• What is the best way to promote a programming blog?

  (The guys from 'Programmers' referred me here...) How do you promote your programming blog? I recently started http://blackforestcoder.blogspot.com/ to record my progress working with new technologies and ideas. The main aim being to provide a list of pitfalls and solutions and also to get feedback from readers. Since I set it up 10 days ago I have only had about 2-3 hits even though Google is supposed to be indexing it. How might I boost the hit rate?

• Is it considered blackhat SEO to have hidden text within links?

  My aim is to simply be informative about where a link is pointing to search engines. I have some content that is listed by name and then I have a "Permalink" button. Would it be blackhat SEO to add some hidden text within the anchor that describes where the permalink is pointing? My content is like so: News Item 1 Permalink (<a href="/my-news-item-1"><hidden>News Item 1</hidden> Permalink</a>) Teaser text.. The news title of the block already links to the article, but I think it would be of benefit to users to provide and explicit permalink button.

• Should you salary reflect how much work there is for you or does that not matter? [closed]

  I am working in a consulting company, where the company mostly do IT support. The website is also only focused on IT support, and we do not therefore capture leads for the Web Department. We aim for Small busniess, which needs new computers and firewalls. We were having a performance conversation and talked about salary and my employer told that he was not impressed by the revenue I was generating. I told that I did not have enough work and I would like to get more tasks and project so that i could reach the goal, but that i did not think it was my fault that there was not enough work. He said that it was not his fault either, but he could not pay me more. Is he right that I should not get paid more just because my employee can not get enough Web projects, or should i be paid what i am worth not based on the work amount the sales generate?

My aim is to insert in every post I create those nice buttons to the social networks account of my visitors so that they can quote or post the link to the blog entry in their space. • What is the best language to use for building a fulfillment engine [on hold]

  I asked this on stack overflow and was suggested to move it here. I do understand it is a matter of opinion which is exactly what I aim to achieve here... I wanted to know what you think is the best language to write a fulfillment engine in? I cannot provide much detail but I am trying to build a control interface for servers and i wanted to build a program daemon that would process data on the authoritative server and the slave servers( the backbone of the network) with their own daemons running would check regularly(every 5 minutes or so) with the authoritative server and process the commands(securely) I am trying to build this with a minimal footprint(cpu and ram wise for the slaves, authoritative is going to be scalable) and to make it automated so that the user does not have to configure the daemon(installation is automated by the authoritative server) I am leaning away from my usual php set up for simplicity sake. Edit: I am not an expert in any particular language but flexible enough and willing to learn another.

• iOS build machine setup: problem with certificates

  some background: work with multiple team mates each work on our own MBP I'm setting a build machine that we can git push to in order to generate a build (aim to allow anyone to push to the build machine and then generate an archive, upload to testflight and send on its way) problem: getting my apple developer certificates on the build machine. I installed Lion, XCode, etc and I signed into my developer account through Xcode organizer, provisioning profiles download,etc. but beside each one it says: valid signing identity not found I also download my certificate from the developer.apple.com page, imported it into keychain, etc but no luck. Anyone else have a similar issue? Or maybe hints to fix? Thanks

• Is there much difference between X86 Assembly language on Windows and Linux?

  I'm a complete beginner at Assembly, and my aim is to learn as much as I can to do with Assembly to one day I can reach expert level (I know I'm way off right now, but you never know). My only problem is this: I've got two books which both teach assembly, one on a Linux and the other on Windows. They are Jeff Duntemann's Assembly Language Step By Step (the linux one) and Introduction to 80x86 Assembly Language and Computer Architecture (the windows version). If I want to get the best out of assembly, should I do this on linux and windows? Also, is the syntax the same on Windows and Linux or will I have teach my self again when learning on the other OS( which is my main concern, I want to be able to use assembly on windows and linux).

• What algorithms would suit image colour summarization? [on hold]

  I would like to analyse a set of hundreds of thousands of product images (clothing, electronic goods etc) and retrieve the dominant colours in each. I'm only interested in the top 3 or 4 colours. The aim is to achieve a degree of certainty that x image is mostly red or image y is mostly orange and blue. The images are likely to be colour jpegs of reasonable quality and approximately 100kb in size. I would like to use C# and the solution should run on a Linux server, preferably using open source libraries. What image processing algorithms or techniques might help me achieve this?

Nevertheless, as far as I am concerned I would like to set up such a network in the Graphical User Interface (GUI) way. Please avoid solutions with the command line. So a solution suggesting to use Network Manager would be really welcomed. Please name and describe very precisely each step, so I can easily find the equivalent in my own language. • Unix as opposed to Windows (Java and C++)

  Firstly I should explain the background. I am interested in high frequency trading programming roles. After looking at many job specs it is very clear that there is a big demand for programmers who have programmed Java and C++ on Unix as opposed to Windows. My question is what are the differences a High Freq programmer would come across? It cannot be something in the language itself because syntactically they do not differ over OS? Therefore I thought it must be something which the programming language has to interface, resources etc? Could anyone please help me out as I am trying to improve my C++/Java on Unix, in order to aim for this type of career? ps I'm guessing part of this answer lies with the socket infrastructure on Unix?

But how important is the frequency of keywords for SEO optimized copy, the higher the better? Is there a certain percentage to aim at? For example, I currently have copy aimed for a specific keyword. The rate of this keyword is that it makes up 2% of all words. Is this too low? Too high? The higher the better?

  I made a website which stayed online for 6 months. During that period the search results for the site were not at all good. Even typing the domain name yielded just two or three category result. Now, I have taken the site down for total redevelopment and redesign. The aim of this question is to know the basics for SEO to be done while redesigning the site. My site will be in ASP.NET MVC 3 and will have main categories, sub categories and sub-sub if any. Then there will be products in those categories. All the data will come from MSSQL DB.   My built-in microphone doesn't work in "record audio" program and in Skype. I'm using ubuntu 11.10 in Toshiba sattelite p505 s8980. No mute button checked I have PulseAudio Volume Control installed currently when aim trying to use record audio program and hear what I record it plays noisy sound not my voice I changed my computer from 'Analog Stereo Output' to 'Analog Stereo Duplex', in both sound setting ( ubuntu ) and in PulseAudio Volume Control no problem in bios and in my windows seven sound worked perfectly and in ubuntu no problem in sound at all i can play music and movies and even in skype i can hear the sounf of who is taking to me ( it's about the microphone only "

The following codes works ok when the player is not jumping, but gets stuck in an object if the player is in the air when they do it.   So, it has been more than 3 years without a single blog post. I wished I could have a decent excuse for it, but in the end, I guess it boils down to laziness and procrastination. :-) Even though I learned a lot in that period (and added a feel tricks to my bag), I couldn’t find the will to sit down and write. I hope all my readers (yes mom and dad, I’m talking to you) have not been disappointed. I will try really hard not to let routine take over. I don’t expect I will be the most active blogger in the community, but hopefully a couple of posts per month is a good target to aim.

  I have developed a simple HTML5 webpage that uses a javascript file. This is a fun learning page so I wanted to know as to how will they show up on mobile devices like iPhone and Android smartphones. The pages are hosted on a server and i have tested the thing on my desktop. But, how can i test the same for these mobile devices. i.e. how the page will look on mobile and stuff. I don't have an iPhone or Android. There is no serious development going in here so i was thinking if there is some free website or tool that acts as a iPhone or android browser. The main aim is just to see how the webpage will show up on an android phone.

  In these days there are many projects whose aim is to bring new languages to the browser by compiling them to JavaScript. Among the others one can mention ClojureScript, CoffeScript, Dart, haXe, Emscripten, Amber Smalltalk. I understand that in part the response to this answer depends on the particular project. But, anyway: Have you tried any of them? Are these tentatives suitable for production sites? Should I want to try one of those, what are the downsides I should carefully evaluate? By the way, I expect the answer to be slightly misleading for CoffeeScript, since its semantics is very close to that of JavaScript, so I guess it should be easier to make it work seamlessly with the existing JavaScript ecosystem.

• How to run ubuntu-tweak's janitor automatically?

  My aim is to have the janitor running at startup, with a pre-configured profile (e.g. clear redundant packages and browser cache). The website is lacking any documentation or usage instructions, and I could not find any information on this here as well. I tried, naturally, to start ubuntu-tweak from the command line, hoping additional API exists that will come through in this (allegedly) simple task. I only got as far as: ubuntu-tweak -f janitor which is a step in the right direction, but what's still missing is a command for the clear action. Is such a command available, or is there any better way of achieving the desired behavior?

• Why do programming language (open) standards cost money?

  Isn't it counter-productive to ask for 384 Swiss franks for C11 or 352 Swiss franks for C++11, if the aim is to make the standards widely adopted? Please note, I'm not ranting at all, and I'm not against paying; I would like to understand the rationale behind setting the prices as such, especially knowing that ISO is network of national standard institutes (i.e. funded by governments). And I also doubt that these prices would generate enough income to fund an organization like that, so there must be another reason.
