  • error/message: the disk drive for /home is not ready... when connecting an external hard drive

    i am running Ubuntu 10.04 all updated installed to date (3/28/2012) and when i connect another sata HD i get this message the disk drive for /home is not ready yet or not present continue to wait, or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery so i press S but i get this message could not update ICEauthority file /home/username/.ICEauthority And when a press close i get this there is a problem with the configuration server (/usr/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256) And when a press close i get message Nautilus could not create the following required folders :/home/username/desktop,/home/username/.Nautilus before running Nautilus, please create these folders or set permissons such that Nautilus can reach them And finally when a press Ok at the last message it disappears and i get a blank screen with a lot of colors on it and with nothing else so i shutdown (power button ) and disconnect the HD and boot without problems so how to fix this in simple commands because i am a total Linux noob notes -In the original error my username was in place of username i wrote (did not want to confuse anybody ) -I tried searching for this problem but a got a lot of different answers and most of them were really complicated to me and not working -I got a data HD connected and working without problems also the HD i installed Ubuntu on is Sata (maybe it helps) -Apologize for me bad English its not my mother language

  • Default mount options on auto-mounted NTFS partitions (how to add `noexec` and `fmask=0111`?)

    I use auto-mounting of external USB devices, and it works as expected, except that NTFS partitions are mounted with executability flag on. For example: /dev/sdb1 on /media/Elements type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions) All normal files are -rwxrwxrwx on this partition. I am not happy with the xs. I know I can have it mounted the way I want if I pass the fmask=0111 option. Now I use Lucid, and suppose it uses some new auto-mounting mechanism (gvfs-mount?), but I don't really know how the default mounting options can be changed now. Gconf settings in /system/storage/default_options/ntfs/mount_options have no effect. So, how do I make fmask=0111 the default automounting option for all NTFS partitions? (I'd be grateful also if someone explains how the current automounting mechanism works, how to configure it, and if the default mounting options are hard-coded, what I have to recompile to change them). I know that I can put a line in the /etc/fstab and/or mount manually, but this is not the solution I want, because 1) I don't want to edit /etc/fstab for each and every external drive I use, 2) fstab records appear in the Places pane of Nautilus, even if the drives are not present. The questions is how to change the defaults.

  • Make middle-click close window(s) on unity launcher

    I am looking for a way to achieve this on my 12.04 ubuntu system: Clicking with the middle mouse button on one of the unity launcher icons will close the related windows/programs. At present a middle-button-click causes (when possible) another instance of the same programme to start. There is nothing wrong with that, only I use this less often than I need a quick way to close some programs. The current way is a lengthy 2-click way. Right-click on the icon Select "quit" in the unity-setting in the ccsm (compiz config settings manager) some few things can be changed in the ubuntu unity plugin already. there are other reporst about settings being done in dconf and gconf. What chances are there to tweak the behavior as described above? In Firefox I am used to close tabs by "middle-clicking" on the tabs. In GLX/Cairo-dock I also associate "middle-click" with the close the program. When using ubuntu unity launcher I keep on mistakingly opening new windows, when indeed I wanna close the respective window(s). :(

    My purpose is to install ruby/gnome2 and make it work with ruby1.9 on Ubuntu9.10. I already have ruby/gnome2 working with ruby1.8, but I need to make it work with ruby1.9. I also have ruby1.9 working. When I run within ruby-gnome2-all-0.19.3: ruby1.9 extconf.rb it eventually gives me: Target libraries: glib, gdkpixbuf, pango, atk, gtk, gconf, libglade Ignored libraries: gnomeprintui, panel-applet, gtksourceview, gtksourceview2, bonoboui, bonobo, libart, goocanvas, rsvg, gnomeprint, gstreamer, vte, gnomevfs, poppler, gnomecanvas, gtkglext, gnome, gtkmozembed, gtkhtml2 so it seems some packages failed to be installed. When I look for the log for example for the gnomeprintui part, it exits after returning: cheking for libgnomeprinrui-2.2... no but apt-get says I have the newest version of it. Can anyone tell me how to resolve this problem?

    I'm trying to build GNU Classpath 0.98 and JamVM 1.5.2. Following the JamVM readme, I did 'configure; make; make install' on the jamVM, and it worked. I then added jamvm and Sun javac to the path. Then with GNU Classpath I did this: ./configure --enable-jni --disable-gtk-peer --disable-gconf-peer --disable-plugin I got this error: The javac failed (see config.log) On the config.log, I see that javac can't find VMStackWalker (which is jamvm-specific) I added the jamvm classes to the CLASSPATH, then I got this error: The Java VM jamvm failed (see config.log) On the config.log, I see that jamvm cannot find java.lang.Class WTF?

  • Gnome-Applets Package Causing Gnome to Segfault

    When I boot ubuntu I get a bunch of windows saying "The panel encountered a problem while loading: OAFIID:GNOME_ShowDesktopApplet", with a bunch of others(5) besides ShowDesktopApplet. I am able to launch a terminal, and I do have the taskbar at the top, although the bar at the bottom that holds the windows is blank, so when I minimize a window it disappears. Furthermore, when I try to launch most applications (firefox for example) it segfaults. I have googled the error but it seems to be common but general issue, and a lot of the solutions that worked for others didn't work for me. I tried deleting the gconf, gnome, and gnome2 folders in my home directory. I tried deleting a bunch of the gnome folders (although I might have done this wrong, I was confused as to which ones). I have also tried to use apt-get and dpkg to re-install ubuntu-desktop and gnome-applets. However, when I try apt-get install ubuntu-desktop I get errors regarding /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-applets_2.28.0-0ubunt2_amd64.deb I tried dpkg --configure -a and interestingly I get Package gnome-applets is not installed. When I try to use apt-get to install it, that same pesky problem pops up error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-applets_2.28.0-0ubunt2_amd64.deb (--unpack) subprocess new post-removal script returned error exist status 245 sub process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code(1) This file has been popping up with regards to a lot of the solutions suggested I see. Any ideas?

    Similar questions are asked frequently but no suggested answers solved my issue. I have some disk space usage that I can't find as well. It grows periodically and I'm running out of things to delete to feed the beast. It's all in the home directory of the only user I have.   • Gwibber doesnt launch post upgrade

    i updated my pc from ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 and one of the things i was looking forward too was the "me menu" and gwibber.   • Gnome-panel disappearance in Ubuntu 10.10

    Just today, after about a week of somewhat normal running (I'm a total beginner in Linux and the level of amazingly stupid problems I encountered made me go nuts), today my panel disappeared (the one with Applications/System menus, you'd call it taskbar in Windows). Also, Alt+F2 doesn't work and Ctrl+Alt+Backspace has no effect (I'd think it's supposed to do something). I tried the solution posted here: Panel doesn't show at startup at Ubuntu 10.04 No luck, didn't change absolutely anything. I also couldn't find the .gconf and .gconfd folders using search, so couldn't try that option. There were ones that had same names but without the dot though, but there were several so I didn't risk. What could possibly be the reason for this? All I did yesterday was try to install some updates (another extremely dumb problem - doesn't allow to install even the official updates - "insecure sources" or smth like that, tried fixing it with some tutorials on the net but in the end it worked only for half a day and went back to refusal mode :@) and very few tools from the Ubuntu Software Center, but nothing that would change system settings just by installing it.

  • Autounmounting USB keys with FAT filesystem on Linux (RHEL5)

    For security reasons, I have two workstations i front of me, and I can only transfer data between them through a USB key. As you can imagine, it can get quickly tiresome, but the most annoying is having to unmount the things before removing them. Not umounting them results in missing files most of the time, even if I remove them a while after having last written to them. Now, since they're only used for transferring smallish files, and each are basically written once and read once, I don't need the fancy pansy caching infrastructure that makes clean unmounting a necessary step. And since the data is always a copy of something I have at hand, I don't care if the filesystem croaks from time to time. But anyway the system doesn't need to force that on me, it could simply make sure everything is committed with a second, and works synchronously. Then when I remove the key, nothing is lost. Is there a way to do this? I would appreciate any other tips on handling this situation. Edit: it appears the situation has changed between RHEL5 and Fedora up to F11 on one hand, and F12 on the other. The latter use DeviceKit-disk, and I haven't quite figured out how to do this. The method provided below in gconf does not work anymore.

  • Scripting a permanent CTRL / CAPS swap in Gnome?

    I have a bash script that I use to configure a vanilla Ubuntu (10.10 Maverick Meerkat) installation to be exactly the way I want it. I make extensive use of gconftool-2 to configure the desktop, set up shortcut keys, etc. Now, I'm trying to swap the CTRL and CAPS keys. I have found two ways of doing this: In Gnome, go to System - Preferences - Keyboard - Layout - Options and make the change in there. This works well, but I don't know how to script this; the setting doesn't seem to be stored in the usual place as I can't find it with gconf-editor. Add the line setxkbmap -option "ctrl:swapcaps" to my .bashrc file. That works too, until I suspend the machine & then resume it. At that point the CTRL and CAPS behaviour return to normal, until I cause .bashrc to be run again by opening a new shell. This behaviour has been reported as a bug in RedHat. Could someone please suggest a way of switching those keys that is both permanent, and can be scripted? I'm sure I must be missing something obvious here ...

  • upgraded "Compiz' and "Unity", now no Unity 3D on screen

    Today when I logged in to my Ubuntu 12.04, the update manager told me of some upgrades. Compiz and Unity were in those upgrades. After I installed the upgrades, I can no longer get the Unity panel on the left side of screen or the systray at the top of screen. I now have to run Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity 2D. My laptop is a HP Pavilion dv9000 with Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 video. I tried to run "unity --reset" but it says there are serious issues with compiz. I have cut & pasted the read out from the terminal below. I must do a control C to get to the CI prompt, but then the OS is frozen. I have to reboot and run Unity 2D in able to do anything on my laptop. I hope I have explained this enough and provided some useful info. I am at a loss to understand what the problem is, or what exactly what is causing the problem. Is it Unity or Compiz? Can anyone help?

    I am running ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, and recently I am helping in testing out indicator-weather using the unstable buids. However there was a bug which caused my system to freeze suddenly (due to indicator-weather not ubuntu) and the only way to recover is to do a hard reset of the system. This happened a couple of times. And when i tried to open banshee after a couple of such resets I get the following fatal error which forces me to quit banshee.   • Sound issues after trying everything

    I cannot get my sound working properly, no matter what I do, there's always some problem. It's very annoying as it's the only thing preventing me from making Ubuntu my main OS. At the moment my sound always plays through both my speakers and my headphones regardless except the sound through the headphones is crackly. It is also a bit quiet even though everything is maxed. I've managed to improve the situation to a point where the sound out of my speakers is perfect but I have none at all from my headphones. I do have two connectors listed in the sound settings but regardless of which one is selected it always plays through the speakers. I think this might have something to do with the fact that my speakers are plugging into the front of my computer, typically the headphone jack, and my headphones are plugging into the back but when I try disconnecting the speakers from the front there is still no sound from the headphones. I fixed the speaker sound by going through the sound settings and making sure they were all set to 100% then rebooting. Things I have tried: Maxing everything and unmuting everything in alsamixer Uninstalling pulseaudio Making gstreamer use only alsa via gstreamer-properties. This worked with the sound test button including independent sound between headphones and speakers but when I reset the computer it no longer worked. So I tried setting it manually in gconf-editor which didn't work either. Reinstalling alsa and pulseaudio Setting the model in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to 6stack and 6stack-dig neither worked.     At times it seems like dozens, if not hundreds of root-owned HTTP connections spring up. This is not much of a problem on LAN or WLAN as each of them seems to transfer very little, but if I use GPRS link, my ping times go into minutes (seriously, 80000ms is not infrequent!) and all connections grind to a halt waiting till these end. This usually lasts some 15 minutes and ends about when I start troubleshooting it for real.
