structure. To open a template from Template Explorer Go to View menu >> Template Explorer or type CTRL+ALT+L. You will find a list of categories click on any category and expand the folder structure. For our sample example let us expand Index Folder. In this folder you will notice the various T-SQL Scripts. These scripts can be opened by double click or can be dragged to editor area and modified as needed. Sample template is now available in the query editor area with all the necessary parameter place folder. You can replace the same parameter by typing either CTRL+SHIFT+M or by going to Query Menu >> Specify Values for Template Parameters. In this screen it will show  Specify Values for Template Parameters dialog box, accept the value or replace it with a new value. This will now get your script ready to go. Check it one more time and change the script to fit your requirement. I personally use template explorer for two things. First one is obviously for templates but the hidden one and an important one is for learning new features and T-SQL commands. There is so much to learn and so little time. • Opening password protected Excel 2007 documents by double clicking from My documents does not work u

  When all of the following conditions are true, excel will open (most of the time) but will not open the document itself. No error is displayed. This only occurs with Excel files, Word and powerpoint do open perfectly. Conditions : OS is "Windows 7 Professional 64-bit" office is "Office 2007 Ultimate". excel file is in .xls (2003 format) excel file is password protected excel file is in "My Documents" (or a subfolder of it) file is double-clicked from explorer under Windows 7. Following options do open the excel file as it should : right click and selecting the (bold) open action single click the file and pressing enter moving the file to the desktop and double-click it. non password protected files do open from the same directory. Actions taken not resolving the problem: - reboot - repair office installation - system restore does not work because of Antivirus application installed (message from system restore, using "Symantec Internet Security 2010") Anyone any idea ?

  In this post I will show you how easy is to sort the columns of an HTML table. I will use an external library,called Tablesorter which makes life so much easier for developers. ?here are other posts in my blog regarding JQuery.You can find them all here. You can find another post regarding HTML tables and JQuery here. We will demonstrate this with a step by step example. I will use Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate. You can also use Visual Studio 2012 Express Edition. You can also use VS 2010 editions.   1) Launch Visual Studio. Create an ASP.Net Empty Web application. Choose an appropriate name for your application. 2) Add a web form, default.aspx page to the application. 3) Add a table from the HTML controls tab control (from the Toolbox) on the default.aspx page 4) Now we need to download the JQuery library. Please visit the http://jquery.com/ and download the minified version.Then we need to download the Tablesorter JQuery plugin. Please donwload it, here. 5) We need to reference the JQuery library and the external JQuery Plugin. • ASP.NET MVC Resource not found

  I am working on an MVC project in Visual Studio 2010 with .NET Framework 4.0 + MVC2 and everything works if I set the target framework to .NET 4.0. However, my host does not offer .NET 4.0 in order to deploy the site I need to get it working on .NET 3.5. I tried converting it to ASP.NET 3.5 and everything builds just fine except now when I try to load the homepage, I get a 404 Error saying: The resource cannot be found. Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly. • New York Alt.NET Dinner

  While I was in the New York area Stephen Bohlen graciously organised an Alt.NET dinner. I left Rockville Centre on the 17:15 train, thinking I had plenty of time to get to Toloache Mexican Bistro on W 50th St. However, when I changed at Penn Station I took the service downtown, instead of uptown. I corrected that mistake and made it to 51st St, but then ended up in completely the wrong place because I did not understand the street numbering system. For future reference I now have the following rules for NYC navigation: Uptown means North, Downtown means South Streets run East-West, Avenues North-South Street number are symmetrical on the 5th Avenue axis. That is, street numbers increase from zero both east and west of 5th Av. Having gotten totally confused I called Steve, who helped me find the restaurant. I still had my luggage, which we stowed in a corner. Over some descent Mexican food we had some great discussions about Alt.NET, the 2010 conference, and other things of interest to Alt.NET folks. Thanks to Steve for organising and to all the guys who turned up.

  Some time back I posted a blog entry (mirrored here and here) asking you how you design databases. Out of those responses, my own experience, studies I read, and interviews I conducted, I collected a wealth of data. Thanks for your responses. So what am I going to do with that information? Well, all along I had planned for that to be used today. I am giving a presentation at an event called “TechReady” called “How Your Customers Design Databases”. This is a Microsoft-internal event, where technical professionals like myself, salespeople, and the product team get together to talk about what has been working, what doesn’t, what is coming and hopefully (fingers crossed here) what the product team can do to help us help the SQL Server community. I’ve mentioned before that I teach database design as part of a course I run at the University of Washington. I’m also planning to give a mini-lecture from that series at TechEd 2010, so if you’re coming stop by. I’d love to meet you. So today I talk about you – thanks for the input. I hope you and I can make a difference in the product. Might take a while, but it’s nice to know your voice is being heard. • Multiple Memcached server /etc/init.d startup script that works ?

  I install memcached server via source and can get standard start up script installed for 1 memcached server instance, but trying several scripts via google, can't find one that works to manager auto start up on boot for multiple memcached server instances. • Sending mail to local address crashes web server (sendmail)

  When trying to send mail automatically from a script at example.com via PHP's mail() to [email protected], the Apache server throws an Internal Error. I believe internally it is configured to use sendmail. The message gets dropped into ~/dead.letter and the general error log reads: [Wed May 12 11:26:45 2010] [error] [client xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] malformed header from script. Bad header=/home/example/dead.letter... S: /home/example/www/test.php Trying any other address, not @example.com, works just fine. I have googled and serverfaulted for solutions, but they all require to edit configuration files in /etc/mail and similar system places, which is not an option, since this problem occurs on a shared host in which I only have access to ~/. Does anyone have a suggestion?

  At SSW we have always sent done emails to the owner/requestor to let them know that it is done. Others who are dependent on that tasks are CC’ed so they know they can proceed. But how does that fit into Scrum?   Update 14th April 2010 Rule added to Rules to better Scrum with TFS If you are working on a task: When you complete a Task that is part of a User Story you need to send a done email to the Owner of that Story. You only need to add the Task #, Summary and link to the item in WIWA. Remember that all your tasks should be under 4 hours, do spending lots of time on a Done Email for a Task would be counter productive. Add more information if required, for example you may have completed the task a different way than previously discussed.  Make sure that every User Story has an Owner as per the rules. If you are the owner of a story: When you complete a story you should send a comprehensive done email as per the rules when the story had been completed. Make sure you add a list of all of the Tasks that were completed as part of the story and the Done criteria that you completed. If your done criteria says: Built Successfully 30% Code Coverage All tests passed Then add an illustration to show this. Figure: Show that you have met your Done criteria where possible.   This is all designed to help you Scrum Team members (Product Owner, ScrumMaster and Team) validate the quality of the work that has been completed.   I used Acronis True Image Home 2010 to clone a Dane-Elec zLight 8Gb pen drive/USB flash drive to a PNY Attaché 16Gb USB flash drive. Now WinXP shows the drive in device manager as USB DISK 2.0 USB DEVICE but doesn't have it in My Computer/doesn't assign it a drive letter. What is it that has messed up the PNY Attaché and is there some way to repair it so that it can be used as a regular USB flash drive again? Is there a safe way to clone a USB flash drive to another larger one? How safe is it to backup and restore a USB flash drive to/from a drive-image?

• Creating a Strong Bridge to the Post PC World

• Common request: export #Tabular model and data to #PowerPivot

  I received this request in many courses, messages and also forum discussions: having an Analysis Services Tabular model, it would be nice being able to extract a correspondent PowerPivot data model. In order of priority, here are the specific feature people (including me) would like to see: Create an empty PowerPivot workbook with the same data model of a Tabular model Change the connections of the tables in the PowerPivot workbook extracting data from the Tabular data model Every table should have an EVALUATE ‘TableName’ query in DAX Apply a filter to data extracted from every table For example, you might want to extract all data for a single country or year or customer group Using the same technique of applying filter used for role based security would be nice Expose an API to automate the process of creating a PowerPivot workbook Use case: prepare one workbook for every employee containing only its data, that he can use offline Common request for salespeople who want a mini-BI tool to use in front of the customer/lead/supplier, regardless of a connection available This feature would increase the adoption of PowerPivot and Tabular (and, therefore, Business Intelligence licenses instead of Standard), and would probably raise the sales of Office 2013 / Office 365 driven by ISV, who are the companies who requests this feature more. If Microsoft would do this, it would be acceptable it only works on Office 2013. But if a third-party will do that, it will make sense (for their revenues) to cover both Excel 2010 and Excel 2013. Another important reason for this feature is that the “Offline cube” feature that you have in Excel is not available when your PivotTable is connected to a Tabular model, but it can only be used when you connect to Analysis Services Multidimensional. • How many hours of use before I need to clean a tape drive?

  I do backups to a HP Ultrium 2 tape drive (HP StorageWorks Ultrium 448). The drive has a 'Clean' LED that supposedly will light up or blink when the drive needs to be cleaned. The drive has been in use since october 2005, and still the 'Clean' light has never been lit. The drive statistics are: Total hours in use: 1603 Total bytes written: 19.7 TB Total bytes read: 19.3 TB My question is: How many hours of use can I expect before I need to clean the drive? Edit: I have not encountered any errors using the drive. I do restore tests every two months, and every backup is verified. Edit 2: The user manual says: "HP StorageWorks Ultrium tape drives do not require regular cleaning. An Ultrium universal cleaning cartridge should only be used when the orange Clean LED is flashing." Update: It is now May 2010 (4.5 years of use), and the LED is still off, I have not cleaned, backups verify and regular restore tests are done.
