  • Windows 8 doesn't play nice when dual booting with Windows 7?

    I have Windows 7, and Windows 8 on my laptop. I have Windows 7 set as my default, and it asks me each time if I want to boot with 7 or 8. When I boot with Windows 8, then restart my computer, it opens up to the Windows 8 boot screen, and sets Windows 8 as my default. How can I stop it from changing my default because it's a hassle to change it each time I want to use Windows 8. EDIT: I forgot to mention that in only happens sometimes. It usually doesn't change it when I restart, but it sometimes changes it when I completely shut it off.

    OSX 10.6.3 Terminal.app Am a pretty dedicated screen user. Terminal.app line buffer and/or scroll does not seem to work for me. That is while in screen anything that goes past the top of the frame is gone, can't scroll back to. This seems to work ok in other terminal apps gnome, cygwin. Perhaps this is a shell env, config, or command? .screenrc: startup_message off autodetach on shell -$SHELL vbell off defutf8 on caption always caption string "%{= wk}%w" I have tried using defscrollback here with different values, but doesn't have an effect. some .bashrc settings: set -o physical export TERM=xterm-color shopt -s checkwinsize

VPN 1 PPTP IP : 192.168.2.0/24 DNS : 192.168.2.32; 192.168.2.34 (Windows 2003) Domain : old.com Forwarder : 192.168.2.1 (Gateway running DNS) DD-WRT VPN 2 OpenVPN using Routing -- I'm going to switch to bridging IP : 192.168.10.0/24 DNS : 192.168.10.10 (Windows 2008) Domain : xyz.dc Forwarder : 192.168.10.1 (Gateway running DNS) ClearOS When I'm connected I would like to resolve host names on both networks without fully qualifying them.

  • I have nice headphones. Need a wireless USB microphone so I don't have to switch to a headset to make a call

    Right now, I have a pair of Sennheiser HD595 headphones. They are plugged into a DAC/headphone amp. I spend all day listening to music through them and they sound awesome. Then, for making calls, I have a wireless USB headset from Logitech. Problem is, I can't make calls when I'm wearing my Sennheisers but I wouldn't want to listen to music all day using the Logitech headset. So I spend my day switching in between. So the question is, how can I make calls while wearing the headphones of my choice? One thing I thought of is a wireless USB microphone that I can clip to the Sennheisers. So I'd wear the Sennheisers with this mic all day and ditch the Logitech headset. But it doesn't look like anyone makes a microphone like this. By the way, I would love if the solution didn't transmit the sound of my clacky keyboard or noisy wood flooring.

  • How do I get `set show-all-if-ambiguous on` in my .inputrc to play nice with the Python interpreter?

    I noticed that after I added the set show-all-if-ambiguous on line to my ~/.inputrc, whenever I pressed tab to indent a block, it would show me the bash Display all ... possibilities? (y or n) prompt, and leave me unable to indent the actual code. Is there any way to keep that line in my .inputrc but still have the tab key work as expected in the Python interpreter? This is in my VirtualBox Ubuntu 12.04 VM, if it matters. EDIT: Curiously, I now have a different issue with the Python shell that comes with Django -- when I press tab, I get Python tab completion, but only with one Tab press. I've opened a separate question here for it.

  • How to find the right balance between "quick & dirty" and "nice & general" code?

    This is not a direct programming question, but a little help from the programming community would be appreciated. I am suffering from an overgeneralization disease. I can't stop spending valuable time with making my code most general and abstract. I could also call it the toolkit/library disease. I tend to turn every programming task into a general problem and try to "write a toolkit", that would work for many similar problems. I know it's a good thing in general, if there is enough time, but sometimes I should be writing a quick prototype and just can't seem to write the quick and dirty code that just works for the special case. I often get excited about an idea that makes the code more general and user-configurable and understimate the time it takes to actually implement it that way. Does anyone else have this experience? How can I force myself to find the right balance between "quick hack" and "nice solution"?

  • Is there a nice XSL stylesheet for client-side DocBook rendering?

    I want the DocBook documents in my SVN repository to look nice if someone looks at them in a web browser. I've started to write a CSS stylesheet, but I think that it will have significant limitations -- particularly ones regarding hyperlinks. There is a large body of DocBook XSL stylesheets at the DocBook site , but they don't seem to be appropriate for browser rendering. I don't want to generate static documents and put them into SVN. I want them to be basically readable for other developers without much hassle. I could write my own browser-appropriate XSL stylesheet to convert DocBook to HTML, but it seems like someone else must have already done this. I just don't know where to find it.

  • Codeigniter: A nice straight forward tutorial on how to build a reset password/forgotten password?

    I've built a full sign up system with user account activation, login, validation, captcha etc. To complete this I now need to implement a forgot password/reset password feature.. I have created one function that generates a random password 8 characters, another method that takes that random password word and applies sha1 and hashing. Also one that takes that hashed password and stores it in a table in the database. I will keep these methods to one side as they might come in handy later on but for now I would like to know if anyone can point me to a nice tutorial for creating a password reset feature for my website.     I have the following line of code: <li id="1" class=" "> <a href="">Parking Lot</a> <span id="1" class="list-edit">edit</span> </li> I then have two binds: $("#lists li").click(function(){....... $(".list-edit").click(function(){......... The problem I'm having is I need the LI to contain the EDIT span because of CSS styling reasons, I have a big blue background. But this is preventing me from binding the EDIT btn. Is there a way to get these two to play nice? Thxs

    I know that private inheritance is supported in C++ and only public inheritance is supported in C#. I also came across an article which says that private inheritance usually defines a HAS-A relationship and kind of an aggregation relationship between the classes. Another curious question is why doesn't C# support the private (and also protected) inheritance ? - Is not supporting multiple implementation inheritance a valid reason or any other? Is private (and protected) inheritance planned for future versions of C#? Will supporting the private (and protected) inheritance in C# make it a better and widely used language?

  • How to use Java varargs with the GWT Javascript Native Interface? (aka, "GWT has no printf()")

    I'm trying to quickly learn GWT as part of a new project. I found out that GWT doesn't implement Java's String.format() function, so there's no printf()-like functionality. I knew that some printf() implementations exist for Javascript, so I figured I could paste one of those in as a GWT Javascript Native Interface function. I ran into problems, and decided I'd better make sure that the varargs values were being passed in correctly. That's where things got ugly. First, some example code: // From Java, call the JSNI function: test("sourceString", "params1", "params2", "params3"); .... public static native void test(Object... params) /*-{ // PROBLEM: this kills GWT! // alert(params.length); // returns "function" alert(typeof(params)); // returns "[Ljava.lang.Object;@b97ff1" alert(params); }-*/; The GWT docs state that "calling a varargs JavaScript method from Java will result in the callee receiving the arguments in an array". I figured that meant I could at least check params.length, but accessing that throws a JavascriptException wrapped in an UmbrellaException, with no real information. When I do "typeof(params)", it returns "function". As if that weren't odd enough, if I check the string value of params, it returns what appears to be a string version of a Java reference. So, I guess I'm asking a few different questions here: 1) How do GWT/JSNI varargs actually work, and do I need to do something special to pass in values? 2) What is actually going on here? 3) Is there any easier way to get printf()-style formatting in a GWT application?

  • jquery ajax html response change 1.3.2 vs 1.4.2 (aka where is my script tag?)

    I've been using jquery 1.3.2 to pull snippets of html (including script) from a server. A typical response might be: <div id="content"<div id="inner"... <script type=... alert("hello world");</script <pHello World</p </div</div I've been using the query .get function: $.get($(this).attr("href"), function(response) { $("#inner").replaceWith($("#inner", response)); }); And everything is fine and works as expected: the returned html snippets get loaded into the DOM and the scripts run. When I use 1.4.2 however, I notice that the script tags have been removed and no longer run. Stepping into the newer jquery codebase yields the lines of code (line 4498) : ret.splice.apply( ret, [i + 1, 0].concat(jQuery.makeArray(ret[i].getElementsByTagName("script"))) ); which seems to be the culprit 'removing' the script from its happy resting place as part of the selector process. But it doesn't help me in injecting exactly what i want into the DOM. Any idea why jquery is doing this? More importantly, how can I go about fixing this so that my scripts run?

    I use everywhere NSLocalizedString(@"Text in deutsch",@"das Textfeld Text in deutsch") I have two Localizable.strings files. One for german and one for english. What I realized now is. If you have a german iPhone, you get the german text, if you have your iPhone set to english you get the english text. But if you have lets say french, then you would get the german text, too because I use german as the keys, right ? Is there a way to set english as fallback language instead of the german one used everywhere in my code ? (I have so many occurences of NSLocalizedString that it would be a pain to change the keys now everywhere (in code, in Localized.string.en and in Localized.string.de))

  • Nice, clean, simple way of getting a dataset from ASP.NET to plain HTML jQuery or JavaScript library

    I know this is a probable open ended question, and I have tried looking around so much over the last year or two... maybe I am looking for a perfect place that doesn't exist! of course it's all about perception no less.. Anyway, just to clarify what I am trying to do and why: I want to be able to use (primarily for the moment) ASP.NET or services thereof to get a dataset - whatever the source data, I can obviously get a dataset of rows/Columns. I want to be able to, as simply as possible, get that data over to the client via xml/json/whatever, to then use in a "variety" of ways. "Variety" of ways meaning I would like to "easily" bind that data to say a grid, or a combo dropdown or just simply render to a textbox - BUT by referencing the dataset as I would say on the serverside. Now I know this all sounds simplistic, and I know there are lots of complications.. so I have tried the following so far over the last year or so: ExtJS - very good, nice solid framework, but just found it a bit too much to use in everyday basic apps - great if I was building a whole application with it Yahoo YUI - not looked recently, but I guess some of the concepts with ExtJS were similar? JQuery - of course to get data etc, it was ok, and I guess there are so many 3rd party plugins, that a mix and match might work? Adobe SPRY - ironically this was as close to getting a dataset style structure to Javascript/client, although it seemed to drop off/go quiet..? I maybe wrong.. I did have a very cursory play with Tibco GI and another one I cannot remember the name of! but again, it felt like it was great to build a whole app perhaps? Anyway, I am very amazed by all of the technologies coming out, and really not biased one way or the other, I really just want a very simple way of getting data from the server, and having a basic/very flexible way of working with that data in the client without using server technologies.. I need to keep the server flexible as I may need to use PHP, or java technologies not just .NET So again, sorry for the rambles, but if anyone out there has had a simple experience, or would like to share some ideas, it would be very welcomed!!     Hello, recently I've been reading some SO archives and encountered statements against x86 architecture. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2667256/why-do-we-need-different-cpu-architecture-for-server-mini-mainframe-mixed-cor says "PC architecture is a mess, any OS developer would tell you that." http://stackoverflow.com/questions/82432/is-learning-assembly-language-worth-the-effort says "Realize that the x86 architecture is horrible at best" http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=976577 says "Most colleges teach assembly on something like MIPS because it's much simpler to understand, x86 assembly is really ugly" and many more comments like Compared to most architectures, X86 sucks pretty badly. It's definitely the conventional wisdom that X86 is inferior to MIPS, SPARC, and PowerPC x86 is ugly I tried searching but didn't find any reasons. I don't find x86 bad probably because this is the only architecture I'm familiar with. Can someone kindly give me reasons for considering x86 ugly/bad/inferior compared to others.

  • How to find control points for a BezierSegment given Start, End, and 2 Intersection Pts in C# - AKA

    Hi, I've been struggling looking for an understandable way to do this. I have four points, a StartPt, EndPoint, and Intersection points to represent the peak and valley in the bezier. The BezierSegment in C# requires start, controlPoint 1, controlPoint 2, endpoint - however I don't have any control points I only have these two points that lie along the bezier curves (i'm calling them intersection points above)... how can I calculate the two control points? Thanks in advance, this has been driving me crazy. There's some kind of explanation here: http://www.tinaja.com/glib/nubz4pts1.pdf but it's written in postscript and that language makes no sense to me at all - it's over my head.

    I have a simple has_many belongs_to relationship and I want to include the parent object for the view of the belongs_to model and I have had some success, but I want it to work better. class Submission < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user belongs_to :contest end class Contest < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user has_many :submissions, :dependent => :destroy end In the case that works, I pass contest_id to submissions by placing it in the url: <%= link_to 'Submit Contest Entry', new_submission_path(:contest_id => @contest.id), :class => 'btn btn-primary btn-large mleft10' %> So that, combined with a hidden_field: <%= f.hidden_field :contest_id %> And a find_contest method in the controller (called with a before_filter): def find_contest #the next line is giving the error (line 76) @contest = Contest.find(params[:submission][:contest_id]) end Makes it work for submissions/new, but how do I add a find to the controller that just works across more than that one page, like if I want to access in show and index.   • Is there a way to make PHP's SplHeap recalculate? (aka: add up-heap to SplHeap?)

    I am using an SplHeap to hold graph nodes of a tree with directed edges that will be traversed from the leaves to the root. For this, I precalculate the "fan-in" of nodes and put them into the heap so that I can always retrieve the node with the smallest fan-in (0) from it. After visiting a node, I reduce the fan-in of its successor by 1. Then obviously, the heap needs to be recalculated because the successor is now in the wrong place there. I have tried recoverFromCorruption(), but it doesn't do anything and keeps the heap in the wrong order (node with larger fanIn stays in front of smaller fanIn). As a workaround, I'm now creating a new heap after each visit, amounting to a full O(N*log(N)) sort each time. It should be possible, however, to make up-heap operations on the changed heap entry until it's in the right position in O(log(N)). The API for SplHeap doesn't mention an up-heap (or deletion of an arbitrary element - it could then be re-added). Can I somehow derive a class from SplHeap to do this or do I have to create a pure PHP heap from scratch?
