  • Updated 12.04 and now Xorg is dead from NVidia drivers

    I updated (August 16) Ubuntu 12.04 today and while I admit I didn't look what was being updated, it was large enough to have had an NVidia update in it. Problem is later on when I turned on my laptop again it won't boot into a GUI, just to the terminal (which I don't really know much of how to do anything). Now I have been able to log in and type "startx" to start up the GUI and now its complaining that my NVidia driver (if I remember correctly) is listed as being version 304.(number) and the version installed/found is version 295.(number). I don't know how this happened and now I'm stuck. I have no idea how it happened and don't know how to fix. Does anyone have any ideas? I have only access to wifi internet and no idea how to log on without the GUI so getting a new NVidia package isn't something I would know how to do even...   • Ubuntu 12.04 VM goes dead unexpectedly

    I'm not a super savvy super user, so I'm not sure what to look for. I have a vm running 12.04. It runs fine, and then just dies (no ping, no ssh). When I log into vmwaresphere, I see the vm still 'UP', but the console gives me a response-less black screen. This lead me to believe that Ubuntu was going into some sort of sleep/hibernate state. I double checked the power settings and found nothing out of the ordinary, so now I'm stuck on how to fix the problem. There are 5-7 (centos-5.8 & 6) machines running on the same server/vm setup with no problems at all. thanks.

  • Reviving a dead laptop battery

    Is there any way to revive a dead laptop battery? I have a three year old Dell Latitude laptop that I've been using pretty intensively. After a year or so, the battery dropped dead - if I plug the laptop out it goes into hibernation in a matter of seconds. Probably this was because I kept working on it plugged in all the time, but back then I didn't realize what effect it could have (this was my first laptop). Currently, I'm searching for a new laptop and I was thinking if there was something I could do to get the battery back working. I've found several links (sorry, I'm a new user so I can't post them) about freezing Li-ion batteries, but the opinions seem to mixed - some say that it worked for them, some not. If you've tried the freezing technique please let me know if it works. Or if you know another way to make a dead battery work again, please share here. I've already seen this thread, but I'm not very handy with soldering. If it's the only alternative I'll try it, but there's a big chance that I'll screw it up. Thanks!

    Recently my laptop battery will get extremely hot (definitely hotter than it should get) when I charge it. After that I usually end up removing it once it's fully charged to let it cool down, which takes a couple hours... Question is, is my battery dead? My last battery I had that died just ended up lasting 2 - 3 minutes on battery, no weird heat issues. And is there any way to possibly fix this? Probably not but I won't be able to get a replacement anytime soon. UPDATE: A few days ago when this happened and it cooled down, assuming it was fully charged, I ran my laptop on battery, and the battery life lasted about 10 minutes and then the laptop shutdown. I then plugged it in later and charged it back up, and for a while I had a orange light blinking on my laptop - which I assumed meant the battery was dead, especially since I got 10 minutes battery life. Then today, I turned my laptop on and was surprised to see that the battery was at 20% and charging (it's been plugged in since the incident above, so it should have been fully charged when I shut it off) I let it charge up, and as usual it got pretty hot around the time it was fully charged. So I turned my laptop off and pulled the battery out to let it cool down Now the thing is, just now I tried running it on battery, and it's been going for an hour now... so maybe its not dead? (also the orange light is no longer blinking...) Thanks in advance if anyone knows whats going on, and how to fix it, if its fixable =] EDIT: Some info if it helps... my laptop is about 2 years ago, and it's an Asus K50ID. I know laptop batteries usually don't last more than a year but I'm trying to keep this one going for as long as I can.

But after doing some profiling sessions, I could see that sometimes the number of "Garbage objects" is by far greater than the number of "Dead objects" of the same class (for example System.String). How should I interpret this phenomenon?

    Hello Is this some kind of exception dead lock i am facing? How to avoid it ? Have a look at below line where i have TIdContext objects of connected clients stored in an objlist and at times i need to process it. But if one user is disconnected while another thread is processing the list, then for that freed TIdContext-Data object I am getting Access voilation, Ok its fine i am using try/catch but problem is that at below line there is some kind of dead lock and process hangs , if i attach a debuger it show Access voilation Again and Again and Again, and cpu coonsumption goes up because of that exception dead lock. AnsiString UserID = ((Tmyobject*) ((TIdContext*) ObjList->Objects[i])->Data)->UserID; i know i can check before accessing the object, if object is not Null, It works.. But my question is what if once in a blue moon the Data object is freed at the point when NULL check is performed and on next line when again i am accessing the object i get same dead lock ??? So how to avoid/handle this dead lock exception ?   • HTML tabindex: Put some links last without complete enumeration

    I know I can use the HTML anchor attribute tabindex to set the tabindex of links, i.e., in what order they get focused when the user hits Tab (or Shift-Tab). But, I have a home page with tons of links, and to enumerate all those is a lot of work. The actual case is, I have four image links that by default gets index 1, 2, 3, and 4 (well, the behavior is equivalent, at least). But, I'd much rather have the first non-image link as number 1. Check it out here and you'll understand immediately. I tried to give the first non-image link (the link I desire to have tabindex 1) - I tried to give it tabindex 1 explicitly, hoping that it would cascade from there, but it didn't (i.e., the first image link got implicit tabindex 2). I also tried to give the image links ridiculously high tabindexes, but that didn't work: as the other links didn't have tabindexes at all, those highs were still "first". As a last resort (the solution currently employed) I gave the image links all tabindex -1. That makes for logical tabbing, but, it is suboptimal, as those image links are excluded from the tab loop - a user tabbing away will probably never realize that the images are clickable. I'd like them to be reachable with tabbing, but last, after all the ordinary links. If you wonder why I'm so determined to achieve this, it has to do with my own finger habits: I almost exclusively search for links, tab back, tab forth, etc., and very seldom using the mouse. Note: I'll accept a script to change the actual HTML for a complete enumeration, if you convince me there is no "set" way to solve this problem.

  • My MacBook Pro (2011) is dead

    I connected my Sony digital camera with the MacBook and the screen turned black. I wonder why because the Sony camera was not on at the time and technically could not be accessed. So I thought it might be temporary and I turned on my camera. Well, it did not work, but my MacBook Pro has been dead since then. It will not turn on - when I hold the power button for five seconds, nothing happens. When I connect the charger cable, the green light is very dim and blinks a little (with about 20% illumination). I wonder what the problem is. I have to call Apple Care, but just so that I know, what could be wrong? Is my MacBook permanently dead? It might be under warranty but I am not sure.

    So - following from my previous question: How do I stop DFSR replication preventing a Domain Controller from advertising Domain Services?, I lost the FSMO DC, and my only other DC was in an unrecoverable state. I've created a new domain to continue my testing, but now have an issue which I suspect is relevant to any domain suffering a "catastrophe". I have user accounts and client PCs "on the old domain". (Actually 1 client PC and 3 accounts) I can still sign into the client PC as any of those users on the "dead" domain, because that is cached. There are (thankfully) no encrypted files in the "old" domain. What I would now like to do is migrate the full content (files, preferences, etc) from the "dead" domain to the new "live" domain for any/all user accounts, for the "old" PC. Is there anything out there which can assist me in doing so?

  • Soft 404 error on redirected outbound links

    I have a redirect script on my site which sends visitors to an affiliate site. However in the last month I've noticed that Google webmaster tools is reporting my outbound links as a 404 error. Here is the breakdown on how its setup: My outbound links are coded like this: <a href="/f/c123" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Link Title</a> My redirect script will then perform a 302 redirect to the affiliate link Originally I had the affiliate links (CJ) directly in the HTML, however I noticed over time that this had some impact on my sites traffic. So I changed them to a redirect script and my traffic returned. This seemed to work with no issues for over 1 year but now I'm getting soft 404 errors in Google webmaster tools. I did try adding a rule in my robots.txt to block any links starting with /f/ but I'm not sure if this will help or Google will still report soft 404 errors. I am considering as possible options to change the a tag to a button tag and use an onclick event to load the link.
