• Is there a way to get a larger desktop than the screen?

  Is there any freeware out there that will allow me to run the desktop that is larger than the resolution of the screen? My situation: Win XP, Dell Mini 10, iirc- Intel GMA950 I need to use a netbook for one specific web site (with firefox) that doesn't render properly if the screen isn't at least 1024x768. It is a netbook, so the res is 1024x600. Is there anything out there that will allow me to use a 1024x768 desktop on this smaller screen WITHOUT shrinking the desktop to fit. I want to pan around. • How to prevent Gnome desktop from crashing?

  I have ubuntu 10.10 32bit running on my Asus EEEPC 1005PX. I am experiencing frequent desktop crashes. When I turn on my netbook at least once in 5 times the defualt ubuntu theme disapears and the classic gnome theme appears. Many times while doing some work, the desktop crashes and the CLI gets shown, and after a few seconds the login screen appers. I am not using any widgets or dock bars, I just have a single gnome panel with default menus. The crashes also happen when using the default bundled ubuntu apps. Is there any way to avoid these crashes?

• One of my user accounts logs in without desktop environment

  When I log in to my main user account on Ubuntu 11.10 ,the desktop environment (unity bar, clock, volume control, etc.) is not there. All I have is the desktop background with a menu bar across the top which appears to be for nautilus (options like File-New folder). My other accounts log in like normal. I have recently followed these instructions to give my main user account access to an OSX partition, but I think I have logged in successfully since then. I am able to get a terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+t, but when I typed unity the whole thing crashed. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I have a separate administrator account I can use if needed.

  Hi, I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 installed on my desktop box. I have got a new laptop and I will be using it from now on. But I will have to do the setup all over again (setting up applications/updates). Plus many of my preferences and tweaks I've had in my desktop will be lost and those too I will have to all over again. Is there an easy way where I can just take image or something and use it in my laptop?? Any help/pointers/links are much appreciated.

• How to change the default desktop environment?

  I wanted to try out different desktop environments so I installed XFCE, KDE, GNOME, etc on top of Unity in Ubuntu 12.04 After a while I decided that I didn't like those other DEs and would stick to Unity. So I changed my default DE to Unity by configuring gdm. > sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm Now I am able to choose my DE at login time and all of DEs are working properly. But the strange thing is that my boot up screen says 'lubuntu', my login screen is KDE, and my desktop is Unity. How and why is this happening? Why didn't my gdm configuration have any effect? Does login and boot up screen need to be configured separately from the DE? There are other similar questions here but they are not the same as this one. I do not want to remove the other enviroments I'm quite happy with having a list of DEs to select from. I want to know how to set proper defaults.

• Cannot start ubuntu-desktop

  I am mainly a Windows technician and am trying to install ubuntu server. Everything worked fine and I can log in using the shell but when I installed ubuntu-desktop it just refuses to start? I did try startx and I get the message "server already running" I tried "start gdm" (what is this supposed to do?) and it comes back with "Job is already running: gdm" I know that the server version is not really for ubuntu-desktop but all our other servers are like that and I want it, is there any help out there? Ps. the server is running on a VM install that my IT department made for me and I connect to the machine shell using "Tera Ter Web 3.1" Thank you Jack

• Lost desktop settings in KDE

  After next unsuccessful attempt to install ATI fglrx drivers, when I also changed GRUB config a bit (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="radeon.modeset=0 and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"). When I restored everything to default (uninstalled fglrx, restored default values in GRUB config and xorg.conf) KDE logged me into completely new desktop, with (I suppose) default configuration. Is there a way to restore my previous desktop settings? What could be the cause? SOLVED: Something was messed out with display settings. Search for 'Display Configuration' and there deselect one display. Or is there a better option?

  I have a client who wants a tool for him to be able to upload his products, enter orders, and keep track of customer details. There are quite a few highly customised requests, which is why he wants the tool custum made. He does not care much about the interface design - it just has to be usable and provide access to the databade. I've already designed the database. I have no experience of desktop applications and usually write my web apps in PHP with the Yii framework. But hosting this on a server seems like overkill. I also have .net experience from a few years ago. What would be the best options for writing this as a desktop application?

  Hello everybody. I've installed on my iPhone ad-hoc version, so it means distribution one. I've downloaded apns-shart library and tried to test push notifications on that. I have all necessary certificates. I've succeeded to push notifications using test notification project and with this everything is fine. My problem is: when I've tried to use test feedback project it fetched needed device tokens, but when I've tried to launch it second time, it return 0 bytes. What ca I do to fix the problem.

  Hi, I need to be able to schedule multiple Notifications at different times in the future. I tried doing this with an AlarmManager, but that isn't suitable, for the following reason. From AlarmManager.set(): "If there is already an alarm for this Intent scheduled (with the equality of two intents being defined by filterEquals(Intent)), then it will be removed and replaced by this one." Guess what, the sending intents are equal, apart from different Extra's (but those don't count for filterEquals). So how can I schedule multiple notifications, which will still be shown when my application is killed (the whole reason I tried AlarmManager)? Thanks.

• Looking for a good database structure to achieve Facebook/SO like notifications

  I want to be able to have notifications on my site, similar to the way SO does it. I have looked for a good table structure to do this, but I cant seem to figure it out. I was thinking something like this. Notifications id, notification_type_id, user_id, type_id Notification Types id, notification_text Where the notification type would relate to either a new post, a new comment, or whatever features I add later down the line... User Id would relate to whoever the notification is for. Type_id and notification type would go hand in hand, so if the notification_type was a new comment, the type_id would be the comment_id to go to. This seems good to me, but i want to be able to notify ALL users when something changes.. like on facebook when you comment on something, you get a notification that someone else has also commented on the same thing after you. I cant seem to figure this out... Help wanted Thanks

• Apple Push notifications server - Feedback always returns zero tuples

  Hi, I am developing an iPhone App that uses Apple Push Notifications. On the iPhone side everything is fine, on the server side I have a problem. Notifications are sent correctly however when I try to query the feedback service to obtain a list of devices from which the App has been uninstalled, I always get zero results. I know that I should obtain one result as the App has been uninstalled from one of my test devices. After 24 hours and more I still have no results from the feedback service.. Any ideas? Does anybody know how long it takes for the feedback service to recognize that my App has been uninstalled from my test device? Could it be due to the sandbox environment?

  tldr; Can you identify devices on your network as an iPhone OS device easily? Can you send push notifications to devices identified as using the iPhone OS on your network without a a target app? Is is possible to identify which devices on a network are using the iPhone OS? With this information, is it possible to send push notifications to these devices?   After I discontinued programming in C++ while entering into web authoring I was spoilt by PHP's high level constructs like hash tables or its dynamic, weak typing. I remembered the angst of C/C++ pointers and the maze of low-level Win32 API handles and message loops and that prevented me from utilizing environments like Code::Blocks for desktop applications. I am also not very fond of bulky, statically-typed C#/.NET environment. Any other ideas?

• APNS Sending Frequent Notifications to Device

  I'm trying to mimic a pager with my app by sending push notifications to the user until he or she responds. My thought was to send a push every few seconds and play the default sound on arrival. Not perfect, but better than nothing. It's working all right. However, I am finding that the sound starts to stutter/interrupt a bit after a few notifications have been sent -- as if it's trying to play the sound more than once. This happens even if I only send the push every 10 seconds. I just tested it at 20 second intervals and even then it starts to sound interrupted after about 10 times. Any idea how to resolve this so each message plays the sound crisply? p.s. Testing performed on an iPad.

• Change "Show Desktop" to "Minimize All"

  I'd like to use Alt-Tab a lot when I'm programming under Windows. It's the quickest method to switch between windows. However, there's one annoying thing about this, and that is when I switch over to "Desktop" using Alt-Tab, Windows uses the "Show Desktop" command instead of minimizing all Windows. I personally hate Show Desktop, since it creates a separate window on top of all the other windows which captures a live display of desktop, and this causes all the widgets I have on the desktop to be hidden under this live window, and I LOVE my widgets. An ideal behavior for when I switch tabs to Desktop using Alt-Tab would be the "Minimize All" behavior, which simply minimizes all windows, leaving me with my actual desktop, which sits behind everything. In order to achieve this, I have to move my fingers across the keyboard, and press Win+M. This decreases my efficiency by .5 seconds, which is a LOT of time. How can I tell windows to use "Minimize All" rather than "Show Desktop" when I use my good ol' Alt-Tab functionality to switch over to desktop and save .5 seconds in time?

If you are tired of looking at the default wallpaper, then join us today as we look at changing it with Oceanis Change Background Windows 7. Special Notes This information is quoted directly from the website and needs to be kept in mind when using Oceanis Change Background Windows 7: If the Oceanis Change Background Windows 7 program no longer works properly after installing some Windows Updates, then uninstall and reinstall the Oceanis Change Background Windows 7 program to have it run properly again. If you ever do an in-place upgrade to another higher level edition of Windows 7 in the future, then be sure to uninstall this Oceanis Change Background Windows 7 program first to avoid incompatibility issues with it in the new edition of Windows 7. It was designed to only work in Windows 7 Starter edition. Before There it is…the default wallpaper everyone with the Starter Edition gets stuck with. Some people may not mind it, but if you are one of the people who really wants something different then get ready to rejoice. We chose a time frame and saved our changes. Here are our three wallpapers as they switched through. This can be much more interesting than the default wallpaper. There was only one quirk that we encountered while using the Slideshow Setting. On occasion if we minimized a non-maximized window there would be a leftover partial image in place of the window. Our suggestion? Go with one wallpaper at a time and the settings shown below. These are the settings that we had terrific luck with…Only one picture selected, Picture Position = Stretch, & Change Picture Every = Every Day. Using these settings, the Starter Edition acted just like any of the other editions with regard to wallpaper management. Conclusion If you have grown tired of looking at the default wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter Edition then you will certainly appreciate what Oceanis Change Background Windows 7 can do to fix that problem.
