• Suggestions to start a cross-platform project

  I have a big project in my head, it should be cross-platform (Win, Max and Linux), online (Client - Server) and with 3D graphics. I would like some suggestions to start with the right things. Currently I'm a PHP/MySQL coder, I used to code in C and Pascal on DOS ages (Borland Times ;)), my C knowlegde need a refresh but it's ok. I guess C++ it's the right language. What platform and what i should use to code? I can choose from all three platforms. My idea was to use Visual Studio 2010 C++, but i'm not sure if it support Native code. What kind of libraries should i use? I guessed OpenSSL for the login, OpenGL for graphics part. For the Audio or the GUI? Any other suggestions are well accepted. I know it's a "BIG DEAL" but I have no rush and it'll be a free-time project, only for my pleasure. Thank you in advance.

• Which platform to choose from .Net or Java [closed]

  I know that there is a lot healthy discussion about this topic. but my case is entirely different from these discussions. I have just passed out my graduation. During the graduation period, i had done C#.net and java as well. Now i am working as Android programmer in a company. In the recent times, i have heard a lot about pros and cons of these platforms. What our seniors used to suggest that, ASP.net is a lot better than JSP for website developement. .net provides us lot of in built tools and API's for building powerfull applications. Java's platform independancy has always been issue among them. Security fetures are more in java. .Net has more powerfull IDE's. Now i am a bit confused on which platform to choose from these. I found java better from two, so did i prefer to choose android. Also, the discussion always ends with an issue that java has no scope for job as far has .net does. I would like to hear suggestions on this topic, but it would be better, if you consider indian IT market for this discussion.

• Tag Cloud JS + Flash. Actual Tags In Cloud Not Clickable?

  Hello all, I've implemented a tag cloud on a site of mine, and I'm using a JS script to populate it, but for some reason, the actual text in the tag cloud is not clickable. It displays and works correctly, but the actual text of the cloud is not getting treated as a link for some odd reason. My question is: In my script below, do you see anything that I need to fix in order to make my tag cloud's text actually be links? • Developing a Support Plan for Cloud Applications

  Last week I blogged about developing a High-Availability plan. The specifics of a given plan aren't as simple as "Step 1, then Step 2" because in a hybrid environment (which most of us have) the situation changes the requirements. There are those that look for simple "template" solutions, but unless you settle on a single vendor and a single way of doing things, that's not really viable. The same holds true for support. As I've mentioned before, I'm not fond of the term "cloud", and would rather use the tem "Distributed Computing". That being said, more people understand the former, so I'll just use that for now. What I mean by Distributed Computing is leveraging another system or setup to perform all or some of a computing function. If this definition holds true, then you're essentially creating a partnership with a vendor to run some of your IT - whether that be IaaS, PaaS or SaaS, or more often, a mix. In your on-premises systems, you're the first and sometimes only line of support. That changes when you bring in a Cloud vendor. For Windows Azure, we have plans for support that you can pay for if you like. http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/support/plans/ You're not off the hook entirely, however. You still need to create a plan to support your users in their applications, especially for the parts you control. The last thing they want to hear is "That's vendor X's problem - you'll have to call them." I find that this is often the last thing the architects think about in a solution. • Cloud just for hosting big files?

  I need a solution to store my big files (50MB+ each). Currently I am using an european dedicated server (100MBits) with 8000GB/motnh at 60USD. I would like to use a cloud service that autmatically fetches my files from my server the first time users request it (like a classic cdn) (So I can have all files stored within 1 server) I was looking at Amazon CloudFront and, to get the same bandwidth 8'000 GB/month, I have to pay like 2000 USD vs my 60 USD of my dedicated server. Is there a cheaper alternative?

  I dont understand how to use a finite state machine with the entity controlled by the player. For example i have a mario(2d platform) i can jump,run,walk,take damage,swim,etc so my first thought was to use this actions as states. But what happen when you are running when you take damage? or jumping taking damage and shooting at the same time? I just want to add functionalities(actions) to the player in a clean way(not using ifs for all the actions in the entity update)

What kind of installer would you recommend (free and/or cheap is preferred) that is cross-platform (Mac, Windows 2000+, Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Suse, Redhat, or derivatives)) and lets me deploy Google Chrome Apps on workstations? It would need to let me deploy Google Chrome, or update Google Chrome to a particular version, as necessary, in order for my app to work.

  I just came across some articles on how to setup your own cloud using Cloudfoundry and Ubuntu, this got me thinking, choosing our infrastructure, if we want to use our own servers what's the advantage of cloud on virtual servers vs just using virtual servers, VPN? If we now develop for the cloud later if we need help we can quickly move on to a cloud provider, but other than that what's the advantage and disadvantage of private cloud in these areas? speed of development, testing, deployment server management security having an extra layer (cloud) will that have a hit on server performance, how big? any other advantage/disadvantage?

• How can I cap cloud-costs?

  I am looking into launching a cloud-based product for consumers where with a prepaid account they can start a server with a simple click and load up the software and access it remotely. The technical side of that I can manage, but I am worried about the costs escalating ridiculously high for both me and my customers Is there a way I can Limit how much each server can cost me before it will be deactivated See how much a server is currently costing me (so I can deduct it from their account) with it being extremely reliable as I don't want to have to have a giant bill in any possibility.

• Cloud availability of short-term "virgin" Windows instances?

  I have a situation where we on a regular basis need a freshly installed "virgin" Windows installation to do various work in isolation on, and building one from scratch every time in a vmware instance is getting tedious. Perhaps there are cloud offerings providing a service allowing to request one or more Windows instances and after a very short while they were available for logging in through Remote Desktop? After usage they were just recycled without having to pay for a full Windows license every time. Do this exist for a reasonable price? What is your personal experiences with this?

• Combine auto-syncing cloud and VCS

  This question brought me to another question: is there any VCS/tool for a VCS which automatically backups your source code between the last checkout and current changes? I had the problem of loosing uncommited source code changes just one week ago. I did not want to commit yet because the changes were incomplete. But then, an error when moving the data to an USB stick caused the data loss. That's the opposite what a cloud service (like Google Drive, SkyDrive, DropBox, ...) does: it tracks each change you made! Have you lost your data? That's no problem because you have the latest version online. So what would a combined solution look like? It would offer full functionality of a VCS including auto-syncing of any intermediate changes between two commits/checkouts to a temporary online location.

The thing I am trying to understand is this: What happened to cloud computing? Is the infrastructure at present insufficient to implement this? Is it still in its infancy? • Certificate error with Web Platform Installer

   A friend of mine was having an issue getting the Web Platform Installer to work on his Windows Server 2008 R2 box. He said there was some sort of cert error and asked me to try https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=158722 on my local machine to see if I got the cert error.  I tried it and I did get a cert error on Windows 7 64bit. I happened to notice that that url simply redirects to https://www.microsoft.com/web/webpi/2.0/WebProductList.xml . Out of curiosity I dropped to a command line and tried to run .\WebPlatformInstaller.exe /? to see if there were any command line options. It gave an error that said invalid URI. So we tried running it with the product list url like: "WebPlatformInstaller.exe https://www.microsoft.com/web/webpi/2.0/WebProductList.xml" . This seems to get around the expired cert that is on go.microsoft.com.  Here's a screen shot of the error:

• Starting out with 2D cross-platform game development [closed]

  I am wanting to challenge myself to build a simple game, that has a character and a randomly generated world. If I get anywhere with it I may perhaps I'll develop it into something more, but the key challenge I want to tackle is cross-platform. I'd also want to have a go at creating engine myself, doing lighting and other bits. Is it worth me using a system like Unity or do I go down a more custom route? The game I would like to make is a 2D game so whether that changes the tools I should use, it would be great to know as well. Supporting mobiles isn't something I am worried about at moment, just looking for Mac and Windows for time being. In future I'll consider other platforms if I get anywhere with the development. So if anyone has any recommendations for a language, engine or system to use would love to her your thoughts.Including pros and cons would be helpful and appreciated and if you can do comparisons that would be awesome as well!
